7/21/22- Update on Dr Joel Berger & after years of constant infections I have finally found a real surgeon who has found from an x-ray that I had a foreign object in my gums below my implants. So I had to have surgery to remove it & also a biopsy because my infection has caused constant bleeding. Waiting for the results on the biopsy which is very scary! The surgeon found a "tack" that Dr Berger put there Years ago to hold tissue in place during a graft he performed. My new surgeon told me that this wasn't suppose to be left in for more than the time the graft needed to secure in place no longer than usually 2 wks. Long story short the graft didn't work (money wasted) & he forgot to take the tack out & that is another reason for the years of infections & my implants will need to be removed because they were put in wrong. The surgery was very painful because the tack had grown so deep in my gums that it took almost an hour to get it out. The bleeding has stopped & hopefully my biopsy will have positive results. Me & my family are praying for good news!! read more

I went to Permadontics about 7 or 8 years ago and got complete dental implants. I was told they were guaranteed for life. Not so. I went for a check up the other day as was told I needed an upgrade to a better composite for $11,000. or the same as I had for $5.000.00. The dentist said mine were worn. When I stated they had told me I had a lifetime guarantee the lady manager said oh no, just two years. I told her I never would have agreed to spend $50,000.00 for a two year guarantee.. I have gone to Permadontics every 6 months for cleaning and maintenance and honored my part. Now Permadontics doesn't want to honor their part. I got tired of having root canals and continuous gum treatment. Even though I continued to have dental treatment I was still losing teeth one by one. I had heard about Permadontics and decided to go in for their free consultation. I was pleasantly surprised. The doctors at PermaDontics evaluated my mouth with a special 3-D scan machine and told me that trying to save my teeth which had advanced gum disease and were lose was going to be a waste of time and money. Dr Aires fitted me with a full upper denture. The denture included implants to help hold everything in place. I wear the denture every day and I'm extremely pleased with the end result. Facilities Permadontics is easy-to-find and offers plenty of parking. Once inside, the waiting area is like a 5 star health resort. No offensive odors, no annoying drilling sounds, and free Wi-Fi. The treatment rooms are state-of-the-art. Comfortable leather chairs with remotely controlled satellite-enabled TVs. On several visits, I even stuck around for an few extra minutes just to finish a movie. Timeliness My complete procedure took place over several months with many office visits. On none of my visits did I have to wait long for treatment. Dr. Aires was always prompt. He never kept me waiting. On several occasions, he worked past normal office hours to finish whatever needed to be done that day. Pain and Discomfort None. Absolutely none. Removing all my remaining teeth really worried me. However, I was completely sedated and felt nothing. Installing the implants was also painless. Assisting Staff Dr Aires must have spent a lot of time finding the best staff. They are all very professional and courteous. Lots of cute girls too. Makes going to the dentist a lot more enjoyable. Followup Treatments My denture requires periodic return visits for simple adjustments and maintenance. So far, every return visit has gone very well. Same professional service every time. It has been about eighteen months since my procedure. I am extremely happy with my decision to go to Permadontics. I had been told by my regular dentists that implants were not an option for me, that I would need to just go with dentures. Dr. Berger and Dr. Aires did not see it that way. Thanks to them, I now have a wonderful smile that I can use with pride, I can eat an apple or corn on the cob at will. These things had been lost to me for years. Having experienced full upper and lower implant prosthetic replacement, I highly recommend ensuring your bite is comfortable and correct before you leave the dental chair. If something feels too high, say so. All it takes is tapping down on marking paper dentist provides in order to apply drill to fine tune occlusion/bite, so you don't go home "lopsided." Doctor requires your concise input and You are the one living with your teeth 24/7. Another suggestion, use "water pic" judiciously to remove material trapped between gums and prosthetics. You may wish to carry toothpicks to surreptitiously remove matter lodged in depressions between teeth (since you no longer need to floss) after going out to dine. I'm still "navigating" my new teeth and at times don't realize or feel I have food trapped there...but perhaps I am too self conscious! read more

