They have so many different variations of the spices we all know well including pink and green peppercorn, sandwich sprinkle, garlic & herb cheese sprinkle, florida citrus pepper, lemon rosemary garlic salt, etc. The workers are all very knowledgeable and ready to help you find something new or an old favorite. I am obsessed with pepper, so I got their Florida seasoned pepper to try and it is delicious!! Will be great on virtually anything-- chicken, fish, or veggies. Love this store. Such a wide selection of spices herbs, seasonings, and extra what nots related to cooking. Service is excellent and friendly. I could do mail order but there is such a joy to walk in and experience the various fragrances and scents. I appreciated the free sample of their newest seasoning blend. And I was able to finally get my Kind and Embrace Hope pins. Since Penzeys is right off the open space between blocks in old downtown OP, it was a delight to see a little girl and her mom blowing bubbles. What Joy! I have made a habit of making periodic visits for some old favorites (frozen pizza seasoning, hello?) and I walk out with something new to try EVERY time. If you like lighter fare, then season your chicken, fish, & veggies with the Foxpoint blend (garlic & herbs) or put a splash of Sunny Paris in your omelets. From spicy to all the herb families, Penzey's either has it standalone or mixed in some master blend and they never miss. You can even try 'sample' sized packets of their latest creations, all of which have whetted my appetite for more. Parking in Downtown OP can be tricky, but you're likely to stop into other spots, Penzey's always welcomes you in, with knowledgeable and friendly staff, and lots of space to move about. Over the years I've came here for speciality and common spices and they never disappoint. They also have a clean and professional space with positive and helpful employees. I've tried many things here and have never found anything that is less than great quality. I really like their paprikas, Italian herbs, and types of dried peppers they have. Happened into this spice shop during an OP fall fest and found some really good gems that have brought me back! It's the only place I've found around KC that has grey French salt. They also have an affordable herbs de Provence. They also have a Parisian herb blend that's a bit sweeter than the herbs de Provence. They have a lot of great selections and their own blends as well. Everyone that's helped me has been very kind. Their values are also on par with mine so that's nice. read more

I love Penzey's! I'm a frequent shopper here. Well, technically I'm a frequent online shopper. I just pick up my purchases at the downtown OP store. Penzey's motto is love and that cooking with love can heal the world. The company is quite politically-minded and very offended by the hate and antagonism coming from the right side of the political divide. Myself, a reformed right-sider, now firmly entrenched on the left, I personally love it. Every time something happens in the world that makes my heart hurt - Gun violence, anti-LGBTQ hatred, taking away rights from women - you can bet the owner of Penzey's will have something to say about it! You'll only know that if you sign up for their newsletter, but you can be sure there will be a killer discount attached. They release special seasoning blends like "Justice" and "Revolution" when something terrible happens in the world, and are constantly giving away product and having $1 and $2 deals. Since I agree with their political views, I always try to support them and make a purchase when they email these deals. The spices are always fresh and range from about $4-7 for a 1/4 cup. Honestly I get so many deals that my average spend is probably half that. I think I've bought every slice they sell over the past two years and am not disappointed. Both the website and store are easy to navigate and buying online and picking up in store is a breeze. This is a great place for gifts. They offer many gift box options - often packaged with tea towels or mugs. There are plenty of salt-free options and even garlic- and onion-free if you're sensitive to alliums. Conveniently located in downtown OP, foodies can enjoy a shopping trip here. There's an olive oil & vinegar shop a couple doors down, the culinary center across the street with kitchen gadgets & pre-made foodstuffs, ten thousands villages with coffee & chocolates from around the world, and you can tip it all off with a slice of pie at the Upper Crust next door. Street parking is pretty plentiful unless it's a farmers market day. Just go by it some spices - you won't regret it! I have no problem with someone who shares a different opinion from mine but to go on their website and in their magazine and spew such lies and vitriol is beyond belief for a business. Such a fun store! Love that Penzey's sells all the standard herbs and spices but they also make a lot of their own blends. The staff is really knowledgeable and helpful and offers great tips on how to use their products. They do great gift baskets here too- perfect for wedding gifts. I first learned of Penzy's from multiple friend's Facebook likes. I liked their message and wondered how good their spices were. Then someone on my local Buy Nothing group offered up a sample box and gifted it to me. I loved most of them, especially their salt-free Mural of Flavor. A couple of years later I'm running low on spices so check out the website and learn that they have brick and mortar stores. We had a trip planned to Kansas City and lo and behold they have a store not far from our friend's house. He'd been a fan for years so gladly took us there. A couple days prior to our arrival I received one of Penzy's daily emails and their Mural of Flavor was on sale. Hurrah. And even better, once there they honored their special of a sample box for free with just a $5 purchase, even though the special ended the day before. This is my go to spot for spices, everything is really fresh and you can actually taste the spices unlike the spices at the grocery store. People are very nice and helpful, the best part is they make it really easy to order online, they call you when you're order is ready then place your order out side in a box for you to pick up! so no need to go in the store. I was in Penzey's over a week ago and I can still smell all the spices wafting around. This potent spice shop plays the greatest hits with souped up salts, curries, chili powders, and any other combo of herbs and spices you could conjure up. What I love about this place is the quality. If one of their spice jars says it's good on burgers, then that's all you're going to need the next time you fire up the grill and it'll completely deliver on expectations. For things like chili, I can't go back to the grocery store packets after trying some with kick and real flavor here. They do a nice email club that'll nearly always net you an extra jar or two of spices when you go in depending on the month -- totally worth signing up for in my opinion! Kind of a nice evolution for them to offer this because they used to be a mail-order company based out of the upper midwest several decades ago who've come full circle. Oh last but not least, their hot cocoa is bomb dot com. Really tasty, rich cocoa for the winter time. read more

