I had a noon appt. they did not take me until 12:40, on my lunch hour....and then a simple oil change took another 40 minutes.....I was supposed to have the tires rotated, but couldn't wait any longer for the incompetent inexperienced mechanics. I ordered a new set of tires and an installation package from Pepboys.Com to be installed at the Union, NJ location. The website experience was good and there was a good deal in place if you were buying 4 new tires. I made the appointment at time of purchase but beside the initial confirmation email received no communication about the appointment. I called the day before and the tires had not arrived yet; but luckily came in the day of my appointment. I arrived at 10:45AM for an 11:00AM appointment; but they said they were so backed up that it would be two hours. Luckily, I had someone follow me there so I was able to go about my day. I called twice (which took almost 15 mins each time to actually get through) follow up and my car had not be worked on yet, I wasn't able to come get it until almost 5. We had asked to keep two of the tires and they did not put them in my car so we had to go back in to get the tires. Overall not the best experience, the staff was friendly and tried to be accommodating. I was flexible since it was a weekend day and I had other means of transportation so chose not to let it ruin my day; but I wouldn't expect to have your work done on time. read more

A rep is replying with a generic reply, but nothing will happen. I sent an email when it happened and no one ever responded. Are you responding now because I made it public? What's the point for me to email you, when Pep Boys is going to deny it any way? What upsets me about this whole ordeal is that the mechanic knew he or she damaged my vehicle and said nothing. Instead, on my print out/points check, he or she put that everything was good. Never again. I'm definitely filing a complaint with the BBB/Consumer Affairs. Horrible horrible experience. Went for an oil change and tire repair for a nail in one tire. Made an appointment and had to wait almost 4 hours for the service to get done. Besides that, less then 24 hours after the service my tire is losing air again, thought maybe they missed another small hole but NO. Took the car to a local tire place and they show me that "patch" in the photo, told me it was loose just inside the tire. It's smaller then a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of rubber that has clearly been cut with a scissor. 0 ADHESIVE to it. Guy said they know it was used cause the grey was also around the hole which was whatever horrible adhesive they tried to use. Told me in 30 years of tire business he has never seen a patch this bad, called it comical. He actually asked if he could frame it in his shop, 100% serious. $20 tire repair for nothing. Couldn't even last 24 hours. Duct tape would have worked better. I can't even imagine what crap oil they put in my engine, definitely not the "full synthetic" I paid for. Pep Boys Route 22 Union appointment Day One: Friday morning 8:00 I arrive for my appointment to wait for new tires to be installed. At 9:30 I was informed that the new tires had not been delivered yet. Oops. Danny, the manager -in title only- sent me home by Lyft. I came back 5 hours later. Luis had mounted and installed the tires. This is day four of my brand new tire (bought 4) going flat as a pancake. Installed on Friday, flat on Friday night. I had to change the tire and bring the new flat tire back on Saturday. Left the tire at pep boys from 2:00- 8:00 PM - no repair after a full day of runaround talk telling me that any minute it would be done. I was asked to bring it back in Sunday when the manager, Danny would be there. Why can't employees/mechanics at a tire company find or fix a leak?? Day three: back to Pep Boys in Union NJ. Tire dropped off at 11:00 AM. I got the telephone runaround ALL DAY! Picked up my truck with what was to be a repaired tire at 5:00PM [repairs don't make them money so don't expect to be taken care of in a timely or respectful manner.] As I sit here on Monday day four: my truck is outside with the same tire flat. Absolutely disgusting. The first time I did not use my trusted mechanic together with Tire Rack for new tires. A lesson learned and the issue is still not resolved. Triple A is coming again, to remove the tire and put on the spare. I went in for an oil change at 9:30am on Wednesday. I was told the oil change shouldn't take more than 2 hours, but I didn't get my car back until 4:30pm. They charged me $64 for a synthetic oil change and gum out (after a $20 coupon was applied) and called me later asking to change my air filters saying it would cost one thirty-four. I asked 1 dollar and 34 cents? They said no, $134 in total. Needless to say, I was taken aback from the jump in price. I was impressed by the reviews of the battery I wanted and forgot to check the reviews of the shop....my bad. I ordered a new Bosch AGM battery online (Monday), the shopping experience was decent and indicated that, while not currently in stock, in would be available the following day. To be safe I scheduled my installation for Wednesday late-afternoon. Being the savvy consumer, I called Wednesday morning and confirmed that the battery was available so as to avoid a wasted trip (see where this is going). Imagine my disappointment when the service counter attendee informed me that they where 1) Mistaken about their inventory when I called, 2) Unable to order the desired battery ??????? and 3) All to willing to install a lesser non-AGM Bosch battery. Anyone whose pondering getting their oil changed by Pep Boys should read my review first!!! If I could leave 0 stars I would!!! I brought in my Mercedes 320 for