Took my granddaughters older Ford Taurus in for rear tires after I realized the rear wheels must be out of alignment. Got new tires and made an appointment for what I figured was a big and unusual job. A week later took it for the alignment, took all day for a very difficult job. Freddie was the service writer, fast, friendly, and knowledgeable. Service tech, was outstanding, shared all details of the job with me. This review is definitely worth the 5-Star rating, so read on...I bought a set of tires for my 1990 Chrysler New Yorker/Landau. A mint-condition classic with lots of sentimental value (my Dad's last car before he passed). I bought the Pep Boys brand (Futuras- black wall side out). But, although they were good quality tires, I was not happy with the "new black wall look". My previous tires were white walls and it really made a difference in the car's appearance. So, I was not satisfied with the purchase of the tires. At the time of purchase, there were no white wall tires in stock (El Cajon store). Yesterday (8.28.15) I decided to call Mario Salas, Service Manager at the Santee Pep Boys. Explained my dissatisfaction with the "black wall tires" and asked if there was anything he could do- even though I had purchased them at another Pep Boys store three days before. He listened and said he would make a few calls to see what he could do, but could not promise anything until he researched my situation. Within one hour, Mario returned my call and said that he had found 4 Uniroyal white wall tires and asked if I were willing to bring my car in (with the original sales receipt) and he would install the white wall tires on my car. I could not believe it! I rushed to the Santee store and received "concierge level", A #1 attention! Talk about Customer Service! This IS the way I remembered good ol' American Customer Service was! If you're a woman and you go to this Pep Boys, be careful when dealing with their store manager Tin. He asked if he could help me and then proceeded to tell me that blinker lights don't exist. After multiple times asking him how blinker lights do not exist, he finally got it through his head but then said "Oh, I thought you said fluid." My husband and I got a flat on our van last night with my wheelchair-bound 77-year-old mother and our three-month- and 5-year-old daughters in tow. Our auto insurance had a little mixup with the towing company and we arrived almost an hour later than expected. The manager graciously agreed to take on our tire change even though it meant we'd still be there after closing. We ended up leaving about an hour after they closed, and live over 60 miles away from the shop, so getting a ride home wasn't really an option, especially at that time of day. Their kindness in seeing our repair through made a huge difference in how our night turned out. read more

Went there for an alignment, said I needed new strut mounts, got the strut mounts, took it back still not feeling right after a couple months and they said now you need new control arm bushings, so I went and had another opinion by a dealer. He said I should have stayed with the old strut mounts and I don't need control arm bushings, so basically I was lied to and now I will never go back there. They got a hundred dollars of my money now and will never get any again read more

This is probably the poorest run business that I have ever encountered. It begin when on Monday I ordered a tire online as a replacement for a tire that acquired a nail in the sidewall and was thus dangerous to continue driving on. Pep Boys website said the tire would be available the next day (which was the fastest delivery I could find anywhere), so I placed the order online and accepted the offer to make an appointment for installation on the following day, Tuesday. I received an email confirmation for the appointment, but it said nothing confirming that I had placed an order for a tire. Just to be sure, I called the 800 number. I remained on hold for 15 minutes, listening to a barrage of loud, annoying Pep Boys commercials, including one which literally featured fingernails scraping a blackboard, over and over. After 15 minutes of that torture I was so annoyed that I swore I would never do business with Pep Boys again once I got this tire installed. I hung up and wrote them an email explaining the failure to receive a confirmation on my purchase. After submitting the webform email I received a notice that I would receive a response in 48 hours, which was not very useful considering that my appointment was 36 hours away, and I really didn't want to wait 48 hours to learn that my tire order was not actually received. Fortunately I received a call from Pep Boys within a few hours, and I was assured that the tire was indeed ordered and that it would be available at the time of my appointment Tuesday. I arrived promptly at 7PM the next day at the Pep Boys for my appointment and watched in amazement for several minutes while while the service manager copied my contact information, car information and tire information from his computer screen onto a hand-written work order. It felt like 1985, all over again. When he finally finished his exercise in penmanship I was told that my car would be ready by 8:30. I explained that I had made an appointment for this 10 minutes procedure, but he said there were many people ahead of me. I asked what was the purpose of making an appointment if I had to wait for