I wish I could give more stars, 5 isn't enough to communicate my experience. Yesterday was the 4th of July & also the morning that my 4 Runner wouldn't start, but just gave a rapid clicking noise before giving up the struggle. I was praying it was the battery & not something more serious, which seemed confirmed when AAA sent a tow truck that gave us a jump (& then it started). I live in Kingsburg & with the holiday, the local mechanic was closed. 4 Runners typically keep things more complicated, so I knew I needed a more serious mechanic to replace the battery than going to the local auto parts store. Enter the Pep Boys. I called to make sure that they would be able to help me. I spoke to Vince, the manager. He told me to come over, but that they were starting to get busy, so I needed to be prepared to be there for a little while. I went straight over & they were indeed QUITE busy! Vince was AWESOME. Seriously. Like, I'm sure when he leaves work, he puts on his cape & mask & helps people in need. They had my battery in stock (huge blessing) & he told me that it could be a couple hours, but he was hoping for sooner. I took that opportunity to walk over to the Hobby Lobby across the parking lot. 45 minutes later, yes 45 MINUTES, I got the text that my vehicle was ready. Not only were they able to see me on NO notice, but I didn't even have time to enjoy their clean, cool, & very comfortable waiting room (filled with snacks & coffee), because I was still at the Lobby when they pinged me. Also, I'll be honest, I was expecting the pice tag to be at least $75 more than it was. The guys in the garage were friendly & respectful. All the people that I interacted with in the office were so helpful & kind. I have never worked with Pep Boys before, but I absolutely will again & can't recommend them enough. Horrible service. I took my vehicle in for an oil change, they called me and said they could not get the hood open so they refused service. When I came to pick up the vehicle, the cable was hanging and not even connected to the pull handle. Being that I was the last person to be under the hood, I KNOW FOR A FACT, the car was not like that when I took it in. When I asked to speak to the boss in charge he just continued to state there was nothing he could do and it wasn't their fault. Even if you couldn't get the hood open, you didn't have to continue to yank on the lever and rip the cable out of it completely and leave it hanging inside the car then tell me it's now my problem. They offered me nothing and don't want to help me once so ever. I worked there for 7 years 12 years ago, been a customer ever since I left, now I will never return and can tell why that store has gone downhill big time. Lost yet ANOTHER customer. Your typical Pep Boys. Love that I can drop my car off and walk home. My only real beef with this place is that no matter whether you make a reservation or not, your gonna be waiting awhile. This is why I'll make my reservation and walk home. They've been better about calling when my car is ready so this is nice and you can always find coupons for service online as well as ask for a military discount if you belong to that club. I came in may for free brake inspection I was told my back breaks were about a four witch I was told is like in orange did not need then but soon, I asked if they could wait until July (I would be in vaca in June) I was told they yes the quote I was given since I would be providing the break pads and they said I would need rotors. I was quoted $220.00 so I came in July I was told by different lady that I was miss quoted and the pads were $188. & rotors $188. I asked to have the quote I was given they said no only if they did the work when I was here in may. Then I call to check status I'm told oh this happens all the time what I said when they took off the back passenger breaks or rotors that parts of my e break fell off and pieces were missing and needs to be replaced now my bill at $468. And they would not realest my car unless I paid for replacements even though there was no warning signal on my car for maintenance or work and I use my e break every day . The bathrooms disgusting , then when I came to get my car manager not here and they offered me $50. Coupon that needs to be manually input so I'm now waiting. I went in October to have my brakes fixed because they were starting to squeak. After one week they began squeaking again so I took it in a week later and they told me it was cosmetic without putting it up and looking at it. I went back a month later they said the same thing. I went back two months later they blew me off. I called and they began hanging up on me. I almost got hit by a bus last month. The brakes went completely out and I was unable to stop at the red light by the DMV. I ended up on the wrong side of the road after the bus almost hit me. I got it back into the shop that day and they wanted to charge me another $1200 to fix just the back brakes and rotors. Which they charged me for in October. I wasn't going to pay for something again when it wasn't done