I did not think that I could hate anyone, but I HATE Joel Berger. This quack performed unnecessary surgery to try and relieve snoring and removed the soft palate in my mouth. He managed to bill insurance $ 28 K, but the surgery did nothing to help the snoring, and even worse is that it caused permanent problems which cannot be corrected: the valve which directs air to my lungs and food to my stomach is no longer there. The result is that water flows into my lungs when I try to drink so I cough and gag.. I have acid reflux, and when the acid from my stomach finds its way into my mouth, it drains into my airways and lungs, then eats away at the membrane. The pain is excruciating, my body is being destroyed by the acid, and there is no method to reverse the mess which Joel Berger made. The stomach can handle the acid, but it destroys my airways and lungs. He has no respect for my time and kept me waiting for more than 3 hours on my first visit, and was consistently late by at least an hour on every subsequent visit. I was lucky enough to find real Doctors in Los Angeles. One of them performed a simple procedure on my turbinates. This was the procedure recommended by another physician who Dr Berger referred me to. This physician was happy to charge $ 150 for a short consultation, then told me that he only wants to work with children. The other physician in Los Angeles prescribed a CPAP machine, which took care of not only the snoring but also very problematic sleep patterns. Although Joel Berger sent me for two sleep studies, he did not prescribe a CPAP machine. Please note that I do not refer to him as "Dr". This is because I think of him as a Quack. read more

Really. After the x-rays I was told they would be right with me after they finished a phone call. 30+ minutes later still on phone. Guess the rules only apply to the patients. This is a long read and has been along time coming.. I waited this long out of so much hate and anger, should have put it up here long ago..I WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE DR JOEL BERGER A 1 Star really. I waited this long to write because I've really had to go through so much stress from 3 upper dentures, nothing still fits correctly..I also have thyroid cancer, which I believe it's from all the issues w this surgery and a constant yr of antibiotics. I felt the world should know the truth even 1 1/2 later. My name is Kathleen back in Sept 2015.. I had oral surgery with Dr Joel Berger. I proceeded to wait 4 hrs prior to my surgery finally after midnight my surgery began. The Dr had to smooth my left upper jaw gum line, which was like rocks and right side as well but left side was really bad, as well as close up my sinuses that's it. This whole thing started w western dental in El Cajon, CA when a Dr Peggy Ram pulled all my upper teeth and left 2 teeth in after it was over plus they left me w huge holes in my sinus cavaties (both sides) and left me NO TISSUE ON LEFT SIDE of gum line It was a fricken mess PLEASE, Don't GO TO ANY WESTERN DENTALS EITHER... What I didn't realize was that Sept 2015 Dr Berger NEVER did the surgery his associate did and he went home.. to my dismay, his nurse told me this after days of being home from sharp memorial hosp which btw, Dr Berger never visited me until day 3 inside this hospital after my surgery, he knew he did wrong. I was on morphine drip for 2 days and on day 3 Dr Berger finally came in I told him I was still in pain, terrible pain, swollen face, I couldn't breathe, he said it's normal really he had no sympathy or empathy, even after seeing him at his office on frost st several times after surgery! He didn't seem to care for people on disability or w Medicare/Medicaid he even said their a nightmare to work with to me. All insurance co are. Back to surgery! I couldn't believe he let his associate, do my surgery that I waited to do for months and how he messed me up SO VERY BAD the horrific yr of pain, antibiotics and suffering I went through and I already had a very bad immune system, for which I get gamma globulin for every month. After the surgery and several CT scans I asked for I was still having lots of sinus problems so, Dr Berger sent me to see Dr Brian weeks ENT in SD Dr weeks was a good man did what he could to help but honestly no one caught what really happened until I moved to Denver CO and saw Dr Anne Getz ENT! I had to have surgery yet again but I felt better since this is #1 upper respiratory hospital in the world in Dever CO, National Jewish foundation. March 2016..I'm so grateful to Dr Getz for finding the problems left from Dr Joel Bergers office..The Dr left in a tooth in my left side which needed removing but worst part is 2x2" amalgam glue was left in both sides of my maxillary sinuses (how, how could this happen, unless purposely) and no one caught this until after almost 6 mos of hell w sinus surgeries, and drs etc..yet more antibiotics. I tried to sue and saw attorney Scott Harris in SD but my guess is they paid him off. He wouldn't do it, he said I saw too many drs? Well even after a yr of journaling everything that happened from day (1) notes, pics, all drs, reviews you name it.. Bottom line this is/was malpractice and negligence, all about the money that's why Dr Berger works in his office all day and does surgeries M-F in evenings, or he use to, not sure now! It's not about compassion or kindness! Please, just fill my pocket book. Please, this should have NEVER happened to me by western dental or Dr bergers office but it did and it upsets me that Drs get away with this shit. I came to Permadontics as my last resort of get my entire mouth fixed because I have very bad teeth and have my entire life. I actually got to meet the doctor in person. I was referred to the PermaDontics center by a friend and can say I have been extremely impressed with the focus on care I have experienced. II came to Dr. Berger for help and was convinced that a full upper prosthetic was the solution. I've had and continue to have one of the most horrible experiences in my life with Permadontics. The first prosthetic fractured several times and I was made to feel it was my fault it was fracturing. The second attempt was off center and had to be remade and it fractured even though it was zircon. A picture and a letter was sent to Dr. Berger and he refused to acknowledge any responsibility for the failure and that it was somehow my fault. By that time I had moved to Sacramento and had to pay another $12,000 to have another prosthetic made which fractured again within a year. The dentist I was seeing said the basic design had a major flaw and any material placed on the underlying bar does not allow for enough material thickness to provide the strength needed to prevent the fracturing. In addition an implant placed in my lower jaw by Dr. Berger was placed too close to the adjoining tooth and it fractured the adjoining tooth and the crown on the implant came out and to this day the implant is bare in my mouth without a crown with no recourse or financial resources left to correct the tragic situation I've placed in. No solution has been offered by Dr. Berger. I think he hopes I will just go away or die before he will do the right thing and stand behind his failed work and correct it. I am over 80 years old, a veteran and ask, what am I to do now??? read more

