What a disaster! I made an appointment on-line to purchase and have four tires installed. Having past long wait time experiences @ Pep Boys, I called the day before my appointment to make sure there would be no problems with the tire purchase, making sure they would have the tires in inventory, and to get an estimate of how long I'd have to wait. The employee I spoke with assured me that yes, they'd have the tires and that the installation should take no more than 60-75 minutes considering my early morning appointment. The next day, I arrived promptly at the given time, was assured there would be no problem, and waited in the Customer Waiting area. That's were things went awry. Over an hour after I arrived, a manager informed that they only had THREE of the tires in the store, and that I'd have to wait another HOUR for them to get the 4th tire delivered. He tried offering me alternative tires (an inferior model that is apparently only manufactured for Pep Boys). I declined and waited, and waited, and waited. I finally left the store with the four tires installed....3 1/2 HOURS LATER. 3 1/2 HOURS to have four tires installed after calling 24 hours prior to assure there would be no problems. And, as added insult, there were no apologies made, no acknowledgement of the customer's time wasted, or any sort of compensation for the Pep Boys' mismanagement and disrespect of their customer's time and patronage. Only AFTER I filled out an on-line survey did a manager call me to half-heartedly apologize, but still not offering any sort of compensation. So, here's my review and recommendation for future customers: find another place to buy tires where they actually respect you as a customer. And, obviously making an appointment for service is a meaningless effort. read more

As a regular customer at various Pep Boys location for 4 years, I'm pretty familiar with their services. But this particular young guy Zack working in the services tires and parts department stood out among the rest. When I brought my car here for oil change and check engine light inspection, he listened to and addressed all the issues at hand, even jotting down notes and explaining to me in layman's terms what is going on. Even tho it was a particularly busy morning, he took the time to personally check the tread on my tires, and recommended an alignment. AVOID THIS PLACE... you see all the other bad reviews?,pay attention. Extremely over priced jobs for what parts are really valued at, hidden shop fees and diagnostic fees through the roof. I'm afraid of them tampering with my car because it doesn't have any serious problems, that's why I won't ever take it there for something cheap/simple. Then they use the excuse of their credit card " oh you have 6m to pay it off " that's not the point that doesn't give you the rights to price gouge as I still have to pay. They are in the business of scamming and my husband who is an private mechanic (incarcerated can't help me) which is why I know a thing or two about the game, they take advantage of the wrong folks. If I could give no stars I would. I came to this location April 12 for an oil change. I was charged 93.00 dollars. Today May 4, less than three weeks my maintenance required is on. I took my car to my normal mechanic he advised I needed oil change. These thief didn't give me no oil change. I will never come here again and I advise others to stay away. read more

Would rate them zero stars if I could. I have been getting oil changes at this location the past two years. Each time the wait times have been getting longer and longer. The most recent (and last) visit I scheduled the first appointment in the am. The sales manager at the service desk ensured me I would be in and out. He said he had a few jobs tying up his lifts from the night before and would have them finished in 15 minutes. I explained I was going to walk to the Dunkin Donuts (closest to Essex st.) and would be back. (bad move) An hour later, while on my way back, I called to ensure it was completed. He said he wanted to go over something with me ? When I got back the truck was still on the lift and the oil change had not been done. The associate said I needed a new axle and the mail oil seal near the pan was leaking ? He asked me to come closer to the vehicle while his mechanic (if you can call them that) took a hammer and banged on the roter to show me there was play in the front axle. He then showed me oil stains on the bottom of the oil pan. He quoted me $500 for the oil pan gasket replacement and $150 labor for the right front axle. He said he couldnt quote me labor as he couldnt find the part number in his system. I decided to take the truck to a local mechanic. As soon as I told him what Pep Boys told me was wrong he said. " I will guarantee you that their diagnosis is incorrect". Thirty minutes later he said there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with the front axle and the valve gasket was leaking NOT the oil pan gasket. Thankfully I saved $350 (+ the cost of the axle). CONSUMER BEWARE !!! read more

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT! The service department installed higher value parts than what required by coupon. Thoroughly disappointed with the fact that you come in to do the winter check and they charge you double the online value for parts simply because you didn't order them online! How would you know what you need before you come to the store!! It's a scam! $13 brake pads for $30!! Update: I've had nothing but exceptional service since the issue with the higher priced parts. The service department team have gone above and beyond with service and repairs. They make it a point to check recalls and will fix them without hesitation. They patiently take the time to explain what service is needed and you never feel pressured. Number one service manager is Mark. Update: They replaced front axle and leaking hose and alignment, I leave and again the alignment issue so I take it back. $2,500 dollars and they don't check their work!! The next day the front brakes started grinding!! I just had them replaced and yet the brakes and rotors are shot! I'm done with this place. They are overpriced and add items to your service that you can't possibly prove you don't need because you're not a mechanic. I always leave there feeling I've been hustled. read more

