Amazing market if you're looking for any Indian ingredients. The market has an amazing selection of spices, legumes, and east asian nostalgic specialties. The owners are amazing people. They've lived in the community for decades and are extremely sweet people. If you're really nice and you go in the summer, you can ask for fresh curry leaves. Which they will hand pick from their personal garden. But only if you're extra nice, wink. read more

This tiny corner store down the street from Trader Joe's hides a plethora of snacks, spices, Indian food, and a ton of pleasant conversation. I've recently gotten hooked on Indian snacks and Pennywise offers a huge selection at prices just as good as that bigger store. The owners are very sweet and I'm just as likely to stop by to say hi as I am to shop, but I always end up buying something. I'd rather they get my money than a big corporation. There are only about two and a half aisles here, but the space is organized with hundreds of products. The store is on a corner and attached to a single family home structure across from the public library. Most basic spices for cooking (coriander, fennel seeds, fenugreek, etc) can be found in medium plastic jars or bags about $3-4 each. Choose from dozens of spice mixes in boxes or pouches. This is a good deal because most of these items cannot even be found at Trader Joe's or Sprouts nearby, and are significantly cheaper here than buying online. However, you may need to reach high or climb to get the desired items, and very large individuals (99th percentile in width) may have trouble fitting into the aisles. With the owner's generous help, our selection was obtained in five minutes, which allowed us to adhere to the 15 minute parking constraint right outside. read more

Pennywise Market is a hidden gem on Santa Barbara's Eastside, across the street from the Eastside Library. In addition to the usual Santa Barbara fare (misc American snacks, Mexican candy, pan dulce and fresh bolillo bread etc), they carry an impressive variety of delicious packaged Indian entrees, hot mix, spices and condiments. I really love this place as it's just down the street to me and can't believe this treasure is hidden away but thanks to monkey and his sense of exploring we bumped into this place. It's was a nice little mom and pop store and has most of the Indian ready togo packages which I love and has quite a few other things. Come to look at it, living in this area, I'm happy there is a close by place that actually carries some asian foods and ingredients that I can actually walk to. The price is pretty good and cheaper than most place around town. So as I was ready to check out, I can't believe what caught my eyes!!!! Oh behind the counter was tons of hindi movies!!!!!! The woman behind the counter has a nice attitude and was kind enough to me to bring down all the hindi movies she got on the counter. I can't understand the language but I love bollywood and I love especially a place that sell updated movies and for a good deal. They also rent out these movies for $2 or you can buy em for $7. Hell yeah that is a good deal for me compared to what I've experience in the past everywhere else. These are also dvds and includes english subtitles and good qualities. If you want to go some place that is not way too crowded, nice service, with good reasonable price spices and quick indian food, along with awesome movies then I'd say you gotta check this place out. I only gave it four stars cos I wished it was a bigger asian superstore and not hidden away but if I can, I'd give it a 4.99999999 star ;-) read more

This is a corner store & Indian grocery!!! They literally have it all, packed into a small area. You really wouldnt guess from looking at the exterior. Its literally in the middle of a neighborhood. The owners are friendly, and eager to help if you have any questions. Love it... By the way they carry pressure cookers, and some cookware and utensils that you may need as well. This is the most unexpected Indian grocery store I've ever seen. First, I have lived in the area for almost a year, and had never heard of this place till someone filled me in. Second, the Indian component is only 25% of the rest of the convenience store. Third, with only a limited amount of space, Vasant, the owner, has managed to acquire a number of great Indian items including a whole fridge full of frozen foods (and paneer all the way from India), masalas, chutneys, sauces, savory snacks, papaddam, etc. read more

I enjoyed my visit to this tiny but mighty store. They carry quite a few items that you can only get in Indian grocery stores, including all the snacks that I love. Although they don't have the specific Ayurvedic medicine I was looking for, the lady directed me to another store in Ventura (Asian Pantry) and gave me their phone number. I ended up calling that store in Ventura and was glad to know they have the product! read more
