I was a fostering a dog that I had wanted to adopt, I was told that the cost would be $350.00 if there were no vet visits. And when I said that I was wanted to adopt the dog the fee went up $500.00. So grateful to Mare, Heather and Joy at Pet-A-Bulls. They are so dedicated to all aspects that makes it possible for these amazing animals to find their Forever Homes. I first contacted Mare about adopting about a week ago. She took so much time with me on the phone, even though she was facing a crisis, as the well for her facility had run dry. There are SO MANY dogs there who need water! It was a real emergency and very expensive to find a work around and then begin digging a new well. Mare remained optimistic and just put a plan into action. She put me in touch with Heather and Joy, who administrate and foster for Pet-A-Bulls. Heather is currently fostering a LOT of dogs of ALL sizes at her home. She is super knowledgeable. These ladies dedicate their lives to these lil creatures, God Bless them. We met three days ago and my family adopted Skittles! Heather and Joy took their time to review all of Skittles medical history and needs. I felt very at ease with my decision after spending time getting educated about Skittles. Since we took Skittles home, Heather and Joy have been responding to all of my questions immediately. Adopted a dog from PetaBulls in September 2024. Within a week it became apparent that the animal was suffering from some sort of trauma and was fearful of white men. It would not let me approach and growled at white men on walks, not at blacks. I reached out to Mare and a representative reached out to us with suggestions for breaking through the behavior. She revealed that Mare knew beforehand that the dog had problems and probably shouldn't have been adopted out without discussing it with us. I followed through on the behavior management advice, but within the situation had not improved but actually got worse, so I let Mare know that we had to return the animal. After the return, I requested a refund of the $500 adoption fee multiple times but didn't ever received a response. At a Peta Bulls later adoption event in September I asked Mare why I hadn't received a response, and she instructed me to submit a request to her email address, and the board would address it at the next board meeting. I did so, but as of November 9th received no response. The lack of decency to even respond to my request is evidence to me that Mare is dishonorable and dishonest. We've adopted three dog from this rescue. Each have been healthy and perfect fits. We have adopted from other rescue groups and through the years Mare and her team have always given good recommendations or suggestions for various things throughout the years. We adopted 10 years ago, 3 years ago and this year. We have reached out to the other rescues for advice and never received any call or response versus Pet-a-bulls actually responded and had some great recommendations. They are no longer on Facebook or on messenger. All calls from me are never answered. I have left several messages with no Avil. I have left several messages to the board members of Pet A Bulls and I have yet to receive an answer to when exactly I will get my adopted dog back or my $500.00 dollars. Another month has passed and all emails and phone calls have been ignored. All I see happening is that someone who volunteers there keeps updating their review with 5 stars to bring their review back to the top in an attempt to be seen before all the bad reviews. And to that reviewer, my response is that I am a very responsible pet owner. I have never in my over 50 years of pet ownership re-homed a pet for any reason. It broke my heart to do so now. I understand the hardships of running a shelter, but to treat your "customers" like dog poop and refuse to return money to adopters who returned their animal is bad business, irresponsible and dishonest. It is why there are complaints and bad reviews. No one is disputing that what Petabulls is doing is hard and takes a lot of dedication to do it. They are complaining about the bad business practices and the feeling of being swindled. I know for a fact that the dog I tried to adopt was re-homed within 2-3 days of being returned and was a much better fit in his new home which included another dog. I was given photos by the previous foster mom for reassurance that he was safe and happy. The website says "... every one of our fur~friends have the basic behavior training to automatically exhibit the skills required to be deemed "Ready-Made" family pets!" It simply isn't true. I'm still out over $1000 ($500 to Petabulls and $500 for all of the supplies I bought. I will continue to seek satisfaction by sending emails, calling and leaving messages (I assume they screen calls so they don't have to deal with unhappy people) and possibly legal action. I would like info on the "Board of Directors" who were supposed to consider my "refund request". I have reported them to the Better Business Bureau (again w/ no response from PetaBulls to my complaint) and despite the fact that you likely will not get a response, I encourage everyone to report them. I wish I had read the reviews here first before dealing with them and looked elsewhere. read more

