It's hard to write a review on U-Haul, especially it's not for the intended purpose. Everyone knows U-Haul is a vehicle rental place that involves with moving to places. I was here in the Bay Area last October. I wanted to move my behind from here to there. However, finding a car to rent was scarce to non existent. Family recommended me to rent a U-Haul truck instead of taking an Uber. I tried to fill out the application online. I really did try. It was over 4 hours of searching my life history. I stopped in the middle. I need a break, you know. I tried to find a rental car again. OMG. I found a compact car for $250 a day but I had to go to Marin County. Never mind. I went back to fill up the application again. I was excited when I got the confirmation number. Then, I got an email wanted me to verify my account. It was like time bomb. I thought it was fine and dandy. So, I went to bed. Next morning, I checked email. It asked to verify account again. Oh no. This is too hokey. So, I cancelled my reservation. When I got to my hotel in Sunnyvale, I looked across El Camino Real and sighed. It's just right there. So close and so far. I had to pass. Maybe next time when I have to really use this U-Haul place. read more

Never would I have thought I would review a U-haul on Yelp, especially one that is 2 stars. That all changed when I walked in through that door to inquire on my reservation and a few moving tips, and Cass was more than happy to assist. Moving is a hugely stressful process for anyone, but Cass's warm and cheerful personality made me feel more at ease! He was able to offer tips on making the moving day easier - from more general day-of-move or packing advice (good music, teamwork, patience, etc) to specifics (forearm lifts, furniture pads, etc). I enjoyed and did not feel bad to ask the 1038392 questions I had - because he was more than happy to help! On top of that, he really knew his stuff. I was shocked when I asked about the price on a few items and he knew the codes off the back of his head. He definitely knows more than a thing or two about moving! Well, I guess we lucked out on our experience here. We needed a van for a local move, and stopped in a couple days before to see what our options were. There were only a couple other customers there, mostly shopping for equipment, so we had the opportunity to get recommendations from the man behind the desk. We went home and made a reservation online. Our move day was a Friday. We arrived in the morning and there was no line, but we had to wait for the customer ahead of us to finish his transaction. He was returning a few items and because he couldn't remember which credit card he used, it took forever the for the sole front desk person to finish his business. After that, however, it was smooth sailing. We were given the keys to a clean cargo van with only 6500 miles on it and then were off. The van had good handling and the side mirrors provided an excellent view of the traffic behind us as we cruised down the freeway. After finishing our move, we brought the van back and again found ourselves to be the only customer there. We left the keys and went on our way, and about 30 minutes later I received email confirmation of our final bill. Now, as mentioned above we were here on a Friday. I can imagine that if you're here on the weekend it will be considerably more busy. For us, doing a little bit of advance research on what equipment we needed, and then doing the reservation process online saved us a lot of time in the office. read more

My second time. Different staff but better experience. 1.) Prep before you drive, look at YouTube vids on how to drive it first. 2.) Also take a note if the gas tank is running low before you take it out the drive way.. 3.) No customer parking onsite. Prep for street parking , but very limited spots. You can try driving inside straight to near the office door. 4.) Come 15min early, i picked up at 8.16am ish depending on the line you're calculated time period for rental use may be effected. Always factor in 30min & 5 mile extra buffer on your online reservation. 5.) check in early. read more

