I have gone to Pep Boys instead of my Kia dealership service garage for about a year now and I am very happy with their service. I've gone there to have my yearly inspection done, I went there when I got a flat tire, I've gone there to have my oil changed and every time I go it's quick efficient and I'm not spending thousands of dollars on repairs. I don't need. I do not feel any pressure to get any thing fixed with my car that probably doesn't need it. I go at least twice a year for a regular maintenance and when I get my inspection it's quick and I pay for the inspection and go. I just recently had my inspection and my brakes done and I was on my way in less than an hour and a half. I'm always expecting to spend two or three hours because that has been my experience in the past. But now, the last year that I've been going to Pep Boys, I haven't spent more than a couple hours. The longest time I've spent there was because my car was towed in last minute for the flat tire, which is to be expected because people with appointments are taken care of first. I had no problem waiting because I didn't want to cut in line. The Pep Boys in Lake Grove is great and I will continue to go there Oh, and I also should mention that I got a flat tire years ago in a different town and that Pep Boys was just as wonderful. When I thought I was gonna have to get a new tire, they just fixed my tire and I spent 15 bucks. Pep Boys is great and I will continue to bring my car there. read more

Hmm.. One star and I'm being generous. A few weeks ago, I dropped off my Tesla for a New York State inspection. I brought the car here two years ago and it passed with no problems. A Tesla should be an easy inspection, there's no engine to check! My wife & I walk to Smithhaven Mall, we window shop, all is right with the world. I walk in and I'm told the car failed inspection. What?! Yes sir, the tint on your windows is not up to code. Wait a second, you passed the car last year?? Yes sir, someone made a mistake and I don't want any problems. You'll have to take it back to your tint shop, let them put a lighter shade of tint that will pass New York State Ins.. I ran outside to the car and ripped off all the tint on the side windows. I went back to the desk with a huge tint ball. Now the car will pass! Idiots. Never again. read more

Honest and Fair, But Communication Needs Work I had a mostly great experience with Pep Boys and want to give credit where it's due. I came to them after being quoted over $3,000 by Competition Subaru's service department for a long list of repairs--four rotors, tires, brake pads, wipers--you name it. This didn't make sense, especially since I've only had my car for under two years and driven just 12,000 miles. So I went to Pep Boys for a second opinion. I didn't tell them anything upfront because I wanted a truly unbiased inspection. And I was really impressed--they were completely honest and transparent. The only issues they found were the brake pads and rotors, which they fixed for under $1,000. No upselling, no pressure, and they explained everything clearly. I genuinely felt like they were looking out for me, not just trying to make a sale. That said, I do have one big complaint. I made an appointment for 9:30 AM, but had to call multiple times just to find out if the inspection had even been done. In the end, I didn't get my car back for over 24 hours--which is super frustrating, especially when you make an appointment specifically to avoid that kind of delay. So overall, I'm really thankful for their honesty and the money they saved me--but I hope they improve their communication and scheduling process. Called and made an appointment to get my vehicle state inspection completed. I showed up they said it would be 45 minutes. After an hour i looked at the text tracking link they sent me and a technician wasn't even assigned yet. I asked the gentleman at the counter for an update and he was rather unprofessional telling me the "machine" hasn't passed our vehicles yet. However the gentleman with the appointment time after me got his inspection and an oil change done before me. Overall they don't follow their appointment schedule and plan on at least 90 - 120 minutes to get a state inspection completed. read more

Some background. I'm from California and a couple years ago I got a certified used car here in NY. Today I got pulled over for the first time because my vehicle inspection expired and my windows are a little dark (they were tinted when I bought the car). I didn't know what that was cuz we don't have that in CA. Went fine and came here to get it inspected Service: lousy Staff: rude I brought in my car for inspection and when I picked it up, it failed cuz of the window tints. I ask how much it would be to untint the windows and the guy is like "mmm it's like a whole process and it's really tough. It takes an hour for each window and you gotta manually scrape off all the glue. It's gonna be about $310". $310?!?! Thank god a customer next to me was like "nah nah nah. You can do it yourself with a razor and windex. It's easy. It's NOT a $300 job". The pep boys employee says "yeah... i mean you can. But you'll scratch your window and have glue everywhere." I go with the customer guy's advice (thank him profusely) and go home to try it. We scrape the corner a bit to get a the peel going. The tints come off IN ONE PULL IN 5 SECONDS with no glue residue. Pep boys trying to charge me $300 for something that would take them "2 hours" to do that I did in 10 seconds total. I come back within 10 min for reinspection just for the window