I have now been working with Rich and the PMPT crew for almost 2 years. When l started I couldn't get up from the ground without effort. I labored through 2 minute "jog"/walk intervals. I was very unhappy with my health. My goal at that point was to some day do a triathlon. Some day . My last review was 6 mos into working through personal training. Since then I switched over to group training. I do at least one class a week. Well, I did achieve my triathlon goal. In August 2015 I did my first sprint triathlon. In October my first Olympic distance tri. In December my first half marathon. Then this past October I completed a half Ironman! Over this time I have not had any significant injuries. I have consistently been able to set higher goals and meet them. These changes happened because of the culture of fitness I was introduced to by PMPT. We've always focused on form and discipline. It's never been about higher weight, more reps, or any degree of competition. I learned the value of slow, incremental gains. Let me also preface that this is all completely new to me. I had never been an endurance athlete nor a gym head. My time with PMPT represents the most significant period of fitness in my life. This is a gym unlike any else I have been to. For starters, it feels more like a family, not corporate at all. They don't charge for towels nor are you required to sign up beforehand. The trainers are super approachable, friendly and excited about fitness. I love all the outdoor activities they offer such as the stair group, trail running and foundation. It's nice to have that community feel outside the gym. I have been going to see Rich for years and he keeps getting better and better. Classes usually start with a warm up, dynamic stretches, some cardio and or foundation. That takes about 7 minutes and the remainder of the class is dedicated to the workout, usually intervals, but he does switch it up quite a bit. If you are looking for longer periods of cardio I would try one of the classes offered on the weekends, such as the stair group....that's a killer workout. I love the variety of classes ranging from mobility and foundation to intense interval training and strength. This is a small gym and there no showers that are offered at the larger gyms, but it's not intimidating, they offer reasonable prices and everyone from the trainers to the members are super friendly. Rich Edgren is the greatest trainer in the Bay Area! His focus on injury-free, functional natural movement is timeless for all levels and ages and abilities. His compassionate and non-judgmental approach leaves me feeling empowered and good about taking care of myself without getting hung up on superficial appearances. At the same time, his workouts are efficient and holistic, which get more results in less time. I almost fear my review because he is so far the best kept workout secret around here. At the same time, I so strongly believe in his approach that I want everyone to do this instead of all of the workouts they are doing that aren't working for them....so I'm willing to give away my secret! I was a dancer for over 20 years, so although my stance was proper in dance class, it wasn't at the gym. I walk with my feet out and trying to correct them to workout properly is a struggle. Cannot say enough good things about this gym! One of my biggest roadblocks to working out at a typical gym was the judgement and people "peacocking" around shooting daggers and side eye your way. But this place welcomes people of all ages, sizes, fitness levels, and backgrounds and offers just the right amount of challenge so you see growth personally and physically. I came to see Elyse because as a competitive athlete and tennis player, I was having aches and pains in my knees. Elyse gave me a series of warmup exercises that has resulted in me not having as much knee pain. I feel stronger as I have been strengthening the muscles around the pain point. I am so excited to see Rich branch out on his own ... and closer to me :) I have worked out with Rich for three years - both one-on-one and in group settings. He makes working out fun (did I really just say that?!) and knows when and how hard to push you (for me, I changed my abilities on a weekly basis ... based mostly on my moods which he saw right through). I use to take Rich's classes at another gym that he worked at and when I heard he was leaving I was so sad. However, he opened his new place Perpetual Motion, and I was so happy. Rich's style is very unique and his classes really incorporate the whole body. His emphasis on community and forming relationships with everyone is one of the many reasons I keep going back. I am an avid Step It Up attendee and it has transformed my endurance along with my weekends. Rich and Elyse's beliefs around fitness and community fall in line with what I envision for my life and their energy provides great fun for the class. The classes are challenging but also filled with laughter which is a testament to how their gym is run. Been going to their stair climbs with Elyse & Rich for a couple years now. I absolutely love the personal