My culinary game has stepped up several notches over the past few years and places like the Tasteful Olive absolutely augment my cupboard. If I can finish a pasta with a flavored olive oil, such as garlic, lemon, or maybe blood orange, then count me in. It certainly ain't cheap, but great food is made from great ingredients, and those great ingredients are going to cost money. This most recent visit had me adding in a bottle of strawberry balsamic and I cannot wait to knock a salad out of the park with this stuff. I also added in a house-made lemon/basil/garlic olive oil blend that made a recent risotto of mine devastatingly fantastic. I walked in curious; I walked out with three bottles and tons of ideas. Super-friendly service and they're always helpful if you have questions about pairings or flavor profiles. I love the layout as well as the local goods that you can get, such as honeys, jams, or pasta. I had absolutely no idea that olive oil and vinegar could be so good that I'd be slurping them out of a sample cup, but, here we are. The first olive oil I ever tried from Tasteful Olive came beneath the clock tower just footsteps from their store. It was a green chile oil sample with eggs as there was a demo going on for the farmers market. The spice was real, the flavor was incredible and I went in to buy a small bottle right away. This place is perfect for the healthy eaters who want to bolster meals in a flavorful/heart healthy way. The staff is super-engaging and involved in the local community which comes through in a big way. You can also find a gift for just about anyone. The flavors get pretty creative, and while this is an upscale shop, you can find a bottle size to fit the budget. I'm a huge fan, and after trying about a dozen, I still think it's tough to top the green chile olive oil drizzled over eggs and peppers... ohhh man. read more

I'm torn and confused. I want to give The Tasteful Olive 5 stars but figure I better settle with 3 for the time being. I love what the store has to offer....olive oil and balsamic vinegars. I love that you get to taste them before buying. I love the blackberry balsamic that I bought poured over vanilla bean ice cream with fresh blackberries! I love that KC has a store that specializes in these products. I'm not a fan of "country decor" but I can overlook that if the product and service rise far above a decor choice that I'm not a fan of. The product definitely does. The service.....well! It did take awhile for anyone to greet us, which when you walk into the only store in town that specializes in oil and vinegar, you kinda want someone to say "hi" and tell you how it all works. I was pushed aside from an oil I was sampling by who turned out to be an owner, all so he could show another customer his favorites. He never said "excuse me" or asked if I needed any help! Frustrating!!! When I was finally greeted by a younger employee, she was helpful and nice. All the way from entering to checking out, it seems that the Tasteful Olive is happier to have what appears, middle-aged, suburban couples supporting them rather than anyone that doesn't fit that description. I think it great that you can sample the olive oils, however I would much rather sample the oil on bread. That is probably not realistic for the budget, but I would definitely try more oil. Don't waste your time. My family and I stopped by this unique shop shortly after they first opened. Apparently we didn't look like the caliber of clients they like in their store? We weren't greeted or acknowledged by the multiple employees who watched us walk through the door. We wouldn't have noticed, had they not run to assist everyone else that walked in. After being in the store all of 5 minutes, we felt so unwelcome by the employees that we decided it wasn't worth our time. I think its a great concept store, and love supporting local independently owned places, but I will not be recommending the (Dis)Tasteful Olive or running back anytime in the near future. read more

It's an olive oil store, the type of store that a food lover will be bound to love. They have about 30 types of olive oil and balsamic vinegars in big canisters. You walk around and sample as many as you like in little tasting cups. No longer does olive oil buying need to be a guessing game. My favorite was a blood orange infused olive oil from Tunisia (they also had a lemon and a lime infused one, but they weren't as good). A chocolate balsamic vinegar was also wonderful. It was tough to not come home with the raspberry balsamic vinegar. Nearly everything I tried was wonderful. A small problem however, is that I feel like I drank a half pint of olive oil and vinegar while I was there. I understand why they don't have bread samples to dip into the olive oil, but I sure could have used some bread at some point. Each olive oil and vinegar has a little sign stating it's origin, some of the flavors and food pairings/recipes for that oil. It's very helpful. The owners are also very helpful as they mill about helping customers decide. I'm sure if you were to go in and describe what you were cooking they would come up with a good olive oil to serve your purposes. Prices range from about $15-$18 per 375 ml bottle or $30-$40 per 750 ml bottle. It seems expensive but it's really not because a good flavorful olive oil goes a long way. They also sell some spice rubs and marinades along with some salsas and other homande-y goods that you find in little country home-y shops. It's well worth a visit, especially when the farmer's market days start up again. This little block in downtown OP is quickly becoming the place to go spend a Saturday morning and afternoon picking up some produce, spices, baked goods and now olive oils. Just to be safe, though, you should probably hit this place up at your first opportunity. I just don't know how long an olive oil place can last independent of the farmer's market crowds. read more

