Amazing open face sandwiches. Worth it but make sure you get more than one! Try em all

This is a really neat space with great drinks, just make sure you park strategically... the road can get entirely blocked by a train for a really long time, and you might find yourself a bit stuck! Didn't happen to us, but when we arrived, there was indeed a train sitting there, and some cars in front, well, they weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Inside is all vibes, kind of set up like an old pharmacy, but slinging cocktails instead, and I have to say, the cocktails were very tasty and well priced. All the tables were full of friend and family groups playing board games and enjoying various flatbreads and libations. Seems like the kind of place the local neighborhoods enjoy and spend quite a bit of time at. At the moment, can't remember the names of the cocktails we got, its been a few months. But I do remember the toasts. This place doesnt have a kitchen in a traditional sense, more like a prep area where they bring ingredients together (that I imagine are made off site) and toast it up to present you with some pretty unique combos and flavors. Honestly, a great way around some of the health code restrictions that start to apply to more in-depth operations while still having a robust menu. We ordered a variety for the 4 of us, as this was dinner that evening. Gettin Figgy with it was a favorite, as were the Pig and the Goat, and the Reuben. Their version of a Cubano was alright, but as could be the case you'd imagine, the pork was a little dry. The caprese was the only one we got that seemed to be a universal thumbs down, the avocado spread wasn't working with the other ingredients. Visiting family near New Bern, they recommended an easy night out at the Old Pinnix. This is an intimate space, a little off the main strip, with ample parking. It has a large and interesting drink menu and enjoyed several cocktails while we were there! I tried the Spiced Whiskey Mule, which was decent--more of a lemon taste than I expected--but then tried the Minty Cherry Mojito which I really enjoyed. We were intrigued by all the fun toasts, so we ordered several to share. My favorites were: Gettin' Figgy With It (cute names, for sure); The Pig and the Goat; and the Reuban. We did not enjoy the Caprese toast. Something about the avocado spread did not jive with the other ingredients. This is a great space for a small group friends. It's been intentionally set up with sitting areas and a wall of games you can choose from. You may struggle to find a seat and it's a place where people will park and sit for a while. Wouldn't mind going back to try out more cocktails with fun toast the next time I'm in the area! read more

I've eaten in a lot of quirky and eclectic restaurants, but The Old Pinnix is, literally, the "toast of the town". Our first visit was so amazing, we actually ordered lunch twice! Follow the train tracks down Hancock Street from the downtown area and you'll find this little gem on the corner at Queen Street. There's ample on-street parking as well as a gravel lot in the rear. If you're lucky, you can sit inside and watch massive freight trains amble by as you dine. We were greeted and seated by the lovely host/bartender/server who walked us through the open-face, "toasts-only" menu after dropping off a couple of boozy beverages, including a perfectly spicy Bloody Mary and a hot bourbon toddy. The menu, presented on flip-up boards, includes a vast array of proteins and fresh veggie toppings on a variety of toasted breads - that's it. But that's all you'll need to be hooked. The servings are ample and wonderfully flavorful. We started off with the Bourbon Berry Bird Bomb Toast, featuring sliced turkey, crispy bacon, tangy feta and housemade bourbon and cranberry jam. The Rye'd or Die Ruben Toast was a classic presentation of corned beef, tangy sauerkraut and melty Swiss cheese. You get two stacked portions per order, with most of the toasts ranging from $10-$12. We also ordered the Avgolemon-like chicken soup which had tiny dumplings and a lovely lemony flavor. That alone sparked a second order of the soup and our second round of toast, the Dill With It, featuring creamy sliced avocado, red onions, sun-dried tomatoes and topped with Tzatziki and fresh dill. This is a "gotta-try-it" restaurant spot if you're visiting New Bern. Great service, tasty toasts and a pleasant environment. read more

They have a parking lot ! Always a great thing with any restaurant/bar! Especially in the downtown area. New Bern has some really cool places and this was another one we found. Essentially a bar and hangout type place with a little bit of food . They have a really nice bar area with all kinds of cool cocktails and the classics too. They also have a tea blending area to make different flavors and concoctions . Kinda different. Nice seating areas, the bar was nice and then some tables and couches. They also have a bunch of board games you can play at your table. They had live music the night we went and they do frequently. He was arelly good and played some good tunes. So we happily tipped him. We ordered few different cocktails which were all great and each person enjoyed what they got . The espresso martini I got was on point and espresso forward like hiw I like . The coconut margarita,spiced whiskey mule and peach amaro fizz were also good . They serve a little bit of food which was cool and different. They call them toasts. Different breads with different toppings and just kick from the list or make your own. We got 4 different ones and shared them. They are big enough to cut up so everyone can try each others if you care to do that! We had the Reuben, caprese, prosciutto and the tzatziki chicken. All were excellent and freshly made . They serve food on all disposables so I imagine the kitchen is small so this is easy clean up. Toast making was a little slow but it seemed this place was a 3 man show . Bar and kitchen. They are worth the wait though and I loved the variety of toppings. We also made room their bread pudding! It was excellent and warm with nice subtle spices and perfect amount of sweetness. Great lively atmosphere and the bar tender was a cool dude. If I lived in New Bern I'd be here often. read more