one-on-one attention that you get with these guys. They're both really educated in physical anatomy, and this is super helpful with correcting form, posture, and stretching. I'm personally not the fastest runner in the world, so I'm really thankful that Elyse is there to run beside a slowpoke like me while the speedier members are up at the front with Rich. The challenges are really scaled to your personal needs- Rich is really awesome about modifying certain exercises to make up for my lack of upper-body strength and weak knees. I can only describe Incredible, as to my experience. I am recovering of both Heart failure and a stroke. I was lucky in gaining almost 95% of my stroke. After spending 8 months on my ass, Rich is tailoring my re-entry to working out. The core structure he has developed me is to concentrate on my returning to OCR racing. If I had been studying his planning, I can say I would have saved myself from injury's in the past from my return and how I trained the last 35 years. Perpetual Motion is a great gym! There are many different classes and types of exercise to choose from. I particularly enjoy the circuit training class. The class starts with a warm up, then the circuit which is usually made up of about 8 stations. Stations can be adapted to your needs or any injuries. The class ends with a cool down and stretching. I particularly like the class type setting at Perpetual Motion because it helps motivate me. I have had a dislike hate relationship with my big gym franchise. I felt a little lost. I am going through a ton of physical changes so I need a trainer that treats me in a range from push me to pity me. So I set a personal training session with Elyse. Seriously the best move of the month. From start to finish I felt in control while she guided me with her knowledge and experience. I am getting over a knee injury and she was attentive about it, but in no way did she focus on it as a weakness. She put me in control of how it was feeling as opposed to either babying me or trying to break me. I am so appreciative of that. I can only speak for myself; however if you have some health problems you want an opportunity now and again to go beyond your normal capability. To push yourself like a healthy person would. So when I added some reps she just let me do it. It felt awesome. First time I have felt normal physically in over two years. There was no yelling or screaming, it was a cooperative session of her sharing her vast knowledge of how the body moves and how it's affected throughout the workout. If you have some injuries, if you're overweight do not lock yourself in a tower; you have the right to try and fight for the health level you want. Rich has done so much for me over the past 5 years that we've worked together that I get a little emotional trying to write a recommendation that fully encompasses my experience. Working out does not come naturally to me, and my 47 year old body does not always naturally want to do what I'd like it to do. Rich has developed a program for me that keeps me fit, motivates me to progress, and helps me feel great almost all of the time. His workouts are fun and challenging, yet manageable. He seems to know exactly how hard he can push me on any given day. We listen to great music. He uses great equipment, but understands that some of the best work outs don't require a lot of equipment. Rich Edgren is a highly qualified personal trainer in addition to having a "second-sense" about what his clients need. He knows when to push, when to back off, and when to scrap the "plan" for the day to provide the "right" workout. I didn't have any specific goals when I first started working with Rich 10 months ago, only to improve my level of physical fitness. I had just returned from a fairly demanding outdoor vacation and was looking forward to an even more rigorous one. I knew I would enjoy my travels more if I were in better shape. As an older adult with an orthopedic injury, a troublesome neck/back, and some arthritis I was facing some limitations on what I could do, how I went about it, and what the ultimate outcome would be. Rich has been very sensitive to my physical needs and abilities (or lack thereof). My strength has improved, my balance and agility are better, my back problems are almost non-existent, and I have a new outlook on taking on challenges I wouldn't have considered a year ago. A byproduct of this increased confidence in myself has been conquering my biggest fear: heights. With Rich's encouragement I have been able to overcome my severe acrophobia, which allowed me to enjoy zip-lining and suspension bridges in Costa Rica. My new year's resolution "Say Yes before No" has opened my world to many new possibilities. Rich has been a creative support in my fitness goals for the last two years since my friend recommended him to me. I really like his new studio. He has a terrific interest in body mechanics has shared his knowledge and has been able to function as a physical therapist in my life-- no cookie cutter classes -- everything is custom designed to the client's specific body strengths and needs.