I've been in a couple of times and service has been very friendly and helpful. I like the store, but wish that in addition to olive oil and vinegars it offered more in the way of olives themselves -- there's such a wide variety that are hard (or impossible) to find in K.C. So I'd love to see lots of olives, as well as the oils. Unless I missed them I'd also like to see some other vinegars besides balsamics, like wine vinegars from various grapes and regions, and sherry vinegar. But with luck it will all happen! They do carry some prepared olive products and I have to rave about the small (and somewhat pricey) jars of olive salad, or muffuletta spread, they carry. It's just excellent -- it tastes exactly like the original from Central Grocery in the French Market in New Orleans! With some garlicky cold cuts like dried and cotto salami and some sliced provolone with plenty of the olive salad on a good sesame roll your taste buds will be transported back to the flavors of New Orleans in no time! I've already been back to stock up on the stuff! All in all this shop is a very nice addition to Kansas City's culinary scene! read more

Wow, wow, wow. On one street I've given two places five star reviews. Not that my five stars mean more than any others, but I just don't hand them out very often. Penzeys and The Tasteful Olive are well deserving. I had never been here before, a friend and employee at Penzeys told us to make sure we stopped by. Wow, the variety! Infused EVOO and vinegars from Australia, France, Italy, the US, you name it. The best part for me is that you can taste each one individually, or you can put a little vinegar and EVOO in a cup and taste of what a base of a simple salad dressing could be. We went with the Blood Orange EVOO along with the Raspberry Vinegar. The pairing along with a little honey, salt, pepper, and tabasco makes a killer salad dressing. We served it over Napa Cabbage and some baby field greens and veggies. Highly recommended Get on down and get some. read more

My goodness it has taken me quite some time to write this review and having read the others, I don't really need to say too much more than this is a MUST try if you are a lover of salads and creating the perfect blend of homemade dressing with creative flavors. I agree with Ken B. the decor is lame. I agree with Shana S. this is MY fav store in the KC area. I sampled just about every single one. I recall a lemon infused olive oil that I thought would go great with scallops. I ended up leaving with a pear balsamic and when I arrived home I whipped up the best salad --ever! Baby mixed greens, with goat cheese crumbles and candied walnuts. Thinly sliced pears for a topping. In the dressing finely chopped pears, the new balsamic, cracked pepper and olive oil. I came here on the recommendation of a very nice employee of Penzey's, who said their Blood Orange olive oil was brownie-heaven waiting to happen. It was decently populated due to the post-farmer's market crowd, but there were plenty of staff roaming around assisting customers. I was never greeted at the door, nor asked how I was doing as I wandered for 15 minutes tasting this and that. After a while, I started pouring my own bottles for my selections. Apparently that's a no-no (of course I didn't read the big signs saying so). However, I wasn't made aware of this until I had filled my third and final bottle myself. Their product is, beyond a doubt, top notch. Their service, well... like many reviewers have said before, it seems hit and miss. After I was approached by a lady who (nicely) informed me I wasn't supposed to pour my own, she took my bottles for wrapping and left. I was obviously a completely ignorant first-timer, but it would've been nice to have her tell me I could wait at the register for my bottles. Instead, I was allowed to follow my bottles to the wrapping counter and linger like a creepy uncle, while the kids prepping my stuff looked at me as such. In summary, I feel like I wasn't appropriately addressed like a potentially paying customer due to the way I was dressed (jeans and a KC Wizards jersey) and my age. The clientele that was being catered to around the store seemed to be older and more well-to-do than I. The few other younger folk were also seemingly ignored as well. However, I can handle being ignored. I will come back for their incredibly delicious and aromatic oils and vinegars. read more

Sweet Balsamic vinegar that is actually drinkable and olive oil without an aftertaste. Yes, they have olives you can get in a jar. The olives are stuffed. But it was the turrenes of oil and vinagar that was impressive. We spoke to an employee that was VERY knowledgeable on the oils and vinegar. Best place in town to buy olive oil. They have so many flavors to try and vinegars too. I think all their Balsamic Vinegars are at least 7 yrs old if not older. The Strawberry one is my favorite. It is perfect by itself on a spinach salad. The Tuscan Herb Oil and Vinegars are excellent for Italian cooking. The blood orange vinegar is great on chicken. The staff is super friendly and helpful and they make great suggestions. They even have recipes for you to take and try. I was in the Tasteful Olive last week and had a varied experience. I was greeted by a friendly young man who introduced me to the products and helped "break the ice" by showing me a couple great combinations of oil and vinegar to taste. He and another employee (a young lady) were helpful in answering some questions I had the more I explored around. I ended up with a bottle of oil and a bottle of vinegar and some great smelling pasta. When I got to the counter an older lady was busy 'answering some important e-mail' she said, and took a couple minutes before she was ready to ring me up. Then she asked me if anyone had greeted me yet today?! It just seemed odd as I'd been walking around and having an off-and-on conversation with a couple of the employees there all the while she was on the computer. She asked me about 6-7 questions before she finally got around to my items... at which point she proceeded to re-sell me everything I was buying! How wonderful all these things were and told me that I would now go home and make lovely salads and very special marinades etc. (Almost an order!) and on and on It took forever for her to finish! Almost as long as it took for me to explore the store (which I was happy to do), but at this point I was really ready to get out of there. Come to find out, the register lady was the owner! In any case, a great store. Perhaps search out the assistance of the younger, calmer, more pleasant workers. read more

