FPO and I found the Peddler's Daughter on Yelp. It's a small shop on Merriam Lane, right next door one of the Nigro's western stores. They sell a variety of jams spice mixes, candies, and bottled sodas, along with fresh made sandwiches and pre made pastries. I noticed they have a lot of Amish made items there. The people were very nice, very friendly. It was lunchtime and we got some fresh chili (served for a few hours, 11-1, I think) and we also got some cinnamon rolls with maple frosting. It was all so good! If you're in the area, you should check them out. If you're not in the area but would like to take a little adventure and find a quirky little store with quality food and friendly people, you should check them out. read more

This was a fun store with a lot of variety in their products. Lots of pickled eggs, jams, fruit butters, relishes, sauces....a small section of cheeses and unique baking mixes (e.g. churro waffle mix), many obscure sodas in glass bottles. They had fresh tomatoes and watermelon when we were there. A bakery case was full of pies and cinnamon rolls. Several people came in and purchased sandwiches to go while we were there. Since I'm a grandmother, I really enjoyed looking through their candy section for my grandson. Ended up getting a sample pack of cherry, watermelon and raspberry cotton candy. Easily could have spent more. They had a nice selection of freeze dried candies, which if you've ever had, you know are delicious and all the rage these days. Friendly owner too! Ok, how has this little shop flown under the radar for so long? What a total hidden gem. It has everything you could want in a nostalgic roadside store. The setting is rustic, and it isn't one of those places trying to recapture the spirit of days gone by, selling upscale merchandise meant to look old-school. It is THE REAL DEAL! Everything from jams to old fashioned candy, a ton of pop varieties, antiques, cheeses, fresh veggies - she has it all. I have bought old lanterns, homemade carrot cake, and the best gingersnaps - and every time I'm in there I see something different. It is truly like going back to a kinder time and it makes my heart happy! Saving the best for last... THE PIES!!! The most incredible homemade pies, and lots of variety if you get there before they sell out. So grateful to have this shop so we don't completely lose our connection to simple pleasures. I've been driving by here for years and I always think "I should stop in there soon." Well, today I finally stopped. It's such an adorable little store. It feels like a general store or one of the places you'd find while visiting someplace like Weston. It's a mix of local food items (jams, salsas, pies, cheese, produce, candy, specialty sodas, etc.), antiques, and garden decor. Things change with each season. Around the holidays they carry more more gift type items such as candies and popcorn. In the spring they have plants for sale. They also make their own sandwiches using homemade bread and Boarshead lunchmeat. Sandwiches are packed and ready to go each day and cold soda is available, so it makes for a very quick lunch stop. My daughter discovered that they sell containers of Lucky Charms marshmallows. She was so excited, as she should be, since the best part of Lucky Charms is the marshmallows. ;) Prices are reasonable considering almost everything is homemade or local. This would be a good place to come when looking for items to put in a gift basket or special treat to bring as a hostess gift. The owner is so sweet and friendly. I love this place!. Stepping inside is like walking back in time to a country store. There are baked goods, produce and products you've loved since childhood. They have local honey and so many wonderful things. I love the smell of wood fires, they carry a sachet that smells just like it. I got it once and went back for more. There is a friendly welcome and a lot of return customers. I wish it were open later as I'm in that area later usually but it is worth a special trip. The Peddlers Daughter is like a old fashioned country market that married a gourmet food tourist trap and gave birth to a fresh produce stand. I can't imagine anyone visiting and not walking out with multiple purchases. I double dog dare ya! I left with a slab of butter cheese, a jar of giardiniera, 2 plants for the flower garden, and some coconut creme pie. Not only did I leave with a handful of goodies, but I also walked away having a great conversation with the owner Tami; a genuinely friendly and sincere proprietor. It's refreshing to interact with a person that takes such pride in her business. This will be the reason I jump off of I-35 and travel down Merriam Lane whenever I'm in the area, to grab some fresh produce or hand crafted food items. This store has ladies who make the best homemade pies and compared to other pie shops in town that charge around $25, pies here are from $12 to $17. We have our order in for Key Lime, coconut, and butterscotch; they also have more traditional pies if you like apple or cherry. I was really surprised this place wasn't on Yelp yet. People need to come here! So, I'm trying more and more to shop and eat locally. I've been to River Market, and I wasn't very impressed with a lot of the produce, not to mention it's more of a drive than I care for. The Peddler's Daughter is located right next to Nigro's. When I came here, the inside was a bit cluttered with some boxes and things but it didn't look like it was always like that. There was a really nice variety, but not an overwhelming amount of produce. Red an white potatoes, yellow/red/white onions (huge!,) sweet bell peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, green/red grapes, oranges, just to name some stuff. There is a lot of awesome jellies/jams. Pretty much every berry or fruit you've ever heard of plus a couple. Pumpkin butter? I've never seen pumpkin butter before now, but apparently it's a thing! There's also apple butter and some other fruit butters. There's several delicious sounding muffin/brownie/baking mixes. It's pretty awesome. I was excited to find the place, and I'm definitely going to make it a regular stop. Plus, Tammy (I'm not sure if she's the owner or an employee) was SO friendly. I saw an article in The Kansas City Star Magazine a year or so ago about this cool farm stand and thought to myself, "I need to go check that out." Well, I threw away the newspaper and forgot all about it. Yesterday, I decided to avoid the traffic on I35 and took Merriam Drive (that's a very pretty and quaint drive BTW) and stumbled upon this cute farm stand. As soon as I walked in the door, I remembered that article...I FOUND IT! Tami is a tall, thin, tan blonde with pale blue eyes. She is FULL of energy and about the sweetest thing you'll ever meet. I selected way more items than I intended because it all looked so good. It tasted good too. Tami followed me around and cut big bites of the peaches and tomatoes for me to try. At the counter she had some peaches and cream corn on the cob. When I asked how much, she said, "Oh, just take them. I get a new batch in the morning." Then she added up my purchase and rounded it down a little for me. She said, "I like to round down." So I pulled out an extra dollar and said, "I like to round up." She took the dollar and put it in the "Pay it Forward" jar. The Peddler's Daughter is open year round. Inside, you will find walls full of Amish canned goods, as well as some gourmet sauces and condiments. Get off the highway, slow down, drive Merriam Lane and go check out Tami's place.
