I've been eating at this restaurant since I was a child in the 80s. It went from being the place my dad took me and my brother to breakfast on Saturday mornings to the place I'd go for the Sunday soup for lunch. The angel chicken is great, and the chicken strips are seriously the best. The pancakes are the standard fare (which is a compliment, in my book!), and the thick French toast is delicious and filling. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about this place, and that is fine with me. The lack of fanciness is what keeps this place affordable...and leaves that wonderful nostalgic feeling within me. The staff is always attentive and makes sure you are happy with your meal and your overall experience. read more

We ordered breakfast, three adults and two children. Everyone RAVED over the sausage. I thought the biscuits tasted very stale under the gravy. Gravy was okay. Excellent service by a true professional. Had wonderful burgers juicy, loaded with goodies, and wonderfully soft buns. The fries came hot, salted, perfectly cooked. The two cooks which we talked with were first-rate people and truly do their job. On a humorous note because of our meal I asked if the new CPR, and their policy is that both cooks know CPR. All things considered, do yourself a favor and opt for the fast food joint across the street instead of the 49er. I stopped for a hearty breakfast before heading up the road to Mount St. Helens and the first thing I noticed were the prices... Let's just say they were high. I ordered the half order of biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns, and water, and the bill was ~$11. I knew what I was getting into when I ordered but damn, I expected more. Both servings were on the generous side but the food was only so-so. I'll call it disappointing at best. The service wasn't much better. The woman who sat me was pleasant and trying so props to her, but the waitress that served me was rushed despite the fact that the place wasn't that busy. In summary, would I recommend Peper's 49er Restaurant? Absolutely not. read more

My husband and I stopped in a few years back on a trip to the Portland area from near Seattle. What a delightful surprise! Friendly service and great comfort food, not to mention generous portions! When we travel to a new area, even passing through, we try to look beyond the chain places for something more local--Peper's did not disappoint. Our server came promptly with water and menus and offered great coffee. My hubby chose the tasty Old Timer's sandwich on grilled sourdough piled high with meat and a yummy mustard potato salad. My own Shrimp Louis had a veritable mountain of lovely little shrimp served on a mix of romaine, baby greens, and spinach on a huge platter. I had to enlist the hubs' help to finish. Dessert was an excellent slice of warm strawberry-rhubarb pie with just the right mix of sweet and tart (topped with a huge dollop of whipped cream) which the hubs proclaimed the best he's ever had. I was pleasantly surprised by the offering of tapioca pudding which was the right amount of creamy and took me back to my childhood. The best part, though, was listening to our server interact with the elderly gentlemen at two of the other tables--her empathy lending a concerned ear made us smile. I had a grilled chicken salad with was great, good size portions. My boyfriend had the Silver Miner burger & he loved it. He usually doesn't finish his fries but loved their fries. Will definitely be back. read more

Randomly stopped in after visiting Mt. Saint Helens. Glad we did. My sister went with the fish&chip special, which she said was tasty. I went with the open face roast beef. They did not skimp on the gravy. My plate looked like a sea of brown gravy with a sandwich and mashed potatoes as garnish. It was delicious. My sister also got a sundae with her special. The waitress rattled it off quickly and my sister was not 100% sure what she had ordered. She was very happy with what arrive. The vanilla ice cream was pretty good. Again they were generous, this time it was with the chocolate syrup. The staff was friendly and the food came out quickly. We barely put our order in when the salads arrived. The drinks were refilled quickly. It had a local, down-home feel and atmosphere. Some of customers looked like they had been coming here for decades. I enjoy finding out of the way, friendly, local establishments with good, solid basic food, this fit the bill perfectly. If you are foodie snob, you might not enjoy. read more

Full of senior citizens. Senior citizens who like to eat, that is. This is my favorite of the diners along this strip of highway. GREAT chicken fried steak. My dad always ordered the liver and onions and loved them. All the basic burger/fries, fish (halibut) and chips, etc. and a daily special. Really good navy bean soup if they're having it that day, and lucky you if it's turkey day. Also fine (though not fancy) breakfasts. Best of the desserts (included in the meal) IMO are the bread pudding and the rice pudding. Homemade and delicious. The bread is pretty tasty, too. read more

Lucky us for showing up on a Thursday when they roast fresh turkeys! We were a little concerned when we walked in and saw how dated the interior was. But it was clean and offered Wi-Fi. Service was great, prompt & friendly & she told us about the fresh turkey. We both had salads that were crisp with good dressings. When our meals came out, I had ordered my gravy on the side, hubby didn't and was sorry about that. Lots of turkey, very good stuffing, ok mashed potatoes & cranberry sauce. We go here all the time for breakfast. I'm not too keen on their taco specials on Tuesdays. I just wasn't a fan. We have eaten dinner here a few times...the hubs usually has breakfast for dinner on those days. I am a fan of liver & onions, if it is prepared properly. Peper's has really decent liver & onions. My standard breakfast is the Big Mountain because I can get kielbasa as the meat. The morning cooks know how to hard poach eggs, which is awesome because any type of runny egg yolk just skeeves me out. While it is not the best food I've ever eaten, I will give this place 4 stars because it is reliable. read more

Your basic truck stop food. Menu features basic breakfasts and traditional burgers. There aren't many options for vegetarians, that's for sure. Definitely would rather stop somewhere in portland. read more

After eating breakfast here I'm not sure I will ever be satisfied eating anyplace near where I live. The food was incredible and the service was friendly and fast. I had the Prospector which came with biscuits and gravy, eggs, and sausage; and a side order of a chocolate chip pancake. My husband had French toast with this thick wonderful bread. The amount of food was way more than you can eat and the price was really good. Some people have coffee as a wake me up but I drink Dr Pepper as my wake me up and this was the first morning in days that a restaurant even had Dr Pepper, 49ers is the place to go. read more

After my trip to Mt. St. Helen's, I decided to go to this restaurant next to my hotel in Castle Rock Washington. This restaurant is old school, it feels like very 1960's, and it looks like everything is still original. I had fish burger with fries. For the price that I paid, the fish was very thin while the quality of the bun was very subpar. It was just a big white bread bun slightly toasted. The dish also came with soup which tasted like any old canned soup. Service was good and the waitress really wanted us to feel at home. Due to the fact that there are very few restaurants in this area, I had almost no choice but to eat here. read more

Large portions and low prices win the day at Pepers 49er. What they lack in accommodations for larger individuals (the tables are tight in the booths) , they make up for with alert, responsive, friendly service and tastier than average food. Everything feels homemade, which is a plus for me, and tastes delicious. I will definitely be back to try more things. read more
