I was expecting more - both for the price and from previous reviews. I had biscuits and gravy - they were absolutely Grands biscuits - not homemade. The only flavor in the gravy was the black pepper. My husband got the spinach/mushroom omelette which he said was good. He ordered wheat toast and got 1 piece of unbuttered wheat toast. Also asked for a side of sausage and got one patty. The server came quickly at first for drinks, then for order taking and coffee refill, then food delivery. No additional follow-up. The restaurant is clean and interestingly decorated. read more

I chose this place in particular from afar to have lunch as I stopped in town. I arrived during posted hours only to be told that they're closed. The door was open and I was there within the hours of operation. I guess they didn't want to be bothered with cooking anything for me that late in the afternoon - even though they were still open. Don't judge a restaurant by its exterior - while the outside does not look like much (just very plain and even a tad desolate), you are greeted by kind service - and fresh, simple food. We ordered the Chopped Salad as well as an egg dish and were very pleasantly surprised by the tastiness and freshness of all of the food. This place is wonderful! My wife and I stopped here on a cross country drive. We ordered the breakfast sandwich and a spinach and mushroom omelet. Both couldn't be better. Real homemade quality and absolutely delicious. Lovely people, too. The hostess and server was so friendly and helpful. And Dallas, the owner and chef, came out when we were ordering, to answer questions we had about the menu items. Also, there are interesting historic artifacts on the walls and original newspaper front pages including one with the first reports of the sinking of the Titanic. Turns out Dallas is a history buff, as is his father, and was his grandfather. So my wife and I had a very interesting conversation with him. We will definitely make it a point to stop there again next time. The food alone is worth the stop, the conversation is the gravy. Stopped here for a late lunch after a long day of driving from Houston to Balmorhea St Park. We love supporting local businesses and we love restaurants that serve breakfast all day... so we were excited. It didn't disappoint. I had a green chile omelet with hash browns inside that hit the spot. Chicken and waffles were enjoyed by the kids ("that was the best waffle"), though the waffles were a little thin and a little soft for my taste. Bacon was perfectly cooked. Chicken was tasty. Decent coffee number one! Tasty mushroom spinach scrambled eggs and nicely crisp hash browns. The sweet cream pancake is SWEET. The waiter didn't make it to work but our service was still prompt and cheerful. It was worth the couple of extra turns to fortify us before we hit the road again. Decided to make a quick stop in Fort Stockton and found this restaurant while making my drive through town. Fort Stockton is an easy town to drive around and miss, but seems they have a handful of small mom and pop restaurants worth giving a shot. This is a neat little hole in the wall bar and grill for the in town folks. The restaurant was a bit dark and could have used a little more cleaning and a face lift. They offered corn hole in the courtyard attached to the restaurant which I am sure is enjoyed in the evenings when it cools down. I originally ordered the Fried Chicken meal, but they were out of that option. I then defaulted to trying the Country Fried Steak. I thought the steak was breaded and fried pretty well and the gravy had a decent flavor. The potatoes disappointed and they didn't appear to be fresh. I ate an early lunch, so perhaps they were prepped previously and sat in a heating pan a bit too long. I'd maybe give this place another chance, but would try other local spots first. read more

So i been stoping at this place for years since I moved to El Paso when I travel to Houston. They had the best Chicken Fried Steak and Fried Mushrooms on the road. But it's been about 18 months or so since I been and the menu has been changed, lots of items are now gone. The fried catfish and shrimp, the Migas at breakfast, and serving sizes have been cut in half, literally. When I was driving thru and stopped by On a recent Saturday mid day afternoon, Baskets of whole fried mushrooms I used to get for about $8.99 are now half full baskets of cut in half mushrooms. But I tried another order since the now small amount of mushrooms left me still wanting ...I also ordered the Texas Size Cheese Sticks. Now that was amazing, big huge sticks of crispy, melty cheese with ranch for dipping, that was a real winner . I also tried something different for my entre', I got the grilled pork chops. So the were grilled way to long on one side, to point of being hard. Then the other side, the presentation side was loaded in coarse Ground Pepper and Garlic. I tried to eat it but it was too much, I had to scrape it off. And wipe the chops. I like garlic, I add it to many foods I prepare but this was over board. And then the chops that were killed. No juicy ness at all. Just the pepper and a little salt and a quick grill fry on each side would have been plenty. The iced tea was on point. The sides were ok, but forgettable compared to previous visits over the years. I had a small side salad which I loved, and their Ranch is really good. I was sat on the side in what always used to be the Loud Bar that opened at night but apparently it's now a dining room and the 50's vibe dining room is now closed during the day, chairs set up on tables. Only 1 waitperson, and only one other gentleman having a burger when I arrived, but that quickly turned into a full dining room and she was doing everything. The menu said to ask about their homemade desserts but they were all sold out on a Saturday afternoon save for 2 thin slices of pecan pie wrapped in Saran wrap in a case in the lobby area. I decided to skip that ... Looked as if it had been there a while ... All in all maybe if I had had then Chicken fried Steak again maybe the meal would have been better? But it was just a bit or miss on the meal that day... And overall down compared to past visits. read more

