A Friday Night Home Run at Penryn Grill! This was our third visit to Penryn Grill, and someone suggested we come back on a Friday night for the clam chowder and fish & chips. Let me just say...it was absolutely worth the return trip! First, the clam chowder. My wife gave it a 10 out of 10, and that's saying something because she's a self-proclaimed clam chowder snob. She rarely finds a chowder that can compete with her favorite spots in Monterey. Well...hallelujah--we finally found one! The bread bowl deserves its own standing ovation. It tasted like fresh sourdough that had just come out of the oven--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely delicious. Normally you finish the chowder and leave most of the bread behind. Not this time. I ate every single bite of that bread bowl. It was simply scrumptious. The fish and chips were equally impressive. They served a huge plank of fish that was lightly battered and cooked perfectly. Too many restaurants hide a tiny piece of fish under a mountain of batter, leaving you feeling disappointed (and overly full). Not Penryn Grill. The fish was fresh, flaky, and outstanding. In fact, it was the first time in our 43 years of marriage that I've seen my wife finish every bite of her fish and chips! The chips were another pleasant surprise. Instead of the usual thick fries, they were thinly shaved, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely addictive. We'd never had them prepared that way before, and they were a home run. Of course, I couldn't leave without ordering what I consider Penryn Grill's signature dish--the shrimp tacos. They are hands down the best around. Perfectly seasoned, loaded with flavor, and honestly worthy of ordering every single visit. The atmosphere was terrific. We loved the live '80s music, the service was fantastic as always, and our waitress graciously endured my terrible jokes with a smile. That's five-star service in my book. As retirees, we're always on the hunt for a place that serves a great meal at a great value, and Penryn Grill checks every box. One tip: If you're planning to go on a Friday for the chowder and fish & chips, arrive between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. They regularly sell out--and after this meal, it's easy to understand why. Bun too small for the stacks of meat! I ordered the brisket sandwich and it was pretty darn tasty. The sandwich is overloaded with tender slices with a good smoky flavor. The beer selection and service are fine. When in the establishment, it is easy to forget it is attached to a gas station. Outdoor seating with nice fireplaces are available but this time, it was too hot for me. I will likely return to try out other menu items. read more

Solid brisket sandwich - meat super tender, ciabatta bun soft but not mushy. Light amount of sauce and cole slaw also on the sandwich finish it perfectly. Side note: I ordered fries, but they arrived with that trendy flour coating - I prefer my potatoes naked and fried. Server quickly subbed in cole slaw instead of the fries. I hit the place right in between the late lunch crowd and the early supper crowd, so had the patio pretty much to myself - it was just the brain break I needed. Server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without hovering. Totally delightful experience. Will visit again and go for the brisket plate. Penryn Grill is fairly new family owned grill located right next to the 76 station. I saw some posts and thought we should try it out. We went on our way up the I-80. I tried the Shrimp Tacos. I got 3 impressive tacos with large yummy shrimp. The best shrimp tacos in many many years. My husband got Smoked Brisket plate. Excellent. It is a thin (but not too thin) and tender. Has a light amount of BBQ sauce. The option side is Cole slaw but hubby substituted Fries and the fries were very good. They have a large tap selection of beers and option of wine. Today was our first visit to Penryn Grill and it lived up to the good reviews. Great food and service and very reasonable prices! A rarity in today's world, that's for sure. The place feels comfortable, lots of TVs for those who are interested, and super clean!! Our server, Bre 2, couldn't have been better and was not only efficient but informative and really friendly! Also a rarity in today's world. Keep up the good work Bre 2! We had the crispy chicken dinner and a quesadilla. Chicken was tasty, hot and extra crispy, legit real mashed potatoes and gravy, veggies and a delicious little honey bun too. Great meal for $14! Quesadilla was four big pieces with pico and sour cream. We subbed guac for sour cream, for a minimal charge. Our drinks were a lavender lemonade and a Michelob draft. Both cold and hit the spot on this unseasonably hot day. They make fresh soup every day and will go back to try the clam chowder on their Seafood Friday. Connected to the 76 gas station off Hwy 80 and Penryn sits a charming little restaurant with a lovely outdoor seating area! We were lucky enough to try this place during its opening week. The interior is super cute, and the staff is fantastic! We enjoyed our visit and would love to come back, but we did feel that some things could be improved. We got the deviled eggs, which were delicious, but there were only three on the plate as a starter--you'd think there would be a couple more. The chicken wings were served naked with a side of dipping sauce, but the waitress kindly offered to bring us a bowl to toss them ourselves. We also split a burger and a side of mac 'n cheese, both of which were yummy. We're looking forward to coming back and trying other options on the menu! read more

At first driving in to a 76 station, we were confused! They did an amazing job with the decor. This place is incredibly comfortable. I think we would describe it as contemporary-rustic in an upscale way. Ashley gave us great suggestions and was very knowledgeable about the food and drinks. She has a delightful personality. The food is absolutely incredible! We tried many of the appetizers. There are several things that are "Fridays only", so I think we will have to come back again very soon. This is truly a hidden gem! We visited on the Tuesday early evening (4:30ish) before Christmas with and had a wonderful experience. Great atmosphere in the main dining/bar area, decorated very nicely for the holidays, and there is cool patio with gas fires. Many screens if you are going to watch sports. Our large group (8) was seated in the corner and we essentially had the place to ourselves. The lady who served us was very helpful and patient with our children and old folks. The menu surprised me in a good way. Several healthy options and a good variety overall. The food itself was awesome. My dad claimed the onion rings were the best he ever had. We stopped in today to try out Penryn Grill based upon some social media posts we had seen. What a delightful treat! Food was delicious and plentiful and the service was amazing, a real rarity these days. Nice selection of beers on tap as well. We sat outside in the beautiful seating area.
