This was my first time visiting Peoria Cafe and I asked for recommendations, she was helpful and provided me with guests favorites. I was impressed on how fast food was served! Food portion was generous and the price affordable. I had the chorizo plate with over medium eggs, potatoes and beans, It was all so flavorfu. Food was very expensive for what we got. Beans were not salted and obviously from a can. Scrambled eggs were greasy balls of eggs. Menudo wasn't the right price on menu, we expected 12.99 from menu and it was 15 a bowl for the small. The small! I will be eating home and opening a can for 5 bucks in the future . This was our first time here after family members recommended it to us. Great menu choices, I ordered the Cowboy which was a country fried steak with hash browns, eggs and toast. It was pretty good! Our waitress suggested the cinnamon roll as an appetizer for breakfast- something I've never done- I have to say she was right! Fast, attentive service even though they were absolutely packed. Friendly staff that sat my brother and I right away. Not 1, not 2 , but 3 staff came and asked for our drink order within 5 minutes. Welcome to Old Town Peoria. This spot has been here for decades and is still going strong. Located in a shopping center with quite a few businesses it's easily accessible from all directions. From the outside it doesn't look like much and it doesn't change much on the inside either. It's definitely your no frills old school breakfast spot. The menu is good size with some great options. From chicken fried steak to eggs Benedict they have it all. If you like the very basics there's the two egg and meat option. Make sure to try their biscuits and gravy because the biscuit alone will have you glad you did. It was so light and fluffy, great flavor and With three gravy on top it all just came together. I had eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast today as well and it was all pretty tasty. The bacon was crispy but not overdone while my eggs were cooked to my asking. The location is good size with booths and well as tables. If you come alone or don't want to wait they also have a bar to sit and enjoy. The location was clean. If I could do a - I would This absolutely breaks my heart to write this review my family has been coming here for years... But ever since the restaurant changed ownerships it has slowly getting worse and worse Both with Service and Food, which is so sad The last three times I've gone in there they've ran out of something whether it be potatoes rolls and then when they did have potatoes, they were absolutely horrible. I didn't know it was possible to mess up a baked potato so bad. I've spoken to the owner several times in regards to items being out such as the rolls and so-and-so and her comment was I order when it's out it's out I've been in the service industry for most of my life and I can't even imagine telling a customer that no kind of empathy or apology simply just when they're out there out!!! Busy busy day on Father's Day. Our name was added to the list and once I felt we were passed, I asked the staff inside. A lady that I can only assume was the owner, made the correction and made it right. We were sat down and enjoyed our meal. I had the Juevos Rancheros. It has their spin to it and was tasty. We also ordered pancakes and eggs. Be advised the pancakes are huge. We ordered a kids Mickey Mouse Pancake breakfast, probably a 10" pancake with a 3" pancake for each ear. Wow. This used to be a pretty good place for a weekend breakfast. The Friday fish fry was awesome. I'm not sure what happened here, but the last half dozen trips to this place have been pretty brutal. The floors were filthy, tables need to be cleaned after we were seated and the bathrooms needed attention. The food is still edible, but barely. The lady at the check stand was rude when I asked about contactless payment, erroneously claiming that it cost them too much. The waitresses are not nearly as friendly as they used to be, and prices have gone through the roof. The fish dinner used to be $14, and now it's $20. We used to get the "all you can eat" as a to go order for about $22. Now it's $30 out the door. Sorry, the food and ambience is just not worth that. And it would seem that they just discovered cinnamon rolls, as that's all they want to talk about and keep trying to force them on us. We ordered them one time and they were horrible - dry and crunchy. We're done with this place. Caveat emptor. Update to respond to Peoria Cafe's reply: I understand that prices will not be the same 8 years later. But the prices are now out of our budget. Especially for food that doesn't meet our standards. My son had a baseball game so we turned to walk out as we did not have time to sit down. We each had the afternoon special of the 2-pc Beer Battered Friday Fish Fry...and yes...we could see the chef pouring the beer into the batter! Not only did we get 2 pieces of perfectly cooked cod for an extremely reasonable price (for a little more $$ you can also get the 4-pc dinner,) our dinners were served with French Fries (you could also get different