We had a great pop in lunch! Our server was awesome because my #extra son was so hungry he decided that he wanted to order his food when she asked for drinks. lol. But I I don't care, if he's hungry- eat! Ambiance was great, we did have some people who were such loud talkers in the area- but that's not on the restaurant. Food was amazing as always. Two hosts had the opportunity to seat us. (Myself and my 10 yr old). They did ask if inside or out. He chose inside and I asked for a window and they accommodated us. I always plan a fancy lunch for my trips to New Bern and today's experience was consistent with my past self-indulgent cravings. The bartender Chris entertains & engages each customer grouo with a running witty banter that is adorable, even when a bit sarcastic.! You can tell the team of host/waitstaff & culinary crew are like a family. It's a great ambiance inside because of the service with an incredible view outside of water, boat, & nature. I ordered the clams and linguine and there was sand in every one of my clams still in the shell, telling me they didn't let them soak and discharge that sand. Once seated, we were immediately met by our waitress Catherine. She took our drink order and was back at our table within 5 minutes with our drinks. Because of how quick and efficient Catherine was, I thought I was back in Manhattan! After browsing the menu, we asked Catherine if she had any suggestions. She asked each of us what we were in the mood for and suggested accordingly. I ordered the grilled octopus, tequila shrimp, and fettuccine chicken pasta dish. All were outstanding! If your looking for dinner with a waterfront view, this establishment is literally one of the only waterfront restaurant's within a reasonable distance of where we were staying. Unfortunately this means you will want to reserve a table well in advance if you plan to dine outside with a view of the waterfront. Since there was no room at the inn, other than the moderately sized bar, we decided to pull up a couple stools. If you still insist on sitting outside, like we did, they apparently have a self serve section on the waterfront patio dedicated to bar seating. If you don't mind pulling your weight when it comes to retrieving your own food and drinks, this is a great option. I found the stuffed fried chicken breast a very unique and tasty entrée. I always enjoy a good fried chicken, not a dried chicken! The siracha honey glaze was phenomenal and didn't dull the crisp on the chicken at all. I am a sucker for sweet potatoes, and I am quite sure they would have been much better served at a higher temperature, luke-warm just didn't do it for me. This is a good place, the bar staff are excellent, but it seems the rest of the staff were struggling and short on time, not much of a personable experience. Cheers! read more