I loved this restaurant/library/ game boardroom! Such an intimate,warm atmospherewith music included . I would have been content with just the ambience,but it turns out they have really creative and delicious drinks! They feature "toasts" topped with goodies like bruschetta, lasagna,figs and goat cheese. Wonderful to share with the whole table. It took awhile to get our food,but was very good when it did arrive. They do have gluten free options. The space is small and no one is going to be in a hurry to leave, so prepare to wait. Added benefit is their onsite parking. We had a wonderful evening! read more

The tea is outstanding. I haven't stopped thinking about it. Oolong Chinese tea. They have a good selection of coffee and tea. My husband got an espresso that was delicious. Such a unique experience from the decor, drinks and food. It is a small setting with a welcoming atmosphere. Board games sit around for patrons to enjoy. The bartender had her hands full with tending the bar and taking table orders, but did with a smile. My wife tells me she wants to take me to a place and it's a surprise. We get to the old Penix and it's a toast place and I thought toast, really. So I ordered the Havana Cubano toast. It was amazing. After reading through the menu, I think I would've probably tried every single toast they had, but we decided to just split the Mediterranean, which was also amazing. This is my new favorite place. The ambience is so cool, the staff is amazing, totally down to earth and easy to deal with. I cannot think of a negative thing to say about this place. Went here for breakfast after a hike out in Marietta Park. Very cool vibe inside that will remind folks of historic pharmacies that had a soda fountain while you were waiting for a medicinal concoction lol! We really liked the combination of different seating from bar stools to traditional tables and lower lounge type seating. Of course, if the food and drinks weren't good, it would be hard to justify a 5-star rating. But no problem here! The menu had a good selection of beverages, with the usual wine and beer. But what shines here is the special drinks that are hand-crafted while you wait. In a word, delicious! Several folks have mentioned they're not satisfied with the "Toast" concept. That's unfortunate because we loved them! Several guests ordered more than one, but we were totally satisfied with Prosciutto Toast and The Pig and The Goat Toast. Both were absolutely fresh, on a choice of bread, with quality ingredients that they didn't skimp on. Lovely, lovely atmosphere, and very different from anything else in New Bern. It feels almost European, and also like a perfect neighborhood spot. I haven't had the cocktails (stupid Dry January ruins all my fun), but the tumeric ginger tea is wonderful. I've tried a few of the toast options, and they are delicious. Staff is so welcoming and relaxed. I also want to note the great strides The Old Pinnix has made in the last few weeks since opening. They have expanded the menu (and now they have a physical menu!), and I think the staff has the timing down so that there is not a lot of lag time. The Old Pinnix is my new favorite lunch spot. And in February, probably my favorite teatime cocktail spot! read more

This was my wife and I's first visit. The owners were very friendly. The ambiance has a loungey-bright-speakeasy feel. We enjoyed the Blackberry Sage Smash made with Bourbon and the Dragonfruit Fizz Smash with Gin. Very well balanced drinks. The prosciutto toast with sourdough, mozzarella, arugula, cherry tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil and balsamic glaze was perfect with a nice crunch. The Pig and the Goat with sourdough, avocado, goat cheese, mango sauce, bacon and honey drizzle was deliciously creamy. We also really enjoyed the Dill with It Toast! Strolled in here today for a quick lunch with my wife. They have recently opened so I was curious, and it paid off. We had chicken salad toast (not "chicken salad" but grilled chicken and greens), avocado shrimp toast, and caprese toast. I think I could eat the caprese toast on a daily basis. All of the things we ordered were $6-$8. Great value for the quality. My wife loved the ambience, an old pharmacy converted into a very relaxing place. Service was phenomenal. The toast is ok, I think fresh bread is a must if you are selling toast, but theirs is store bought. The ambiance is great, the staff is wonderful, the drinks are good but the service is way too slow. Visiting my fiancé for Christmas and his parents wanted to check out this new location, and man was it a good recommendation! I tried the lasagna toast and was a huge fan of it; reasonably priced and very dense. I tried their spin on an old fashioned and really enjoyed it, but then the bartender followed up with a very smokey off-menu drink (a double-spiced Rob Roy) that was perfect for a winter night.