tints and they take half an hour. Just look at the windows, give me my forms, and let me go on my way. They still just HAD to ask me if I wanted to sign up for a pep boys credit card so I don't have to pay the inspection fee or whatever next time. No f ing way TLDR: take your money and time elsewhere. Today I had my car serviced at the Lake Grove location as I noticed the wheel would slightly shake when braking from high speeds. The mechanic gave me a detailed written estimate that stated the right rear caliper needed to be replaced and that it was leaking brake fluid. I was assured from the front desk receptionist that this was the cause of my wheel shaking while I'm braking. After the service is done, I drove the car to an interview and noticed on the highway the brakes aren't very responsive and I have to press down completely for the car to start slowing down and ultimately brake. This is quite concerning and scary as this is risking my life as well as others not having brakes that are function properly. Prior to this service my brakes were responsive, the wheel would just shake to a certain extent when braking from high speeds. I returned back to the original Pepboys location and they give me another invoice to repair the car. I then inquire as to why this other "issue" was not mentioned earlier and why they are unsure of the true cause of the brakes having such a low reaction time and having to be pressed down fully. The poor performance of my brakes appeared after they did the listed repairs on the invoice. The associate is unable to give me a proper answer and tells me I can simply call tomorrow and speak to a manager. They wanted to charge me another $600 to supposedly fix my brakes. read more

One star is too good for this location; Do not go to this location if you want a pleasant experience. Waiting area is hot, dirty, dusty and bug ridden with rat traps everywhere, no amenities (not even a vending machine). They suggest you do not wait for simple issues; which is a red flag. The mechanics take smoke breaks every 10 minutes which probably explains the long wait (prepare for second hand smoke if you're not a smoker). You will be waiting hours regardless, for a place that is seemingly empty. They will destroy your car and then expect you to pay for it after they cover it up. TO make matters worse they seemed amused at my frustration to their botched work and refused to fix the issue without an excessive bill. From my research they are partaking in Every scam in the book. This place needs to be shut down in its entirety not only the retail area. God forbid you have an issue there is no useful managers around and customer service can not do anything other than send emails to people who respond when they want to. Pep boys does not care about their customers. Do not waste your time I came in with a $300 issue and left with a $2k issue that they ultimately tried to cover up. Disgusting place with unprofessional, arrogant and greasy employees especially that Carl who does not care about his integrity or his weight. Along with his minion Tom who could barely see or speak in a professional tone. There is no protection for customers going into this place because they will smile in your face and deny any wrongdoing even when it is obvious they're at fault. Their lack of integrity and honesty is most disturbing. Additionally, they will not let you purchase your own parts; they want to supply the parts so they can add an additional $500-$1000 to your invoice for parts that cost less than half of that amount. Never again will I deal with any Pep Boys location after this. Their slogan is "Quick & Quality service" and they have showed none of that. After an hour, I was told it would be another hour. I sat in the freezing waiting room for two hours. Tonight on my way home from work, I realized my inspection was up in a day. I tried to go to a Pep Boys closet to home and was turned away. I drove to this location in Lake Grove and arrived about 7:15 pm. The gentleman Micky helped 2 people in front of me. The wait was very minimal. Micky was friendly and did everything he could to try to help me. There were 3 cars in front of me, but after speaking to the inspector he agreed to squeeze me in. They were fast and efficient and the entire staff was pleasant. All of the closing staff had just gotten yelled at by an extremely Cranky woman who had no respect for any of the employees and was incredibly rude. Even after their difficult interaction with her, they were all friendly and even told me some jokes as I was checking out. The staff really made an impact on me and I will absolutely be referring people to this location instead of the other location I normally visit. This set of employees really made my night! I made a 2:pm appointment for a battery change. After one hour of waiting and seeing my car where I parked it, I went to the desk to complain. I found out my paperwork was never sent into the shop to have my battery installed. After waiting for another hour I walked outside and saw my car had been moved. Again I went up to the desk and was told my car was done. Nobody came to tell me. I'm sure it was done out of spite because I complained. Unfortunately I booked the appointment and paid online in advance. Mistake I believe. My brother told me to cancel my appointment when I told him where I was going. He said I would be very unhappy there, and that I should go to AutoZone in Hauppauge which was much closer to my house. Stay away from Pep Boys !! They are bad news and the waiting area is nasty. I purchased tires through Tire Rack