Got a flat tire. Slow leak. As they were getting old, I had them replace all 4 tires. First off, I was told 1 hour to 90 minutes. Wound up being 3.5 hours. So pay for my tires and go home. Next morning on the way to work, my tire sensor light comes on. Nothing wrong with the tires. I call up, explain I was serviced just last night. "Come in, we will fix the problem." Check my car and say, "two of your TPS sensors broke $250 bucks to fix." Wait a minute. My sensors were fine yesterday when I came in to get tires. Now two sensors are broke eight hours later. Some COINCIDENCE there that TWO sensors went the very next day after they installed four new tires. Would not budge. 250 dollars. This place is dead to me. Absolute rip off and illegal in my honest opinion. Putting a whammy on them, and last time I put a whammy on someone, their mother died two days later. I hope this place goes bankrupt. You broke my &@&$ing sensors, you should have apologized and repaired/replaced. read more

If you give a crap about having a car after leaving this place, do NOT bring it for repairs. They literally broke my car and tried blaming it on the tow truck that brought it there. Charged 1100 dollars and gave me a broken car. Ridiculous!! It was not the two truck it was them and I know for a fact. My family called and called and complained until they gave us a full refund. At first they offered 200, then 400, then basically said "ok well give you a full refund but we don't think it's right. THATS NOT IT. They destroyed my dad's car too! Not sure the exact problem but he brought it in for something with his engine and once again charged a ridiculous amount of money for absolutely nothing. They literally didn't do a thing. They must have let the car sit there for a few days then decided it was time to call and say it was ready. Not only did we pay them for not a damn thing, he needed a new engine afterwards and payed 7000 for it when pep boys could have just fixed it since that's what he payed them for, right? When I first moved to this town, this store was the only auto parts place in town. Now they've got competition. But the same old problems remain, and I haven't forgotten the years of being treated poorly. First - only go there if you can buy something and walk out with it. Do NOT EVER let them touch your car. Even walking out with something may be hard, because the store is poorly stocked. They send out these great sales flyers, but they rarely have what's advertised. Would love to see the store section a little more organized. The service department is ok. The people can be helpful. Only problem is you have to wait 2 hours to get your 10 minute oil change. It just takes too long to get your car in there so I stopped using them for oil changes. I recently had a problem with a battery I purchased from them that they installed. When I called, they told me it was about a 45 minute wait. I needed to get it checked so I waited. 2 and a half hours!! That's just to get the car in there. Then they had to run electrical diagnostics to see if it really was the battery. That took about another hour or so. They couldn't find any problems with the car, so they replaced the battery. They didn't give me a hard time about it. It as still under warranty so I only had to pay for the installation. Fair enough, but waiting in this place can make you get old fast!! read more

The case on my car keys broke and so I went to Pep Boys to buy another one. They did not have it but Tom in the parts department looked online and showed me which one to order. He even offered to replace it for me once it arrived. I returned after the part came and Tom replaced it for me at no charge. read more

First of all....if anyone understands the psychology of reviews and a company like Yelp....then most people tend to leave bad experiences vs good experiences. Having your car fixed tends to be an anxious experience. It most always leads to spending money so a lot of auto repair businesses have it tough in this review driven world. Mark Hill (one of the lead mechanics here) is the most trustworthy guy ever. I only bring my vehicles when he's there. Most big businesses have lots of employees. Not every employee is going to be happy go lucky and 100% ethical. Mark is extremely honest, polite, patient, and very intelligent when it comes to cars. If you find yourself in this store and Mark is working...you should ask for him. He is one in a million and I will always refer to him for his knowledge and expertise. read more

Brought my car in for an oil change. I was told that it would take about 1 hour. It took nearly two hours before my simple oil change was done. No one came out to update me on the delay. I was in a waiting room and had a coffee pot which was empty, uncomfortable chairs, and a TV that was broken. Won't be coming back here for service on my car. read more

