Over the years I've came here for speciality and common spices and they never disappoint. They also have a clean and professional space with positive and helpful employees. I've tried many things here and have never found anything that is less than great quality. I really like their paprikas, Italian herbs, and types of dried peppers they have. Will always come here when I'm in the area.

I love Penzey's! I'm a frequent shopper here. Well, technically I'm a frequent online shopper. I just pick up my purchases at the downtown OP store. Penzey's motto is love and that cooking with love can heal the world. The company is quite politically-minded and very offended by the hate and antagonism coming from the right side of the political divide. Myself, a reformed right-sider, now firmly entrenched on the left, I personally love it. Every time something happens in the world that makes my heart hurt - Gun violence, anti-LGBTQ hatred, taking away rights from women - you can bet the owner of Penzey's will have something to say about it! You'll only know that if you sign up for their newsletter, but you can be sure there will be a killer discount attached. They release special seasoning blends like "Justice" and "Revolution" when something terrible happens in the world, and are constantly giving away product and having $1 and $2 deals. Since I agree with their political views, I always try to support them and make a purchase when they email these deals. The spices are always fresh and range from about $4-7 for a 1/4 cup. Honestly I get so many deals that my average spend is probably half that. I think I've bought every slice they sell over the past two years and am not disappointed. Both the website and store are easy to navigate and buying online and picking up in store is a breeze. This is a great place for gifts. They offer many gift box options - often packaged with tea towels or mugs. There are plenty of salt-free options and even garlic- and onion-free if you're sensitive to alliums. Conveniently located in downtown OP, foodies can enjoy a shopping trip here. There's an olive oil & vinegar shop a couple doors down, the culinary center across the street with kitchen gadgets & pre-made foodstuffs, ten thousands villages with coffee & chocolates from around the world, and you can tip it all off with a slice of pie at the Upper Crust next door. Street parking is pretty plentiful unless it's a farmers market day. Just go by it some spices - you won't regret it! Or shop online and look for the orange "specials" button to save some dough.

Kids' drawing area. Keep the littles busy while you shop!

I saw a woman pour a little bit of vinegar into a little paper cup and sip it straight, so in true monkey-see-monkey-do fashion I did the same. My first taste was the White Peach Balsamic. Forget everything you know about balsamic vinegar, stuff this good is on a different plane of existence altogether. Wow! So syrupy and brightly flavored I now understood the glaring lack of bread cubes. Who needs them? The White Peach was like jam. I was instantly thinking of pouring it over ice cream, or ... ? It turned my world upside down. My budget permitted a purchase of just one bottle this trip, but you can rest assured I will be coming back to add to my collection. If you're curious, I chose the Lime Jalepeno Balsamic as my first bottle. All I add is a little oil, salt & pepper and I have a salad dressing that knocks my socks off!

My culinary game has stepped up several notches over the past few years and places like the Tasteful Olive absolutely augment my cupboard. If I can finish a pasta with a flavored olive oil, such as garlic, lemon, or maybe blood orange, then count me in. It certainly ain't cheap, but great food is made from great ingredients, and those great ingredients are going to cost money. This most recent visit had me adding in a bottle of strawberry balsamic and I cannot wait to knock a salad out of the park with this stuff. I also added in a house-made lemon/basil/garlic olive oil blend that made a recent risotto of mine devastatingly fantastic. I walked in curious; I walked out with three bottles and tons of ideas. Super-friendly service and they're always helpful if you have questions about pairings or flavor profiles. I love the layout as well as the local goods that you can get, such as honeys, jams, or pasta. I took a pasta making class here a few years back and enjoyed it, but my wife really wanted to go back and dine there. She took advantage of the option to make a same day reservation for their patio. We ordered the following: focaccia, spicy vodka radiatori, chitarra alla gricia, and tiramisu. In descending order of what I enjoyed most - the tiramisu was my favorite part of the meal. It ended our lunch on a high note. This is my favorite style of tiramisu, and almost no one in KC does it like this. The spicy vodka radiatori tasted great and was well balanced with creamy cheese and spice. While it was enjoyable, I was realizing that an outdoor pasta lunch in the middle of summer isn't ideal. The whipped ricotta and honey spread served with the focaccia was the perfect spreadable pairing to the fresh, warm bread. Chitarra alla gricia is probably the closest to a Roman carbonara that I've had in KC. The pasta was thick and flavorful, and went well with the sauce. It was a weekday lunch so I paired the meal with a nonalcoholic Italian pilsner (since I'm big on beer; @halfwaywestbeer on IG). I will say I didn't feel entirely safe sitting on their patio. The planters between my seat and the road of speedy cars didn't assure me any safety. I enjoyed everything, but I don't plan to return to dine there. I would return for a pasta making class or to pickup some tiramisu to go. Don't stress if you're having a hard time getting a reservation. There's plenty of good pasta restaurants in KC of equal quality.
