I love going to pep boys. I've never had a bad experience with them and i have been to stores across the United States. I always get fair prices and they've actually taught me a lot about what to look for on cars. This location helped a lot as I had gotten an oil change at Walmart and they cracked my oil pan but didn't want to take the blame for it so instead I just came here. They were super quick about it and while I waited the manager helped me find some other things I needed while I was there. If you go in just ask for Gino and he'll make sure to help you with whatever you need. Prices are I think company ran so unfortunately I know people say they are expensive but I'd rather go here than Walmart again. read more

When I went inside to change my tire, the rude guy in the service department saw my flat tire, insulted me, and told me to "get out of here." I woke up and had the wonderful gift of a flat tire waiting for me when I was leaving for work. since that always makes my life stressful, I was not a happy girl. since, for some weird reason, my 1.5 year old car didn't have a spare (wtf??) I had to have my car towed to get serviced and I decided pep boys was a safe bet. always had good luck. but this time, since I was at a clients home (long story) I went to a different pep boys. I was prepared to spend at least $200 for the tire (and possibly $ if I needed all 4 replaced), which isn't always fun, but I was prepared. a couple hours later (which was a shock! - in a good way) and $30 later, I was on my way out of pep boys. my tire was fixed and the other three checked (no issues). I was done! and so happy!! the pep boys in port Jeff station, NY on nesconset highway was great! This morning i woke up to a flat. In a panic as my husband is having open heart surgery and wanting to go see him before he went under the knife, i had gone to 2 other tire places before sopping in here. Both of the tire places were not only rude, but totally unsympathetic to my situation. I have a gadget that puts air in the tire and used it to put enough in to get somewhere to get it fixed. After City Tire and Mavis both failed me, i pass Pep Boys and give them a shot. There were people waiting, and I was not hopeful but I explain my situation to the mechanic at the desk. Totally sympathetic to my needs, he grabs my keys and pulls my car right in. Found the problem, fixed it and i was out of there in 15 min! Handed me the keys and said, go see your husband!!!!! THIS is customer service!!!!! I wish i got his name, he will never truly know how grateful i am for his consideration and pep boys better hang on to him. When I questioned why it was taking so long the guy told me that's how long oil changes take (uh, no) and then compared it to going to the doctor when I said I just would have appreciated a heads up when I arrived on time that they were running late. I did witness this with my own eyes and I'm still not sure how it happened but once I was at the counter waiting for my car and a customer was losing her mind. Why?? Because THEY GAVE HER KEYCHAIN/CAR KEYS TO ANOTHER CUSTOMER! How does that even happen? Regardless of the service, its way better than Goodyear on 112 that I swore off years ago. This auto parts store has been at this location for many years. It could be that the people running it have become so full of themselves that they forgot or never knew what customer relations are. Now I have been in the parts store area many times and barely and I mean barely get help from their staff. On one experience there, I parked my car and went in for a simple air freshener. When I left my car there were a couple of shady people in the car in front of me parked head on to me. When in the store I had the feeling that they were stalling me on a minimal item. Sure enough when I left the shady car was gone and so was the hood emblem on my car. Turns out since it was a Mercedes the hood emblems are desirable for punks. Let me make it clear that I am alleging involvement by store employees. Next, two of my kids have brought their cars there for service, against my advice. In both cases they got ripped off and the problems were never solved. They call the pot heads in the shop "Technicians". Hope you're getting a laugh. I'm sure if Manny, Moe, and the other guy knew what was going on here they would bulldozer this place. So, do I recommend Pep Boys? ABSOLUTELY NOT. read more

