To be fair, food was not bad. But service was just awful. Nobody even looked at us for ten minutes when we got there. Then they served us water and we waited like another 10 minutes until they even took our order. They did not advise us in advance that we are going to wait for our food for 45 minutes!!!! There was one guy by the grill who was preparing one meal at the time (we could see since we were sitting right there) and chatting with the waitress. However, bill came to our table the very second after we got the food. When we wanted to pay for it, we had to wait by the cash register for another while because nobody was paying attention to us. read more

This place was pretty terrible. At least at McDonald's or some other chain the have things standardized and you have low expectations. As you enter, you have no idea whether to sit around or wait around for someone to sit you down (a fact complicated by the numerous un-bussed tables with half-eaten plates sitting around). After you choose a seat you will be lucky to find a non-greasy table top where the surly waitress makes a half-attempt to wipe down the table (tiny place so all the oil and smoke from the flat top and fryer are literal a couple feet from you). One of the guys on the grill commented that it looked like the place had been hot boxed. Waitress had a pretty poor attitude while we tried to order some fairly plain 10+ dollar burgers (just a tip in case she reads this...swearing at your co-workers in a tiny space with kids around isn't the most kid friendly thing to do)The burger buns were hard on the edges as they just throw the buns on the hot top and let it sit there for who knows how long. The burger itself was a dense over-cooked piece of meat most comparable to a McDonald's patty without any of the grease. I added grilled onions which ended up being lukewarm and half grilled. The only thing decent on the burger was the bacon. Also had onion rings which weren't terrible. Forgot to mention the bathroom was filthy and wouldn't lock. Also as we tried to check out the lady up front couldn't work the credit card reader so we stood around for another 10 minutes waiting for someone to help her so we could pay. Believe it or not, this is a pretty decent diner. It looks just like many of the diners in the Northeast, and the food is pretty good--for a diner. I half expected Alice to come rolling out of the kitchen saying, "Kiss my grits, Mel!" (For all you twenty-something yelpers, that wooshing sound is that iconic line from an ancient television show whizzing right over your noggins.) To find a place like this is a traveler's delight--especially since the main "attraction" in this town seems to be the former Wyoming State Penitentiary! read more

It was the only thing open in this god awful town in the middle of nowhere where 95% of the shops are boarded up. Emily enjoyed her waffle and my breakfast burrito wasn't bad either. It's nice being able to see your food being cooked too, I guess I'm just nervous at little hole-in-the-wall diners. The attached hotel also looked nice and clean but we were just passing through. The cooks are awesome, the waitresses are awesome, the menu is sufficient, the hours are great (24hrs). The biggest problem with this place is related to the tight constraints of the menu placed upon the employees by the corporate office. For example, any place that serves non-fast food in Rawlins without green chili should just nail the door shut and put up a closed sign, but here in at Pennys they try the best that corporate will let them. Their green chili unfortunately is a soupy paste that contains slices of jalapeños which as you know is not chile verde. Oh well, nice try, still better than McDonalds/Burger King/Minimart Hot Dogs. read more

Cute little diner not too fat off the interstate. Service was mediocre. Lots of employees hanging around but not doing much of anything. Food was ok. But if you order tater tots, you might just get French fries anyways. If you are traveling westbound on I-80, you have to drive all through town at 30mph (strictly enforced) to get back on the road again. read more

Cool looking diner. For a diner this was a good stopping place. We were driving thru from SLC. Yelped as always, and were deciding between Penny's Diner or Denny's. We chose Penny's. Walked in sat down right away. Was greeted and drink order taken quickly. Even after we switched up our Order mid way, waitress was kind. The cook made Mickey Mouse pancakes for the kids so they were impressed. Huge plus that you could see the cook cooking right there and he wore gloves. That's BIG in my books. Food came out quick and was tasty. I'd choose this diner over Denny's. Bathroom was clean. All in all good experience. read more

Penny's was a great american breakfast for a weary traveler. Vintage 50's music and that stainless steel diner feel. As for the food nothing extraordinary, just good eggs and hash browns. A "must stop" place for breakfast to and from our Wyoming Deer Camp located in Baggs, Wyoming! The breakfast selection and quality has a homemade appeal. Try the biscuits and gravy or the chicken fried steak. Both are delicious. We have also never been disappointed by the service. Enjoy! read more

Have to say, for a small diner, the cook was super efficient and fast. My son say's "Penny's Diner, should be on Dives, Diners and Drive-Ins". Granted we arrived around 8:00 for dinner and they were out of the Giant Cinnamon rolls, which must mean they are yummy! I had the Blue plate special which was the cooks version of the Monte Cristo. The name says it- Diner! Fun, throw back atmosphere- C'mon, the outside is shiny silver. LOL! We love the one in Cheyenne, probably because of the fresh made cinnamon rolls! But, this one in Rawlins has the same nostalgic feel and the food is good. As the least populated state in this nation, dont expect a fast timetable but slow down, breathe and listen and you can enjoy it. The prices are spot-on for Rawlins area. You sit anywhere you want, somebody brings you drinks, you order and can watch them cook, chat with locals, play on you phone or whatever. It is open 24 hours and easy to park.