potato choices,) Cole Slaw, a dinner roll, and tartar sauce. In a word...yum! The service is consistently cordial and friendly and the ambiance is extremely congenial and informal so we always look forward to dining there. All day breakfast is another plus and the coffee is decent. The servers are very competent and it is nice to have a mature servers as opposed to young kids that don't really care. Very disappointing today. The menudo was gross today. I was served burnt meat from the bottom of the pot. The flavor was way bland, a tortilla that was still cold. Not even wrapped in foil. A friend and I went here on a whim on a Sunday morning around 10:30am. We had planned to go to the nearby Biscuits Café, but it had too long of a wait. Peoria Café was also quite busy, but the hostess told us we could be seated immediately at the counter, so we took her up on it. We got coffee almost immediately; there was a woman seemingly designated to coffee duty, which I appreciated. We got frequent water and coffee refills. However, it took a long time (maybe 20 minutes?) for our server to take our food order due to the busyness. I didn't mind since my friend and I were sipping coffee and catching up. Once we did order, the food came quickly. I got a half order of cream chipped beef, which turned out to be one whole biscuit. These were BIG biscuits. I would say each half was bigger than your whole average biscuit. I must have looked surprised because the server laughed and said she gave me the smallest one. But hey, I wasn't complaining! It was not the best creamed beef I've had, but it was good and so was the price ($7.79 for the half order). My friend got French toast with baked apples and enjoyed hers too. The cafe has a very casual, family-oriented diner vibe. It did feel a bit hectic inside, and I thought it was fairly loud, which was distracting for me while trying to talk with my friend. My wife's favorite place for menudo, when we are this far north. Today I had a pastrami omelette that was pretty good, Swiss cheese and pastrami, how can you go wrong. My wife had the chorizo and eggs, it's Friday so no Mendo, but there wasn't much flavor today. Most of the time you can't go wrong eating breakfast here but today was just not their day. I have been a long time customer with Peoria Cafe. I have been going there for years. Long time ago, I used to go every Friday. But our work schedule changed & and we only go there once in a while. I am familiar with the owners. They are very nice, I love the food and staff. The prices used to be great. My husband & I Used to eat two dinners for under $20. I know time has changed. I usually order Pork Chops, Fries, Veggies and clam chowder soup. Prices went up through years. Last time Order-it was around $14.99 with three sides. Today, was completely different! Today a pork chop lunch was $14.99 with 2 sides. So I ordered French fries and soup. I added veggies. The veggies this time cost $4.69 extra. Total bill cost me $21.17 for one meal. That's with no tax, no tip, no beverage & no dessert. When I got the soup, it was red. I asked them , what it's that soup. They told me Navy Bean. I told them I don't like Navy bean and I want clam chowder. They said I can NOT get that soup for one of my sides - I have to pay extra for Clam Chowder. I looked up The price for Clam chowder soup- $5.99 extra. I asked the the staff to switch the two soups out - they said no. I told them I want a refund for the navy bean soup. They told me that I have to call the owner and talked to them about a refund. I argue and argue with them. It will cost me almost $30 for what I used to get half the price while ago. They finally give me the soup. The waitstaff said she had to buy the soup out of her money. She stamped away BEFORE I was able to give her the other soup, and extra tip or said Thank you. So I just left. This is the worse experience I had with this place. Prices are beyond high now. Even though I love their food, I'm not coming back. That lost a value customer over being stingy. So sad. Also, my pork chops was somewhat burnt this time as well. And the pork chops was thin for the money I payed. I guess I will take my business to Brothers Restaurant Next time. My wife and I have been wanting to try this place out for some time. Noticing that they open early and close by 2 pm gave me the impression that they might have a smaller menu and do things well instead of doing a lot with mediocre results. Well, this is not actually the case. Here's what I mean. They have a bowl grits for $7. That's quite a profit margin. For that price it better be damn good! Sadly, it was just the typical white grits boiled in water. No taste. I had to season it myself with butter and cheese, which now took it up to $8.50. It tasted a little better, but I shouldn't have to do this. If you boil grits in water, you don't know what the hell you're doing! Boil them in chicken stock, that'll take care of the seasoning. Add some thyme and some quality cheese, like Harvarti, and then you can charge $8.50. Likely we will come back and try a few more things, but so far they're not off to a good. read more
