I like Penny's. The atmosphere is open and warm. The food? Very good. The cost. Well... that's where things kind sour for me. Penny's is a bit pricey for what you get. You can get a good sandwich, but other than the pickle on the side, that's all you get. There are other delis in the area that will offer you better deals, with good food (maybe not quite as good), but also some sort of side. It's petty, I know, but it stands out in my mind. They do offer some sandwiches that you don't get anywhere else, though, and they taste very good. They also offer a daily special, but it seems to be on some sort of offset rotation of offerings. The specials (usually) don't show up on the standard menu, but the price is about the same as everything else. They also serve up a good variety of drinks. I enjoy the Italian sodas, some of the coffee drinks, and in particular, the mocha cappuccino shake. Penny's also provides internet access, via computers available in the back of the dining area, or via wireless (where the wireless key is posted on the wall near the computers, by the way). It's a decent place to go for business lunches, or if you're a work junky and you want to eat a good sammich and do some work at the same time. read more

Penny's offers a wide selection of sandwiches and soups, which are generally pretty good, as well as a full coffee & espresso bar. They also offer a variety of cookies and baked goods, which I find to be good. An overall good place to go for lunch or brunch in the Soo. Maybe it isn't as cheap a place as other places around town, but it is not expensive by most standards. I have been a little underwhelmed by portion sizes, but never left feeling hungry. I like the half sandwich and cup of soup deal with an M & M cookie to round out the meal. Also, if you're used to having wireless 24/7 (like I am at school), you'll be glad to hear they have it here for free. read more

Penny's Kitchen is a nice, quaint little café. It's a good place to stop for lunch, but perhaps a little pricy for a midday meal. The coffee prices are around Starbucks prices of I recall correctly. The interior is very nicely lit and the place really has class! It's actually a very ideal café for a lunch or coffee date between classes or during lunch break. I bought a Reuben and it was the best I've ever had (though I admit I only recently started eating them) and I've heard others say the same. In summery, Penny's kitchen is a great option, and worth least one visit to try it out! read more

Cute little bakery Bought a piece of the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake for my hubby, as he is an avid cheesecake lover... Okay, so amazing food, great smoothies, but seriously lacking in hours. So, sorry Penny, but I can't justify more than 3 stars. I tried to grab a cup of coffee at 7:30 am on a Saturday and no locally owned business were open to serve. I tried you Penny, but instead I had to get my coffee from McDonald's and their giant arches. So my whole think local idea was blown and my coffee was 2nd rate while I dreamed of your tasty offerings. We would eat here often if they were open later too, but we can't seem to get around for dinner before closing time. Alas... Great place to eat or drink. read more

This is a nice cute place with lots of seating, the staff is friendly and helpful, and there is some fun local art on the walls- plus a piano near the back that anyone can tinker on. The baked goods at this place loved by locals are outstanding. As a woman who makes my own pie crust, I am always thrilled to find homemade pie crust at any establishment. Penny knows how to make her dough so it is flaky and buttery. Bread wasn't very good the meat on my sandwich was dry and the cookie was awful. Nice place but not impressed with the food at all.

The portions are very small for the amount we paid for our sandwiches. The employees seemed clueless and it took 25-30 minutes to get our food and we were only #2 in line. The food did taste good but dont expect to be full. read more

We eat at Penny's several times a week and have always had great friendly service. The humongous raspberry blueberry muffins are fantastic, served warm with a little butter....yummy. I also love the homemade Chicken Pot Pies for $5. Also they are great to take frozen ones home to cook and eat....Last but not least, the carrot cake is "to die for good". HOMOPHOBIA and BAD FOOD. DO NOT GO HERE. You couldn't pay me enough to go back here. My experience at Penny's Kitchen is one that I wish I could forget. From the food to the service, every aspect of this restaurant is underwhelming, to say the least. I knew as soon as I walked in and saw the sad, outdated decor that I should leave, but I gave it a chance. Wrong choice. The sandwich I got was soaked in grease to the point that I could barely hold it. In spite of this, the taste was bland. The texture was disgusting. I could not finish it. On top of this, the woman at the counter was surly and rude. She seemed to hate everything about her life, and it all made sense when I learned she was the owner. She was incredibly short with me while taking my order as she eyed up my partner and I, after being nice to the straight white couple before us. She was CLEARLY being racist and homophobic, which is not a sound business practice. The floors were also filthy, as well as pretty much every table. The napkin dispensers were covered in a layer of scum. The silverware provided was covered in fingerprints. So all in all, I do NOT recommend this place. The bad food was not worth the discrimination and the poor atmosphere. read more