Initially, online, I had signed up to pick up the truck at a different location and drop off here, but then I received a text message from this location offering a big discounted rate if I picked up and dropped off at the same place. Unfortunately, I forgot who was the one helping me when I went to pick up the truck, but he was a tall-ish guy with longer hair and facial hair, if I remember correctly. Sorry! He was very helpful, friendly, and gave good advice on how to drive the U-Haul, since it was my first time. Only confusing bit was the note I made at the top, since the picture on the mobile truck return website did not match the actual dropbox appearance at this location. Wow, had a great experience with this U-Haul. I have never rented a U-Haul before and honestly had low expectations for their customer service. I made a reservation online but was having trouble picking it up -- so ended up having to go inside and get help. The online process was not very smooth and we got a bit frustrated.. although no fault of anyone at this location. I did not catch the cashiers name who helped us, but he was wonderful! We were there on a Saturday evening around 5pm. We had originally rented the van for 2 hours but after not being able to get the truck immediately at 5pm we were worried about getting it back before their closing time at 7pm. The cashier let us know it was totally fine - we could do an after hours drop off. We were able to do this quite easily! The only thing that's a bit of a pain is that you have to park your car somewhere that is NOT on their property. It makes sense because the lot is for all U-Hauls, but is inconvenient as most people likely arrive in a car. Anyway, would definitely rent a U-Haul here again if we needed! read more

Made a reservation for a 10 foot truck here weeks ago to move today. Got to the location and they told me their entire system was down and that I couldn't get my rental. The guy (long hair) working at the counter was a huge douche - didn't apologize, told me I couldn't get any discount on the truck for the inconvenience, and told me he had no idea when I could get my rental. I get you have a shitty job, but try to be better with customer service. I got a call 5-6 hours later saying their system was back up. I was forced to rent a truck from Penske down the street for $100 more since I had to be out. I will never go back to U-Haul, and you should avoid this location at all costs. Not sure why this location has only two stars but I had a pretty good experience renting a 10 foot truck for a day to move out of an apartment. Granted, I didn't have to deal with long wait times because I rented on a Sunday morning. I had a great experience with Cass Rickard. SUPER friendly guy. This is the first time I've rented and driven a big U-Haul truck, and Cass got us out the door as quickly as he could. U-Haul's computer systems are pretty outdated though. Because this was my first time ever driving a U-Haul truck, Cass even followed me to the truck 5 mins after checkout to help me figure out the controls to the truck and how the back latch works. The trucks themselves are pretty old school. Hand-crank windows, old seats, but still in okay condition nonetheless. Drop-off was simple too. Just pull into the driveway and drop the key off through the slot in the door if after business hours. read more

Since moving to the Bay Area five years ago, I've moved on average once a year. But now that I have a permanent roommate (aka wife), I've stopped having to move. My reward? I get to help other people move! This U-Haul was where my friend decided to reserve a truck (for me to drive, since I'm apparently the moving pro). The cost for a 14' truck was $30 plus $1.29/mile. Not cheap, but reasonable considering that it was Saturday and summertime, two factors that usually make prices go up. Picking up our truck was a breeze. The lady who helped us was friendly and answered all of my annoying questions: Me: "Is there a fee for adding additional drivers?" Her: "No, anybody with a valid driver's license can drive the truck." Me: "What if we need to keep the truck past the return time?" Her: "No problem, just call and we'll adjust your reservation." Me: "Do you have an overnight drop box?" Her: "Yes, you can just drop the key in the slot through the door over there." Me: "After we're done moving, can we have a rave party in the back of the truck?" Her: "Umm..." Me: "Sweet!" No problems with the truck, either. It was clean and ran like a champ. The only gripe I have is that when I turned the key when the parking brake was set, a very loud buzzer started going off. Scared the freak out of me. All COVID restrictions were followed. We book the vehicle online the night before, checked out an hour after the scheduled time the next day. We received a phone call from U-Haul half an hour into the scheduled time confirming if we wanted to keep the reservation or cancel it. The best part is that we returned the vehicle a couple of minutes past 5 PM (their closing time). But, Luis Martinez still accepted our vehicle and processed the receipt. We were worried that since we were late by a few minutes, we would need to do manual return and drop the keys through the slot. But, thanks to Luis' helpfulness we didn't need to do it. read more