Today I went into Pep Boys on U.S. 9 in Howell and let me just say that these guys are awesome. Specifically the one guy Tony, he was really caring helpful. I have had many expensive purchases in the Howell NJ pep Boys and on this particular time I had 4 tires put on my Lincoln MKX after doing a wheel bearing hub and numerous other front end parts before I sent it back to do the AWD wheel alignment. I purposely did the tires and front end work on the vehicle before I sent it in for the wheel alignment knowing that they had to do them so the new tires wouldn't get ruined and after the rear wheel hub was done. fast forward 5 months and 12000 miles later I go to rotate the tires, a little late but I go to rotate the tires and they are bald on the insides of the rear tires and the wheels were off by 5 degree swing in the rear which tells me that the rear wheel alignment was never touched. You clearly can see the bolts were not taken off. I contacted the service manager by the name of Tony who was wonderful, took the vehicle in right away and resolved the problem. He also put two new tires on the vehicle as a result of the lack of not doing the job right in the first place. For the record, Tony was not the one who worked on the vehicle. Tony was stand up and professional and got me back up and running for my 17 yr old new driver to drive a safe vehicle. To be fair, i rated only three stars only because it should have been done right the first time. I want to give a shot out to Tony ''service manager'' in Pep boys Howell NJ. Thank you sir !!! Update: The exhaust system was reattached without replacing the gaskets and 2 sensors were not hooked back up, doh! I was then informed by the manager that when removing the old gaskets, the exhaust manifold was damaged and would need to be ground smooth and factory gaskets would have to be ordered. So, another 2 hour trip next weekend. They have promised to refund 10% of the bill upon completion, which is a good gesture from the manager, but overall a bad experience. read more

Do not bother doing any business here. Had a brake job at this location, and with it a so called "check points" on vehicles condition. Yeah, right, I had a DEAD battery the following week. I guess I got the NOVICE service technician. Thanks AAA. Additional work repair charges amounted to work that could not be completed or repaired properly by them. Tried to discuss matter with a very Unprofessional manager which led to no resolution. Person was rude and lacked and sense of knowing how to deal with a customer. At best they hope you go away. PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU TAKE YOUR CAR HERE!!!! So I brought my car in with 4 brand new tires that I wanted replaced. I had my spare tire(brand new) that was on the car so I asked them to mount balance and aligned the 4 new tires and put my spare in the trunk. I reiterated that numerous times to "Lee" ( said he was the manager) he said no problem. They said it'll take 3 hours. They called me when it was ready, I paid, asked them again if they put my spare in the trunks they said yes. As I'm about to leave, I check the trunk, THEY LIED!, there was a bald, basically flat tire with wires hanging out for a spare in there! I was so upset, "Lee" was on the phone for next 45 minutes, leaving me waiting(had to close MY business and refund customers money for me not being there) and they tell me that they have my real spare tire but it has been slashed an damaged by them! They had no tire to replace that day, I asked for a refund and they said no chance! I called customer relations EVERYDAY FOR last week or so and was told an Area manager, regional manager, and VP will call me back and NO ONE DID! The day I left pep boys I've had car problems. So if they lie about a tire, what else are they liars about. Driving by through town on the way back to Freehold decided to call up and save a trip maybe they might have it. I just install LED tail lights they're flashing to quickly so I want to get an upgrade flasher. I called up young guy answers I tell him do you have the heavy duty flashers for a 2005 Ram he says we have the heavy-duty ones in the aisle hanging up Universal flashers you have to come in with the old one and size it up. I said okay do you have regular flashers for 2005 rim he checks and he says no we don't have it for your specific truck only for other vehicles. he knew what I was going to ask to find one in stock and possibly look in the aisle for the match. Smelled like a BS story, and said no we don't have it for yours just for other vehicles. that extra mile and customer service does not exist in this store, it's too bad I'm glad there's an advanced auto parts brand new on Route 9 in Freehold by my house I'm on my way there right now. I was in the neighborhood up here because I go to my regular auto parts store which is AutoZone in Lakewood that I don't have in Freehold and I go out of my way because I'm loyal to them and their prices and their customer service they didn't have it and they said that they could order it but I need it now so I had to pass it up. read more