in the first place. Once I got a trustworthy mechanic to do the job for me we realized the brakes were never even changed at all. Still had the factory brakes it came with in 2016. Like I suspected they never touched my car and took my $750. I do not recommend this place to anyone especially women because they will try to get over on you. Also when my mechanic got there to towe my car out they gave him the wrong key and they were jumping my perfectly fine vehicle. When I called and asked Darrel what kind of organizational system they use to not lose keys and ensure they stay w the correct vehicle he hung up on me. Highly unprofessional place. I wish I would've read all the other reviews because I would have NEVER taken my vehicle here. Now I know and please do not take your vehicle there especially if you have kids. Very unsafe. They're lucky my kids weren't in the car when I almost got hit or I would not be a nice person at all! Worst business I have ever given money to. I only put 1 star because it said I had to. I scheduled an oil change on line thinking that would assure a quicker service than just a walk-in. Got there on time. There was a long line of customers and only one counter open. I eventually talked to the clerk who was nice and professional. I asked how long it would roughly take. She said about an hour. I told her that's reasonable and I'll have lunch nearby while I wait. I had not heard from them after 1 1/2 hr, so I decided to check the progress thinking the car is probably almost done. I was very surprised when I saw they hadn't even started on my car! They told me they were really busy. Who knows how much longer before it was my car's turn?! Well, I'm obviously happy for them being busy but why have an appointment system and letting your customers know the car will be done in an hour. Went to the local store in Hanford for a regular oil change, as I have done in the past. This time was a total catastrophe. The person assigned to change the oil CROSS THREADED the plug when he tried to insert the plug. I was told "we are unable to change the oil". Tried to say it was my fault. Worst experience as always. I took my car here to have the spark plugs changed and ac checked, because I was pretty sure the Freon was so low it was causing pressure on the engine. So I tell Deryl this and off my car goes. I take off walking to see what time stores open and to go have breakfast at the black bear diner; which I highly recommend. As I realize I left my lighter in my car I go back and find both Daryl and Rafael pushing buttons trying to figure out how to view the miles on my 2012 Honda Civic. This should have been my clue that neither one knows what they're doing. I go eat and do a bit of shopping. I didn't have to wait long which wouldn't be a complaint because quality takes time, hence why this review is only one star. As I pick up my car he says everything is good. I'm like what about the ac. Do we need to have you recharge it or is something going out (I paid the $50 diagnostic). He says the guy put a little bit of Freon in it and added to dye to find leaks. Tells me I have to come back in a week to confirm. But it should be fine because there's a little bit of Freon in it now. He notices I'm annoyed by having to bring my car back and conforming that my $50 will be applied to the actual recharge if I decide to inconvenience myself and actually bring it back. Then says "well we didn't charge you for the dye" UHHMMMMM WRONG DARYL, I paid $50!!! Anywhooo..this place is not worth anything but to buy parts from. I wouldn't trust these guys with anything under my hood. And the fact that Daryl has worked for this company for 30 years proves that he knows how to RIP OFF WOMEN who come into a shop knowing exactly what's wrong and paying for half ass service. Sidenote: the dye in the ac notifies the tech pretty automatically if there is a leak. If no leak, you see no dye. There is no need to drive around for a week as Daryl stated, as this would cause most if not all the dye to be gone. My paperwork stated no leaks. I hope the manager of this business contacts me because I feel ripped off!!! Over $200 later my ac still isn't up to par and my idle is extremely high. I went to pep boys for oil change one evening and everything went just fine until i got home and hit this speed bump and crunched my whole skid plate up. when i uninstalled it, it obviously shows that it wasn't installed properly. i got to pep boys the next day and talked to the manager and he said they'll replace it no charge since they take the full blame for it. Day comes, skid plate they ordered came and they called me so I went and let them replace it. While doing so they called me back at the shop and said that i have to pay for this skid plate since manager said and i quote, "this incident wasn't one of my maintainers fault" and proceed to tell me that it was my fault and that he said, "i just don't like getting lied to" WELL obviously if i've been driving my car BEFORE the oil change or before any of your "maintainers" had to touch my car it was driving just fine, hitting speed bumps like it's nothing but when i told them as soon as i got home this happened it's still my fault? and i was accused of lying? that's Crazy. anyway, i told them that and for 3 minutes of talking they decided to just replace it free of charge which should be the deal on the first place and without all the attitude. read more