I have rented multiple trailers from this location with bad experiences: 1. the person hooking the trailer up to my hitch did not extend the harness which was not long enough to reach my trunk and instead clamped my own car's electrical harness in the rear door hatch causing the harness to be damaged and need replacement. I did not know any better and relied on them to hook it up properly. On return, I was told this location does not install hitches so no harness replacement, out of luck. Then a few rentals later I asked again and the "manager" claimed they could do it but would not schedule. 2. That first trailer had a brake problem and had grinding noises which made me feel so unsafe that I pulled over multiple times; and called their assistance line to try to get someone to pick it up and take it off my hands but since we were 200 miles from home so they would not take it without charging me an almost $1000 "one way" fee for an "in town" trailer. Thus I drove it 200 miles home, early, and empty - I abandoned my plans to bring a load home from a rental home we rarely visit. Due to the harness damage problem above and brakes problem the manager specifically told me on dropoff he'd refund me the rental charges and he processed the refund. There was a second charge I had incurred to extend the rental but I did not use the extended days so the second charge also was due to be refunded. 3. Never saw a refund of the second charge for the unused trailer days I had reserved but not used because I returned the defective trailer early. Manager reneged on promise to refund rental charges because after processing the above refund he refused to refund the "rest" that had been charged for the additional rental days I did NOT use the trailer and he then claimed that was payment for the trailer for the days I had had it that he had already refunded. He then said he NEVER promised me the refund he specifically did. 4. Calling Uhaul customer service was useless in terms of getting refund of unused trailer time charge. 5. On dropoffs to this location, I was TWICE charged an extra day for trailer rental despite bringing back either early or during 1 hour grace period. On returning one of the trailers I alerted the manager that I had been overcharged for previous trailer rental - he agreed, took a photo of my contract # on my phone, and I understood he was on his way to refund that extra charge. INSTEAD he did not only NOT do the refund, he charged me an extra day for the very rental I was dropping off that instant! Thus he overcharged me twice! The contracts show the pickup and return time so he deliberately did this right after telling me it was an overcharge to do it that way, and falsely promising to issue a refund. BEWARE THIS LOCATION AND NIGHTLY CHARGES!!!!! 6. On picking up multiple trailers, they were either dirty inside and/or failed to include the dolly I had rented. Make sure you look inside before driving away. No doubt they will falsely claim they gave you equipment and you took it out, so look before leaving. The last trailer I picked up both lacked the dolly and had a bunch of used moving blankets in the back. The uhaul person refused to go in the trailer and get the blankets and told me to do it myself. He was tall and said he had a bad back and would not bend down. He also told me take the blankets free and they wouldn't charge me, which I did not trust and I did not want someone's used blankets anyway. When I went off to ask the manager to find an employee that would clean and stock the trailer as ordered, this fellow did in fact go in and take the blankets and then disappeared, the manager then could not find him anywhere on site. Manager later told me he "talked to" that employee about how he had behaved. read more

Came to get a hitch installed. After three hours, was told the hitch was installed but I needed to come back the next day for the wiring because he didn't have the right wiring. Came in the next day and was told they had the wiring. Two hours later I am Told they don't have the right wiring. If they had a waiting room this wouldn't have been as annoying. Horrible experience. These guys showed a huge lack of training and customer-oriented attitude. Be aware they don't have parking for customers who need a van/truck for a couple of hours and they expect you to read a tiny sign that is blocked by their vans (see picture). I know this is not a fancy place but a little bit of common sense and training on employees will go a long way helping customers. I love U-Haul but this office is really bad. Came in over the weekend. Greeted upon on arrival by Louis, that man had such a great disposition about him. (Think he was the mechanic) Went to the counter, guy comes in, obviously busy, and gives me his FULL DAMN attention. "The SYSTEM IS DOWN and he completely walks me through the process , calls a mainline and gets it all done. Mind you, I didn't call ahead or make an online appointment. He helps set up the the vehicle, sends me on my way, and BAM a cleaned truck, ready to go. Incredible experience all around. You guys were busy, the company provided electronic system was DOWN, and you still did everything with grace?!! Excellent experience. 100% Corporate - They deserve a bonus. Immediately. App and web site are broken for returns, it's imposible to get the advertised rental fee. I wish they'd warned me that the time my van was due was after hours - I could've returned it earlier. Their app and web site don't work for returning, and I sat on hold for a while before being asked to go through an elaborate email checkout procedure or be charged $20 or so for them to do it for me the next morning. They didn't respond to my email at all, but at least they didn't charge me the extra fee. I'm fairly certain it's either impossible to get a rental for only $19.95 as they advertise, or if it is possible, it's through some totally non-feasible loophole. My rental van cost me about $75 plus about $30 in gas. Also, no customer parking on site is a hassle. read more

