For the price and for being next to the ocean I was really hoping the seafood was good. The clam chowder was decent nothing special. The Mahi Mahi with crab was presented beautifully. Unfortunately, didn't match it when it came to the taste. Mahi Mahi was a little dry and it was very small portions. I wish I went with the steaks. Totally bummed this didn't live up to the hype! We walked in at 4pm on a Sunday and was told they weren't seating and walk-ins or even doing a wait list because they're so backed up with reservations - no worries, bar seating was fine. Went to the restroom and they had magically found a table for 2 with a water view. Weird, but Awesome! Amazing views. Persimmon Sunrise was great! Crab dip was okay, but there were SO MANY flies. Everywhere. Food, drinks, my face, arms... It was awful. We got the fish/crab and the shrimp and grits and neither were good. The fish was very dry. Shrimp and grits had a full on spaghetti style sauce. Waitress was inattentive at best. Would consider coming back for drinks on the deck but for the price there's other better options. read more

Delicious waterfront dining! Dog friendly too! The servers made a fuss over our dog, bringing him fresh water and lots of snuggles. Hubby and I had the shrimp tacos and they were delicious. A few more shrimp would have made them even better. Yummy sauce and nice warm corn tortillas. Our server, Jess, was lovely and attentive. What an absolute gem? Nothing like sitting right on the ester for a lovely Saturday dinner with your beau. My server was pretty amazing and super nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our brussel sprout app. I ordered the sea bass for dinner which was cooked perfectly. The only complaint is I could not taste the sweet potato in the sweet potato risotto. I can't remember which wine we ordered but it was a nice pair with dinner. I definitely should have ordered dessert, but NEXT TIME for sure. read more

We made a reservation for 15 on a Saturday with no problem. Our waiter was great especially since we had two little ones. The food was all good but not great. The blackened mahi on my tacos was a little dry for me. The Brussels were fabulous! Drinks are a little pricey as are the entree prices for lunch time. We came here after hearing about how good the food was here and the ambience. However, the ambience is the only good thing about this place. There are no complimentary anything here. I was hoping to get some bread during the long wait for our food but sadly it's not a thing here The hush puppies were very strange tasting. Overcooked and served on dollops of spicy cream cheese and a weird vinegar covered weed. I ordered the stuffed dried chicken, but it came out really dry. It tastes like it was frozen and just heated up when someone orders it. I really wanted to like this place but it was very disappointing and loud. There was also a group of people upstairs running around and making loud noise like a wrestling match. If you want a nice dinner, I suggest Morgan's which is nearby. They never disappoint. Great Brunch! Had a fantastic shrimp and grits! And fish and chips really good choice

My husband and I dined at Persimmons last night for our anniversary. My husband went safe with the ribeye and I have the stuffed mahi. His ribeye was cold so we let the server know and she took it back. The manager brought it back out and it was slightly warmer. After waiting 10-15 minutes for them to do this you would think it would have either been a fresh steak or definitely better than Luke-warm. It definitely was not a juicy tender ribeye but more like a New York strip. It was very disappointing to say the least especially since we didn't get to eat together. Lastly the manager didn't even offer a discount or desert. So we paid full price for a reheated tough New York strip that was supposed to be a ribeye. read more

We were very disappointed in our most recent visit here. Primarily in the customer service. We have been to Persimmons many times and it has always been a highlight of our stops in New Bern. It's been my favorite place to eat there since I first discovered it. Today's visit was shameful. Two members of our party were allergic to shrimp. One asked about swapping out the shrimp (which comes on the salad automatically) with chicken. She was told yes but the added chicken would be an up charge, making the Cobb $28. When speaking with the manager about that silly policy she said it was discourage substitutions. What? My friend decided on the Caesar instead and added chicken. The chicken was cold, overcooked, and the amount was small. The lettuce was in huge pieces, nowhere close to bite sized. Another friend got the Smash burger that was advertised with pimento cheese. There was none to speak of on the burger and the beef patties were over cooked. We ordered the Brussels Sprouts (which were fine) and calamari that was served with a very sweet sauce. The salmon was ok but it used to be served with a wonderful glaze. The cheesy grits and Maque Choux was not as interesting as it could have been. We usually visit this restaurant with vegetarians. They would have been hard pressed to eat here this go round. They do have a Vegetarian French Dip but there were no vegetarian protein options for the salads. The Cobb could be an interesting option but take off the bacon and shrimp and you're left with an expensive and basic salad. Overall, it was still the costumer service that left us all with jaws dropped. The unwillingness of an upscale restaurant to want to help their customers is mind boggling. read more

