Came to the westside Animal Shelter to Adopt a cat. I didn't have a specific cat in mind just looking. They had so many beautiful, fun, loving cats available that it was pretty hard to choose just one to take home. But we eventually found the one cat and took her home that same day. It was a very quick process getting all the paper work done. They provide you with a box to take the cat in. The people were very nice and helpful. Willing to answer questions and more!

Very helpful and friendly staff. I had no wait and got all my questions answered. Was very happy with my service and will recommend. I'm also very appreciative of the free services they offer like this week's offer of free microchipping.

If his original family does not pick him up, he could be ours.

The drive out to the Westside Animal Welfare Department can be long for some residents of Albuquerque. Some tease by saying, "Pack a lunch." if they know you are driving out there. If you love the animals, it is worth the ride. The facility is nice. There is an exercise area on the south side of the premises. The dogs are systematically given breaks, and I have witnessed the dogs utilizing this area. Plus, the workers/volunteers give the dogs enough walks. And, the kennels are clean. There are not as many cats at this location, so the few that are there do have clean holding areas. I feel sorry for the cats more that I do the dogs because I did not see a play area for the cats at this westside location. The volunteers and animal handlers deserve all five stars; all of those people were helpful with good work ethics. I like how they are kind to all living beings. That team of course are great workers (even if they are not getting paid) because they treat everyone how they would like to be treated. ON A BAD NOTE: The only reason this place lost two stars was from one of the employees at the front; she was rude, and I had to kill her with kindness -- a lot of kindness -- before she showed me an ounce of respect. How odd that she works for the city and possesses such a rotten front. She looks down on you right off the bad. Thank you for judging a book by its cover. Does she treat her coworkers like that? I hope not. So that I would not have to deal with her attitude, I requested to talk to her manager. He is much, much better (five stars for him). If in the event that you have to deal with her, ask another worker to help you, or ask to talk to the manager. The more customers need to speak with him ought to tell him to correct her.

Many great fur babies. They say they close at 6 but you must get there at least before 5 to really interact with the pets. They have a cat area too just for cats. We adopted one kitty there during a five dollar adoption event!

This is an old shelter but the staff are genuine about the care they offer the critters. With animal control sworn & armed officers in & out of the parking lot & bldg, you would think that this might be a police service station..then you may spy the dog under their arm & reconsider. Its $80 for adoptions on pups (less than 5 months) $40 for older dogs. There is a reason for this! They want to get the older dogs out & re-homed. Older dogs succumb more readily to illness such as kennel cough then require to be put down. There are +'s to adopting an older dog; they're often housebroken already, less whiny & often know basic commands. This fee also includes the licensing, microchip, spay/neuter & shots. If you were to go on Craigslist to get a dog for free, for example, then go to the vet to alter the animal (which everyone needs to be doing to help reduce the unwanted pet populous & close to many thousands of euthanizations annually) you are going to pay much, much more. Some may say why bother? If your dog gets loose then picked up by the City. They will automatically alter the animal, chip the animal, notify you then charge you. Its the law to license your pet dog in the county; that's why. BTW cats are $10-$20..age depending. Many of the shelter's dogs are strays. The policy is to hold the animal for 4 days to see if the owner claims the animal. During this time if you happen to see a dog you would like to adopt, but its release date is not yet up, you can place a $10 priority hold. This means basically you are the owner if the original owners do not show. If you do not show up on the release day, then someone else can adopt the animal. If you change your mind you forfeit the $10 hold. There is a thirty day return policy for a refund of the fees if you decide the adoption will not workout for any reason. I have seen dogs go back just because they cannot be housebroken...which is really heartbreaking because that note is placed on their kennel card for all to see. :( For anyone with extra time on their hands, you can volunteer to take the dogs for walks. This is something I would totally do if I could, the exercise is the highlight of these sweet baby's day! ****they are closed on Mondays! Let the World beware!

I lost one of my pups a few months back and my other is lonely. I've been looking for another pup and decided to check out the facility. This new center is really nice, there is a ton of parking as it is kinda out there on its own. It is located about five minutes from El Modelo, just head south on 2nd from Bridge and it is super easy to find. They have a check in system and are trying to maintain social distancing by limiting capacity. You check in and then are free to walk through and meet the dogs and/or cats. If you see one you'd like to spend more time with, you just tell them and you can interact with them further. I found that they had some really great dogs and I could see they had a good amount of cats too. I met a really cute pup named Luna and even brought my pup to meet her but had some concerns, mainly how much larger he is than she was. Anyways, definitely recommend checking them out!

Their facility is bright, clean, open, and welcoming. Founded in 1965, Animal Humane is New Mexico's oldest animal welfare organization, and it shows in the care and dedication they provide. When I adopted her, the process was simple, efficient, and fairly priced. Lately, I've been thinking about how I can give back to my community, and the first place that came to mind was Animal Humane. I signed up to volunteer through their website, and they responded quickly--I was able to attend an orientation within two weeks. The orientation was incredibly informative, not just about the organization's mission, but also about the many ways volunteers can get involved. Since then, I've been volunteering in their on-site low-income pet food distribution center, and it's been amazing to see their mission in action. If you're looking to adopt a pet or find a meaningful way to give back, this is the place. Thank you, Animal Humane, for bringing so much joy into my life!

Last week I brought in a dog that came to my door crying, that I can only describe as "emaciated." I kept the dog overnight and observed that he was so hungry he literally was choking in his food. It was hours before he peed he was so dehydrated and drank lots of water. When I brought him to the shelter, the intake officer took a look at his body condition and said "omg that is extreme!" The dog was literally a skeleton. according to owners who claimed him, and dog was released to (the same day I brought him in) he was only "gone one day." No dog gets that thin in a day. My opinion is he was not being taken care of. Today I called the shelter to find out his status. I was told he was sent home to owners same day he came in. Evidently they did not have to account for the poor condition this dog was in! I thought this shelter advocated for the animals; clearly that is not the case. It will be a cold day in hell before I bring in an animal like the one I am describing. I will deal with it in a way that will truly help the animal. Wow, I almost donated to them.... ohhh nooo, not me, not ever. I have photos of this dog, but not posting because it is not helpful and it is downright shocking.

When we learned the adoption fee was over $400, we simply said that the adoption fee wasn't really within our budget. We never said we couldn't afford to care for a dog--we were only referring to the one-time adoption fee. At that point, we were told they would not show us any more dogs because they felt we wouldn't be able to afford one. We were completely refused the opportunity to meet any other dogs based solely on that comment. I absolutely understand that rescues have a responsibility to ensure animals go to loving, financially responsible homes, and I support screening adopters. However, making that decision without asking a single question about our finances, our experience with pets, or our ability to provide long-term care felt incredibly judgmental and unfair. I had just lost my best friend of 14 years, and instead of being treated with compassion, I left feeling embarrassed and judged. A one-time adoption fee is not the same thing as being financially capable of providing a loving, stable home for a pet. I hope Watermelon Ranch will reconsider how they approach these conversations in the future. Asking questions and getting to know potential adopters before making assumptions would create a much more compassionate experience for people who are genuinely trying to give an animal a forever home.

I keep Maddie and Sam up to date on Skittles' progress. Since she had been there the longest, they wanted to make sure that we would keep her. I've read some of the not so nice reviews and I'm disappointed that people think that this is just a simple process. Animals aren't disposable items that you can just toss away. But too many people think that way. WMR staff thinks hard about letting someone adopt. It has to be the best possible fit. They don't want to see any of their rescues come back, except to visit. :) The staff and volunteers do their very best to care for all these animals.
