We needed an A/C system to replace a pair of leaky, ailing swamp coolers on our 2,600 sq ft single level home in Sonora, CA. It has been a crazy hot summer, and those poor old swamp coolers were not cutting it. We had a few HVAC companies come out and give us estimates on installing a total A/C system in our home. Due to the vast size of the home, and the poor air flow and minimal insulation in our ceiling, we knew we would be wasting a lot of money to try to cool the entire house when in reality we only needed certain areas of the home cooled at any one time. We discovered mini-splits by accident on line, and were delighted to find a local company who installed them. From the first call to Performance Based Heating and Air, we dealt with the company owner, Jacob. He came out to our place, and did a comprehensive assessment of our home and needs, and recommended a total of five Mitsubishi Mini-Splits and a 5 ton condenser. Personally, I was skeptical that just five of those units could efficiently cool a house of that size. We took a chance and signed up, because the product truly seemed to be the most economical and effective way to cool our home. Jacob described exactly how and where everything would be installed - Everything was done on time and looked exactly how we pictured it. We received prompt notifications when the job began and ended. The installation was top quality (thank you Jared!) and we very were impressed by how smoothly everything went (thank you Rebecca!). Jacob came out after the job was done and went over the best settings for our home - if you think blasting the lowest settings and they highest fan speed is the way to go (like we did), you would be wrong. After Jacob changed them to the proper settings, I cannot believe how efficient these mini-splits are! This weekend the temperature topped out at 105 at our house. Inside was an arctic wonderland. I actually had to the mini-splits down because I was shivering under two blankets and a sweater it was so cold in my house! Just incredible! We've had them out twice. Once last January (2016), and once a week ago (October 2016). Needless to say, we know where we'll be going for all of our HVAC needs! Last January, we had them out to check out an old unit (30+ years!) at our house. They saw how old it was, but still took it apart to find out what was wrong and told us that they might be able to fix it if we wanted, but some of the parts might be hard to get. Alternatively, they could replace it. Not only did they beat the big box on the price point, but the quality and speed of their work was excellent! Less than a week after diagnosing our unit as just about dead, they were out fabricating sheet metal, getting the new unit in and hauling off the old unit. We were able to go to sleep that night with sweet heat flowing through our house once again! That brings us to this October. We wanted to get our mini-split (installed by the previous owners) checked as it had started leaking water, as well as getting the other systems checked out before winter really kicked in. They took a look at the mini-split and almost immediately diagnosed the issue. After looking at our ducts, they recommended we get them replaced soon - either now, or in a few months. During the entire process, they told us pros and cons to getting things done or waiting. Well, we said "go for it" and a week later they were out replacing ducts and fixing the mini-split. Needless to say, this is the best our system has performed since we moved in 2.5 years ago! Both experiences with them have been extremely positive. They act professionally, and with class. After having alot of trouble with our heater during the winter, our AC decided to go out the day before we were supposed to hit our first 95 degrees+ days of the summer! The unit was 35 years old so we figured it would have to be replaced at this point. Called 3 places, and he was the one that actually answered his phone and said he would be out first thing in the morning. He arrived on time and when he finished looking over the unit, considering the age and the fact that the repairs would cost as much as a new unit, we decided to order a new one. He was very upfront about the cost to fix it and to replace it. I thought we would be stuck without a AC unit for a couple weeks at least, but he came out on a Tuesday and he and his brother were back on Thursday first thing in the morning installing it. When something unforeseen came up (due to the previous installation of the old unit), and the time was going to take longer than expected, they both stayed after it was dark using headlights and outdoor lighting till the job was done...I was beyond impressed!!! We have been using the AC all summer now and it works great! Best part is that due to the fact that our new one is much more energy efficient than our old one, even our PG&E bill is lower than it normally would be in Summer. I learned about them from a friends recommendation (they were also 100% thrilled with them) and I would recommend them to anyone that asks and will only be using Perfomance-Based Heating and Air for any further maintenance and repairs for our AC/Heating Unit. read more

Our HVAC stopped working going into a weekend stretch of 108/109º! I was incredibly grateful that Jacob and team was able to come the day I called, and not only that, but they were able to come much earlier than expected and called first to confirm that was OK (which, of course it was!). They were efficient, professional, clearly communicating and explaining what the problem was. They got it back up and running however our unit is very old and had not had any maintenance done in the years we've lived here. He quoted and explained options for what other issues it had as to why it wasn't running efficiently and why it wasn't blowing air as cold as it could. He showed me photos of the problems since it's on our roof, which I appreciated. I approved the ballpark range to do the maintenance, and they were able to do it right then which was incredible. A short while later, we had noticeably colder air blowing through our HVAC vents, and a stronger force of air. The additional maintenance he did came in under the ballpark range he quoted while still accomplishing all the maintenance needed. After a week of use so far, our house has been nicely chilled in a way it hadn't ever before, and has been running perfectly. Like most cabins built in the late 1970s, our cabin relied on a wood burning stove and electric wall heaters for heat. There was no central heating system and certainly no air conditioning. We eventually changed the wood burning stove over to a propane unit with a thermostat which helped, but the upstairs bedrooms would remain cold in the winter and unbearably hot during the summer. Having to run the electric wall heaters just to keep the cabin comfortable was getting expensive. Last summer was the last straw so to speak. We needed to do something to make the cabin more comfortable for ourselves and our guests. Enter Jacob from Performance Based Heating and Air. We arrived home after being out of town for several days, on a Saturday with a predicted high of 102, to find that our air conditioner was no longer pushing air through the vents. At all. I picked up the phone and called Central, with whom we had done business in the past. An exchange answered the phone and put me on hold for several minutes. While I was on hold, I was browsing the ads in the yellow pages (yes, an actual phone book!) and came across the ad for Performance. We'd been on the road for about 12 hours and I was tired and warm. Picked up the phone and gave this company a call instead. It was around 12:30 PM. Jacob picked up the phone before it had rung once, told me that he'd just had a cancellation, and that he could be out by 2. He actually arrived 45 minutes early, apologizing while we celebrated his arrival. Professional, clean, courteous - he came in, immediately diagnosed the problem, and even gave us the option of saving some money by doing part of the repair / cleaning on our own. A/C works better than it has in months. Prices were reasonable. Jacob came to our vacation home when we were available, to look at the needs and give us an estimate. We had a two story place which had central propane but ducting was only put in the down stairs for some reason and though high efficiency furnace, it did not have A/C. After our first summer finding a couple months where it wasn't comfortable and when cold, the upper bedrooms were cold, so we needed to add both. The mini split seemed the best solution to provide both, though I was expecting a lower price but after considering what it would take to add to the existing system, likely would have been just as much and less efficient. Chance and Jared got there when planned and worked through the day and into the evening to finish, though by then it was cold and dark. I would have liked to have the line sets placed against the attic wall rather than run directly across the attic joists to make it easier to move around in my VERY TALL attic space. I am also concerned that the wall unit hook ups that were on the outside of the house, may not have gotten insulated as well as they should. They are only 10-12 inches long so may not affect efficiency, but concerns me that this may be a Heat and Cold loss area. read more