A bad experience that was turned around. I had an appt. on Sat morning before I had to be at work. I usually go to the Pep Boys in Brick and didn't realize I had the appt. scheduled in Howell. I went to Brick, found out the mistake and zoomed to Howell. I was agitated because I was going to be late for work. My husband called to let them know what happened and that we were on our way. When I arrived, I stood in line (the only person in line with one person being taken care of in front of me) for 10 minutes. The service person then took care of another customer from the lounge, all this time never acknowledging my presence. I was now even later for work and left. My husband waited to cancel the appt. When I got off work, I called to speak to the store manager, Dave. He was amazing. With his help, I got my tires and alignment. I received a call back from Zane, the service manager, who was personally waiting for us when we arrived back. I car was done quickly and drives beautifully now. It sucks that I had to complain to get good service I should have gotten in the first place but once Dave became involved, he was a great manager and handled everything extremely professionally. read more

On Friday Sept. 11, I took my 2006 Nissan Altima 2.5s into this Pep Boys in Howell. I am the original owner of the car and other than oil changes, tranny flush and fill and radiator flush and fill and rotate my tires, brakes and rotors, I've never done any service to my car. Last Thursday it began to bogg down upon acceleration and the "check engine" light began to blink. Mind you the light has been on from 80,000 miles and I'm currently at 270,000 and just never had the catalytic converter replaced so I thought perhaps it was now causing a more serious issue. Not so... The light began to blink because I needed a tuneup..and one of the coils was bad.. So I get a call the next day from Pep Boys explaining the reason for the misfire, also that I have a bad cat and also that my fuel pump gas gauge is bad but the fuel pump is fine.. It was recommended to do the tuneup and replace the coil. I asked about the fuel pump gauge, I was told it is not necessary at this time.. What about the Cat.. She said iti is not causing a drivable issue so leave it alone until.... Unless I wanted to spend the $$ to fix it.. Never once was I attempted to be upsold from Pep Boys.. They had the car done ahead of the estimated time by 24 hours too. Thanks guys and I will recommend your shop to my friends too.. For all the negative reviews, perhaps keep an open mind when you ask someone tp perform a service on your vehicle... After all they do know more about your car then you do, otherwise why go there... Not everyone is looking to rip you off. As a side note here, the service manager gave me a quote to replace my bad catalytic converter. Rounded up it would cost me roughly $700.00 out the door. Lied to my face about a bill and what was repaired (did unnecessary repair and then had to have the REAL problem fixed elsewhere) and when I called him on it, CONT his charade of lying, even though by this point he just seemed ridiculous. I had this store perform a simple tire installation. They messed up installation of one of my tires and my tire was leaking. I was forced to put on my spare tire. Then the service advisor scheduled me for a repair on a day when the TPMS tire mechanic was off. I took time off of work for no reason. I won't ever come back to this store since they couldn't perform such a simple task correctly the first time, and the service advisor didn't bother to look at the mechanic's schedule before scheduling my repair. read more

Dropped off car by appointment before store opened. Around 1pm they called with an estimate and I told them to proceed. They said should take a couple hours. I called 1.5 hrs later and they said they installed AC motor and were waiting for transister. I called 2 hours later and they said the transister melted the switch and other components and they would need to order parts from dealership. I told them I needed my car for work the next day. She originally said my dash was in pieces so might not be able to then she said come back 5 min to close and see and I'll schedule time to finish job. They should have kept me in the loop the hole time but I followed up with them. They should have looked at the melted switches and told me at the start they couldn't finish the job. I was having some issues with my car so I dropped it off last week to get an estimate for an alignment and new breaks. When I dropped my car off my door handle was working properly and had no prior issues. The next day I went to get my car & when I parked my car I noticed I was not able to get out because my door handle was broken. I called the store right away and explained the situation to the manager, I believe his name was Tony, who told me to bring the car in and they will take a look at it. When I brought my car in I was frustrated because I had to make another trip & go another day without a car. Even though I was a little annoyed because I thought I was going to have to go another day without my car & pay X amount of dollars to get it fixed because he wouldn't believe me that the door handle wasn't broken prior to the drop off. BUT I was wrong. The manager was very patient and extremely helpful. He apologized to me and he even fit me in the schedule and fix my door handle within two hours. He also took responsible for my door handle getting damaged while it was in the shop and fixed it free of charge.Not all shops are like this & not all shops will take your word. The manager here is VERY FAIR & if you ever have an issue, ask for Tony ! He is the best. read more

