I had a truck reserved for a Friday evening, received a confirmation the day before that I could pick it up the next day.. in a town an hour away. I don't want to go into specifics because it has all been resolved by Andrea Lynn. I had called to get it all sorted out. I was put on hold three times, transferred twice and hung up on twice, presumably due to their inefficient phone system because even at that point I wasn't upset. I get that it was close to the weekend and lots of people are choosing to move at this time prior to the Summer rush. Yes I was upset that they reserved a truck so far away. Yes I was upset that an agent told me there was nothing I could do about it. Yes, I was offended when someone suggested should take a 10' instead of a 17'...... life happens. However, Andrea listened to my situation, saw how it was affecting my entire move/family/life and did a little research. She offered me the truck I needed for a day later, even gave me that free day. As a person who knows compromise is less time-consuming than complaining, I took her up on it! Moving one day later, but peace of mind makes it sweet! Thank you Andrea Lynn. I hope someone who knows you will read this and let your supervisor know that I appreciate you going above and beyond to help me and my family! We've rented from Hengehold twice for Burning Man, 2024 (15' box truck) and 2025 (24' box truck)…read more We've had bad experiences with other rental companies in the past (U-Haul, Enterprise, you name it) so we wanted to go with a local company that seemed to invest a lot in a great customer experience. The first time had no issues. The second time, the truck failed on us Friday night [more details are below], and we had to get a last-minute rental from Enterprise, while also locating a parking lot where we could leave the faulty truck. Hengehold was not reachable because they are not open on the weekends. Then, we had to spend time/energy unloading and reloading a new truck, and a friend had to stick around on Monday to eventually get that truck towed. Hengehold refunded us the full amount. Knowing the Burning Man general schedule (which is the same every year), and as a business that must draw in a ton of revenue from the event, I'm surprised that they are not open on that Saturday/Sunday to help with these issues and provide replacements. I'm leaving 2 stars here (instead of 1) because their customer service (when they're open) has been easy to talk to and work with (including the refund part), and because we still had a positive experience the first time. We will still consider renting with them in the future. ================== More details on the second time --- We drove the truck from Palo Alto to San Francisco on Friday, and spent the day loading in our supplies. We drove the truck out that night from SF headed towards Reno, and within 1 mile it started malfunctioning. The dash said there was an SCR malfunction (see picture) & the truck started beeping. We called a technician (not affiliated with Hengehold, since it was out of hours) who spent an hour with us running tests and said there was a clogged DEF catalytic converter. He hypothesized that possibly 1) just over time they wear down or 2) bad DEF in there that caused it to happen faster than normal timeline. He said there would be large overhaul of the system needed and that it was not fixable over night. "It's absolutely not getting to Reno". When we started driving again it wouldn't go more than 2 mph.

Appointments are readily available, and they take less than an hour to install it. Their installation does not include the electrical wiring to connect the rear lights or brake system on what you're towing. You'll need to find another group to do that work. Returning was pretty easy: just had someone come out, check the fuel level, and send the invoice to my email. $19.99 + $1/mile.