I went in to replace the worn rear tires, I asked to have the new tires installed in the front and move the, still good, front tires to the rear. They told me I needed a bunch of unrelated fuel system repairs, which I declined. After two hours the car was ready. They did not install the new tires in the front as requested. The battery light was on and since it is literally 5 minutes away from me I took the car there. After a check they said my alternator was shot. Which surprised me because I just had that changed about a year and a half ago. At this Pep Boys, of course. I was told it would be about $1000 and the part was free but the labor cost was expensive. So about 7 hours later I get the call and pick up the car, cost:$1500. Pretty shocked. I spoke to the guy who checked me out, Connor and he gave me a bit of a discount. Thanks. Still payed $250 more than I was told. But thank you Connor. The time before this I had to get tires and shocks and they didn't even ask what kind of tires I wanted they just put the most expensive ones on them. O.K. my fault for not being on top of them. But wouldn't better customer service be to go over the types of tires and the cost with the customer? I mean my car is over 10 years old, why would I go with premium tires? I started to use Pepboy services recently. Before today, I was not able to tell if their parts and services were good at all. But today, when my Honda service center told me my brake fluid was dark and low, I was not happy at the beginning since it was changed in Pepboy 5 months ago (about 5000 miles). So I took it back to Pepboy. The guy took a look and then changed the brake fluid for me without any hard time and additional cost. I usually don't like to come back with a complaint. But this time, I want to give a thumb's up to their service. I do have a similar problem with the brake pads and rotors for my Mazda3. I will come back again tomorrow. I called and spoke to a very nice guy, Fernando, who told me there were a few cars, so I should bring in my vehicle in about 1 and a half hours (@ 3pm). So when I arrived, one of the workers, Johan, tells me I didn't have an appointment, that if I call on the same day, it is NOT considered an appointment, so I would have to wait 2 hours...one for them to place my car on inside, and the other for them to change the 3 tires. I leave and return after an hour and a half, and my vehicle was in the same exact place I left it...when I asked Fernando what the story was, he informs me I was kicked out of the system, and appeared to be a "walk-in." I was started to feel really annoyed, so I asked him to inquire further what was going on. The Johan character comes back and tells me, it was going to be a while because there were people ahead of me...I said, "Yes, I understand, but you said it would be an hour and almost 2 hours have gone by and my vehicle hasn't even been moved..." Long story short, I was there for over 3 hours to have a tire changed... I would NEVER go back there, and I would NEVER recommend anyone to take their vehicle there. HORRIBLE service!!! read more

