I first tried this in the Philippines and I really enjoyed it, so when I found out this was open in Milpitas I had to go try it! We came one weekend during the holidays and it wasn't too busy. It was smaller than I expected, but the service was pretty quick. The menu wasn't very clear because it didn't explain what kind of things came with the order, so I had to ask (not a big deal). I got #1 and my bf got #5, both with egg (check in on Yelp for a free egg!) We also got complimentary soup, woo for free things! Although it took some time for the waiter to get to us for our orders, we received regular service once our food came out. Was a bit under-whelmed by this place. The presentation of the food was nice since everything came on a hot sizzling plate, but honestly, everything cooled down really fast. For all the plates, it was hard to mix all the ingredients together and it was somewhat of a disappointment because the proportion of rice to meat was off. There was definitely more rice than meat.. Also, the plates were somewhat flavorless, so you definitely have to add more sauce. I personally got the Salmon plate, which was okay, but would not order again. FINALLY YELP WAITLIST EXISTS FOR PEPPER LUMCH!!! Honestly it was so exciting for them to finally have this feature. My friend was visiting from Socal and I recommended for us to try Pepper Lunch because it's honestly a must. I put my name on the waitlist, and drove straight there. Luckily when I arrived, I had to wait 5 minutes max before getting called. It's super convenient and I didn't have to wait that long. They've finally changed their seating arrangements to make it easy for the staff to deliver the hot plates and for people to pass through. Thank goodness. I used to feel like their old layout was super dangerous and difficult to pass through especially with the stone plates. We ordered pretty quickly and got our foods pretty quickly too. GARLIC BUTTER. After waiting years to try this place, I finally made it. My experience was a good one. Pepper Lunch is based on raw meat cooking on a hot skillet. I ordered the Beef Yakisoba which I also enjoyed. They aren't serving any glasses of water due to the water shortage, but they have bottled water. Their customer service was lacking. The staff were a bit aloof and weren't really helpful. I saw guests seated next to us asking questions and the server seemed taken aback, even though their questions were fairly straight-forward. They have bottles of Teriyaki sauce and what they said was a Shoyu garlic sauce. The Teriyaki sauce was good, but the Shoyu garlic sauce didn't have any garlic flavor. Few years later, I'm updating my review. Boy was my 1st review wrong. My kids love this place and so do I! Both kids really learned to use chopsticks here, especially when they are picking the last grains of rice from their plates. 1st time back since the pandemic and I'm so glad that nothing really has changed. Yes, the decor could use a refesh, but that's not what people come here for. They do have new menus and some of the OG staff that has worked here for years were not here when we visited. But still the staff was fast and constantly checking if we needed anything. Indoor seating when we visited is about 50% of pre-pandemic. Sadly no more online reservation system, guessing that's a result of less indining traffic, but they still get busy and there was a line outside when we left. Reading my old review I do want to say that you should not come hear with your best clothes. The best thing about sizzling plates is how they cook in front of you. Despite the 3.5 star yelp average, this place really is worth a try at least once. I'm updating my review because what this one waiter explained to me actually changed my life. I do usually randomly use the sauces provided at the table, but apparently there's an ideal way to do it: Garlic butter - get it on the side. Take half with your knife and spread it evenly on all your meat. Flip all meat over, repeat with other half of garlic butter on new top side of meat. Take soy sauce looking bottle and pour it over noodles. Take the brown squeeze bottle and squeeze over meat and noodles. Season with the powder red spicy sauce. Mix, repeat. It was literally amazing with this combo - the waiter was telling me that most people who are disappointed on Yelp or who are dissatisfied usually say "it has no flavor, not enough seasoning." WELL SURPRISE SURPRISE - they purposely make it without tons of seasoning because you're actually supposed to do that step yourself, and design it to your liking. People say "it's bland and boring" - it's because you're not using the right combo of stuff (LIKE ARE YOU ORDERING GARLIC BUTTER ON THE SIDE?? YOU MUST) If you and your friends come before 5:30pm waiting for dinner, do yourself and everyone a favor by forming an organized line (I really think they should make a sign on the front door that says FORM A LINE) because sometimes if the first few people who arrive don't form a line, as soon as the doors open people just descend upon the entrance in this haphazard way that is stressful for the workers and for your whole party (and it seems way more fair to form a line anyway) - sometimes I come and people are smart and have formed a line, sometimes I come and people are standing around in groups and that isn't helpful for anyone. Is Pepper Lunch under new management? Or are the sauces driving them out of business? I've been coming here for years and there was always this guy working who was super nice - really just the best customer service. It was a huge reason why we kept coming back. We came to pick up our take-out; the place seemed pretty busy. When we asked for sauce (there were none in the bag) - the lady was very unhappy with us. We always got one garlic sauce and one teriyaki with each order before (we all ordered udon). She begrudgingly gave us only the teriyaki sauce and lectured about how next time we would need to pay 50 cents per sauce...what? It was not even worth bothering for the garlic sauce and I didn't have quarters on me for their cash policy. Spending $60, you would think she wouldn't be so uptight about the sauce - or if they are charging for sauce now, just let us know. The sizzling plates here are really tasty and have large portions. The beef was a little dry and bland but besides that the plates are pretty good. There's a bunch of toppings you can add on as well which would probably make the plate more tasty. My group of friends enjoy this place so much that we're here once a week at minimum( one time we went 3x...) and that's because they usually have great food at cheap prices and servers often are on top of things. Yes I hate the wait, usually always being a minimum of 30-40 minutes especially since the Yelp online waitlist is 99% of the time closed so you can't check in until you get there. However they've always been great in their customer service even though they often only have 1-2 people for all the tables which it's quite easy to see all the chaos. Regardless of who's working, they're always checking in and making sure we have everything we need and that we're fine. For food, can't really go wrong with any of their popular ones but I love their #6( curry with rice) as it's so good and actually helps makes the dish even hotter(temperature) which is how Pepper Lunch should be enjoyed; sure all their dishes come out steaming but it's different when you can add some delicious curry that adds so much flavor. Overall a really good place, wish it was closer to San Jose but their prices, customer service and ease of parking has me coming back for more. read more

The food is just sad :( We ordered a fried shrimp for $6 and there's only three pieces. One shrimp for $2? It better be a great shrimp and unfortunately, it was not that great. We also ordered the sizzling beef which I think was even worse. I had to add soooo much sauce for it to taste a little bit better. The portion was a lot though that made it quite hard for me to mix the food. *For future reference, I think you guys should put the plastic circle surrounding the sizzling plate (if the restaurant is reading this). In the end, I did not finish my meal since I thought it was a waste of my calories intake :( I gave two stars for a great service. I've always been aware of Pepper Lunch since it was popular during my high school days. I'm familiar with this type of dining experience (Sizzling Lunch), so I thought I should give this place a try. I understand that the waiters may have wanted to seat customers as quickly as possible since I came during the dinner rush, but I felt uncomfortable with the seating arrangement. The tables are close together; we were squished into a corner and had to ask our neighboring table if they could rearrange their chairs so that the waiters could reach us. We got the Beef Pepper Udon, Curry Beef Pepper Udon, and Beef Yakisoba. Every dish just tasted buttery and we had to continuously add sauces to make up for the lack of flavor. I also thought that the dishes would come with paper collars, but maybe I confused this expectation with my experience from Sizzling Lunch. I don't see myself coming back here again. read more
