Our breakfast was free, since we were staying at the Oak Tree hotel next door. There are two free breakfast options listed if you are a hotel guest. This place is hit and miss, it's literally a 50/50 shot in the dark if your going to get a delicious meal cooked by staff who don't touch your food to see if it's done or with a friendly and attentive server, or you could get cold uncooked chicken strips, half unthawed side or completely burned on an unsanitary open face stove and hair in your food, or and extremely impatient and irritated server, most of the time the cooks don't wear protective barriers, if you just watch them cook it you'll see what I'm talking about. Traveling through Wyoming. Decided to stop and try. Very busy, slow response once seated. Meal served in reasonable time. Wife's salad was pretty plain. No frills. I had a philly cheese sandwich. Would have been better if green peppers and onions weren't for omelette they make. Just dices and sprinkled onto meat. Line cook basically uses all ingredients to make things easier. Probably a good burger/ eggs/ pancakes place. Most reviews seem to backup this point. To get more stars expand the items that are on your menu to the way they should be made. Our waitress struggles to get our orders correct, but she had a great attitude and the "chef" came over to apologize and comp our hamburger that had been left off of our order. Classic diner look complete with lopsided booth seats. Don't expect too much in means of service. We stood for several minutes before a Customer told us that we seat ourselves. Standard diner fare; I ordered the 3 egg scramble that included 3 meats (bacon, sausage, and ham) and a side of hash browns extra crispy (which turned out to be crispy on one side). My meal also came with a pancake or toast, and even though the pancakes smelled awesome, the boyfriend and I both abstained for health reasons. The boyfriend ordered the "hearty" breakfast which turned out to be less than filling (he ended up finishing his and mine). I'm sure if he had eaten the pancake it would have been more hearty. In general, the food was decent and served right off the grill, which you can see from your seats. This brings me to my one caution. I have worked in the restaurant industry for 12 years and I realize that not all chefs wear gloves. But when they don't, they are usually washing them evey time they change tasks. The two cooks neither wore gloves nor washed their hands once while we were there. So... Just be aware. We still ate our food... Fingers crossed. read more

Another nighttime roadside dining experience. I was really happy I chose Penny's. I asked the desk clerk at my motel if there was a good place to eat nearby. He suggested this spot. I walked in wanting a salad, but their options were pretty limited and I was thinking of something with spinach and blue cheese. No luck here but the waitress I had was sweet and told me that she'd make me a side salad with whatever I ordered. I decided to hell with health when there weren't any salads I wanted on the menu. I ordered a burger that came with blue cheese sauce, cheese, bacon, and something else. The cook was nice too when I told him to cook it medium. It turned out more medium well, but, again, I'm much more about how I feel in a spot like this. I know I'm not dining at 5-star spot where cooks are taken to task for leaving a piece of meat on the grill for a bit too long. It was hearty, filling and good. A cute touch? She asked if I wanted my fries. I thought she was offering a salad in lieu of fries and not in addition to. ;) I passed on that and just had the salad. My orange juice was a little watered down, but since I didn't bring it up to them, I can't really dock them for it. There was a shift change while I was there, so I got stuck waiting at the register while a cashier counted the till. She was chatting with co-workers and customers while doing this and I figured it was just how things are done here. None of that crazy rushing they do in big cities. However, also not a reason to dock them because, Toto, we're not in Manhattan anymore. I had a filling dinner. I had so much that I had leftovers to take back with me. If you are a vegetarian and you happen to stop in Rawlins, Wyoming, then by all means, keep on driving till you get to Cheyenne, because you sure aren't going to find anything at Penny's Diner. On the plus side, there is a big mud lot across the street, perfect for parking your big rig. Penny's is a little neo-1950's diner (a la Johnny Rockets), straight out of a sock hop. I think it must have just opened in the last 6 months or so. Portions seemed large and satisfying for the carnivore crowd. But I wouldn't know. Went here the other day and they unfortunately had to close early due to I believe someone not showing up for there shift. The staff was very professional and friendly. The food tasted amazing. The lady's apologized several times for having to close early but it wasn't their fault and we were just about ready to go anyways. read more

We came here for food because everyone in Wyoming is closed passed 8 at night. So we were reluctant for a diner off the highway. We are so glad we came here. The place is an old 1950s set up. We ordered the burgers, double sized of course. The burger actually was really good. Very, very surprising. The fries is what didn't make this review a 5 star review instead of its 4. Fries you can tell were are frozen before cooking. The milkshake was good as well. But the hero was the burger for sure!! Really, really good burger. Penny's Diner may lack polish, but this place *nails* the essentials. Was gonna go to Micky Ds just down the road but Yelped and found this place. Was quickly served. Had the chicken fried steak (ranch breakfast) for 9.59 . The hash browns were as tasteless as the coffee. The steak was reasonably proportioned and the eggs were cooked to order. Felt that this place should have $$, not one. The advertisement we saw made it sound like these were all the same and the other one had a high rating. Guess that's what I get for not checking here first. Frozen hamburger patties like what you buy at Costco...frozen fries....the lettuce they served with the burger was brown. The cook looked like he really didn't want to be there. There were 6 employees. 3 standing around (2 at a computer and I think they were on with tech...so...I give them that). Our waiter was nice and polite. This place was filthy. It looked like the floors hadn't been swept or moped in days...the bathrooms were gross. The trash can was so dirty on the outside and bathroom needed cleaning. Hands down, the best Breakfast Burrito I have ever had, period. The eggs are cooked almost omelette style, so they are able to lovingly envelop the other delicious ingredients perfectly. I chose sausage and potatoes as those other ingredients, and I have to say I was blown away... both were still so amazingly crisp that I was literally in awe. No joke folks, if you loves you some Breakfast Burritos then you have to taste these incredible ones that are made only at Penny's! Side Note... we came across Penny's on our way to Nebraska from Washington, naturally we had to stop by on our way back... and if someone were to say right now "Let's go to Penny's.", I would so be down. read more