Service at this location not good. I was given 15% off for getting a charge that day , then they said I couldnor have the 10 dollars off an alignment that I was previously promised. Mind you the bill was over 700, but they still insisted on cheating me out of this 10 dollare. I was talked down to and given a lot of static when I said the 989 quote was too high , and that some services would have to be eliminated . Everytime I asked a question , I was told by the service manager (?)--- there is no question here , you will find that I am really good at math ( !) I wasn't particularly impressed with his math skills but we do get better with what we practice often, and his speciality seems to be jacking up the bill, and trying to embarrass you into not questioning the total stingy with discounts that he could offer , but refuse to, or worse , as was done with me, discounts promised then taken away. Yeah it was only ten bucks but I had to haggle very hard to get a barely reasonable price here. Manager is interested in taking advantage of you and closing you high andbullying you into not asking questions. Treatment here is bad, and they talk down to, and try to take advantage of women. I also made an appointment but was told there were 5 or 6 ppl ahead of me and that the service would take all day. Beware and stay away !!! read more

I will not be going back to "the boys"! I had a 10:30am appointment for an oil change. I was not a walk in & had made my appointment over the phone days in advance with a service person and not on line.I waited in their waiting room for over an hour and my car was not even touched. They said they had another 10:30 appointment that was made on line , They said had you come 10 min sooner (I was on time for my appointment) then you would have been first. The other person was not there for an oil change. Bottom line is that there should not be appointments scheduled for the same time unless they have the staff available for the service. read more

After 2 and a half hours of waiting for my tires to be changed, they ended up putting my tires on backwards AND in the wrong position. So I had to drive all the way back there and wait another hour and a half for them to fix it. They seem to have untrained teenagers working as mechanics. Worst place I have ever been. I gave them my car for an oil change and they told me that two cars were in front of mine. It was supposedly a one hour wait. After I had waited for an hour and a half I walked up and asked about my car. Their incompetent employee told me that two cars were in front of me and that it would be another hour wait. That blew my mine, what great service. I took my car to real mechanic like I should have in the first place. Do yourself a favor and don't let them touch your cars I personally will never step into another pep boys again read more

Do not go here! I recently got a nail in my tire. I brought my car here to see if they could patch/plug it for me. They told me it would take an hour and to leave my car there. After over 2 hours they finally called me to tell me it is not in their policy to repair tires! The guy who took my car never mentioned this. The person who called me told me that I would need to replace all 4 of my tires because I have all wheel drive. Keep in mind my car is only 4 months old!! I asked if there was anyway it could be repaired and he said he had no idea he didn't even look at it. I ended up taking the car to the manufacturer and they took the nail out free of charge. It turns out it didn't puncture the tire internally. What would have cost me the price of 4 tires at this Pep Boys..... I got fixed FOR FREE! They are such a scam. read more