I have been using Pep Boys since the late 1980s as my experiences with the so-called best of the best in Fresno failed. Switching to them was not a long term plan in the beginning! It was a stop-gap for my business fleet cars. In 1999, I started using Pep Boys in Hanford for our two family vehicles. Two key reasons is an Assistant Service Manager Daryl, who has over 30-years with Pep Boys and is a massive diamond in the rough. The other is the long term Customer Service, Manager Wend, who I believe has 13+years with Pep Boys. One other long-term employee is working the Sales Counter who has always exemplified the best of quality service; she is Virginia. Without hey will be missed. In Daryl's service unit key, long-term employees, they are Raphael (a superb problem solver and mechanical investigative Mechanic). His staff also consists of Services Writers Darian and Brayan, who are very well qualified, valued additions to the team in the last few years. The mechanics are Victor, Ricardo, and Brad (I hope I got that right). High-recommend this auto service department as no problem is too hard, and I have brought them many over the years. The one-take away is this fact, between my fleet and personal vehicles, I was given the good, the bad, and ugly straight up. Hard to find. read more

Take your business elsewhere. I stopped in first thing on a Saturday, hoping to get my car in for a quick oil change. Without an appointment they asked me to leave it and come back around 1pm. I had too much work to leave it and wait. Luckily, I was able to schedule the first appt time of the day on the next morning. The next morning I waited outside the doors with 6 other folks trying to walk in for appts. And even though I had an appt, my oil change took 1.5 hours! They didn't rotate the tires like I expected, reporting they wouldn't do it bc my tread was low and the tires need to be replaced. They took 20 minutes to 'pull my car out to the front' before I asked where it was again. They said they needed to reset the computer's maintenance log and then took 15 more minutes to give me my keys. My car is not that complicated. Black grease was smeared on my white door and carpet. Luckily that came out with some scrubbing and they didn't soil my white leather. It was very obvious as soon as I opened my door. I was shocked to see that after making a mess they made no attempt to clean it. A month later now, I finally have more time and still think the tire treads look fine. I took it to another tire center I trust and was just told I have 15,000 more miles to go on this set of tires. Idk if this was a super off day, but I will not be returning to this garage and will make the drive to Fresno for my usual service center. read more

I scheduled an alignment ($90), after two hours the mechanic told me I needed new tie rods (because they were seized) and adjustable control arm bolts. And because of that they couldn't complete my alignment. The next day I took it to Les Schwab where their professionalism is unreal. They met me at my truck, and took me inside to get started. it was a flat tire emergency I'm now on a donut tire with 100 miles left to get home wife and kids in the car. we went to walmart first it was around 3:30 and the said they couldn't squeeze my 1 tire in (close at 6pm) I called around and pepboys and some other tire shops (one said 140$ to replace one tire!) Anyway Darian answered the phone professionally i explained what's going on. She genuinely showed empathy for my situation and set my tire aside for me as well. Thanks to Darian I was willing to pay 10$ more then a cheaper spot and drive a bit further. I ended up buying a jack and a lug wrench here while i waited. When I arrived at their facility they notified me that they couldn't complete an oil change because their oil canisters were full. No coupons were offered for their mistake, this is the worst customer service I have ever experienced at any auto service department. Went in for $1,240 worth of service including tires and brakes. I would give them a 5 for that. But then things went downhill and continued to be downhill. They were supposed to put my best tire in the vehicle for use as a spare. When I got home I noted that it was a 13" tire instead of the 15" I had on the vehicle. Five calls later the problem still exists - this has been 3 weeks! 4 of the 5 calls resulted in them promising to call me back but they never did. They did tell me they had which I went to pick up only to discover that it was a 17". How stupid can people be? All but one of the five people I contacted told me what I had to do to fix the problem. That is backwards - they made the problem and they should solve it. In addition they sold me tires with a C rating on heat resistance. In this semi-desert climate that is bad news. They should not even be selling that type of tire. Will I go back? Not very likely but I will have to go back to get the spare if they ever follow up. read more