First time in New Bern, but our friends, who live here, took us to Persimmons as it is a beautiful restaurant with waterfront views and outdoor seating. And it was open on a Sunday night. It is a large restaurant, beautifully decorated. We had reservations for 7pm and when we got there the restaurant was busy. The servers were stretched out. They have a limited food menu yet with nice and varied options. Their drink menu has plenty of options. The fish tacos are catfish and they were good. The Tomato Pie, one of my favorites dishes, is very differently made to all the ones that I have eaten in the South. It was good and original. Instead of being a slice of a whole pie, here they make them individually. The crust is light and crispy. Instead of being topped with melted cheese, here it is topped with burrata, what a nice touch! Then it is drizzled with Balsamic vinegar. Welcoming bartender Jennifer was in the weeds and still friendly, professional, and fast making craft cocktails from the "If you give a guest a drink" storybook menu! I stayed for dinner and moved to outside deck after the main dinner crowd had gone so feel my server and kitchen was a bit on the tired side but the view is great and seating is comfortable. I waited some time for my glass of rose and ordered the short rib special which was nicely cooked with green beans but very blah mashed potatoes - not what I'm used to with this dish. Crème brûlée cheesecake was delicious. Manager makes the rounds and is working hard to keep customers happy and get feedback. read more

The new menu has limited options for those with allergies or vegetarians. Asked to change to chicken from shrimp for the Cobb salad and we were told we would have to pay the $19 price of their Cobb salad plus an additional $9 to add chicken and remove shrimp. The general manager explained they implemented this policy to discourage substitutions. Even after explaining that the change was for a food allergy, she insisted on the up charge. Ordered the Caesar salad and added chicken to that ($9) and was horribly disappointed in the salad. Croutons were soggy cornbread, lettuce was in enormous pieces, and the added chicken was cold and dry and didn't have much flavor. The one bright spot in our experience was the server. I get it you can charge the price for the view, but come on the food should be better than this!! The menu will make you think you are going to have a foodie experience, but the result will let you down. The bar is 100% not supporting the waiters with extremely slow service and denying customization of drinks. My ask was for blue cheese olives and since the restaurant was more than half empty the waitress thought she could do it, but the bar denied her. We ordered the Creole shrimp and fried green tomato's with crab cakes. Honestly the shrimp did not taste fresh, and the bread was clearly store bought. If it was not for this amazing view and amazing waitress this would have been a one star. Get your bar in check and get your chef to review his recipes. And definitely do not ask for any substitutions, the Cobb salad comes with shrimp for $19 ... My wife and I visited in November. They have a fantastic outdoor dining area which has two tiers. The top tier has a dozen tables for small and large groups and the lower tier is set up with bar stool seating facing the river. Really great views which is the real attraction here. The menu is pretty good with lots of seafood options and southern food staples like shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes. I had the crab cake and my wife has the sea bass. Both were good. The sides were also fantastic. Lots of local produce and the menu has lots of seasonal sweet potato sides. We both really loved this up-leveled hush puppy dish! It has wonderful pimento cheese under each puppy and the balsamic drizzle adds nice flavor. Worth a try. read more

