I reached out to several currency exchange places before my trip to Iceland and Sweden to try to figure out which one gave the best rate. This one was the most responsive and willing to work with me to obtain Icelandic Krona, which almost no spot had. Before traveling, I called several times and the person on the phone told me he can definitely get Icelandic Krona within 3 days, after I gave a $100 cash deposit. I discovered that this office is located inside a little vegan shop. The person behind the counter had already reached out to inquire about Icelandic Krona, so it was available the next morning. They were already in possession of Swedish Krona already, so I was able to get that right away. The person who worked there was super friendly, as well as knowledgeable. He gave me tips on how to exchange the Icelandic Krona back to US dollars. He also waived the $10 fee. I would go here in the future if I need to exchange money again. read more

Thank you yelpers for helping me find a currency exchange that's not outrage like the others i've been asking around. It's a little gem inside the one grand central place building so you can easily miss it since there's a sign outside the building that states only occupants or certain visitors permitted. The service charge is the least of all other foreign exchange markets or banks i visited, and if you check into yelp, you get the service charge fee waived, which I regretfully didn't do, but it wasn't much, so the chinese in me don't feel too bad losing a few dollars. read more

The absolute best in the business. I've been using People's for 10 years for many different currencies and have always been very happy with the service. They always have the currency and at the best price you can find. You can trust them 100% that you will get a fair deal. The current location in the hallway in a pizza parlor is very unfortunate. They had to move out of their fabulous location on 42nd St due to a rent increase and are looking for a better space. But don't let that deter you. Shopped around for the best exchange rates (there are some places that really, really screw you) and Peoples Foreign exchange had the best. The proprietor let me know over Instant Message how much I would get before I ever stepped in the shop. And he said he'd waive the few if I reminded him. Of course i forgot to remind him about waiving the fee when i saw him. But when I came back again to exchange currency he remembered me and waived the fee. Raina is the best: real professional, won't waste your time. I got the best rates here! It beat out Currency Exchange International (In Apple Bank) by about $50. And it would have been $80 had I not waited 2 days for a visit. So I suggest using this place. I'm definitely coming back! I think that'll helps to contact these currency exchange locations in advance for a quote, but I'm not too sure of how much of a difference it really makes. For this location here, Raina called me back in about 15 minutes to confirm my rubles to dollars, ahead of my visit which was very helpful and kind. Great business sense!!! The line/mobile connection was a bit poor though on the first round of calls so be aware that. But she worked though it and I move away from my spot so all is fair. BEWARE!! DO YOUR RESEARCH!! I went to this place based on reviews saying they offer a competitive exchange rate. I feel like I got completely screwed. I paid an exchange rate of 1.23 on the EUR whereas A&S Foreign Exchange (which is nearby) was offering 1.18 (Current rate is 1.16). Please don't make the same mistake as me, I could easily have saved around $50 by walking a few blocks. I probably could have gotten a better rate at the airport! If only I knew what was considered a reasonable markup I don't think they will stay in business long Either they started charging a much higher markup or these Yelp reviews are fake. read more

Despite working behind Grand Central it took me a minute to find this place inside 60 E 42nd St / One Grand Central (immediately to the left of Chase and opposite Vanderbilt Ave). Now I know where it is, it very convenient to Grand Central and midtown. Service was friendly and efficient. Taking a trip to Brazil very soon and needed some currency. Turned to trusty Yelp for some direction on where to find a good rate on Brazilian Real. Yelp has the a nice option to send a message to get a quote. That was the easy part. I reached out to three companies. Peoples got back to me very quickly. In about 20 minutes. I was told the rate and that they had the currency in stock. Other companies did not. They also offered to hold the currency to the side for me. They also had the best rate and if you checkin on Yelp they will take off the $5 transaction fee. I arrived about half hour later at their grand central location and my Currency was ready and waiting for me. Transaction was quick and easy. The price quotes was what I received it for. Too bad, came here in person but the guy couldn't match Best Value Currency near Times Square. So I had to schlep over to 8th and 43rd. Great place. Good service. Fast and friendly. While I didn't shop their rates they seemed reasonable and had all the currencies I needed on hand (euros, Czech crowns and Hungarian forints). Plus they're really close to my office. Will definitely go there again. And not hard to find. By far the best exchange for USD-EUR I found in the city! I exchanged $480 and got 393 Euros. Other places that quoted me were only going to give me anywhere from 375-380 but no where close to 393 which was closest to the actual exchange rate for the day. Plus, no fees whatsoever! I decided I wanted to save myself the foreign credit card charges and ATM charges and actually see how much it would cost me to exchange my dollars before My actual trip. I found this place on yelp and went in crossing my fingers, I initially thought they had charged me zero commission as that is what the clerk told me (and they do write 0$ fee on the receipt they give you) but unfortunately upon further review (I obviously suck at math) I realized they had charged me about 4% commission which is still amazing considering they would have charged me about 14% if I were to do it in Scotland or at the airport. Their service was fantastic, and they have to make their money somewhere right; so I'm okay with the fee as long as I feel like I save myself a couple bucks in the long run.