This might be my new favorite store. We just randomly went here one morning because Husband and I both had the day off. I am so glad that we did. This place is amazing. We walked in and a woman offered to give us an initiation into the workings of the store explaining how tan signs labeled the oils and blue and green signs labeled the vinegars. There are little tasting cups next to each vat of oil and vinegar. We tried some different ones and the people left us alone so we could just go around trying different flavors. There are coconut balsamics, black currant balsamics, fig, pear, apple... you name it, they've got it. Same with the olive oils. They had listings of good pairings between the oils and balsamics if you want to combine them for dressings, marinades, or dipping bread. Each vat had its own recommendations for styles of foods and other possible uses. Each oil and vinegar has three prices: one for a 200 ml bottle, one for 375 ml bottle , and one for a 750 ml bottle. I was overwhelmed by the awesomeness of this store. We left with the Tuscan Herb oil and Black Currant balsamic vinegar, and a handy little emulsifier. (I have a new excitement for salads) Plus my husband is not easily impressed, and he was very impressed when we left. They also have selections of olives, pasta, spices, peppercorns, jams, etc... I have loved and purchased from this store for years. I have filled many rewards punch cards purchasing hundreds of dollars of oil for myself, friends and family. This summer, I arrived with another full punch card which would have earned me a small free bottle. The owner announced that they now have a new computer based rewards program and my filled punch card would not be honored. I asked her if she was serious...I've literally spent a small fortune in this store. But she was steadfast. She would not honor my filled punch card to receive my free small bottle. I really like this store. The staff is friendly and very helpful. It's important to know your product, and they do. You can sample almost everything in the place. I like the ratings on the different aspects of the oils and vinegars, and so far, they've been spot on. Some might think they're overpriced, but I can tell what I've purchased is high quality, so I don't mind paying a little bit more. It's worth it. The tasteful olive does seem to offer a little bit wider of a selection in their products than most other stores. I do like that they have seasonal / limited production run products here. The store can get quite busy, but the staff is always willing to help you with whatever you need. I've always been very happy with their products and I sometimes swing by when I am in the area just to see what new products they have. read more

I originally met Jeanne and her son in law @ a business trade show. They invited me down to their store which is absolutely incredible. The store is designed to be interactive with customers which allows you to taste the different varieties of Olive Oils. The entire retail experience was awesome and they even had the option to ship my gift. I also had a mishap that was entirely my fault and the son in law took immediate action to correct the problem. Currently over dosing on the Blood Orange Olive oil and lavender infused age balsamic vinegar. Stay away from the truffle salt. Its worse that crack... I assume. An amazing place! I accidentally stumbled in to it and was greeted by a charming and very knowledgable sales women. I was shown how to do some of the pairings with the Balsamic Vinegars and the Olive oils. I would never have considered tasting about a half of a teaspoon of olive oil alone but when I did I was pleasantly surprised. Then when they added one of the flavored Balsamic vinegars with it I found a new love. I left with 10 bottles and cannot wait to get back. I live four hours away but it will be a stop I make every time I am in town. I am going to check to see if they ship. Well worth the stop. Every time I go in here it's bustling but the staff is always so friendly despite the crowds, answering questions but allowing you to browse and taste in peace.Although tasting balsamic vinegar straight from a cup is quite the shock to the palette, it's worth it when you add it to that special recipe and it takes it up to 11. Oils and spices and vinegars.. Oh My! The Taseful Olive has opened my eyes and heart to an entirely different way of cooking... I learned so much about the oils and vinegars from the knowlegable and friendly woman that helped me. My kids were even allowed to try a couple of samples. I now have a very nice selection of oils and vinegars (over several months). I have been inspired to cook new things and have found that vinegar isn't just for cleaning coffee pots or making Easter Eggs. When I noticed my husbnd eyeing our ever growing selection of bottles, I joked that we needed to buy a house with a bigger kitchen to accommodate all of our Tasteful Olive bottles! Dinner is so good. And it's not just us either. :) Neither of our families are from the KC area and they always request some of the specialty vinegar and/or oils for holidays and special occasions. And the staff is very knowledgeable and very, very thoughtful and now I'm addicted to their vinegars for my salads. I can't even hardly stand any other balsamics. This is one of our favorite stores in Downtown OP! We work in the health and fitness industry and send all of our clients here as well to stock up on their olive oils & vinegars for their salad dressings. I cannot say enough good things about the store, the owners, & the quality product. We have attended a couple of their olive oil tastings and love learning about their craft. Based on website information of a Saturday 8am opening time, arrived at 9:30am only to be told that the store wasn't open until 10am. I was told the store wasn't going to start opening at 8am until the following weekend, to coincide with the Farmer's Market. Apparently they don't proof read their website for accuracy. The door was unlocked and staff were inside (standing around), prior to a meeting. I was asked to come back later - and offered no apology or even surprise that I was inconvenienced by erroneous information on their website. I was surprised they couldn't spare one employee to help me with a short shopping list, but rather expected that I would return. I did not and spent my money someplace else.