Waterfront restaurant, you'd think fresh amazing fish tacos, right ? That was not the case here. The atmosphere is serene the waitstaff was friendly & service was good. We ordered the green fried tomatoes, fish tacos, & a cheeseburger. The funny thing is they asked "how would you like the burger cooked, pink or no pink?" The waiter said they have a new chef and that' he wasn't gonna deal with rare, medium rare, and so on... it's just pink or no pink. The fried green tomatoes were tasty. Beautiful waterfront patio was the big draw for my first dining out experience since the pandemic. It's been 3 months since I've been to a restaurant to eat. I admit I was anxious about going . Outdoors would be the only way I was going. One of New Berns nicer restaurants, and only its second day since reopening, this place seemed to be handling all the new guidelines very well. Reservations only . And when you drive up they text you to come on in your table it ready... not sure what great app they are using to track my phone number. I thought it was great though. Sanitizer and gloves readily available for guests. Staff had on masks and were all great about maintaining distance from everyone. Inside the tables had been set to a 6 ft distance as were they outside, also visibly very clean . Seated on the patio as I requested, although I have to say the dining room was full too, our table was nicely secluded from anyone. Servers were very friendly, and quick to get anything you asked for. Paper menus, one time use. Started off with a spinach artichoke dip with pita and sweet potato fries. The dip could have been a bit warmer, but was good, the fries were delicious, and when I asked for ketchup, they gave me one serving packets. So not shared containers. I ordered the appetizer scallops casino, which came in a shell with toppings of bacon, onion, peppers,, breadcrumbs and Parmesan broiled with fresh lemon. Enough for a meal, these were great, usually don't see scallops with things on them, so different , nice flavor. Pretty too. My friends ordered the special which was a fried flounder on a bed of quinoa, with a hash topping. Another good dish, unusual, different. And then we had the tomato pie, which came with greens, the pie itself was like a bowl of pastry with the tomatoes and cheese layered. Looked fabulous, could have done with being warmer than it came out, my only little complaint . Great wine list , lots of variety. I had the Prosecco, always good. Ordered the coconut cake for dessert. Between 3 it was plenty. Comes with strawberries and cream, great coconutty flavor, and moist. Recommend this for sure! Easy bill paying with at table check out machines. They also have a outside exit so you don't even have to go inside. Good place to ease into going back out for dinners. The staff here you can tell have been trained well. Felt comfortable being there. Glad to be back out. Back to Persimmons on our way to Oriental! Didn't get as lucky this time with the outdoor patio seating as it rained, but we got to sit upstairs with a nice view of the river . Nicely spaced out for social distancing and all staff still following guidelines. Masks, sanitizer and gloves provided. Again just great food and beverages. Ordered the mojito which was minty and with extra lime like I asked for. Wine and prosecco for the others and another cocktail I can't remember the name of but it had bourbon in it! A very pretty drink at that. We ordered the basket of biscuits which comes with butter and homemade jam. These are to die for seriously. Warm and melt in your mouth. The calamari , not my thing but everyone else said they were good , great presentation though. The sweet potato fries which are my Goto were crunchy outside and soft with sprinkles of sugar on it. Amazingly delicious. Entrees, we got crab cake with fried green tomatoes, again a great choice and great presentation. The scallops and shrimp with pasta and pesto, my friend said was yummy and a huge serving. With Parmesan on top. I got the fish and chips with more sweet potato fries! Not too greasy which was perfect and a really nice breaded coating. Loved it . Highly recommended. Such a great variety of entrees. The location is the best thing about this place honestly. The menu is limited and quite honestly the food bland. The first time we went was for brunch and I ordered a dish that had chorizo in it- it was greasy, unseasoned, small in portion size and cold. We have it a second try a few weeks later and I'm sad to say it was worse! I ordered a dish that was supposed to be chicken with sundried tomatoes in a cream sauce and fettuccine- the chicken was so over done it was gray in color and barely edible, the cream sauce was cold and the tomatoes were not present at all. The worst part is even though the food was cold, I dared not mention it to our waitress as it was evident she was not interested in anything more than getting us back out the door. At a place with $30 entrées, meals should not come out wrong due to lack of ingredients. They should say they're out of it. Prepare for seafood pasta that comes with about a tbsp of crab and maybe 3 small scallops. And beware.. they consider raisins (literal dried grapes) to be "fresh fruit" compote.
