Updating my review, I visited this week and on my return to Alaska day, I bought 2 dozen tamales to take home. I grabbed the Green chicken chile and cheese and a dozen hatch chile and cheese. I walked up to the store, and ominously they had a sign that said, "Red tamales only". Fortunately for me, they had both red and the sweet tamales, but just no green ones. I was worried that the red ones were going to be spicy, but they weren't at all. Red tamale- The masa is light and moist, with some granularity to it. The red chile pork filling is generously stuffed in the middle. It is tender, with shreds of pork. It is seasoned well with tomato and chile. Sweet tamale- This did not have any filling. Rather, it is a lightly sweetened masa with small raisins and anise. My first bite tasted strongly of anise, but subsequent bites allowed the sweetness to shine through. I liked how the raisins were small so they didn't dominate each bite. I want to come back here to try the champurrado and the green tamales! Note this is a take out place, with no seating. read more

I've been buying Pepe's Tamales going on for 40 years and let me say that I could care less that there other tamale vendors in town. In my house only Pepe's. So to May disappointment this week when I got may 2 red dozen 2 green dozen and was shock to see the my red tamales were a disappointment with only a spoon full of meat at the top end and the rest was masa at $21.99 they should be recopeteado de carne or aleast the Masa covered in red Chile. Every time I am in El Paso this is a must to take home to California. These are the absolute best tamales ever.

One of my favorite spots in El Paso. Kind of a hole in the wall- blink and you'll miss it kind of spots. They only have 4 tamales on the menu- green Chile, red Chile, Chile relleno and a sweet kind dessert one with raisins. All 4 are amazing and would recommend. In my experience the less they have on the menu, the better each individual item ends up being. He also makes them fresh each and everyday! The owner himself is extremely friendly and the recipe is a well kept family secret. There is a lot of history in those food. The price is also very well worth it. I would go take the trip just to talk to him and see what he has to say. I would totally recommend if you are in the area to go and visit this spot. First review for 2024! I was craving Green Chicken Tamales and I just couldn't find them anywhere, but then I remembered this place! This place satisfied my craving and I got my dozen for like 19.99, it's the same price as the Tapatia. I like Pepe's because this is their specialty and not like other places where you have to order ahead of time or sell just during the holidays. These tamales were delicious and very spicy, with the perfect amount of chicken! They also had regular pork and also rajas con queso. I also noticed on the menu they have a tamales special in the morning like from 7 to 10 am and they also sell barbacoa. Service was fast and friendly and there was no waiting in line! I am originally from El Paso but I live in dallas , And by far these are the BEST tamales ever ! and they are big ( good size tamale ) In El Paso there is a big competition when it comes to authentic tamales and in Dallas there's literally no where you can find a good tamales . So everytime I come in town this is my first stop ! Literally ! Even when my grandpa comes down to Dallas for thanksgiving or holidays I always send him money to bring me multiple dozens because they are just so delicious! I crave them ! On thanksgiving I'll be eating these tamales instead of the turkey and big thanksgiving traditional feast the family makes . I'll even hide the tamales to make them last because once people see some Pepe's tamales , they all grab , And they don't just grab one , They grab like 3 at a time . I would highly recommend this place ! Also Jorge who is the beautiful smile you see when you first walk in was literally the nicest most welcoming guy ! He made us feel so special because of the great hospitality he gave us . You definitely don't get people who are this sweet and happy in life in Dallas . We were perhaps the only people to come here for Champurrado instead of tamales. But, the Mexican chocolate drinks were huge and very delicious and the service was even better! My first Yelp review and totally worth it. Pepe's Tamales is where it's AT! I've tried a lot of tamales in El Paso and these are by far my favourites. The pork and red chile is just right. Often I find this variety too salty or too soupy at other places. This one had the perfect ratio of flavours and ingredients. The tamales are fluffy and still maintain that moist density that makes a tamale delicious. What made my taste buds leap with joy, though, was Hatch green chile and cheese tamale. The best I've had, hands down. The cheese was melty and not watery and (again) the ratio of cheese to chile and filling to tamal dough was perfect! The real star, though, is the owner! Really delicious tamales; though could be a little more moist. Would love it if they serve you with some sort of sauce or cheese topping. Not really a dine-in place but there are two tables and two chairs at each table. Cool science in simple decorations. Very straightforward menu. We were road tripping it and stopped in - split half a dozen tamales. They are very filling but you won't feel heavy as a result of eating them- just satisfied. That aspect is awesome! Hot tamale!! I picked up 2 tamales from this place right after eating a massive lunch. They keep it simple here: only 3 flavors on the menu: pork with red chile, chicken with green chile, and sweet with anise and raisin. I thought I'd be too full to eat them after the large meal I'd had, but they smelled so good I had to dig in! I ended up wolfing down both within minutes. They were FANTASTIC! I cannot wait to go back to get more. Both had a great kick, and I particularly loved the chicken with green chile. At only $1.59 per tamale, they make a great snack! But they also have better deals if you order by the dozen or half dozen. I wish I had known about this place earlier because I would have placed orders for more events. Regardless, I will be coming back regularly for a quick snack whenever I am craving something small yet filling and spicy! Also, I paid for 2 tamales with a credit card. My grandmother used to always have their tamales at her home and they still taste just as amazing years later when I started going here. Whenever I come and visit my family back in El Paso my parents are fully aware that I need Pepe's Tamales fully stocked in the fridge. These are some of the most authentic tamales I have come across in multiple cities. Pepe's has provided a solution to the pesky "not enough masa and too little meat". it is like the perfect balance between meat and masa that you will be delighted you bought a dozen (or three) to take home. The flavors and spices in their tamales is like a party in your mouth... seriously! The tamales are so tender and well prepped you will immediately notice the quality of Pepe's. Keep in mind the location is a little tricky but just keep an eye on their location at the shopping center and you'll be good to go. This isn't the place to come and try to make a full meal or even sit down and eat them. They're sole focus is on their tamales and I'm not complaining. As a loyal fan of them for years, I can only wish they would eventually bring business to San Antonio one day! read more