I was faintly surprised with our experience at U-Haul. Since no one I know owns a truck, I've used quite a few U-Haul's with varying results. This one was one of my better experiences with them. The van was clean, ready promptly upon check in and when we needed more time we called in and extended our rental by 2 hours. We had no issues with any aspect of the van. Something after renting a U-Haul which had been in an accident and had not been removed from the rotation, I no longer take for granted. If I could give them zero I would! I recently had a terrible experience with U-Haul but mainly with the staff of U-Haul Sunnyvale. They overcharged me unfairly for not returning the truck at the same location though on my reservation I clearly specified I wanted to return it at a different location and I had proof for it too. After numerous calls to their different departments, and passing me from one to another, they finally didn't reimburse me the extra money. Both the local staff in the Sunnyvale store and the ones who I talked to on the phone, were rude and knew nothing about the basics of a good customer service!! As if moving wasn't stressful enough, we get a call the day before we are to pick up the 20ft truck we reserved 2 weeks ago saying it was dropped off at a different location (Belmont). The options given to us were to take a 15ft but would have to go to Mt View (Not even at the Sunnyvale store which is closer to us and where we originally made the reservation) to pick it up, or drive to Belmont and pick up the 20ft we requested. To compensate for the total inconvenience this causes us, they offer $50 off. Highly disappointed and frustrated that we may have to make extra trips for this move instead of the peace of mind knowing we could have definitely fit all of our belongings in 1 truck. read more

I want to first thank the Assistant Moving Center Manager, Cass Rickard. He did a great job handling a bad situation. However, his manager tried to defend this terrible work that was done on my Toyota 4Runner. I paid them to wire in a cable with a connector to attach to trailers when towing. They took the easy path by attaching the wires directly to the taillights and fed them fully exposed over the tailgate. Each time I close the tailgate it slowly damages the exposed wires. The underside of the car is equally as bad. Cass was very nice, but his manager tried to defend this work as if there was no other way to do it. I have since then had professions install it properly. Cass should be promoted and his manager removed from that position. I can't believe he tried to defend that work that he did not want to fully refund me. Cass backed me up, against his boss's wishes, and did what was right. Thank you, Cass. You deserve to work for someone more supportive of your great customer support skills! read more

I can't seem to go less than one star. I rented a truck for my move. Flawless. I guess they get the one star for that. Though they have a gas gauge that will take $20 of gas and still not move it. Everyone was great for the first rental, the second was a nightmare. I go to rent one for my friend. They have NO PARKING for the car you drive there in, and only interrogation methods will get them to tell you where you can park. So, I rented a truck for my friend (no license yet, from NYC). I pay the deposit (only) and drive the thing. Now I'm not going to say I never got the deposit back, but in this month-long-project that is currently my life, they have re-charged my friend for the rental, refunded ME for the actual rental (which is sadly less than the deposit) and I'm still awaiting the full amount. I hope people start reading yelp before they make any purchase or go to any of their local businesses... It's not just for food people! read more