the many people a head of me, but there was no explanation. The service manager was very polite and apologetic, but apparently making an appointment actually serves no practical purpose at Pep Boys. 25 minutes later I was asked if I had received an email telling me that the tire had arrived at that location. I explained that I had not even received an email telling me that the tire had been ordered, but that I was assured by the customer service rep that the tire would be there at the time of my appointment. He searched the stock room, and he and another employee searched on the computer for 30 minutes. Both were very polite and apologetic, but had absolutely no idea where my tire was. I was told that the warehouse was closed and that I should call them the next morning. I asked for their phone number and received a card. Wednesday morning I went to call them but found that the business card I was given had the store's address but no phone number! WTF? I found the number online and called them, and was told that the tire would definitely be in by 11am on Friday. Unhappy about having to continue to drive with a nail in the sidewall, I agreed to wait as it seemed like the fastest way I could get the new tire. I called at noon on Friday and was told that the truck had not arrived and to call back in a few hours. I received a call at 3pm and was told that the truck had finally arrived, but my tire was not on it. Furthermore, now four days after I had placed the order, they had no idea where the tire was or when it would arrive. I told them to cancel the order. That was my first and most certainly my last experience with Pep Boys. I really don't understand how a company like this can remain in business. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about my experience. Mark Cervantes was the service writer. Juan Marquez was the mechanic. I arrived in El Cajon from northern California at noon. I took my mom out to lunch. While returning her around 3 PM, I heard a periodic sound. I opened the hood and discovered the main serpentine belt partially failed because the idle pulley went bad. I incorrectly thought it was tensioner pulley. After locating the parts by phone I decided to drive the 7 miles to the store. Three miles short the belt completely failed and with no water pump circulation I pulled to the side of the word and called AAA for the last three miles. Upon inspection, Juan quickly realized that I identified the wrong part as what failed. When Pep Boys discovered they didn't have the idler pulley in stock, they didn't give up. Pep Boys located an in stock part that would work. This extra effort allowed me to be back on the road in less than 90 minutes. Juan worked at least 20 minutes past the end of his shift to get me on the road that evening. Juan Marquez and Mark Cervantes and thus the Pep Boys team went above and beyond the call of duty. I hope not to breakdown while traveling again, but if that does happen, I would not hesitate to come back. I was changing my brake light and couldn't remove a stripped screw. I went in to this Pep Boys to ask for help and I received all the help I needed! A woman named Ashley came in and handled my problem so assuredly and so deftly, she is quite impressive. She used every available screwdriver she could get her hands on, she was determined to get the screw out for me. Each time I was ready to give up hope, she made me believe that there was at least one more option. In the end, she removed my stupid screw and even apologized to me for taking so long but without her help and perseverance, I'm pretty sure the screw would still be in there today. I'm a customer of several years. Only real problem I have had was during the Mgr Bruce retiring from the service area. I think anywhere you go there will be times you will have to wait longer for an oil change. Right on the money sometimes & way off for other times due to illness or whatever. All in all they do a good job. I have put thousands of dollars into other repairs through them. Batteries, shocks, tires, routine maintenance, engine problems & not had any problems with repairs. I go there because I know if I have a problem I can go back & get it corrected. read more

I brought my Xterra here about 2 weeks ago; the timing belt snapped and caused some nasty engine/cylinder damage. The work took about 9 days to complete, and while the repair was quite expensive, I'm confident that I wasn't overcharged after asking around and doing a little research. I just came in for struts and they have a deal for half off the labor, so I saved $225. Which is more than good for me. While I was waiting, they found a big bubble in my rear tire. I couldn't afford tires too so they helped me with price matching. It works even on online tires. I am extremely happy and more than satisfied with their spectacular service. From initial phone call to picking up my repaired vehicle, this was the most excellent experience I have ever had at ANY automotive service center! With 315,770 miles on my Nissan Sentra I have had a lot of experience with service centers. I phoned my local Pep Boys, store #898 in Santee, CA to report that a pair of rear struts that I had previously purchased and had installed there were defective and needed to be replaced. It was Monday, May 20th, 2103 at 2:00 PM when I called to inquire about the availability of the parts and the service department's ability to complete the repairs