I had an appointment to have my car seen - I had come in because I had a check engine light in the car and although it seemed to be running fine, we were planning a long trip and wanted it looked at. At first, everything seemed fine and my car was up on the lift pretty quickly so I felt good about things. The initial inspection took a bit longer than expected, maybe an hour, but it wasn't too ridiculous. They said the light had come on because of an emissions issue, which could be a variety of things - they recommended starting with changing the gas cap as sometimes that is the only problem, and if the light came back on later I could bring it back and they would try the next thing. They also said I needed two new tires and new brakes. This all sounded plausible so I told them to go ahead and do it, as long as it wouldn't be too long as I had to travel in a couple hours. They said they would try to be done in 60 minutes but it could be 90 minutes. After about half an hour of waiting, however, guys from the garages starting coming into the area where the customers are, none wearing masks. All the customers had been wearing masks and distancing, as well as the cashiers - but as the garage workers started wandering around right next to others with no masks on, some of the cashiers and even a couple customers started taking their masks off too. I felt uncomfortable about this but I couldn't leave since my car was on the lift, so I waited outside in the sweltering heat. After an hour of sitting outside, I started walking around the block to be doing something. I basically just kept walking around the block, being amazed every time I walked by the garage that my car was still on the lift with two wheels off and nobody working on it. I finally went inside to ask what was going on after 2 hours and they told me it would be another ten minutes. Ten minutes would go by, I would tell them that there is still nobody working on my car, and they would apologize and say it was almost done and would just be ten more minutes. In the end, the work they said would take between 60 and 90 minutes took three hours - three hours to change brakes, replace two tires, and change a gas cap. They also made the waiting area completely inhospitable by spreading the virus all over so I had to wait outside in the heat. Of course, in the end the gas cap was not the issue and my check engine light came on again. Even though I am wasting the $100 I spent on a diagnostic test at Pep Boys, I will bring my car somewhere else instead to get the issue fixed. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION! I would leave 0 stars if I could. This is my first time at Pep Boys. I saw some great deals on tires online, so I called the store and spoke with "Paul" to find out their availability for the day. He assured me that they were not busy and I can just walk in and be helped. The phone conversation was at 11 am, I arrived to the store around 12 pm. He was at first helpful in recommending tires, that were although more expensive, sounded like a better investment. I just needed 2 new tires to put into my front, and wanted to rotate the ones already in the front towards the back. Paul estimated 30-minutes for the service and told me it would be $235. As I am waiting, I am met by the mechanic who is "working" on my car and informed me that he could not find my tire locks. I wasn't too worried, because I usually leave it in my glove compartment which I saw were there a few days ago. However, upon checking I could not find my locks. I searched all around the trunk, middle compartment, under my seats, and was unsuccessful in finding my locks. I was frustrated and feeling suspicious because I've never taken the locks out and I remember it being there a few days ago. Granted that I am relying on my memory, I refrained from accusing any of the workers and agreed to them "breaking" my lock and charging me an extra $55 for labor costs. Still, I couldn't help shed this feeling that I was being taken advantage of. To make matters more complicated, their power went out, and the employees had no access to their computer systems. I was just blaming myself of having bad luck and stayed relatively "out of their ways." I do not like to add negative energy to people who are simply trying to do their jobs. But this is what really bothered me. I was silently waiting in the waiting area... trying to be courteous of their situation, but realized I've been waiting for 3 hours... just to get a simple tire change. I was being quite patient but began to lose my cool after accepting the fact that I was the only customer there... for the past 2 hours... and yet I am still waiting for my car. I asked Paul why it was taking so long, and he smirked while telling me its because they need to "break" my locks. Even if that was true, why would that take 3 hours? On top of that, he then tried to sell me a $39 lock set, without having access to a computer to check whether its the right fit for my tires, and briefly explained in difficult language that I can buy the recommended $39 lock or a cheaper one that is $8. I could've asked for better a explanation but I declined and was at my limit at that point. I just wanted to get out of there. So, finally at about 3:20 pm, after I finally "complained" that it was taking too long, Paul tells me my car is ready. I calmly asked how I can pay if their machines are down, and I need to pay by card. To which he directs me to the manager, who looks at me and says he can drive me over to a nearby ATM machine and I can withdraw cash. WHAT??! I was baffled. Another employee had mentioned to be prior to this that I can simply leave my phone number if I did not feel comfortable leaving my credit card information with them. When I confronted the manager and told him about this, he made a joke saying "oh I think he just wanted your number." WTF? I was frustrated, wanted to get the hell out, so I left them my card number with a verbal guarantee (which doesn't even mean much) stating they will properly dispose of that information after taking payment. And I left them my email so they can email me my receipt. I also asked if I can speak to the guy who changed my tires so I can look at the ones they took to make sure it was the correct one, to which I heard Paul suddenly speak in Spanish and I head the word "loca." I was the only customer there.. the only female. I am assuming he was calling me crazy. Seriously disgusting service and disgusting situation. This place was my savior today. After hitting a pothole going over the GW bridge at 1:30 AM this morning I had to pull over and get my car towed to Pep Boys. I spent the night at a nearby hotel and got here at 9:00 AM this morning when they opened. The had a tire that fit my car and after $177 and a 1 hour wait I was on my way back home to DC. NJ and NY really need to do something about all the potholes around the GW bridge. Its absolutely ridiculous. Tried to return a broken tool set and it was just opened the day before, I purchased it a different location which I highly recommend! This location was closer and all I had to do was switch for a new one. I had given her my receipt and she was arguing with me for 5 minutes about "why I went to this location" and "there is nothing wrong with it" when there was dents and scratches and the tool was locking. Avoid this Pep Boys no matter what. They are a bunch of scammers that take advantage of their customers. My car broken down on 95 and I had it towed to the shop. I called the next day and talked to 3 people before they could even locate my car on the lot and tell me anything about it. It needed a new alternator and battery. They told me it would be $1500. They knew I was 2 1/2 hours from home so they tried to rip me off. I told them that was outrageous and we were going to have it towed somewhere else to have the work done. They became agitated and told me I had to pay a "holding fee" before they would release the car to the tow truck driver. I refused and they let it go. This is the worst place ever. 3rd and last time here. NEVER AGAIN. I got here 9 am. Was told 2 cars ahead of me. They would look at my car in 20 minutes and I would be done in about an hour. My car was put in at 11:45 and all lies. They did nothing. Tried to tell me all my tires were dry rotted and cracked. There was a tiny paper staple in the side wall they said caused it to go flat. It didn't even go on far enough to cause a leak. The tires had been leaking since the originally mounted and installed them. They do shoddy work. Everyone there whole I was there who had their oil change was given a long list of "other " problems with their cars of things that needed to be done. All to make more money. Biggest crooks. Only reason i came here over the weekend was because i bought a car battery from them a year ago and it came with a 36 month warranty, car was not starting so i took it back to Pep Boys. They checked the battery and the battery was fine, so they determined that it was the alternator, without even really looking under the hood Total cost would come to 349 dollars! Luckily i was with my father and he said no because since it was not the battery we would take it to his mechanic. Car is at the mechanic and we find out the alternator is fine! I used the early drop off because I had work at 8 and the store wasn't open when I needed to drop my vehicle off. I got a call a little while later, which I thought was a fair amount of time, and I explained my issue; my ac wasn't blowing cold and I wanted to check for leaks. I was told that it was going to be just under the $200 mark because they were going to do the Deluxe AC service and I had a 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7L Sport and it uses "a lot" of R134a. The service only included 5oz of R134a, which almost no car takes. I explained that this was way too much money. I went during lunch to pick up the car, and explained to Paul that I need the car fixed for the summer and would like something done. He negotiated it down to $160ish+ tax and I had a 10% coupon, which he would honor. The reason I was trying to negotiate is 1. They were charging me for labor 2. They were charging me per oz of R134a, more than $3 per oz, when in your store, I could buy 12 oz for $14.99 and they were selling it to me for almost $50 for 12 oz. I mean come on; they are charging me for labor and 3X charging me for the R134a, which they buy in bulk. I told Paul that I don't want them to do all the work if it's leaking, so he said "Why don't you just check for leaks, and if it isn't leaking, we can do the service." He said that the full service included evacuating the R134a, filling the vehicle with R134a and 1oz (I think) of stop leak, and also 1oz of dye. I said to him that nobody even suggested that until now. I told him that I needed everything done by 4PM because that's when I get out of work. At around 3:30PM I called to check and he said that the vehicle was not leaking and they refilled it. He also said that it would be done in about 10 minutes. I arrived at 4:30PM and saw the tech working on the vehicle and stopped and asked him what was going on. He said that there were no leaks, so they just filled it with R134a. I asked him about the stop leak, and he said that they don't use it because it can clog the system and it doesn't work; they just use the dye and the R134a. I was mortified that I was being lied to by the service man, and charged for a product that isn't even being used.. and isn't used at all in the store. I went inside and spoke to Paul. I told him about the tech not using stop leak and he said "Well it's part of the package." I said, "It may be part of the package, but he didn't use it, so..." He then said that the coupon wasn't working because I didn't get anything repaired. He actually did manually take off about 10% as the coupon showed, but I could have easily gotten this done at the dealer for around this price, and knew what I was getting into from the get go. Paul ended up also taking off the $14.99 for the stop leak, and I paid just over $150 after all. Several of my friends and colleagues told me not to go to Pep Boys for this exact reason, and now I see why. This shop is really dishonest, unorganized, and disrespectful to the customers. read more