This is always a stop for dining out when I am visiting my parents in New Bern, North Carolina. Positioned right on the waterfront, it has the best views of any restaurant in the small town. You can even sit on a huge deck atop the river when there's good weather. My family always enjoys their food choices whether it's a salad, crab cakes, shrimp and grits or a burger. This past time we really enjoyed an appetizer of frizzled Brussel sprouts with pork belly. Their Bloody Mary is always a highlight of my visit. It is a little pricey for what you get and the service is not as attentive as you'd hope, but the atmosphere and environment makes up for that. We asked for a medium steak but was given this piece of cardboard. My husband tried to eat his steak slowly, until we could get someone over to our table. After a while, we were offered to have a ribeye remade. We declined because we didn't want to want 30+ minutes for another steak, while everyone else was already eating. He didn't even finish the steak. But they still wanted to charge us $50 for this cardboard, we thought half off the steak was fair. Instead they just offered one free dessert or a measly $10 off. Had we known they would have only offered $10 off, we would have waited for another steak. The fact that they were so unwilling to do the right thing and meet us half way with JUST the steak, was just so weird to all of us. The bill over $200. We have no problem paying, and we did. We are just so disappointed with the level of customer satisfaction. The server was great though so we took care of her. We came here for quality and great service and tonight was far from that -So much for fine dining. Done spending money here. It's always more of a miss, than a hit. You know, I should know by now to trust my fellow yelpers, but this place was so good last time we were in town, I thought maybe they've just been off lately and it will still be as good as we remembered. It wasn't. It was pretty awful actually. In case you aren't up for reading the entire review: SKIP THIS PLACE! I promise eating by the water is not worth eating here. As other recent reviewers have mentioned, the waitress literally started with us by talking about how busy they are and she seemed exasperated. I've waited tables and I understand how difficult it can get at times; but I also know that when we were busy, I made a whole lot more money. If this negativity is a trend among your servers, which it seems to be, then maybe it's time for a sit-down. We started with the hushpuppies and they literally came out within 3 minutes, which concerned me. These aren't your free hushpuppies that are served at every seafood place so they are always being cooked and so are always hot when served. As the photo shows, it's an appetizer and therefore they should be hot. They were literally cold and to make it worse they were also over-cooked. Fish and chips. At a seafood place. One would think this dish is so basic that surely it would be great here. WRONG! The fries were, yep, cold. I didn't eat but two and this girl can down some fries. The fish was hot and it was a pretty cut of fish, but the flavor was missing. The slaw was also uneatable! It was warm and limp. The complete opposite of what slaw should be. I honestly think that Captain D's would serve better Fish and Chips and charge a whole lot less for it. My husband said his fish tacos "weren't bad" which isn't a ringing endorsement. You know, I really should have raised hell and said something, but it just didn't seem to matter. And, the food would not have come out any better had they recooked it. When we booked a reservation here, we had no idea it was literally a short walk from our B&B. Arrived for an early Friday night dinner but during our visit, it filled up and got noisy quickly. The menu was not extensive but had enough options for various tastes. Our fried green tomato appetizer came quickly, but it took a while to get our entrees of grilled salmon, and pasta with scallops. My wife enjoyed her salmon but I was disappointed in the pasta dish -- it was very salty (too much cheese maybe?) and there were only two scallops. Upon our server's recommendations we ordered the key lime pie, which was good but I'd describe more like key lime tartlets. The view of the waterfront was nice as the sun was going down. read more

Very beautiful place on the water! We dined for lunch and both had the fish tacos. They were just okay, not a lot of flavor and very bland. Needed some salsa or something to brighten them up. My wife and I are very big foodies so we enjoy going out for dinner often. With confidence we can say that the food was absolutely HORRIBLE!!!! We ordered fish tacos and fries. When they came out (late) it tasted like when by mistake you left yesterday's meal in the trunk of you car. . Cold, horrible and tasting like cardboard. I also ordered a glass of bubble water from the gun at the bar and they charged me $2.50 a glass. There is a nice view ...but find a McDonalds, a riverbank, a bottle of good wine and you will have a better experience!! This was a very nice restaurant. Right on the water, so pretty and relaxing. The food was great. I had the NC crab cake and fried green tomatoes that I ordered as an appetizer and it was so delicious but I was disappointed that it was only one crab cake which is why I have deducted one star from my review. I had the blue mahi with lump crab as my meal and it was so delicious. The sweet potato purée and purple cabbage were delicious and great sides with the moist mahi. And for dessert I had the crème brûlée which was average. But that crab cake and the mahi entree was sooo good. And the service was great. I will definitely be back. read more

