Places like this can only exist in major Viet diasporas like Houston (#1) where a space has been transformed into a place that operates like a sports bar, a lounge, a family destination, and a Vietnamese pub menu that all at the same time. This phenomenon deserves its own category and name (#2) but is more common than one might think. As noted earlier, this place is enormous. It might not look like much from the outside, but the place is sprawling with a copious amount of chairs and tables of various sizes, along with an outdoor area that really add to the overall feel of the place. There is a large bar with a several bartenders, TVs and projection screens with sports and music, and bathrooms that reek of desperation. (#3) The food skews heavily Viet but I was somewhat surprised at how legit the pho and banh mi was, at least for a bar. They also have a number of plates for mi xao (stir fried rice noodles), com (rice plates), lau (hot pot), sinh to (smoothies), and dedicated sections for chim cut (quail) and de (goat). I was also taken aback by the prices, where banh mi is $5 and pho is $11 (except the $13 dac biet) and coffee is $4.99. Booze was also in the same realm as cocktails and beers varied between $3-9. Nothing about the food that I was able to sample was destination worthy, but I'm not mad at it. Affordable variety goes a long way. If there was any real drag, it's the inconsistent service. The staff can be a little too lax at times, where they're slow to bring things out and somewhat inattentive. Viet is the preferred language naturally and parking is either on the street or in the lot directly across the street. A good time can be had here, which I would suggest for a large group. There are heaps of local families that are coming in for a feast and always a small number of Viet uncles going hard on the Heineken while watching sports on TV. The restaurant is located near EaDo and is easy to find. It's in a small strip of businesses so parking can be tight when it's busy. We came with about 30 minutes left for breakfast before they rolled out their lunch menu. There was a few tables of people enjoying their breakfast, but the place got really busy about an hour into lunch. Customer service was great. I needed help making some ordering decisions and the staff steered me in the right direction. I specifically came for breakfast. I started off with an iced Horchata Latte. This drink was excellent. You got all the flavors of a traditional horchata with the cinnamon while still having the coffee flavor present. It was a very well balanced drink. For my entree I went with their popular chilaquiles. They said this is their number one seller for breakfast and I could totally see why. I went with the red chile salsa for the spicy version, but you can also get it with a salsa verde. It comes with black beans, fried egg (you can request a different cook if you desire), crema, queso fresco and green onions. You can add a protein for an additional charge. I added chorizo to mine. Chilaquiles is not something I ever order but I had to try it here. I am so glad I went out of my comfort zone because this dish was amazing. Now I've had bites here and there of chilaquiles but was never blown away, hence me not ordering it. The chips were coated throughout and kept it's crunch through the whole meal. All the components of the dish worked in perfect harmony. I liked mine with the chorizo addition. The egg was nice and runny and I would consider adding another egg next time. It was a generous portion and a heavy meal, but I powered through the whole thing because it was so good. They had a nice display of baked goods and I could not pass up the pretty cinnamon roll. I got the last one and it looked very promising. It ended up being just ok. They served it room temp so it ate very dry. It would have been good if it was heated up and gooey. I like this because I could easily forget to scan my member number. This person takes my phone number and lets me know my point balance which is also nice. There are nuts, seeds, and bacon near the soup... you can put this in your salad too. I get so many components I don't feel the need to add a protein. Meanwhile, my 100% DISABLED VETERAN husband had to try to change it himself in 90 degree heat. When I called Habib to cancel, he didn't seem to care about the lack of response time and just said, "Sounds good." This roadside assistance request was made at 12:16 PM and it was nearly 4 PM when we canceled. I don't know why a restaurant person is out changing tires for USAA, but I hope you never rely on him for roadside assistance. Hopefully his food is better than his roadside service. A complaint has been lodged through USAA as well.