before close of business. This is when my remarkable experience began. Tiffany answered the phone in a most professional manner. She did not sound rushed with a classic "thankyouforcallingPepBoyspleasehold", click, music. She was smooth, professional and clear when she answered, "Thank you for calling Pep Boys, this is Tiffany. May I please place you on a short hold? I have a customer in front of me here at the counter." Not only did this un-rushed, polite answer show respect to me on the phone, I could not help but think how respected the person standing in front of her must have felt. Very professional phone skills were employed. Tiffany did return to me on the phone in a minute or two, just like she said she would. She apologized for the hold, said her name again and asked how she could help me. She checked the status of the parts in the computer and confirmed that along with the current work load at the shop and my availability to get the car to her by 4:00 PM, the repairs could be completed before close of business. The phone call ended politely. I realized that I needed an extra 30 minutes to be able to remove the speaker box in my trunk before bringing the car in so I called back at around 4:30 PM to confirm that I should still head towards the shop, about 6 miles away. The gentleman on the line indicated that the technician that performs this kind of work would be arriving at 5:00 PM and that I could still bring car in for service. I arrived around 4:45 PM and this is when the face to face customer service skills, salesmanship, customer expectation setting and confidence of job performance were so professionally displayed by Tiffany. She greeted me saying, "Welcome to Pep Boys, how may I help you?" I answered by saying that I had called about the struts for the Nissan and she said, "Ah yes. Mr. Bandy. I pulled your parts from the stock room and have them sitting right over there. I wanted to make sure we actually had them in stock so as soon as we got off of the phone, I went to pull them from the shelves to hold them for you." I thought, Wow! Here is a true professional who understand how to provide excellent customer service. Pricing had not even been discussed yet but with such excellent salesmanship, the customer was already being helped to form the opinion that the parts were already theirs. This is very helpful when trying to get a customer to make a buying decision. Tiffany also remembered my name as being associated with the parts and service request without having to refer to the paperwork that she had already started and had hanging in a folder awaiting my arrival. I know that I am just another customer in her day but right about now I'm starting to feel, well, a little bit special. This is not common it today's fast paced world. Tiffany now began to set the customer expectation. Not knowing for sure if the defective parts would be covered under warranty, she quoted the job as if I would have to pay full replacement price for the parts and indicated that if the parts were in fact covered by the warranty that the total cost of repairs would be less than the quoted total. This gave her the opportunity to "wow me" when the total for the parts and service was less than what was quoted. She understood the warranty for the type of parts being considered and knew the types of things that could make the parts under warranty or not. She indicated that once she is able to get one of her technicians to take the car for a test drive she would be able to determine the warranty status. She knew better than to just say, "Oh yes, this will be covered under warranty." It was obvious to me that Tiffany understood the duties of her job very well. She also allowed me to apply an electronic coupon that I had on my iPhone for 10% off of all service as well as a $19.99 oil change and tire rotation coupon that I had forgotten to bring from home. She was already aware of these special offers and was quick to apply them for me. I received a phone call at 6:56 PM indicating that my car was ready and that the bill was nearly $300 less than what was initially quoted. Talk about a "Wow Factor"! Thank you for hiring and retaining such professionals as Tiffany. I tried Pep Boys for the first time today. I needed tires and also I thought maybe brakes but it ended up being my splash guard that had been dragging under the car and creating noise. The NEW service manager was AMAZING!!!! I made an appointment online for 11 am but decided to drop car off early before my husband had to work. We dropped the car off at about 8:40 am and Mario Salas (Service manager) got my car in right away and by 10:30 I got a call that my brakes were fine and the new tires were put on and alignment done and splash guard fixed!!!! In just 2 hours :) I was so happy that everything was done and I didn't even need to get a ride down there because it was all finished before my husband needed to leave for work. Went to Pep Boys to have them check out my battery and charging system as my vehicle needed a jump start to get it running. They tested the battery, determined it was faulty, and then tested the charging system. They replaced the battery in minimal time. Although this is a minor repair, I am pleased with the service, the technicians and "jovial manager". I recently had the same issue with a different vehicle and a "big block retailer" sold me a battery, but miss-diagnosed a faulty alternator. read more