This was the only auto repair place within walking distance of my office, so I gave it a second shot. My previous experience had been acceptable. Today I waited on line for more than half an hour to drop my car off... and there were only 3 customers on line ahead of me. Literally 10 minutes for each customer... and only one guy behind the counter (with others milling about). They did a decent job on a simple repair on my car, and called when it was ready. That said, the line was simply unacceptable, price was a bit higher than other places, and I will not be back unless it's an emergency. read more

I should have taken the hint, but I decided to make an appointment for the next morning at 8AM. Wouldn't you know, I wasn't in the system despite receiving confirmation the night before. If you're a guy that doesn't own a luxury car, then you probably should be changing your own oil. It's pretty easy. Buy a pair of ramps, drive your car up the ramp, get a socket wrench, loosen the bolt at the bottom of the oil pan and let it collect in an appropriate receptacle. While the oil is draining, you swap out the oil filter (which is next to the oil pan) and you swap out your air and/or cabin filter. When the oil is sufficiently drained, replace the bolt and fill up your engine with the appropriate oil. The entire process will take less than 20 minutes and can save you anywhere from $10-$70. What's great about this Pep Boys is that they take your old oil and filter and they recycle it. It's not disposed of, it's re-purposed. All you have to do is sign a sheet and list how much oil you're dropping off. Make sure you scan their circular every week to stock up on motor oil and filters when they run specials. NEVER take your car here for any repairs. You should find a reliable mechanic for that. You can go here for new tires. But shop around and compare prices. Pep Boys will price match because they want your business. Don't buy the extended warranty unless you have a history of flat tires or having your tires slashed. DO take advantage of their rewards club. It's free and you're alerted to sales and given rebates via email or app. Get everything for less... read more