I've only had a few encounters with pep boys. Took my car in for routine maintenance today. I must say, the man working the phones, Doug, was a nice positive touch to my experience. I also want to note, that the amount of times the phone rang, and how many times the door opened, and how many questions were asked, Doug always had a smile on. I'm sorry. I vowed to myself that, once Pep Boys refunded the money for my oil change, I would drop this issue; however, I think people ought to know about my recent oil change experience. After many years of having all my oil changes done by Honda, I ran into a situation where I needed an oil change THAT DAY and Honda couldn't get me in. I decided to go to Pep Boys, where they had me in and out in about 45 minutes. My receipt reads "Oil change and Purolator oil filter." Fast forward a couple of months during which I traveled to most places by bicycle and barely used my car. I'm stopped at a traffic light and I smell burning oil, which I assume is coming from the car next to me. But then I get home and I notice that the blacktop driveway I am pulling in to has a bunch of dark stains, which I previously brushed off as air conditioning roll-off. I still smell oil, though, so I get down on my knees and dip my finger in the fluid dripping from the bottom of my car. It's engine oil. The next morning, I get up at the crack of dawn to get a spot on line for the best mechanic in my town, a guy I went to school with forty years ago. By the time I arrive, my car is literally gushing oil. I watch him put the car on a lift and he calls me over to point out where the oil is coming from. It turns out there is what appears to be a stress fracture in my oil filter -- but what's even more interesting is that the filter is a genuine Honda filter, not a Purolator filter, as Pep Boys listed on the receipt. My friend the mechanic then showed me that the filter appears to have been damaged while someone tried to remove it, causing stress in the metal that ultimately resulted in a hole that was now spitting hot motor oil everywhere. I immediately got on the phone and called Pep Boys. "What kind of oil filters do you use?" I asked. "Purolator, sir" the service rep told me. "Only Purolator?" I questioned. "Yes, sir." I then advised him that I had a receipt for a Pep Boys oil change listing a Purolator filter, but that I was looking at a Honda filter, likely the one from my last oil change at Honda, and it was leaking badly. He told me to come in the next day to speak to his manager. The next morning, I showed up at Pep Boys with my leaky Honda oil filter and showed it to the service rep, who immediately sighed and said "This should have never happened. I am going to speak to this mechanic right away." He then summoned the shop manager to the front. Had the manager simply admitted fault and given me a refund without an argument, I'd have left it alone. But instead, he tried to convince me that "sometimes" Pep Boys uses original Honda filters. I asked why my receipt stated that they used a Purolator filter and he told me the computer doesn't let them enter a Honda filter on the invoice. I then asked why the service rep told me they only use Purolator filters and he told me the service rep "didn't know." I then asked, "So you didn't have the right Purolator filter and you ordered one from Honda?" He shook his head as if to say yes. I then asked how they managed to get a filter from Honda, drain my oil, install the new filter, and change my oil all within 45 minutes and he replied, "Well, sometimes we have Honda filters in stock." Maybe this is true, but why first tell me they had to order the filter from Honda? This was getting painful and I was actually feeling the manager's struggle. He finally just advised the rep to give me a refund and he walked away. My best conclusion, based on input from my mechanic friend, is that Pep Boys' mechanic couldn't get the old Honda filter off, probably because they didn't have the right tool. My mechanic even showed me a common tool used to try to pry oil filters off when all else fails and the teeth marks in my damaged Honda filter matched the treads on that tool perfectly. So the Pep Boys mechanic decided to just leave the old filter in, assuming I would never know. But he had to know that he had damaged it and compromised the thin aluminum capsule that was holding all the motor oil in my tank. This is most likely the damage that ultimately caused the leak, caused irreversible damage to my blacktop driveway, and could have caused major engine damage had I not caught it in time. I thank Pep Boys for returning my $65, but you have completely lost my trust and I hope others will watch you a lot more closely if they decide to bring their cars to you. Over the last year, I have given this Pep Boys location several thousands of dollars worth of work to my four vehicles. Today (12:30-1:30pm) I had the most absolutely disturbing interaction with their male customer service representative by the name of GIO, and mechanic DAVID. I brought my vehicle in yesterday to replace front and rear brakes, front rotors, wheel rotation, and wheel alignment. Once I received text notification that all services requested on my vehicle were complete and ready for pick up I went to the location to pick it up. I asked if all of the work had been performed including the tire rotation and alignment and GIO lied to my face stating that all of the work had been done. Prior to payment I went to look at my vehicle and those services - tire rotation and alignment-in which they were billing me for over $100 had NOT been done. David came out of the garage and he also lied to my face, stating her had done the service, and questioned to me "Well, how would you know ?". I kindly asked GIO to take the alignment off of my nearly $800 invoice, since it was clear they hadn't rotated my tires and done an alignment. GIO proceeded to say to me, in front of two other female customers in the lobby, "Jesus Christ! What the fuck is wrong with you lady?! You are a fucking nut job!", and further threatened to call the police- which I welcomed by extending an offer to call them myself. GIO continued his defamation of me to one of the female customers who , not only texted her male friend to enter the lobby due to witnessing GIO's disrespectful, unwarranted, and crass behavior , but attempted to speak to GIO about his unwarranted , rude and disrespectful words also while in the presence of other customers. This customer commended me on my calm demeanor, and stated that most others would have reacted in kind to his irrational behavior. Remaining calm all the while, I simply asked GIO again to reach out to the owner or DOUG the manager to clear up the issue. Instead, GIO left the lobby and remained in the garage with the mechanics for 20 minutes, leaving me to wait. After making me wait that additional 20 minutes, GIO returned and stated he would contact the IT department to reverse the charge for services they BILLED me for but DID NOT perform. Finally after an hour , and many crude comments to me made by GIO, I paid the bill for the services without the fraudulent charges included. My family, friends and I will never patronize this Pep Boys again. read more