and arranged for installation here. First, I was quoted $78 plus tax online, it ended up being $115 because of hidden charges. Second, I took the first available appointment at 10:30, I was told the guy wouldn't even be in before 11. I was promised a finished car at 1pm, it was ready at 4:30pm. Third, according to the guy at the register I had to pay for 4 new tire valves but guess what - they only installed one and installed the three old ones. They also didn't bother putting the valve stem covers on. Fourth, they didn't inflate my tires correctly. Each tire was different and they were all under inflated according to both the vehicle and tire manufacturer requirements. Tried to pull a fast one on my slow car! Two years ago I came here to get my alignment fixed. When I picked the car up they told me the work was done. I paid and was on my merry way. The moment I got back onto Rte 347 I knew they didn't do a damn thing. I went back and spoke to the manager. He called in the mechanic who "worked" on my car. The Service Manager, Dominick, was very pleasant to deal with and courteous, and answered my questions about an air conditioning repair I was looking into for another vehicle I own. I have never had a bad experience here, actually, and never have had to worry about "mystery" diagnoses from this place. In fact, I brought my car in a month or so ago with what I thought was a need for brakes, and Dominick told me honestly that I still had a lot of pad left and sent me on my way. This Pepboys had a fairly decent selection as far as alloy wheels and hubcaps go. Regardless this is big shout out to Brandon! Quite possibly the best sales associate I've ever met! Despite being rudely greeted by the customer before me he kept his composure and nonetheless, proceeded to perform his job to the best of his ability. He helped me find the exact car mats I was hoping to buy for my new Accord, while providing alternative recommendations. We had a great banter back and forth about car parts and accessories. These place is a total scam. While attempting to address "abs warning light" they broke a tpms sensor. I alerted the "management" the same moment I turned the car on that there was now a "tire pressure light" on. I told him that light wasn't there when I bought the car in. He denied it. I decided to call corporate, filed a complaint. They said manager would call me in 24 hours. Didn't happen. I called corporate again, they said a district manager would call. Didn't happen. I called corporate again, and was hung up on THREE times. Just took the car to the dealership, they told me the tpms sensor was broken while pep boys "techs" worked on the brake system. Ridiculous. This place is an absolute disgrace. If I could give them zero stars I would. Brought my car in for an oil change hoping they would do their jobs, unfortunately i drove away without checking under the hood. They did not even put in new oil after they drained it and left my oil cap off. My car broke down and had to be towed back to the shop. At the shop they then proceeded to lie to my face about what happened after I already had checked the dipstick and saw they didn't put in new oil or put the cap back onto my vehicle. They spewed me lies about "mix ups" and video evidence they had but when I asked to see the video, it was suddenly a problem. Unbelievable will NEVER be going back again. To give you some context, I consult Yelp reviews very regularly and have positively reviewed several establishments when significantly impressed. However, I have never been compelled to write a negative review until now. I was on Long Island visiting for the weekend several weeks ago and went to Pep Boys in Smithtown because my engine was suddenly sputtering and stalling. Got there in the morning and left my vehicle there, explaining that I needed to drive home that night because I had to work the next day. They correctly diagnosed the problem and told me that they would fix it. I asked for a tune up and oil change as well. I spoke with them several times that day to confirm what was being done, what it would cost and that it would be completed before closing. The overall cost was significant but, especially as a parent, it's important to me to drive a safe vehicle. In the afternoon Pep Boys told me that they had a problem with the replacement part and coincidentally they felt that I no longer had the diagnosed problem so they would just proceed with the oil change and tune up. After my car was there for seven hours I went to pick it up and was told they just did the oil change. I asked about the original problem, tune up and, while they had the plugs all lined up on the counter to do it, they told me that they forgot that part. I asked to speak to Steven who I had been speaking with all day to express my disappointment and was told that he would call me. I asked Pep Boys if they were sure that the sputtering and stalling was fixed as I needed to get on the road to drive home and they assured me that my vehicle had been fixed and was safe. My car sputtered and stalled as I was driving away and I called back to ask again for Steven and he still hasn't called me back. It was now evening and I was now stuck on Long Island with no way to safely drive home with my child. By now all places were closed. I had to drive to another service station, leave my car and keys in the drop box there and take a train home. I was unable to return to Long Island for two weeks and was without my vehicle the entire time. The other service station diagnosed the same original problem and successfully fixed it. read more