We own 2 import cars and they have had the parts in stock always and if I need them to do it, it is usually done quick. Victor and Kenny at the service desk know what you need and get it done. My husband took my truck here for an oil change today. The front headlight was also out, so he asked them to replace it. He dropped the truck off at 11am and picked it up around 8:30 pm. As he was driving the truck home, he noticed the front light was still out, so he went back and they told him that the previous owner of the truck had a "special" light installed. Mind you, this was AFTER he paid them for the parts and labor, and they made no mention of the fact that they didn't install it. My husband told them to put a regular light bulb in and watched as they struggled to get the cover off for 30 minutes, cursing and complaining that they were there late while doing it (except for the employees that were standing around eating pizza). Seeing that they were not going to get the cover off anytime soon, my husband asked for the money back for the bulb. They also failed to check the tire pressure and the windshield wiper fluid, which was empty. What a horribly incompetent and unprofessional company. I have full intentions of calling management and corporate when they open tomorrow. Complaining and cursing because you failed to do your job, as well as charging someone for it, is completely unacceptable along with the waste of my husband's time. read more

Pep Boys 65 Court St Hackensack, NJ Absolutely HORRIBLE service. Went there on a Thursday morning for some warranty service (valves tapping) and they said I will hear from them this afternoon. Didnt get a call or anything. I went by on That Friday afternoon and vehicle is sitting in the SAME spot. I asked what happened & the reply I got was "Tech had a problem with a prior repair and needed to resolve it" That should have been a clue for me to grab my vehicle and just leave. But I left it there and explained: 1) That's not MY problem 2) someone should have contacted me to let me know 1 & 1/2 days would be wasted. Nonetheless, Started with repairing the valves and ended up ordering valve springs and camshaft. (All under warranty). Once parts come in, they look further and notice bits of metal in the oil. Ends up I need a new engine. Contacted the warranty company and received authorization to replace the engine. But then the shop tried to get me (the customer) to pay for the valve springs & camshaft....SERIOUSLY?!?!? You guys were the ones who misdiagnosed the issue and not The customer has to pay for your blunder...?? Not gonna happen Then they tried to call the warranty company for reimbursement and they said "NOPE" Return the parts or ur stuck with them. Anyway, the engine was replaced. From there everything went to hell. They fix one thing, drive off and something else goes wrong. Engine is fine, but now electrical issues. That was resolved but now clunking noise and fluid leaking. They say they will call you back and never do. You have to call them for updates on YOUR vehicle. At one time their "Master Tech" overfilled the transmission pan causing fluid to leak out and burn off on the exhaust. Huge plumes of smoke on the highway because of THEIR mistake. Then I pay to have 1 hose replaced and they replace the wrong one!!!! Then try to tell me I have to pay to have the correct one replaced. Happend again. I went to get an alignment and I drove out and my car could barely accelerate past 30mph. I drove it to a private mechanic. He opened up the hood to find my hose disconnected and a sensor. He took pictures of it and sent it to my phone. He also showed me hand prints on top of my hood indicating prints. "They had no business going under your hood for an alignment" he said. That night, I went to the Hackensack Police to file a report for what I think should be considered criminal mischief. I insisted they take a report due to the fact ive had issues with them before and gave them another chance only to get compromised once again. This time I could have gotten seriously injured or killed. I reported it to regional management who said he would investigate but would not be able to tell me anything. These workers are treacherous psychopaths. BEWARE, do not take your car there. They hire crap who are too stupid and do obvious stuff to your car so you can come back and they can try to sell you something you don't need or they just like to mess certain kind of people up. I don't know but that was the last straw. If you take your car there and it comes out worse than it came in. I can guarantee you its foul play. This was the 3rd time for me and I'm out. These men are inexperienced, vindictive creeps trying to make a fast buck or just play around with your car for laughs. Whichever it is, it is something, now x3. Never again. Went in to get a headlight for my daughter's car. There was no cross ref chart to look up the proper year to get the proper part. When I asked if they had one the person said I don't know. I'm done with Pep Boys. read more