Super shady. I was kept waiting for 10 minutes while the desk employee spoke to someone who I assumed was a customer, but turned out to be another employee. Waited at the shop for an hour before an update. The written report that I could access from my online account said that my car was ok, had a few suggested repairs, but the person working the desk insisted that I needed major mandatory work that would cost a fortune. When my husband asked some questions he had a different story. We decided against doing the work, but mechanic went on break and left my tires off so we couldn't even leave, had to wait for him to take a full lunch break before he would put them back on. I can only comment on oil changes and inspections from the service department here, and any time I've come for these services I've been satisfied. I'm in and out quickly, and they don't try to talk you into work you don't really need done like at Mavis Tire across the street (see review for Mavis where 6 months after having complete brake job done there they told me I needed new brakes after a so-called visual inspection of my brakes. The manager, James, just couldn't find my work history so he didn't know I just had brakes done and tried telling me I needed them!). For car parts (headlights, various interior lights, tools) I prefer AutoZone across the street. I feel if you have questions or need assistance the clerks are more abundant and friendlier at AutoZone. It's hard to find someone to help you at PepBoys, and once you do find someone they seem a little put out. read more

I recently got an oil change done with Pep Boys. A couple days later I noticed that one of my headlights was out. I purchased a bulb for it and tried changing it myself, but the part that holds the actual bulb was stuck. Since I've only had good experiences at Pep Boys and the Port Jefferson location is near my work, I went over there this afternoon (8/2 at about 1pm) and asked if they would be able to assist me in just popping the bulb out. The guy at the front desk said no, there were no mechanics available at this time, but I could drop off my car and they would get to it in a few hours. I couldn't do that since I had to work, so I asked if we could schedule something the following day. He said ok and that they will charge me $50 to check it out because it may be an electrical issue (he didn't tell me they wouldn't charge me if it didn't end up being an electrical issue). I told him that it was just stuck, there's not an issue with the wiring or anything, but that sometimes things get old and stuck, and I literally just needed help getting it out. I told him that the same thing happened to my tire- it hadn't been taken off for a while so when we had to change it, it was stuck. He then said "Wait, I'm confused. Are we talking about the light or about a tire?" We were obviously talking about the light. He just wouldn't listen to me when I explained that it was NOT an electrical issue, it was just a plastic piece that was stuck. He looked up my information to make the appointment for tomorrow, so he's aware that I'm a repeat customer. I've only gone to Pep Boys (in Centereach and Port Jefferson) in the few years that I've had my car. After I left, I went across the street to Autozone, where I purchased the light. I explained the situation and it took the guy literally all of 2 minutes to pop out the light and replace it, at no charge. The fact that I was going to be charged $50 to change out a light because it was stuck and the person at the front desk wouldn't listen to me is crazy. I've been going to Pep Boys for years and the customer service I received today was ridiculous. The patronizing attitude and snark from the guy at the front desk was unnecessary and he made me feel like I was asking for some crazy favor. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to the Port Jefferson Pep Boys or any Pep Boys locations in the future, since this is how they seem to treat their repeat customers. read more

