If you have a heart report this place to ASPCA or local authorities. There was no AC and all the animals looked lethargic, possibly even sick. I witnessed the man who was working roughly carry around a guinea pig that was SCREAMING (I didn't even know they could do that!!!) and then he THREW it in to a pen with other animals. It was so stressed and breathing heavily and trying to hide. It absolutely broke my heart seeing animals kept in this condition and treated so poorly. Actually left this place in tears after seeing small defenseless animals handled so rough and treated with such cruelty. This place has got to close its doors!! It's summer and I just went in the store. It was very hot in the store. Over by the puppies it seemed even a bit hotter. There were fans placed all about but none of them were on. The smaller animals had it worst, they don't do well with high temperatures. They all looked dead, I was petting a hamster and was about 80% sure it was deceased. It eventually moved but it was not doing well. This place is a dump. The staff seemed helpful but, the place was disgusting. I feel bad for the poor animals that have to be there. read more

I don't believe they should sell puppies. It is great that they are rescue dogs. But this one specific 90$ terrier has been in there for a full year in the same place. It is quite depressing. She's not the only one. I have seen many dogs come in and never out of here. It is very humid in there, but I can understand because being so big, AC is expensive and it wont kill the dogs (not right, but money wise). But lets go step by step shall we? Birds; Average birds. They are in an open cage with clipped wings. Nice lovebirds, 40/50 budgies to choose from, some really nice. Cockatails are pretty big. Finches are located way in the back with the dogs, so I really wish they would move them....Other than that, none are hand tame and freak out when a hand comes near. Like I said, they are average, just as good as petsmart/petco birds. Rodents; Today I saw a sign reading that they kept male/female hamsters together. If so....dear lord. They will have plenty of feeders. The guinea pigs are average and will run one. One especially neurotic one freaked out (I think that specific one is just extra timid). Other than that the reviews about yellow urine stains on the bunnies are true. Most will let you pet them which is nice. Overall they have less than average rodents, but with care you wouldn't tell the difference Reptiles/Amphibians: Could you honestly go wrong with reptiles? Food? Check. Heating Source? Check. Clean water? Check(ish). Boom now you have reptiles exhibited. They were average and honestly in much bigger cages than petco/petsmart gives so they get an above average for reptiles. Fish: Oy. Dirty Dirty Community Tanks and Plant tanks. I would not buy one fish without quarantining it first to make sure they don't have a disease. The Cichlid/Semi-Aggresive side is however much nicer with very clean tanks. But they fish are all alive and that counts for something. They look unhealthy, yes. But I have seen worse, at least the nasty tanks don't have a single fish in it. The betta cups are dirty and somewhat unmaintained, but if you sell bettas in cups, I don't expect much period. Overall a below average job on fishes. Cats; They are in cat house thingies. I don't know the name but they are pictured here. They don't seem happy in there, but hey it is not profitable to give them a yard to run around in so I accept that on a business side. They seem healthy and have clean fur and cages so honestly not that bad. Above average for cats Dogs: Lord. I feel horrible. They wouldn't be any worse than barkworks (who sell puppy mill puppies btw) if they had air conditioning. That ugly humid feel makes it unbearable for me. Now imagine the dogs in the glass cages. Ventilation would make it somewhat better. And what do they do with the dogs like that terrier I listed who has been there for so long? Most likely the dog gets traumatized and if I bought it (which I may if I find a parent for her) It would run in circles all day because that is all it knows how to do. Not exactly their faults, I mean their alternative is death. But they aren't truly living now. So below average for dogs. OVERALL: This place is just like any other pet store, it just has no central cooling unit. If I had room, I would buy pets from here (even the fish because I would quarantine them) because health wise they are fine and just as good as the big chain ones. I never like seeing dogs in cages sold because they get traumatized so I am a sucker for them. If you want anything OTHER than a dog I wouldn't bar this place from your list. If you want a dog come take a look. These are rescue dogs. They are "dying" in a mental sense. If none of them steal your heart, go to the shelter just please, do not buy. read more

Uhhhh no if I'm dropping $400 in your store you better give great customer service, aside from that it is dirty in here. My wife and I have always had good experiences at Pet City. It has been clean whenever we have been there. We bought a puppy there in October 2011 which was very healthy. We bought a canary there 2 years ago. The other day it hurt its leg. We brought it in and the owner took care of it for 2 days. When we picked it up to take home he gave us detailed instructions for taking care of it. The bird is back on its feet and its recovering well. My wife owns her own pet sitting service and dog training business and buys all her training supplies there. The owner, George, always gives out free treats and provides superior service. He is very knowledgeable and caring. We are happy to recommend this store very highly. read more