Wish I could give zero stars. You should read ALL reviews of this organization BEFORE looking at their dogs!!! I found a wonderful dog at one of her adoption events and adopted him despite the fact that Mare raised the adoption price when she saw I'd fallen in love with him. He is the sweetest dog, totally worth it, and I'm so happy we saved him from Mare, but the dog has been a money pit, needing vet care, and expensive training to help him deal with his SEVERE anxiety. Mare supposedly had the dog for three months before I adopted him, and yet he was 30lbs under weight and suffering from horrible yeast infections in his ears, and a yeast infection on his elbow which she either didn't know about, or chose not to disclose to me. Also the dog was advertised as "Cat Friendly," which is absolutely not true and this was evident immediately upon trying to introduce them. Had anyone really been keeping the poor dog in their home with a cat, they would know that he was not cat friendly. We are working with a professional trainer to try to get the dog and cat to the point where they can be in the same room together, but we will never be able to leave them alone in the house together. Our lives have been completely changed because we have to keep the cat closed off in a separate section of the house. Oddly, right after I filled out Mare's "Adoption Questionnaire" I got one of those unexplainable nagging feelings that said, " something isn't right here." In hindsight, and after reading the other reviews, I'd say that was my sixth sense telling me not to get involved with this super shady business. My heart breaks for some of the other reviewers who have had such horrible experiences with Pet a Bulls. Shame on her if she's using helpless animals as way to rip people off! read more

We adopted a dog form Mare, and not only was her advertised age incorrect, but she didn't have her current shots, even though we were told she was up to date on her vaccinations. She had an umbilical hernia which was not fixed during the spay, as well as her spay happening too soon after giving birth, so now she's incontinent. My vet thinks that she has a back injury from living her life in a crate, which was also not stated. Mare is a crook, when I tried to contact her after all of this she would not answer the phone, and when my vet contacted her to try to get the vaccination information, she did answer, told them she was busy and that she would call them back, and then never did. She is a very sweet dog, don't get me wrong, but I feel like all of this should have been disclosed before I forked over $300 for her. I could have gone to the pound, paid $20 gotten a fixed fully vaccinated dog, with everything being disclosed, as well as getting 6 months worth of heartworm medication. I feel like this company is a cover for a hoarder. I needed to use the bathroom while I was there, she was really hesitant to let me use it, but when I did walk into her house it smelled like literal animal sh**, I should have taken that as a red flag. read more

We had a great experience with this organization. We initially requested to see a specific dog on their website but after talking with Mare she decided that dog was not a good match for our high energy young dog, and she was right! (This dog was in the same foster home as a dog Mare recommended for us.) This tells me that she truly puts her rescue dog's needs first. The dog Mare recommended should have been a good match since he was the same sge as our dog and also high energy, but the dogs just didn't like each other. So although we left the foster mom's house without a companion for our boy, I appreciate Mare's honesty and the foster mom, Julia, for her kindness and giving us plenty of time to see if our dog was a match for one of their small dog rescues. read more

The woman who ran this thing convinced me to purchase a dog that she claimed to be housebroken, socialized, and "superb" a leash. By the end of my first day with the dog, it urinated on a rug, attacked two dogs, and was about as bad on a leash as any dog I've ever seen. So much so that my hands are still sore from trying to hold the dog near me. While I was there, the woman lectured me on my well behaved dog and her diet. The stuff that she recommended was exactly the food that my experienced veterinarian told me to avoid. The dog she gave me was also pooping almost liquid it was so soft. I went to return the dog and she threw the money back at me, outside, in the wind like a child having a temper tantrum. A man started chasing me and making threats. It bothers me a lot that these people now have my address and they have an off-kilter man threatening me. The people who run this are complete psychopaths who use false advertising to make sales. Then when you call them out on their lies they threaten and berate you. I think it's a wonderful thing to adopt a dog, but this is absolutely not the place to do it. Save yourself the pain and go with a place that has some standards of honesty and run by people who are functioning adults. read more