Called for an inspection and they said to drop my car off at 8am and it would be done by 10am the latest. At 945am I'm driving past and I see that my car is still parked in the same spot I left it. I call to get an update and they tell me that my car is in the back now and that it's currently on the bed. So I pull into the parking lot, park right next to my car that's supposed to be getting looked at right then, and go inside and ask what's going on. The guy at the counter that I spoke to on the phone says that they told me the inspector wouldn't be in until 10. Then why would I be told to drop my car off at 8am and why would I be assured multiple times it would be done BY 10. Terrible service every time and I don't appreciate being blatantly lied to. Brought my car in and got an inspection on my battery and alternator. They got me in and they did a great job with everything.

I wish I could give these crooks NO STARS! My 17 year old son went in for a flat tire. They told him to wait, which took 2 hours. They came back out and said it's almost done. They finally brought him the tire on his rim that was no good and told him he couldn't use the tire until he got a new rim and told him to put it in his trunk. They then charged him for a wheel balance that THEY NEVER PERFORMED. They were even stupid enough to take the old weights off the tire. When I went back for a refund they argued with me and told me that if my son is not authorized to make decisions then he shouldn't be in their store. I let them know that he is authorized but I wouldn't allow him to be taken advantage of by assholes that charged him for shit they NEVER did! DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!! read more

I suggest getting stuff here ONLY if Walmart(very close and one about 1.5 miles further) doesn't have it. It's because everything else is pretty jacked up. Went in for an oil change and The kid at the register was very dishonest and shady. He denied getting any phone calls when I've been trying to get in touch with pepboys over the phone for a half an hour. When I decided to go in person he Told me it would be cheaper to do the oil change on the paper thru them. What? How Tf is that any cheaper when it ended up costing me 85 dollars plus tax for a synthetic oil change? Last time I went in I bought the royal purple oil off the shelf there and gave it to them at the counter it cost the same thing. After 2 and a half hours tho of waiting I finally got my car back, yet now I'm left wondering if they even used the right oil I asked for. I also received a sheet of paper that claimed they rotated my tires, which is TOTAL BS I know for a fact they never rotated my tires because I have a slash from running over glass on my front tire and it's still in the front!!! I drive from NJ to get my car taken care of here.... seriously. Ask for Greg, he's an amazing mechanic and will do everything he can to save you money. He knows his stuff and takes extra good care of people who really care about their cars. The staff always recognizes me when I come in, even if it's only a few times a year. So as a followup to my son's car that was damaged by PepBoys in Port Jefferson. The yelp review got a lot of attention from them and their "customer service". After 3 weeks of them calling and offering to do the repairs at their shop,I simply refused as they could not change the oil without screwing it up, I did not want them to take out the suspension , starter, etc. The district manager called me and wanted to know what my mechanic (Mt. Sinai Wheel) would charge.. I told him to call and find out. End result: Pep Boys paid ($800) for the parts and labor to replace the oil pan and gasket. I cannot help but think that if they had assumed responsibility and not blown off my claim initially this would have been settled more amicably. I will never set foot in any of the stores again and I would advise anyone either do the oil changes yourself or find a trusted MECHANIC to do it. read more

