I hadn't upgraded my eyewear in years and I was long overdue. After moving to PC and finding that Perkins had such a stellar rating I decided to give them a go. I love to support local and a bonus that they accept VSP. I set up an appt for an eye exam and was scheduled for the following week. I wasn't sure if I'd find frames I liked but figured I'd check out the selection and then maybe come back later. Upon first glance (even with my poor eyesight) I could see that the office was super cool. During my exam Dr Perkins was very thorough in making sure that my Rx would be perfect for me. I was very comfortable with the exam and after getting my eyes dilated I ended up there for a while. The girl at the front showed me all the different brands they carry and picked out some that fit my face well. After reviewing my insurance they were very upfront about pricing and what my share would be. I was tempted to come back later with a friend but was having a hard time walking away. I appreciate their attention to detail and service without being pushy or trying to hard sell me on something that might not be right. It's difficult picking out glasses on your own but I felt good about my choice and ponied up for a pair of frames by 141. They use a similar business model to Tom's Shoes offering a pair to those in need for every pair purchased. Because it had been so long since getting a new pair, I splurged a bit on the coatings and type of lense. After all was done I ended up at about $300 out of pocket (including the exam) which I thought was pretty reasonable compared to past experience. I picked up my new glasses and Dr Perkins himself gave me a custom fitting before sending me on my way. He also had a goody bag with a lense cloth and a Perkins chocolate bar (nice touch) to take with me. I must say I love the look of my new glasses and how lightweight they are on my face. I can definitely say I'll continue seeing Dr Perkins for my eye care needs. read more

Written on Nov 7th: Since I have moved here I have yet to find a new optometrist and was hoping that Perkins would be the place. They are very friendly and have a relaxing decorated office in Park Circle. Dr Perkins and the staff were friendly and professional. The office is decorated to give a nice relaxing mood. I have to say I was a little disappointed in the amount of glass frames for selection. Many are ,also, of the same style and I almost didn't find anything I was happy with. I did opt for something a out of my comfort zone. I do feel that the associates were still in the learning phase of the job and was not able to give me great suggestions based on experience of what looks good on different faces and colors. Everyone has to learn sometime. I was most disappointed when I was checking out I was not offered a receipt with the breakdown of charges but most importantly was charged $39 that I found was REQUIRED to have a pic your eyes instead of the older way of dilating your eyes to see the health of the back of your eyes. If I was informed ahead of time I might have decided to go ahead with it but I believe a customer needs to be informed of anything that would be considered 'out of the normal charges. I honestly believe this should have been brought to my attention when making my appointment. What if I decided I was not able to afford extra charges or did not want to pay it, I would have had to leave and start from scratch and find another Dr and wait for another appointment. I will say that when I showed my dissatisfaction I was offered a refund of this charge and they apologized. I did appreciate that greatly. Written on Dec 2nd: WOW! I wrote all of the above right after I left having my exam and picking out the glasses. I certainly am changing the number of stars from a 4 down to a 2. I went in to pick up my glasses today and left without them and a refund. The associate was helping get them fit correctly on my face by adjusting them. She was doing small changes at a time so it was taking a few times which is fine. Out of the blue Dr Perkins decided to come and take over with the adjustment. I felt they were sitting low and my eyes were at the very top half of the lenses. He told me that is the way they will sit on my face and that is correct because I have a narrow nose bridge. He, also, stated that all of the glasses in his store would do the same. I explained I have yet to ever have a problem finding glasses that i am happy with to fit my narrow nose bridge (in the over 30 years of wearing glasses) and that if none of these will fit how I would like I shouldn't have gotten my glasses here. He said "I am the professional " and he knows how glasses are going to fit my face. So I let him know with the attitude I was getting from him that maybe I will not be taking these home and I will go somewhere else and he stormed off talking to himself in the back office. He returned to the front again told me that I was supposed to call my insurance to get the refund for the insurance. Not sure how that would have worked out since I am not the one refunding the money to them. I let him know that was their job. So very disappointed how this ended. The girls are very polite and patient. Just wished the whole interaction would have been the same. read more

I highly recommend Perkins! I am not a fan, AT ALL, of things being around, near, in, or close to my eyes, so of course I was gifted with poor vision. That being said, from the time I walked in to now, I felt very at ease with Dr. Perkins. While I didn't love the exam because, well, I'm me, I did love how thoroughly he explained everything. I even let him fight to put in some eye drops - and that's saying something! Went here to get contacts, ran out of my dailies. I was happy to support a local business but am overall disappointed about what happened. Everyone was really nice but Dr. Pernell gave me the wrong prescription, bumped me up to a 5.25 in one eye when I am actually the same in both. For about a year now I have been wearing the contacts he gave me, even though I could not really focus on things up close, because he told me that my "dominant" eye had to learn to be dominant again? I've been wearing glasses and contacts for years and have NEVER heard anything about dominant and recessive eyes. I just recently went to another eye doctor and they told me that 5.25 is way too strong for my right eye. Also, dominant and recessive eyes are only taken into consideration when you're older, I am 22. I don't usually leave a negative review and maybe they specialize in glasses or something. However, I have been dealing with headaches and feel that I was screwed over. I felt that the exam was rushed and I didn't do any of the stuff I had done at other exams. When I first put the contacts in, Dr. Pernell told me to "keep blinking" when I said that I could not focus, LOL. I hope that my experience is an outlier, it seems so because of the mostly good reviews, but keep in mind, I went in for contacts, not glasses. If you are looking to get an exam for contacts, I would go somewhere else. read more

