The ribs are great - perfectly tender (nice bite without falling off the bone) and a slightly sweet rub. Skip the sauce. The meat is good and doesn't need it. The sauce is sweet and smoky and will overpower the meat. Or - be weird like me and mix a little in your potato salad. It's good for that. Maybe get a few pickles, onions, or jalapeños from the condiment bar to eat with your brisket, but don't ruin it with the sauce. Just enjoy good, slightly smoky meat.

There is only one place in the Houston area that I will pay for BBQ, and that is Grand Prize BBQ on 225 and Preston. Originally I fell in love with this place in Texas City, and was driving there to get my fix. Now they have one close to home, and I have put on 25 lbs, in just under a year! Everything went well until I got my plate. I ordered the two meat brisket and sausage, potato salad, and fried okra. The portion was huge-- enough for three people -- but I couldn't enjoy it. The brisket should have been the star, but it tasted like was baked too long in an oven an oven a day or two ago. There was no smoke flavor, and the meat just fell apart. I could have eaten it with a spoon. It was tender, sure, but anybody can do that if you cook it/rest it long enough. The flavor just wasn't there. I'm not sure whether they make their sausage or get it from somewhere outside, but it seemed to be quality stuff before they cooked it. It was coarse ground like I like it with good seasoning. But where was the smoke? The sausage honestly looked and tasted like it was sliced and boiled. I was shocked. The potato salad tasted good, but the texture was all wrong. Everything was chopped up small like it was done in the food processor and there was no love in it. Fried okra is hard to get wrong, but there was nothing particularly right about it either. I was so suspicious about the lack of flavor in my meat that I drove around the back parking lot when we left. There were several racks of neatly stacked firewood, but it was all filled up to the top. Either it had just been delivered, or it's not getting used. I suspect the latter. This is Texas. If you're gonna keep the doors open at a barbecue joint, you have to do better. I love coming to your restaurant, and I hope you get things figured out.