Zero stars. Mare had a hand in killing my dog. I adopted Kiva from her less than 2 months ago. He was truly remarkable but unfortunately, was suffering from a previous broken hip that Mare did not catch. Initially, she was apologetic and went with me to her Santa Fe vet. I was given the estimate of $4,000 for his surgery. She then referred me to Village Vet in Bosque Farms because it was less expensive. I raised the funds for the surgery. Mare stopped answering my calls when I requested she return his adoption fee to go towards physical therapy. Then, this brute of a vet performed a careless surgery and I had no choice but to end Kiva's suffering with euthanasia. Shame on you, Mare for not stepping up. Kiva did not deserve to die like this. You have caused me a great deal of pain and suffering. Do not adopt a pet from this woman. She is cold-hearted and will likely hang up on you, anyway. read more

I want to start by saying I love my baby, and am so glad that I have her. I adopted her in 2016. This poor baby was so emaciated, had butt worms and was covered in spots that turned out to be a combo of fungus and bite marks. The vet that she goes to said it looked like she had been attacked by another dog recently. Mare insisted that we take the poor baby immediately even though we didn't have the fee. She said she'd wait because noone else wanted her because of her hyper personality. I love this dog with all my heart and it breaks when I think that she came from a bad situation from a non-profit rescue that claims that they have dogs best interest in mind. I have my doubts that these animals are assessed behaviorally before being placed in homes. The dog we adopted has serious allergies that were never mentioned when we adopted. The two dogs also attacked a cat. The dogs were advertised as being cat friendly. While attempting to surrender the dogs, Mare has continuously ignored us. We have been nothing but polite and are dealing with heavy hearts with this process to start off with and this has just made it so excruciating. We wonder about the professionalism of this non profit along with its attempt to resolve concerns. Do not adopt from this agency. Update: after a report to better business bureau after 2 weeks of no response, this finally was enough for Mare to contact us. I am extremely disappointed in the professionalism at Pet-a-bulls. My partner and I adopted a dog back in April 2020. After 3 months, a Pitbull training class and a professional assessment of the dog by a behaviorist we made the incredibly tough decision to bring our dog back. This was due to his temperament not being suitable for children that my partner and I are hoping to have in the next few years. When we reached out to Mare, she avoided my texts and calls and only responded when I called from a different number. Once we threatened to bring him to a shelter in ABQ she finally reached out. We stayed in communication for 3 days and she said she would be able to take him back early in the week. After that text she completely ignored my partner and I once again. We are trying to uphold our contact with her but she has not come close to meeting her end. This has already been a painful process which she has made INCREDIBLY difficult. I reached out to news about it because my dog got distemper and my Vet confirmed it was from a month ago and she got it from Las cruces shelter . I called lass cruces shelter and they confirmed it. Confirmed that distemper and parvo is at their shelter and it could've come from them. I was deveseted and told mare and she thought I wanted my money back. I didn't wanted my dog cured since she told me it was just a lil sick, never scheduled the neutter appointment either. My dog is dead. Mare doesn't care. I was looking to adopt and found what we were told was going to be the perfect dog for our multi-animal home. The adopted dog ended up attacking my dog causing him to need stitches and racking up a 450$ vet bill. After returning him to petabulls to find him a better suited home, I was offered a Job out of state and could not continue to look to adopt at that time. I requested a refund and after almost 4 months of attempts to reach Mary (without any responses whatsoever) I received a refund check for half of what I paid for the adoption. All in all it cost me $550 just to end up with a traumatized dog and no communication from Mary. I am beyond frustrated and feel like she sent me something just to shut me up as I resorted to emailing and texting her daily for the past two weeks just asking for any kind of communication that she was indeed receiving my attempts to be in touch with her. I wanted so badly to love this place. I sent an email one night explaining my situation: a seasoned vet tech who lost her canine soul mate to cancer 4 months prior. While looking at the website the next morning, I saw a dog that I was interested in (while I was out of town for the death of a family member). I called Mare at 10 mins to 10am and she not only was distracted but not interested in talking to me (despite the pet profiles saying people that call have a higher chance of adopting the dog). I filled out the application and waited for a phone call back. 830pm (1030pm where I am at right now) I'm getting a call. I explain I'm interested in a certain dog but I won't be home until 5 days later. I get a "he won't be available that long" and a "call me back when you're back in town". I ask what the dog is like and all I get is "he's an alpha male". Short but absolutely NO detail whatsoever, Mare seems annoyed I am asking questions, doesn't act interested in adopting a dog out to me. I have made pets my career for over 10 years, cared for them, know about behavior and health, and also spent over $6k on multiple "second" opinions trying to make sure my previous dog did in fact have cancer; went to specialists, multiple doctors, exploratory surgery, and multiple medications and treatments to come up empty handed followed by euthanasia. We've got everything from experience to brains to money. Honestly, she made a mistake by not acting interested in adopting a dog to me. I'm not sure what she wants. I'd do ANYTHING. Literally anything for my pets. I will go to the shelters to find a dog. I tried here and this experience just sucked. read more