I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to flavor in my food, the stronger, the zestier, the *hotter* the better. That's right, so spice it *up*, baybee or take me to Spice World (not *that* Spice World) so I can add in my own. As soon as I stepped foot into Penzey's I felt like I had hit pure saffron (the "gold" of Spice World) for this place has it all. For example: -an entire cinnamon section (and I learned that Vietnamese is the most cinnamon-y of them all!) Cinnamon is one of my favorite spices! -a selection of salad dressing spices which is great for the person for likes to make flavorful dressings with less fat -various rubs and mixes to get a desired regional effect (Herbes de Provence FTW!) -individual spices/herbs A to Z -a glorious gift area The prices are on par with or probably even less expensive than your standard McCormick varieties from the supermarket, so I can't say this store is a guilty pleasure. It's pure pleasure, don't get me wrong, but nothing at all to feel guilty about. I might also add that its location is so perfect, right near the olive oil store and across from the Culinary Center. What's not to love about a place that gives you a large bottle of Chicago Steak seasoning, an Arizona Dreaming seasoning blend and a cool bumper sticker just for walking in and showing your email from them at the cash register. - a $22 value! The place is large and has multiple islands of spices, blends and gift items. Everything for sale is available for smelling and tips and recipes available. Excellent corporate values - they seem to back a lot of social justice issues I discovered after reading their newsletters. Ugh, I'm trying to cut down on 5 star reviews, but when places deserve 5 star reviews, then I'm giving it. The shop is across the street, kind of from Taste, and Harper's Quilt Shop. I needed some spices, and am tired of the nearly tasteless Tone's mini jars bought at the store. Low quality and boring. I needed some toasted poppy seeds for some rolls. I knew where to go. Penzey's has every spice available, and no, I didn't just buy poppy seeds. Taco seasoning, chip and dip mix, fresh bay leaves, curry powder and seasoning salt I didn't need. They also carry jars to put bulk spices in, with labels. I can only imagine my entire spices with those jars, instead of the discombobulation of tiny red bottles roling about. They carry a fine selection of rare spices, common spices, and have special mixes of spices, in different size of jars. I could go crazy nuts in this store. They know their products, and were helpful with answers. They carry 3 different kind of real vanilla, and I'm glad I have a decent place to buy it, now. I fully intend to. They have a set of magazines, and a cook book. I didn't find the prices too far out of line, for the quality...remember, I'm stepping up a bit, from the tired Tone brand in the grocery store. I knew there's things I should've bought and will be wanting, cause I missed getting them. So I'll have a trip back out there. The store smells wonderful. Pleasant location. Large floor space. All kinds of spices to smell and enjoy. Mixes, individuals, unique rubs and seasonings available in a relaxed, comfortable environment. What's not to enjoy? All that glitters is not gold. I encourage you to enjoy this place and select your spices carefully. Remember there may be some spices that are the same or better at your local big box store for a cheaper price. For example, the pepper choices were all three times the price of the three pepper blend available at bed, bath, and beyond. Unless your looking specifically for Tellicherry peppercorns for example then you should just suck it up and buy from Penzeys. Sometimes only Tellicherry will do for a great Garam Masala. For that reason I'm glad we have such a resource. read more