The service is amazing!!! The people there are really professional and light spirit the whole building is filled up with good vibes. Bottom line: If you're going anywhere else for eye care, you're cheating yourself. Dr. Perkins is THE BEST. He gives the best, most thorough eye exam I've ever had. He helps you pick out the best frames for your face (he has excellent taste). He fits them to you himself. And, most importantly, it's obvious that he really, really cares about what he's doing and takes enormous pride in his work and getting you the best glasses/vision possible. And if you have an issue with your glasses (e.g. your bad, bad dog chewed them up) he does everything he can to get them fixed ASAP. If you read my reviews you know that I am a big supporter of local businesses. Dr. Perkins is wonderful! He is so professional, thorough, kind and patient. I say patient because when I went in I wanted to try contacts for the first time. He took his time coaching me and making sure I knew all the proper procedures for taking them in, out, and hygiene. I was also able to try a few brands out until I found one that was the most comfortable. Eric at the front desk is also super nice and very helpful. He was very thorough when checking my insurance and going through what they covered with me. They helped me with ordering new glasses as well. I love the style selection! With their help I was able to quickly find the right frame for my face. When my glasses arrived Dr. Perkins made sure that they were adjusted to fit my face well. He also told me to come in anytime if I ever needed them adjusted again. Let's be honest, nobody *enjoys* going in for an exam and getting new contacts or glasses. It's one of those annoying things that we just accept as a part of life. Recently though, Dr. Perkins changed my outlook of this whole process for me. He is funny, engaging, witty, very knowledgeable and was eager to answer all of my questions. I went to Dr. Perkins in 2016 and he said that because I had a medical condition that affected my eyes he would bill my medical insurance and not my eye insurance. He assured me that all I would owe is the copay of $12 versus $10 for my eye insurance. Since it was only $2 I agreed. Fast forward to 2018 when I returned and was told I owed them almost $200 because my medical insurance didn't pay. I should have refused to pay but I did and learned my lesson not to return. Also after I filled my new prescription I called to see if they had increased it from what it was and they refused to tell me since I had not been in almost a year. Mind you the prescription is good for a year. He had also recommended eye drops and I asked for the type and they refused to tell me. I was not asking for a new prescription only that they give me information that I had paid for. Will not return. Gave 1 star cause you have to. Would give -5 if I could. read more

My daughter and I were vacationing on Kiawah and we both needed help with our vision. We decided to see someone in Charleston and searched Yelp for the best reviews, finding Perkins Eyewear. We made an appointment and went in, still a little dubious about our choice. We both had hour-long appointments with Dr. Perkins, during which he checked more eye related things than I have EVER had checked and did an extremely thorough refraction for each of our prescriptions ( I have had an incorrect prescription from my eye doctor for the last twenty years without knowing it!). I just picked up my glasses containing the prescription from Dr. Perkins and I don't think I've ever seen so well in my adult life. Dr. Perkins really cares about his patients. Even though we were from far away, he treated us like we would remain his patients for years (and I probably will drive the seven hours to Charleston to see him!). I cannot recommend Dr Perkins' office more highly. His brother Eric, who runs the front desk is very charming and extremely helpful whenever we have contacted him. Today was my first visit to Perkins and I can honestly say that Dr. Perkins is one of the finest doctors in the area (if not the finest). He was courteous, professional, very informative and actually took his time explaining the eye problems that I suffered from. This is the opposite of most doctors who like to get you in and out of their offices as quickly as possible. Additionally, he recognized my eye problems that my other eye doctor did not see, and knew how to treat the symptoms. I was greatly relieved because I thought that I would never get my eye problems corrected. Great changes for the better are happening in Park Circle. 15 years ago our little community was working hard to keep alive. Today it is a center of renewal. One of the gems that has found it's way into Park Circle is Perkins Eyecare + Eyeware. Dr. Perkins totally renovated what was a dilapidated building into a hip & cool, light & airy, medical office & eye ware boutique. On top of that, Dr. Perkins and his staff are extremely professional and treat patient care like one wishes every doctor did. He truly seems to have care and concern of his patients (myself included) as his primary focus. As a previous post mentioned, he has a way of keeping the medical part very entertaining and conversational while maintaining decorum and professionalism. As for the selection of eye ware, I was very happy to find a nice selection of unique frames many of which are made in the USA with others being made in Norway & Japan. If you are going anywhere else to have your eyes checked, you are wasting your time! Dr. Perkins is the best at what he does. He is precise and to the point. He follows through and explains what he is doing. He actually takes the time to make sure that the glasses you are about to purchase fits your face and once they come in he makes adjustments if necessary. I had never had a doctor do that. Once the initial consultation was done, i would never see that doctor in regards to frame selection and adjustments. I was blown away by this extra step, he makes sure that you are satisfied.