My initial draft: Y u gotta be so rude My story is similar: I made my reservation online for last Sunday, the 18th. I was to be picking up from this location and dropping off in another city. I crunched a LOT of numbers and found this to be cheapest. I got an email confirmation that they would call me if there were issues, but otherwise I was set to go. I opted for self-service, and nothing provided any instructions, until I spoke to Cass a little later (also, the day before my pick up). Day before comes, and someone leaves me a voicemail (no name) saying they are confirming my reservation at 1:30pm going to (other city). Except that's not what it should be. I IMMEDIATELY call back, and speak to probably the rudest woman in customer service. I explained I had booked a truck at 8:30 AM so a 1:30 PM is unacceptable. I was probably ticked because they didn't say "oh we're making any changes" they just said this is what it is now, which was wrong. She did NOTHING to assure me or assist me, honestly. I think she was just in no mood to be helpful. I asked her whether they would have a truck for same-city drop off at 8:30 and she told me yes, but that this is the more expensive option. Well...I need 8:30 and you're telling me you can't do that, so at least this is kind of a solution. Second solution: I asked if she would be able to look at other U-Haul's in the area for a pick up at 8:30am and drop off in the alternate city, and she told me she doesn't have the ability to do that. BUT that I can call X number and they can look that information up. I needed 8:30am, so I changed the reservation to same-city. She was super sassy about it - " are you *sure* you want to change the reservation before you speak to them?" Yes, I don't want someone else to book it... Also, I'm disconnecting this call to call that number. I call that number, which is HQ. She is also super resistant. "Ma'am, I cant confirm that because I would have to speak to that location directly." I'm LITERALLY telling you what they just told me. Can you just take my word for it, and then help me if we pretend all these situational factors are truth?? Then, she is 100% unable to look at other U-Haul's in the area for their schedule. They have a traffic controller that does that instead. I ask her WHY then, did the site tell me to call you when you are only able to provide me the other number and "unable to confirm" anything else??? She tries to tell me the site did the right thing, but I have to go speak to WHOEVER CAN HELP ME. I call the traffic controller & try to explain as well. She cuts me off, and tells me she has no idea why they told me a 1:30pm is their first available, because she can see that they already have the truck, and they just need to prepare it for me to pick up at 8:30am for self service. Are you sure, I ask, because I just talked to them. That's what it says, she tells me. We move it back to the original reservation. Obviously, that cant be the end. In an hour, I get another call from Cass, who honestly, was helpful. I'm not sure if he was the original caller/vm, but if so, can you work on being more informative please and thanks. We only have a pick up at 2pm he tells me. He informs me they have a situation of another customer that was unable to return the truck today, so I guess that affects all their other pick ups for the day, and they need the truck back in the same site. Okay, so a pick up and drop off in the same city at 8:30 am will work? Yes ma'am he tells me, and it is a $30 cheaper option. (I've already crunched the numbers from address to address, so no it isn't. ALSO if we remember Queen Sassy Pants, she tried to tell me it was more expensive. Point made.) I tell him to call traffic control and ask whether there's another site for an 8:30 pick up. He tells me he's just trying to help, which I can hear in his voice, but that if it's an option, I'd rather go to another site. He calls back in a few minutes and tells me there's a Mountain View site that has what I need. It's too far, so I opt for same-city pick up, self service at 8:30. NOW Cass explains how self services works, which I appreciated. We're done!..? Nope. I go to pick up my truck that morning at 8am. This site opens at 9, so if anything goes wrong...Murphys' Law. THEY PARKED ANOTHER VEHICLE in front AND BEHIND my truck. The self service is self explanatory but not for if there's an issue. I had to wait for someone to arrive at like 8:50, and let them know. There's a drop off for keys, and I figured it'd be one of those from the night before. Still wrong! He gets the key off the wall and moves this other truck. WHATTT?! My mind is blown at how disorganized this place is. What if I had movers coming? That would have thrown off the whole schedule. (Plus, an 8 am to MID AFTERNOON pick up? There were at least 4 other trucks with my specs.) Drop off was pretty easy (scarily) and I got my receipt emailed. But wow I would avoid this site like the PLAGUE. read more