I read the reviews on here and it is really weird how many negatives experiences people have had. I had such the opposite experience. I went and got my little Luna (called Sapphire at the time) and was told she had heartworm and Mare gave me the name of the vet that was treating her, the bills were paid I just had to care for her and take her to her appointments. It all went smoothly, Mare stayed in contact and made sure Luna had all her medications for the whole 2 months she was undergoing treatment. I now have a happy healthy dog who is the light of my life. I have since sent some updates to Mare and always receive responses from her. read more

About a week after having the dog, she started showing teeth and started attacking our dogs in which we had to return the dog. we went to pet-a-bulls rescue to see a dog that we really loved and wanted, we have had many other dogs before and are good dogs trainers and have always loved our dogs. When we got there we went inside the gate and wanted to meet a specific dog but she said that the dog would not match his owner's personality because he was not "alpha male enough" so after being told that many times we left because it was obvious that she did not want to sell us that dog simply based on her assumptions of the owner after meeting him for 2 minutes. I started the adoption process for two lovely babies girls before some events in my life forced me to give them back to PetABulls. $600 had been put towards them to adopt, and I oversaw a new, loving family adopt the girls at an event- paying $1000 for the pair in full. While I was in the process of adopting the girls, Mare was great: flexible, accessible, and very helpful. As soon as events in my life forced me to relinquish control and seek a refund for the $600 I had put forth however, the tune changed. Mare ignored all my emails, calls and text, with the only communication being that she had a board meeting and would notify me the state of my refund request shortly thereafter. Fast forward about a month, and still no word. I believe she's hoping I'll just go away and she can just keep the $600, but the disrespect she has shown me is completely unacceptable. She continues to ignore my calls, texts, and pleads for even a simple answer and explanation. I had nothing but good things to say about this business initially, but now their true colors have emerged. A lack of professionalism, poor transparency, rude, blatant avoidance, greed, and outright hanging up on me when I have been nothing but pleasant and patient have all forced me to start seeking other avenues of compensation and acknowledgement. I'd recommend going elsewhere- there is a bevy of other animal shelters that are much more affordable and have more upstanding individuals running them. read more

Petabulls can be a little disorganized at times, but they always always have the dogs' best in mind. I got my dog Titus, an Amstaffterrier/lab(?) mix from them four months ago, and I couldn't be happier! He was rescued, along with his two siblings, from a high-kill shelter and they were all covered in fleas and suffering from shelter shut-down. Petabulls places all their dogs in shelters so the dogs get a chance to get adjusted and socialized and adopters are able to talk to their potential fur baby's foster and learn how the dogs truly are, good and bad! My 8 year old daughter and I found a dog that we wanted to adopt and were ready to take home but apparently Mare gave the dog to someone else right out from underneath us. When I took him back, they said they couldn't refund my adoption fee because it was considered a donation to a non-profit organization and had already been reported to the IRS. Worst experience ever trying to attain a pet. I looked around and found an animal with a good story and I was assured this animal was non-violent. As it turns out the dog attacked everybody from the cat to the local dogs at the dog park. This dog was not a pitbull. No less than 24 hours after receiving the dog I had called Mary the main contact and also the person that I bought the dog from. to let her know that the dog attacked me. I never received a phone call to see if I was okay or if the dog was okay I only received text messages more than 12 hours later instructing me to call a third party. Mary was happy to take my money but she was not very nice once I had a problem. I've already talked to the Attorney General's office about this matter and I would advise you to stay away from this organization just based upon the evasive behavior immediately following the transaction of money. After several unanswered calls, messages, and emails I was left disappointed that I was never contacted after being told she would call me back. I asked a friend to call while I was busy at work. He informed her he would like to pick up the dog tomorrow to which she scoffed and said well I'll contact you after the appointment today.... once again no response..... extremely disappointed with the unprofessional attitude and inability to respond to someone just looking for a friend. read more