an oil change about a month ago. HUGE MISTAKE. The next day I was taking my daughter to school when an odd error message popped up on my dashboard. After that, my car cut off. So I started it up, drove about 5 minutes and it cut off again. This happened all the way home. So I drove back to Pep Boys to explain the problem. At first they tried to blame it on me but then they got the car on the lift and realized there was no oil in it!!!! Apparently the seal broke or it wasn't put on properly -something like that. I'm not exactly sure what happened but I do know it was their error. They refused to admit it but I saw them back there whispering. Then they came to the front where I was and were super nice to me. They got me an Uber to go home, fixed my car free of charge and then paid for an Uber for me to come back. I appreciate them fixing their mistake and accommodating me in the process but their error literally almost blew the engine in my Benz. Fast forward I took my Benz to the Mercedes mechanic since I can hear the engine has a soft knock to it now. I brought it in to get my oil changed since I'm thinking the knocking is coming from the fact my oil may need to be changed -(yes so soon) After the mechanic goes under my car, he tells me the gasket is missing from the drain plug on my oil which means more oil had leaked out. We're not sure if Pep Boys lost the piece or damaged it when they serviced my car but they failed to replace it. The obvious thing would have been for them to alert me or fix the problem they caused but they swept it under the rug. Now I'm sitting here in the Mercedes mechanic getting my engine cleaned off since oil was spilled all over it. I also found out that I was taken for a ride as they never changed my filters or the oil itself. Horrible!!!! I don't recommend anyone bring any kind of car to Pep Boys for ANY reason. My experience with them has been extremely unprofessional to say the least. They don't know what they're doing. Not worth spending the $125.00 I spent there to get my oil change. Negative stars... YEP YOU READ THAT RIGHT. I will never use Pep boys again. I brought my car in on a Saturday around 1 pm to get it check out. They sent me a text so I can track it. About 6 hours goes by and I went back to the store to see the status. When I got there my car was in the exact parking spot and the advisor told me that they will have to look at it the next day. When they finally look at my car they said I needed a catalytic converter, exhaust pipe , center and rear muffler. I went to another mechanic for a second opinion and he said it was fine. I just need a new coils and spark plugs. The funny thing is that I also got a tune up couple of months ago from the same Pep Boys. What did they actually do to my car? We called ahead of time to make sure the tire we needed for our car was in stock. They told us they had it. We rushed there at 8am to get there. Upon arriving there we were told they don't have the tire for our car as we needed 'high performance tires.' The guy did not have it in stock! I went this morning to have my brake lights looked at due to an indicator light on the instrument panel. After waiting for over an hour, I had to ask about my car's progress and the advisor comes back saying both lights need to be changed and they have to be ordered, and he has a list of other things that are recommended to be done. Problem is all of these are recent repairs the car has had done, some of which were done by this Pep Boys location!!! Called and asked to speak to the manager, Mac, who was completely not helpful. When I explained what happened to him, he said something like " Oh well I'll ask that the guys don't recommend things that have already been done." By this time I'm fuming, like are they gaslighting me or what? All I asked for was help with my brake lights which they previously replaced the bulbs for and I was there today for the third time to have looked at. I'm super upset with their service and their 5hours wait time has to be the cherry on top but wait a minute .. I was advised that the vehicle needed new front tires and brakes. Okay I know this is a GSA vehicle government owned but seriously you are trying to scam the government.. so as I approached the front desk the guy had this list of require maintenance and that they contacted our company and they was just waiting on approval.. I'm scratching my head because I'm the one whose in-charge of what needs to be done accordingly knowingly this vehicle had tires replace last year.. so instead of helping me by getting the oil change in an hour like he said.. he was making deals behind my back contacting the company giving them false information and probably saying that I requested to be done. Went here for a tire swap, balance, and alignment. They did the job, but their estimated 1 and a half turned into 5-6 hours. They answered their phone once out of the many times I tried to call to check the status, but had the time to call and ask if I wanted them to do my rear breaks and shocks (and estimated $550-600). I have stopped in here quite a bit to get parts and things fixed on multiple vehicles. The staff is pretty helpful and usually understanding if you have a gripe about something. I've had tires changed here, fuse boxes fixed, batteries replaced, etc. They can move a little too slow for my liking at times but I wouldn't come back if they didn't do a good job. I think they're a better place to go to then Advanced Auto Parts because they actually have garages where they can do work on your vehicle. As for inventory they offer the same types of products so it is really a matter of you wanting to fix the vehicle yourself or letting a mechanic on site do it for a reasonable hourly rate. read more