Awful service Doesn't get any worst than this store. They want to charge hundreds of dollars to replace a $2.00 part that takes 20 minutes max to replace. And that's without the proper tools. Pepboys has lost me as a customer. I had bought a 5qt tub of oil for an oil change 2 weeks ago. ue to due weather and snow I couldn't do it right away. Just yesterday I was going to do it.I went to get the tub out of the trunk and it had leaked at least two quarts. The top was still sealed. I went back to pepboys and explained what had happened. They looked at the tub opened it up, and said I had used it and wouldn't let me exchange or credit. I was a long time customer and wouldn't try to scam them for a lousy two qts of oil. A nightmare. Customer service is non-existent. If you beg for help, you may be able to get one of the obviously disgruntled employees to grunt and point (usually in the wrong direction). Otherwise, they will refuse to make eye contact. At the parts counter they are obligated to interact with the public, but the staff is untrained and/or incompetent. Even an OEM part number will not shorten your wait or assist you in obtaining the correct part. I have been in this store when individuals who appear to be the store manager and district manager are present. These people are equally rude and dismissive to customers. Went here this morning to try to get an oil change on my Escalade and their customer service is an epic fail. The service manager had an attitude problem with customers in front of us. Maybe the manager needs to take classes in customer service. We were told it was going to take 2 hours before they can work on the car.... Buy your parts and get your work done somewhere else. My first terrible experience here was when I got a ticket for no inspection on a saturday. They told me if you get your car inspected in 24 hrs they dismiss the ticket. So I had no choice but to go to some chain place like Pep Boys to get my tires mounted as real shops are not open on sundays. It was a nightmare. They claimed they could mount my reverse mounted 18 inch low profile tires, but it was apparent they were way over their head. They took hours to do it, in the process really screwing up my wheels with scrapes and gouges. But I was happy that my car got inspected. However i notice my front wheel is rubbing on the wheel well. These idiots put the larger back tire on the front wheel and the smaller tire on the back wheel! I bring it back and they fix it. Then I go to do my brakes a month later and notice they crossthreaded my lugnut on with an impact wrench! It was a bitch to get off and I had to replace my wheel stud. Real parts stores have crappy hours cause they sell primarily to shops so I went there again to get rotors for my wifes car. Take the whole thing apart and go to put new rotor on, it is the wrong one! Had to get a ride back there... They do not have the right one in stock. Fortunately the real parts store (station auto parts) was open and I got the right part. Today I get struts for my wifes car and this time I wisely look up the part number they gave me and is it wrong again! So I go back there pissed and they are like well do we have the right one in stock? Asking me! Umm how the hell do I know you gave me the wrong one. Turns out they dont of course but they can order. No thanks, I took my cash and went to the "real" parts store which pissed them off when I said that and guy was mumbling expletives while walking back to register. Never returning. Plus all the junk in their aisles is low quality overpriced china junk. You get what you pay for in both employee pay and products. read more

On 7/7/13 we brought in our 2003 Subaru, to check and diagnose the air conditioning problem. After filling and testing the system, we were informed that the condenser/compressor was bad and would need to be replaced. After about $800 in charges, we were told it was repaired. About a week later we noticed it was not blowing as cold as it should have. We set an appointment to have it checked again. On our most recent visit ((8/6?13) they informed me that it also had a split line and to repair that would be an additional $400. Needless to say we took the car back and did not authorize the repairs. We feel like we were cheated and taken advantage of. Had we been informed that the total repair would have been $1,200 we would not have authorized the repair on a 10 year old car. We have been using Pep Boys to service our cars for quite some time, and will NOT return. Additionally, we feel we are due some fair compensation for the money wasted. I would give you 5 stars for the rep that stopped putting tires on my old car because I told him I did not want to spend too much to keep this car on the road. BUT - I asked them to check a few things: Turn signals The squeak in the front end What did I need beside tires and brakes to pass the state inspection? They checked the signals ($45) and the squeak ($20) Then they did they state inspection - which repeated the above checks and charged me for that too... They said I'd need over $1500 in repairs. I'm OK with state inspection that should be WELL under $50 They charged over $100 for the services... I feel taken. My wife returned to get the results from failed state inspection, I called to ask about getting double charged... the manager that processed my payment was not available.. He was going to call me back...really? Pep Boys: I'd be happy to revise this review, but from the looks of other reviews... I guess you think this practice is OK. Good Luck. read more