Beware of this place, quoted me a rediculous price of almost $9000 to extract one tooth, small bone graft which is nothing more than a paste that's inserted at the time of extraction and, a post and crown. For $2500 plus airfare, you can fly to almost anywhere in the world, have the same work done and end up with $5000 in your pocket. My last two implants were done by a very competent fellow in Tijuana for $3000 (I'd be happy to share his contact info) Why did I waste my time with Permadontics? To ad insult to injury, you are forced to pay for your own parking, the receptionist has a really surely attitude and, cold coffee is on offer. My experience with Permadontics involved replacing 6 upper front teeth, needless to say I was nervous since it was the very visible fronts we were dealing with. The results were amazing. They replaced 6 teeth with an implant bridge in two sections. They look amazing and I am a very scrutinizing person. Dr. Berger did the surgery and also did a gum tissue graft to fill in a noticeable depression in the gums...he did an amazing job. Dr. Khatami designed and fit the bridges...his attention to detail and aesthetics is unmatched. I've had many experiences with dental work, bridges and implants in the past with the best dentists in San Diego. They do not compare to the work done at this location. I don't normally write reviews but I had such an exceptional experience at Permadontics that I need to inform anyone considering dental implants of my excellent treatment. All the staff members and all the doctors all extremely competent and caring. In addition, the teeth I received look so natural that no one would even know that I have dental implants. The procedure itself went very smooth with surprisingly minimal discomfort. The fees were very reasonable taking into account that Permadontics gave me 5 implant posts and not 4 as other implant dentists do to replace all my upper teeth. read more

I have had 12 implants done previously done by another doctor named Dr. Roberts of Encinitas. So I do have some experience with this. I saw the new advertising on TV of new technology I went there they charged me 12000.00 of which it has been the worst experience of my entire life. If you want to be black and blue for two weeks and spend excessive amounts of money you have picked the right place . Dr. Berger is the worst implant doctor I have ever had in my life. He has a hand that is so heavy that it abuses you. Being that your knocked out you don't know for several days. What I am writing here I told him to his face. When you go you also pay for parking that you are also not told. I stopped in the middle of the program after I had had just about enough . I caution others to carefully check them out . Joel Berger is the worst Doctor that there is. In closing I caution you all from going there. If you have no experience you can get railroaded there. I urge you to go else where. I went to Permadontics and scheduled a surgery with them and gave them the non-refundable deposit. Unfortunately, I lost my job a couple of months before the the surgery date and reached out to Permadontics that I had to cancel the surgery. Asking for their understanding in this difficult time was a refund of my deposit since every penny for me matters. I was able to get 1/2 of my deposit and was hoping to get the full refund, they gave me the option of them keeping the 1/2 deposit and use it for future surgery. I informed them that I don't foresee this is in the future anymore, whether be with Permadontics or elsewhere. It was tough to get the first half of my money, it was more tougher to get the other half. I would have recommended this clinic to others but unfortunately they were not completely understanding of a patient's crisis. Their concern is all about the profit they need to meet. read more