I went in for a wheel aligment and brakes which has a lifetime warranty. I get a call that the axle is leaking and needs replacement and is going to cost about $200 to fix it. I'm like ok change it. I get another call half an hour later - "we can't get your axle out, we will need to replace the hub axle assembly". I'm like don't do the work I'll come back for it later. "We damaged the hub trying to get the axle out so we can't put it back". How much is the hub? About $400. I went in thinking I was going to spend 300 to 400 dollars at Pep Boys and end up with an invoice over $1400. I had to fight to get a %10 off. I end up charging to my car $1294. I feel like if the mechanic was trying to get the axle out and could not they should have call me and say we can't get the axle out and if we try to force we are running the risk of damagin the hub assembly. Do you want us to force it out? That should have been the question. read more

Worst fuckin service ever !!!! I'm 49 years old and have never in my life had an experience like this. I came in to have my controller arm looked at, because of a prior experience I had. Pep boys told me it was my struts and a whole bunch of other shit. So, it being a Saturday and I needed my car for work I told them to do the work. I dropped the car off at 11am . They had it all day, called me at 5 to pick it up. First thing I noticed they never rotated the the tires. So 45 minutes later after they rotated the tires they gave me the key again , as I'm leaving the lot the steering wheel went completely off, the traction lite came on and stayed on. I made a u turn on 22 and took it back. The mechanic who gave me the keys knew the steering was off and the traction lite was on and he still gave me the car like that. Wtf !! After I brought it back, they took it back in the shop, about an hour later a mechanic came out and said they can't fix it and I need to come back on Monday!!! The mechanic said " he was doing me a favor" , by looking at it and that he only works there part-time. Sons of bitches !! They didn't do the wheel alignment, they didn't rotate the tires !! What else didn't they do ?? They charged me $2000.12. Yes that's 3, zeros!! Needless to say I have escalated this situation. My advice... stay the fuk away!! read more

This was one of the worst car experiences I've had. I went to Pep boys to simply fix one of my my headlights. The guy initially quoted me one price, and because I could afford it, I thought to get the other one done. He said it would only be an extra 10 dollars. I agreed, but thirty minutes later, I find out one of my fuses had gone out. Now, it was gonna cost me over $100 to fix my headlights. Im not sure how it jumped so much and argued with the guy but the salesman was rude and dismissive. Worst of all, after i went to pick up my car, IT WOULD NOT START. It took about 5 minutes for the car to start and to get the engine running smoothly. Last time I'm ever going to this Pep boys. read more

This establishment is wonderful! I ran in yesterday, during the nor'eastern to inquire about fixing my back tail light. Even though they were busy they were able to squeeze me in. After a short wait and a complementary cup of coffee I was ready. But just as I was about to pay the power went out. After several times of rebooting to computers they gave up and told me not to worry about the bill. Today I'm going back to pay. If a company is kind and caring enough to accommodate you & then not charge you. They're worth the trip to pay them. I recently went to pepboys to get the oil changed in my car. A week later I went to add windshield wipers fluid to me car only to find a full bottle of synthetic oil. Sitting next to the engine. Called and spoke to a manager who basically dismissed my feelings about the issue. After going back and forth, he finally offer that I bring me car in so he could look it over and make sure everything is ok. Turned out that the oil was low. The technician did not fill it correctly. I question if the oil change was done at all. This is the second time ive had issues at this location. About 7 months ago I have a realignment done only to find out that it was not done correctly once I got it on the highway. I called the location after I left and they apologize and told me that they were really busy that day and so maybe it did not get serviced correctly. They then asked me to come back another day when that service guy was available but I was never able to with my busy schedule. Needless to say, I went on a limb thinking I would get different results but I did not. Poor customer service/Poor car servicing. read more

I brought my car there for a check engine light issue. Pep boys had my car for two days and after numerous calls to there service dept the told me that I would have to spend over $800 dollars to repair this that and the other with no guarantee the the problems would be fix. After hearing this I told them to stop work and that I would have the car towed to another mechanic. My car was prepared by the second mechanic for $175.00 and that price included towing. Pep Boys are a bunch of thevies. The mechanics are incompetent. I will never bring my car to them again. I am quite sure they have ripped a lot of people off. I came in early mid morning, on July 18th, 2018. I was greeted by Branko, whom is a service advisor here. I told him my battery light previously turned on and killed the battery on my car. He preceded to explain to me that I need to have a "charging system check" performed on my vehicle, and within 10 mins my car was in the shop being diagnosed. Very professional, educated and well spoken when it came down to explaining the parts and how it works in the vehicle. I'm so happy I came here first. My car was done within two hours. All the staff were friendly as well, and helpful as to my shopping experience in the store while I waited. I would definitely come back here for any of my other car needs. read more