We have enjoyed the spices we have purchased at Penzeys Spices. We were caught completely off-guard today when we open a box of spices today that had a few cards inside that appeared to be spice related. One was labeled Salt & Pepper and was nothing more than someone's political opinion and trashing our current President. We had purchased some of these boxes of spice for friends and family members. We open each box and discarded the unwanted political cards. I read some other reviews and evidently this is something that Penzeys Spices does quite often. I would encourage everyone to check any box of spices you purchase from Penzeys Spices and determine if any political opinion promoted, is acceptable to you. I love to cook but spices are another bag all together. It can be daunting adventure and difficult to match what goes with what. Basically, a first date with that person you met on Match.com. Penzeys over in Overland Park is so beautiful. The plainness and simplicity of the store shows its in love with its product-spices. From Turkey to Tuscany, you're bound to find spices you've never heard but somehow dreamed of using. Fleur De Sel, Cassia Cinnamon and the Pure Wasabi were making me have a fit. I loved the wooden boxes/storage bins for everything. Who needs shelves? Not Penzey's. Wooden crates, gunny-sack type bags and some containers to show off the spices makes the atmosphere so inviting and organic. The place even offers up a coloring table for kids. And you all know how I feel about coloring. Double cool points. read more

Sign up for their emails and wait for the free offers to start rolling in. It shouldn't take long. It's a nice store and interesting to browse. The staff during my 2 visits haven't been too overbearing, but they also haven't been that helpful unless I've hunted them down. I guess there's a delicate balance, but at least if you would act like you see me there would be a good place to start. I haven't loved everything I've tried from Penzey's, but that's more of a taste thing than a quality issue. I really was excited about their hot chocolate mix and it has been the biggest disappointment so far. We'll keep trying some things now and then. read more

I've been a Penzeys customer for years and years, back when catalog ordering was the only option for many customers, as they only had brick and mortar stores in the Milwaukee area and Chicago way back when, and initially focused on mail order retail. I really appreciate being able to shop in a brick and mortar store, not have to wait for shipping, etc. Spices at Penzeys will cost you more than a little jar of Tone's at Price Chopper, true. For your more pedestrian needs, it may not always be worth it. But they really do have an excellent product, and I end up buying more of their proprietary spice blends and seasoning blends that are exclusive to them than I do straight spices, in the end. I rarely get dried herbs from them, because I grow fresh, but if there's something I don't grow, it's the place to get it. Their chili and taco seasonings are pantry staples for me, and their extracts are better in baking than supermarket brands. They also have a very nice vanilla sugar, made by packing whole vanilla beans in sugar and infusing the flavor that way. I generally don't drink my coffee with sweetener, but I'll make an exception if there is any of that on hand. It is also nice to sprinkle on French toast. They do a smoked paprika that is exceptional with eggs...sprinkled on a freshly fried egg on toast, it's great, and it turns egg salad into deviled egg salad, which is fantastic. Their curry powder is better than any I've had outside of Indian markets, and they do a really lovely Russian style seasoning, cheekily called "Tsardust Memories." It is by far the best thing you can sprinkle on a pork roast. Just delicious. They also offer VERY frequent discounts, deals, and giveaways via their e-mail list and facebook page, and I would estimate that the past half dozen times I've been in, I've gotten at least one bottle of either free or deeply discounted spice...sometimes a special on a specific spice, sometimes buyer's choice up to a certain price point. So that helps defray the slightly more premium price. And the quality is always there. Finally, they are a socially responsible company and always have been. Even from their mail order days, their catalog was actually a magazine featuring, between the spice descriptions and recipes, profiles of people in their Milwaukee area dedicated to social justice, community, human service, and acts of kindness. Bill Penzey, the owner, is not shy about speaking out regarding injustices in the media, and as I happen to agree with his politics, this is not a turnoff to me in the least. I find it refreshing to do business with somebody who actively does good in his community. All these accolades for the company, versus this specific location, but I have always had pleasant and helpful interactions with the staff here. They are helpful without being overbearing, and the store always looks top notch, as do all the stores I've been in. And, well, the store smells phenomenal. read more

This is by far my favorite spice shop! They have an excellent selection of spices, I have never left with out everything that I have needed. They have each of the spices available to smell which is great. Even simple spices such as cinnamon they have a huge selection of so that you're finding exactly what you need. Their staff is very helpful in helping you find what you need as well. The quality of their spices is far above average and worth the price that you pay.