After trying to find an outside seating option at other seafood restaurants in late January, Persimmons seemed to be the only place for my wife and I to enjoy lunch outside in New Bern. Perhaps, the brisk (upper 40's but sunny) day was just too cold for the other places to be willing to seat people outside. In any case Persimmons was willing to let us sit on their waterfront deck in the sunshine, which turned into a fabulous lunch experience. We both started with cocktails, I ordered an old fashioned, and the wife ordered a French 75. My old fashioned was fine, nothing to write home about but met the expectation. I tasted the French 75 my wife ordered, and it was delicious, bright, and crisp, perfect for the sunshine on the deck. I ended up ordering one as my 2nd drink. My wife tried the Belle of the Ball for her 2nd, which was also a nice fresh cocktail. We started with the fried green tomatoes and the clam chowder. The tomatoes were excellent. The breading was consistent but not too thick, the sauces and the peppers matched the flavors well. The clam chowder was good, however the potatoes were cooked a bit too al dente for my liking, perhaps they get a little softer at dinner service or we just got a fresh batch that didn't have time to sit. For Entrées we got the Shrimp Burger and The Fish Tacos. The shrimp burger was solid, the spicy sauce was a good compliment, and we ordered the cheese grits as a side, it was cheesy and delicious. The Fish Tacos were not only beautiful, but absolutely fantastic. The breading (much like the tomatoes) was not too thick and complimented the delicate fish wonderfully. The sauce and veggie combo under the fish complimented each bite. These tacos are some of the best fish tacos I've ever had. You should get them. Our server Erin (at least that's what the receipt said) was polite, personable, prompt, and professional. It was a great lunch! Next time I'm in New Bern, I will be sure to come back and try some other dishes. There are several other things on the menu I'd like to try, though I might have to start with the fish tacos again. read more

I love this place mainly for the outside seating because it is absolutely amazing out there but the food is also very good. The last time I went I had the fish and chips and they were incredible. They have a very diverse drink menu that is so fun and helpful when deciding what you'd like to sip on. For my first return to in-person dining since COVID closings, I was going to check out this waterfront restaurant in New Bern. We were supposed to sit outside (to best enjoy the views and for extra safety), but sadly rain caused them to close the outside section. Upon entering the restaurant, I did take notice of all of the pandemic precautions they were taking including table/patrons being spaced out, staff wearing masks, disposable paper menus, hand sanitizer stations, and 6ft markers on floor near entrance/bar. Service was a bit up and down. Our waitress had tables upstairs and down so she did disappear for more lengthy chunks of time than she should. However, I get that places are getting their grooves back after being closed and have additional requirements now so overall no real biggie. We ended up being sat upstairs near a window. It was not the view I wanted, but weather is what weather is. I was still excited to get some delicious local seafood. For an appetizer we ordered the Scallops Casino (five scallops on the half shell, bacon, peppers, onions, parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, and lemon). I had heard of Oysters Casino before, but not scallops so was excited to try the new take. Man, they were super good, and the plating had such nice presentation! Scallops were cooked nicely with just an enough breading but not too much. I really enjoyed the little red sweet drop peppers that added a nice pop of flavor and the acid from the lemon. My mom got the Crab Crusted Mahi (sweet corn risotto, fresh citrus and micro basil salad, sweet drop peppers, ice apple cider vinaigrette) for her entrée. I got to have a bite or two and also felt it was a very tasty and a beautiful looking dish. For my entree-I got the Crispy Skinned Sea Bass (sweet corn puree, beet and apple hash, sauteed local baby kale, warm bacon vinaigrette). The plating was stunning, so many nice colors. I absolutely eat with my eyes so the look of this dish made me very excited to dive in (on top of my already excitement to have straight from the kitchen food from a restaurant after so long!). The sea bass was perfectly cooked, and they did not let me down on the crispy skin. The fish went very well with the sweet and savory sides items. All Went well last night. The food was delicious and well prepared. I had seafood pasta which was outstanding. The others had pot chops and salmon. The dishes came quickly and the presentation was first class. Our server Julia was great too and kept in touch with us several times to make certain we were happy. For New Bern I think their prices are a bit steep but at least the food was prepared on a sufficiently high level so I won't be going often but I will return. It was a Saturday night and we booked a table. However there were only a few diners, maybe 12 people, a small crowd for a Saturday evening outing. Usually it's crowded. Who knows? read more

The restaurant is very pretty, the views are unbeatable, and the patio dining and service are outstanding. Sadly, the food this time was very average. I had a pasta dish which was fine but nothing special. My wife had shrimp and grits that was barely edible. The grits were dry, underseasoned, and crunchy. That said, we will absolutely be back. This is one of those places that should be an absolute five star experience, but because of small errors, something is lacking. That said, I still recommend trying this restaurant.