Just got my car's first oil change and 30k check, didn't want to take it back to the dealership and pay 3x more than I would've paid here. Made an appointment and was taken care of in good time. Did have to wait for someone to show up though, there was no one at the registers. Asked what kind of oil I wanted (never been asked, always just dropped off the car!!), and wasn't made to feel stupid when I gave the "uh durr" look...synthetic. My car takes synthetic. I was told it'd be about an hour so my 2 year old and I walked to the nearby mall and killed some time there (no reason to sit on-site for that long!). As soon as my car was done I got an email telling me so, which was unexpected and super helpful! So we made our way back, they finished up the work order, and I got my car back. Wasn't forced to add extra services or hear that something else needed to be done, but they did suggest a fluid they didn't have on hand, I could get that and they'd take care of changing it (newer model). The bays were full of cars, the employees were all helpful, the service tech even put on my wiper blades I brought in, idk why all the bad reviews but my service today was great! I can understand the frustration if you're sitting in the claustrophobic waiting area, but if you have other stuff to do, definitely do that and save your sanity! I'll definitely be bringing my vehicle back here next time I need services, the price was decent and the wait wasn't too bad. read more

The worst part is that the part they ordered and installed was not the problem at all and I still had to pay for the labor and diagnosis. UPDATE 06/21/14: Paul called me after seeing my review. He told me that he didn't realize exactly how upset I was with Pep Boys. I was calm and civil with him, but he got noticeably irritated with me. I told him that his phone call was very inappropriate and that I didn't appreciate it (he later apologized for his tone and what he said). He apologized for making me think that my total was definitely going to be $400-$500 and asked if I would want to receive a refund to show how sorry he was. The next day, I picked up a refund of $200 from Pep Boys. I'm very grateful that I was refunded, but due to the confusion and drama that resulted from going to Pep Boys, I still plan to never return. I will never return to Pep Boys for any kind of service. When my truck broke down, I had it towed to Pep Boys. After they looked at it and ran some tests, Taylor called me and told me that there seemed to be two problems. He made it seem like one problem was worse than the other, so he recommended that they first fix the worst problem and then address the other. I was told that the repair(s) would not cost thousands of dollars. I spoke to a different man the next day (I don't remember his name) who didn't know that Taylor had already spoke with me, and he addressed the not-so-bad problem, but made it seem like it was the biggest problem... He actually didn't even mention the "big problem" that Taylor told me about. He told me that it would probably cost $3,000 to repair my truck. I remember him saying that he's pretty new and so is Taylor, so they wanted Paul to take a look at my truck. Paul gave me ANOTHER story. He basically told me that they didn't know what was wrong with my truck, so they wanted to try some things before charging me. I asked how much it was going to cost if their attempts worked, and he said $400-$500. I received a call a day or two later and was told that their repairs worked and that my total was $800+! I received a copy of the invoice and consulted multiple people who I personally know at a dealership/auto shop. They alerted me that I was being insanely overcharged (example: I was charged $100+ for a coil that really only costs ~$30). I, along with one of the persons that I consulted, spoke with Paul about the outrageous price. He ended up taking $100 off of the labor cost, but it was still ridiculous. I found several coupons for their services, and he told the person that I consulted with that I would be able to use multiple coupons. He seemed like he was going to let me use two, but then claimed that the "system wouldn't allow him to" (which was obviously a lie), so he only let me use one. I ended up paying $200-$300 more than I was originally told I would have to pay. My husband and I have also had oil changes done at Pep Boys, and they "alerted" us that there were things wrong with our vehicles. We were skeptical the first time, and when we sat in the waiting area the second time, we noticed that they told EVERYONE who was receiving an oil change that there was something wrong with their vehicles... I found it hard to believe that EVERYONE had something wrong with their vehicles, and figured they were fishing for money. Don't go to Pep Boys. read more