I would beg anyone to avoid this "charity." As a seasoned pittie owner it was natural for our family to look at a rescue foundation for pits. We found this group on Pet-Finder when we were seeking our next family dog. Drove 2 hours to meet a "healthy well socialized puppy." Instead we found at minimum a "young dog" that we still fell in love with but was not exactly what we were told we were getting before meeting in person. We did park introductions with our current dog who IS well socialized with other dogs and all seemed to go well so she came home with us. We learned while at the park, she had severe worms that we had to treat with high priced meds. Since they foster the dogs in homes with packs of dogs, she was not aggressive initially towards our dog. It is pretty normal for a dog that has been dumped into a pack to not show aggression. Unfortunately one on one was not the same. We ended up having to surrender our dog to a no kill shelter because of her aggression towards dogs and the organization did not return text, phone or email for over 1 1/2 months. At the shelter we worked directly with an officer who specialized in dog fighting in the NM area. She immediately recognized that our beautiful "puppy" was not a puppy at all. She looked at the paperwork that was provided to us by Pet-A-Bulls which said she was 8 months old upon adoption (only had her 4 months) and identified she was at least 2 years old. We explained all our failed training attempts, reintroductions to our dog and reassured us that we were doing the right thing at surrendering her. In addition that Pet-A-Bulls is notorious for homing dogs that have fighting in their bloodlines. Some can be introduced into homes and others sadly need to be euthanized due to quality of life. This organization is unable to see those lines nor has the proper training to home these types of dogs. read more

Mare is completely unprofessional and a scam artist. I went to look at a dog she had and took my MIL's dog for introductions since they would be around each other occasionally. The dog I brought snapped at the one we were looking at so we looked at a different one but he had medical stuff going on so she wasn't willing to adopt him out for at least two weeks. Ok understandable and I was fine with it. Well she wasn't responding to my texts about him after a week so I figured she adopted him to someone else. A few weeks later my mom went to look at a dog mare had and mare literally started talking smack about me to my mom because the dog I brought snapped at one of her dogs. My mom told mare she was interested in a dog but was not set up for her yet and was about to work more than two weeks straight with no days off to work with the dog. Mare made my mom feel forced into taking the dog anyways and when she picked up the dog mare told her that she better not bring her back. My mom needed a dog that got along with cats because she has two, has no prey drive and is good on a leash, all things mare told my mom this dog was. She is horrible on the leash, has tried attacking the cats every time she sees them and when outside she tries attacking any small animal she sees. She freaks out and goes nuts if she even hears something outside on the street and She has even shown aggression towards my 8 year old brother. My mom tried contacting mare for weeks about the dog and finally got a short response to take the dog to animal humane. So now my mom is out $300 from pet a bulls and another $45 for the surrender fee for animal humane. Mare didn't respond about a refund and tried to blame my mom for the dog being like that. She isn't placing dogs in homes that are suitable for them and because of that she is putting animals and people in danger. Save your money and adopt from a rescue organization that actually cares about what's best for the animals instead of just trying to get a quick buck. My mom will be reporting mare to BBB. read more

We got our female mixed pitbull on 10-21-20 from Petabulls. She was very sweet and easy to train, no issues with other dogs/people. Having had rottweilers for 24 years, a mixed pitbull was new to us. I can not over emphasize, that lots training and not over simulating her to elements she was not use to are a big factor. She just received her AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen ). I plan on enrolling her in low impact agility and trying to see how she does with a tracking class. She pays regularly at a doggie daycare, is happy to have new people come to our house, loves to go for car rides. She is now not afraid of the vacuum cleaner, mop bucket, laundry basket, etc.,etc. Getting dog from anywhere a training plan is a must or failure will occur. We are looking into getting a brother for her from Petabulls for our little girl. Again training and not expecting the new dog to know everything I want it to know initially is a plan for success in my opinion. One must be willing to put in the time,effort, and have patience.