During the end of December I ordered a set of 4 winter tires from the Tire Rack. During the check-out process, I was offered the option of having the tires shipped a "preferred installer". In order to allow me to compare the long list of installers in my area, I was presented with locations, prices, and available services. As replacing tires is not that complex of a task, I chose the lowest cost option, which was Pep Boys of Union New Jersey. I even chose one that was more expensive against a no name brand as I believed I could "trust" Pep Boys brand. As soon as the tires arrived to the Union NJ Pep Boys location, I called up and made an appointment for the next day. Upon arrival on the designated time, I was told that I would have to wait two hours for my car to be serviced. I wish I walked out then. However, I chose to wait, and wasted 2 hours doing nothing, as I did not come prepared to wait that long, as I thought my appointment meant I would be seen shortly, and it does not take much time to change tires. Once they finally pulled in my car, a 'mechanic', who was wearing filthy clothes (no pep boys uniform and an outfit which seemed to have been worked in for many days without a wash and frankly he could have been mistaken for being homeless), picked up an air wrench and started to remove the lugs. When he got to the 5th lug, which was a factory installed lock, he took the lug key and I watched in horror as he struggled to figure out how the lock worked. I was about to ask them to have someone else do the service when he finally gave up and spoke to the manager. The manager came to me and said that the lock was "over tightened" and he wanted me to approve them using a more "brute force" method. I explained to the manager that the locks were installed at the factory and I am sure they were torqued to the specification. However, looking at the staff there, I realized that it would be safer if I took it to a tire store and had them do it. So I told them to put my car down and take it out of the bay as I would not be letting them do anything else as they were having trouble removing a simple locking lug nut. A couple weeks after that experience at Pep Boys, I was driving my car on the highway at night, and I started to feel a vibration and noise from the front passenger side of the car. As I had not had time to go to another tire store to change to the new winter tires, I was confused what was going on as I never felt this before. I pulled over and looked at the wheel well and tire, etc. I was then I realized that 4 of the 5 lugs were MISSING!!! The only lug that remained was the locking one that the 'mechanic' could not remove. I had watched the 'mechanic' reinstall the 4 bolts that he removed during my visit at Pep Boys, but it seems his air wrench did not torque them enough to prevent them from backing out during driving. I immediately called Pep Boys and demanded to speak to a manager. I was connected to Larry who, in my agitated state as I realized how close I came to losing a wheel at highway speed, listened to my impassioned description of the above story as I realized I could have been killed if the last lug snapped off. Larry told me he was new to the role and that he would send me a tow truck ASAP. When asked where he would tow the car to, Larry responded that it would be brought back to his location to have new lugs fitted. I told Larry that was not going to happen as I did not trust his team to fill my car with gas, let alone replace lugs that they installed incorrectly in the first place which could have resulted in serious injury or death. Awful service! Went to have a nail in my tire examined and possibly plugged. After "checking the tire" they said it was not able to be fixed and my only option was to replace the tire. I had two tires put on my car and the bozo installing them allowed the air hose line to drape on to my quarter panel... while using the impact wrench the air hose moved back-and-forth quite a bit, this left scratches all over the side of my left quarter panel. I didn't want to be a complainer and being a detailer I could easily take the scratches out but when I eventually did let them know about the situation they were very unapologetic and copped a "what do you want me to do about it" kind of attitude... Not good service at all. I had my first service with Pep boy on December, but I never received my $170 rebate, because it was too late to file application. That was my first service, but no one told me the process how to get rebate. Horrible awful customer service.... I created a Yelp just for them.. I will never go here again, even if they gave me free oil changes for 10 years, because it will probably take them an entire shift to do an oil change. I went here just to buy new tires and ended up wasting my entire Saturday waiting for them to change it. If you think I'm exaggerating give them a try, I guarantee you it will take them 5-6 hours to change 4 tires. It's a 15 -20 minute job !!! How in the hell did it take 5 hours !!? The store is located in the heart of Route 22. This has so much more products than the Auto Zone and has more staff. You can get your car service and they have a small waiting room which looks like it can get crowded on a busy day. They do the typical car service but not sure how much the prices are. Parking can be scarce if a lot of people are there. Luckily, there is parking all around the building and its a short walk. read more

I visited Pepboys today Very nice place, Staff very Friendly and Helpful. I had my car service and parts installed . While waiting for car service to be complete. I walked about the store. I was very impressed How well stock it was and with large Variety of Everything tires, battery chargers, Car Stereos, all kinds of speakers , just loads of items , you want it they have it, Soon after was told my car was done .