This os a nice little hole in the wall. I got the chicken fried steak with potatoes, toast, and two sunny side eggs. The eggs were typical eggs, as expected. The potatoes were ok, feel like they weren't exactly fresh, but were good paired with the spicy ketchup they had. The country fried steak was amazing, perfectly cooked and the thick gravy really topped it off. It really saved the rating. The wait staff was very confused, I'm guessing she was a new waitress. Floors were pretty sticky, but overall ambiance was pretty cool, there is a small outdoor smoking area with corn hole. Been going for years and food is not always on point, being a small town not too many options. However, they had a girl working that look like she was thrown into waitressing, bad service. People sat behind us about 15mins after we did, they got checked on several time and got their food way before us. When the food came eggs were way over cooked, sausages were so dry they were grainy, what can I say about the pancakes? They looked kinda weird, really flat, one bite and I understood why, old mix and sour, I think it's time for the health inspector to do a surprise visit. Walking out I glanced towards the kitchen and I saw a big bucket of waffle/pancake mix with no lid a pouring cup next too it and it look old. I have worked alot in fast food and restraunts to know bad service and old food. Not pleasant for sure. Can't give zero stars read more

A good mid-stopping point if your on I-10. It broke up our 8hr drive. Nothing in between. We needed dinner and this place didn't disappoint! I love a good home cooked meal and this place has it. I'm all about a chicken fried steak. It was amazing! I got mash potatoes and macaroni as my sides. The mash potatoes... yum! The macaroni was great too. All great sized portions. I'm a half sweet/unsweetened tea kinda person (they put plenty of ice so you don't have to worry about drinking your tea lukewarm). Our server tonight was Evangelina with great hospitality. It's clean, spacious, large flatscreens if you want to watch news or football. Overall, it'll be my go to when passing through to San Antonio. read more

It's a decent small town cafe that just happens to serve breakfast all day, eray day! We were seated right away. The service was cordial, but they were a tad on the slow side bringing the food out. They have a ginormous menu with many options. I had the Veggie Salad - chopped greens with a mix of grilled zucchini, carrots, onions, cucumber, and green beans served in a homemade tortilla shell. It was quite tasty and very filling. $9.99 The French Toast Combo - two pieces of "Texas" toast (methinks not - look at the picture - it's Yankee sized toast), two eggs, and choice of bacon, sausage, or ham - $11.99. That seems pricey for a simple breakfast plate in a small town cafe. They have a full bar, but we had a ways to drive still, so we didn't imbibe. Also has a small outdoor patio seating area. If you're looking for a local joint to try out, give them a try. Just be prepared for the service to be a bit slow. read more

Not many places to eat between El Paso and Fort Stockton, but very happy we stopped here. Plenty of parking when towing a boat behind a cab over camper. Easy access to and from the Highway. It's an older diner but the food and service were perfect. Not too crowded or loud, so it was a nice way to enjoy our meals. We both had iced teas - 1 regular and 1 sweetened (not too sweet). He had the Green Chile omelet which had moist chicken, onions, bell peppers, green chiles and hash browns on the inside, and melted pepper Jack cheese on top. Also came with a side of red salsa. I had the Chicken and Waffle. It was a nice fluffy Belgian Waffle flavored with vanilla. It came with 3 crispy and tender Chicken Strips. I had dinner here last night while passing thru. Actually Yelp helped me picked this spot. There was a good sized crowd inside when I walked in at about 7 p.m. Some people were on the right side of the restaurant where the dinning area is and others were on the left side where the bar area is with a serving bar and then other rooms with tables and several TV's on the wall. I needed seafood so I ordered the lemon pepper grilled fish with sides of grilled vegetables and green beans. My food was ready in less than 15 minutes. The fish filet was on top of a bed of brown rice. The fish was good but it could have used a little bit more lemon better to enhance the flavor. It was still ok though. The green beans were very good. Loved the flavor as it reminded me of home southern cooking. The grilled veggies were way over seasoned with coarse ground pepper. Seriously, it was enough seasoning for two more orders. The meal was filling and priced at $11.95. Of the 3 items on my plate, one was very good, one was ok and the last one was not good. I will still give a 3 to this restaurant hoping the overseasoning was a one off. I could tell that this is a popular restaurant with the locals. read more

Speed of service. Britney was trying and working a whole side by herself but I've got to believe it doesn't take 28 min to cook 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon and a waffle (Hogs n Meat). The place only had 5 parties of two at five tables. Waffle was perfect! (Thank you!) Bacon was so tough I could barely chew it. Eggs were supposed to be over-medium and they came out over-easy. I haven't been to FS in years, but since my mothers recent passing, I will have to come back more frequently. I can assure you, I will hope and pray this place stays open and has the same staff. The ambiance was so cute! And kudos on the musical playlist! The food was delicious (I had chicken n waffles) which were fantastic. The food could absolutely stand up against elevated brunch spots I am used to in San Antonio and Austin and that's a fact. My husband and I joked with our poor waitress about how they must have had call ins on Mother's Day, since they were so short staffed. We were right!! But our waitress and one other waitress kept their composure even though some folks behind us were being jerks. I noticed that patrons would come in, wait two minutes and leave. One couple ordered their food, and since it wasn't magically bestowed upon them within the microwave pizza time constraints they are used to, they left. Unfortunately, some people do not know how to slow down, and appreciate anything or anyone, but we assured our gal her hard work was not going unnoticed.