It's uncommon for me to write reviews, but this issue kept eating away at my conscious each time I drove past Pet City on Whittier Blvd. A few months ago I purchased some, what I thought was quality dog food(EVO) from Pet City. As I poured the food into the bowl it just didn't look right, so I decided look up the SKU/Product ID on the internet to see if it was part of a EVO RECALL. Low and behold it was not only part of a previous EVO RECALL (last years), but it was also past the expiration date. I was surprised and concerned because earlier in the year I had gone into Pet City to see if they carried this particular EVO type and the manager indicated that they did not due to a RECALL by the EVO manufacturer. So, when I went in to the store several months later to see if they had restocked the EVO brand/type, I was originally pleasantly surprise to see that they had, not knowing that it was the actually the RECALL product that should have been returned to the manufacturer or thrown away. Luckily I didn't give this food to my dog, but I wonder how many purchased and unknowingly fed their dogs the RECALL dog food. Most of the dogs are from SEAACA.. I know they get some from their customers if they tell them they have them. The animal shelter in downey. Every time I go in the cages are always clean, everybody has food and water. They charge those prices because they feed them, clean the cages... PAY! The lady to feed and clean them, and they also keep them up to date on the shots. If you want want to pay those prices then tell them you want one that hasn't been fed and doesn't have shots or for it to be fixed. Then you can go do it yourself and pay way more. Also, I know they don't make money off the dogs. None at all. Give them a chance, they are a mom and pop store that is trying to compete with pet smart and pet co. I went to this store this afternoon to buy a couple of collars for my dogs. The place is well lit, no unusual odors for a pet store, staff are friendly and addressed my questions the best they can. There are some puppies for sale that looks clean and healthy. Yes, they are in cages, same cages that I have seen at the Humane Society or any other pet stores. I've always had a great experience at this store. The owner is very knowledgeable and concerned about my animals. He helps me out with food selections with my very elderly and finicky cat and she responds well to his suggestions. The pups they sell have been rescued from the pound and look well cared for. The place doesn't smell the best. But their dogs are from shelter or human society. They don't save all but they do save some. Yes, it is not going to be free but we know that by offering the dogs or cats free, like craiglist, they end up being the bait dogs or abused by evil people because it is "free". Ok, so I upped these guys a star. The replacement finch ended up having a tumor or growth on its face and later died. Again, third animal we purchased from here and and had some type of health issue. I upped them a star simply because they have good customer service and the owner decided to refund us. Still, we will never go for another pet there. Update on the hamster, still chubby and loved. The dead ficj was replaced by yet another hamster. Now we have Barry Randalph the III and Johnny Maxx. Both teddy bear hamsters. read more

Staying in Whittier after coming over from the UK on holiday. Went in to have a look at the animals today. We were shocked at the fish in small pots (although we have seen this in another pet shop here) and the dogs in the cages. All the other animals we thought looked ok. Seeing the dogs there in the cages was upsetting and we left. Never seen anything like that. I've tried to find a number of somewhere to report it over here... I used to live in Hacienda Heights and did not know my way around. I needed to buy some Canadae dog food. I stumbled upon this place. The banner outside reads something like dogs for adoption. I walked inside and saw a wall of puppies inside aquarium-size holding containers. Some are panting and some are on their backs going ape crazy from boredom or perhaps feeling claustrophobia. The banner outside gives you the impression, the dog you might be "adopting" was once from a shelter and this guy (owner) rescued them to give them a second chance in life. No, these dogs are from puppy mills. A handful were showing signs of distress and neglect. I witnessed this back in 2009. I'm ashamed I did not do more. This place needs to be reported to the L.A. County Animal Control Dept. In fact, I will report this place with them. Another dog store in Cerritos is under investigation right now for possible animal abuse or cruelty. Someone video a dog panting b'cuz it's obvious there's not much air going inside the acrylic cage (there were only few drilled holes in front of the panel). These people are in for the business, using words like "adoption" and "rescue", but they could careless about the dogs and cats. They're only for ONE THING-- TO MAKE MONEY $$$ ! read more