PLEASE READ BEFORE BRINGING YOUR FOREIGN CAR HERE So I have had my first car (2006 Volkswagen Beetle) since I was 17 and was blessed to have an amazing warranty that lasted through the previous owner to me so that for years and thousands of miles I could go to the dealership to get my car serviced for free/ at a discounted rate. Once the warranty was expired I decided to be fiscal and go somewhere other than the dealership. By recommendation of my father, I went to the Howell pep boys to initially get a coolant problem resolved and a headlight replaced. They wound up replacing the water pump since it was broken, and never topping off my coolant after they fixed the leak . Ok, this is not that big of a deal, I just thought that they may consider being courteous or something because it's kind of essential from my understanding to have at least a little antifreeze so your car functions ok. Nonetheless, I drive off. The next day, i realize that my headlight which I paid for was still (or may have blew) out. Also, my car started making noises that I never heard before dropping it off initially. I went back in to tell them and they question me on it. Why would I make something like this up? After an unnecessary amount of communication, they finally take it out for a ride, decide to drill a loose flap up (meaning just drilling a hole into part of the car that wasn't already there), and replace the correct (right) headlight. Relieved, I shoot back up to my college, ready to enjoy the rest of my winter break. Note: The reason why I didn't replace the headlight myself is because it's a bit more complicated in my car since you have to take the entire mounted piece out and it requires me to even open the hood. The next day, I walk outside, and my entire light is GONE. . . like, for a second I thought someone stole it. Extremely frustrated, I planned to drive it back to Howell. At this point I decided to get other views on it (not the dealership... yet) but from other mechanics who specialized in VWs and after they looked at it, they said it was most likely not latched in entirely after replacement because pep boys probably ripped the entire system out along with some of the latches, since many do not know unless they are very knowledgeable about VWs that they need to be a little more delicate and the process is a little more difficult. Unfortunately, they could not help me for a whole week so I sucked it up and went back to the dealership, who said the same thing. Not only did I have to buy an entirely new headlight but the mounting itself was broken and they had to order that for me along with a few missing clips. I saved money with the headlight by buying it online, but in addition to my receipts at pep boys, today when I picked up my car I had to pay an additional $450. As a college student, this has taken more time and money up so much so that I didn't even want to take the time and tell them (pep boys) what happened. I not only have a bad experience with this place, but they are now responsible for the huge lack of trust I have for franchise auto bodies like Pep Boys that are supposed to be cheaper and more efficient than a visit to the dealership since this was my first time doing this. I assumed that they were knowledgeable and had integrity in their job... I assumed that when people do not know how to do something that they would research up on it and find out instead of just guess, which seems to have happened here. Thanks to them, I now understand the importance of finding and having a trustworthy mechanic and am one step backwards in finding one. read more

I should have done this a lot sooner. We brought our minivan here in hopes to have the AC repaired (It did not hold a charge). The vehicle was 2 years old, so the AC should not show any issues at that time but that's another story. The diagnosis, repair and refill came to $524.57. One hot summer day later and the vehicle is back at the shop because it did not even blow cold for 24 hours. Their mechanic explained that if they fix one area, another area could start leaking....ok we are not completely un-mechanical, but let's go with that for now. They quoted us another $1,200 to get it fixed. However, mentioned that they cannot guarantee that their fixes will work to get this fixed. Ok, second time we feel bamboozled, but nothing we can prove. The other service rep mentioned that replacing the whole system usually cost over $3,000. So that's what they wanted us to pay? We ended up not getting it fixed at Pep Boys. Since this was the second place that offered no solution but high prices we ended up not getting it repaired until this year. We did not trust other mechanics since we don't seem to have luck with anyone here. In the mean time we complained to the store that this is unacceptable...no solution. I wrote corporate to request my money back....no reply mail. We tried another place at the mall (not sure if I should be naming this place since I don't want to jinx myself again, but anyone that knows the area can figure this out). Anyways, they claim they added the dye to diagnose it and filled it with freon. We ended up only paying for the fill and not the diagnosis since they said they did not see a leak! My husband and I just looked at each other and asked them if they are sure?!?....Anyways, 2 weeks later and the AC is still ice cold. There must have been an angel working at the other place and tightened something up because it wouldn't even hold a charge when we did ourselves. After "trying out" 5-6 repair facilities in the area, we finally found honest people again. What a blessing! It's a shame because we bought parts there before and usually I don't give any bad reviews, I just don't go there anymore, but this was just too blunt after all! read more