Jacob is AWESOME. I live out of state and had to find a HVAC company I could trust. I needed to have them go to my inlaws house. They are elderly and was told by two companies they need a new A/C unit at a cost of $8000.00 to $9000.00. I called Performance Based H/A and Jacob answered the phone. At 5pm yesterday our AC started to smoke and you could smell something burning. After calling a few other companies only to get an answering machine, we called Jacob at Performance Based Heating and Air. He said that he would finish the job he was on and come down ASAP. He showed up within an hour and quickly went to work. Within a short time he found problem and had the necessary parts to fix the problem in his van so that our A/C would be safe an operational again. He test ran the A/C to verify that there were no other issues and he was happy to explain his findings and repair procedures. Although I would have paid almost anything to have the A/C fixed so quickly he was extremely reasonable and his professional, positive, helpful attitude was an added bonus. Normally I throw away the advertising magnets and cards that contractors provide but this time I promptly put his magnet on my refrigerator so that I can refer him to everyone I know that needs HVAC work done. Our call was answered immediately and he was able to come out to our house for an estimate within the week we called. He arrived promptly on the scheduled time and was able to answer all of our questions. This is long over due. Jacob came over to look over my heating needs at my cabin in Dorrington Friday after thanksgiving. He gave me a price there on the spot. I did my due diligence and got a few more estimates. I decided to go with Jacob. We was not the lowest price but, I had a better connection with him when we met. We had some weather delays in starting the project, the big storm in February set us back a few weeks. On the final day of their install, Jacob called me and said that we was not happy with the heat distribution in the family room. He said that he would be back out in a few weeks to take care of the issue. He installed a diverter to get more air to the family room and put in larger registers. That did the trick. He did a nice job in cleaning up and also worked on the wood ceiling where he installed the registers to fixture the wood splinters. Jacob used a combination of common sense and electronic monitoring to figure out that a 15 year old AC system was not repairable. He tried his best and replaced parts that he suspected might be causing the issue. His knowledge such as "This system uses R-22, which will no longer be available in 2 years" helped me decide to replace the unit with a newer, more efficient system - that uses current refrigerant. By the time he left, he had figured out how to get the install scheduled in a timely manner, although he's pretty booked up at the moment. Jacob's crew installed a new AC system (both outside and inside) which now works great! The crew included his brother and two other techs that worked efficiently and effectively. Their only issue was that Jacob is too cheap to buy them walkie-talkies! They tested their connections with both pressure and vacuum to make sure there would not be any issues. read more

This has been one stellar experience. Jakob came out to check on our Furnace unit, which pretty much went offline during the end of the last winter season. Another firm, who already tried to "fix" it, was not up to the job and ended up installing parts which were not needed (450$) ... but still left me with a none working HVAC unit. Jakob took a detailed approach, eliminating one possible cause after the other until we figured, it might actually be the Thermostat (new). Not just did he explain every single step of the process to me, he also assisted in talking to Emerson who promptly mailed me a replacement unit without further questioning (Received it today/2 days after the call). Our swamp cooler has been pumping the poor air quality from all the fires way too many summers so we opted to look into getting some AC. Jacob came out and gave me the best option for my home which was the split duct system by Mitsubishi. He was able to give me a quote on the spot which was amazingly reasonable, and I was pleased to see numbers then and there to help me make a decision! Jared, Chance, and James at Performance Heating and Air installed a Mitsubishi ductless mini split system in our cabin just before Thanksgiving. My husband and I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. They showed up when planned and did quality work. The install was clean, quick, and professional. The system we got is incredibly quiet and, so far, energy efficient. We used to rely on a propane heater that was costing us up to $400 a month to run during the winter. Using this system, we're already saving hundreds each month on heating our house. They also offer some great financing options, as we couldn't afford the entire purchase in one immediate sum. Jacob came to our Cabin right on time in Pinecrest yesterday. We had many "experts" previously try to fix our furnace , with no permanent solution. However, Jacob changed all that. Jacob spent the time required to figure out what was wrong, communicating with us all through the process. And he did a lot more than just fix the problem, also recalibraing the furnace so it ran more efficiently too. We were so pleased with Jacob, and his professionalism, that I had to give this review.
