The wait was terrible, especially for it only being my pet and one other pet there. They sat there as my dog was bleeding from his mouth everywhere, very little compassion, only focusing on how we'd be able to pay. Mind you there aren't very many "emergency" pet hospitals around. I drove 30 minutes to sit for 2 hours trying to figure out how we'd be able to pay them. And then another hour after finally being able to find enough money, while they did what they needed to do. This is a very difficult review to leave. Last Saturday I was already in a state of distress because my human best friend died the Saturday before. I wanted to sleep all day and I heard my cat Sylvia crying and I had the air conditioner going so I thought maybe it was thundering outside. So I called her and then I heard her try to jump on the bed and then she fell. So I picked her up and put her on the bed and her back leg wasn't working. I thought maybe she got her claw stuck in something like it just hurt or worst case scenario broken leg. And when I tried to put her into her carrier, I couldn't put her leg in. So my mum and I cradled her in a towel and took her to the pet emergency treatment center. They took us right back to a room there really wasn't any wait time or anything like that. she wasn't a very enthusiastic cat towards other people besides myself so they needed to sedate her so I signed off so they could treat her. I have been here once before not with Sylvia, but one of our memory care unit cats at my job and they were so good. So this was the first place that I thought of. And I had the same vet come back in to tell me that in a very nice way with a lot of words that I would have to put her down. I don't remember a lot of it because it was at the exact same time that my human best friend had died a week before. They were unbelievably kind and generous. And her last moments were with me and her Grammy. I received the very thoughtful card maybe just a couple of days after it's only been a week today. I just wanted to express how grateful I am to the staff and how well they took care of her and not only her but myself. You treated her last moments and myself in a way that it doesn't make it easier not having her here, but that she didn't suffer. She had one black whisker, and after she had taken her final breath, I asked the vet if I could please have that whisker. I wish I could remember the name specifically to say thank you for being so kind to us. She came back in with she found two black whiskers and all of the colors of her fur. Thank you. read more

The techs stand around and gossip while the doctors are few and far between, rushing with patients. My pet was severely dehydrated and went hours without being seen, they discharged my pet without giving the fluids they ordered because the techs are too busy chatting. The techs loudly made jokes about euthanasia while visiting. INCREDIBLY INSENSITIVE AND SHOULD NOT BE A TOPIC OF HUMOR AT A HOSPITAL. Drive the 10 mins to a different emergency hospital. We brought our dog down on his death bed and we to be referred from our local vet to get an ultrasound. They would not give him an ultrasound without being admitted to their hospital. They wanted $8,000 dollars for two day stay and then he would get ultrasound they could have cared less about his health and more about one last money grab. There is not enough great praise I can give this whole hospital, from emergency to specialty. I travel over 2 hours just to ensure my pets get the best. I have been in the emergency room multiple times, with different cats. My cats, both Louie and Steven were patients of Dr. Eric Walsh - the best internal medicine doctor you could ever see. Louie was a long-term patient and everyone in the hospital knew him. He loved going there to see his friends. Dr. Knox was very instrumental in Louie's ongoing care also. If you have an elderly pet, I would always get a base ultrasound...that way you know what might be lurking inside, BEFORE a problem presents itself. All the personnel from front desk to critical care nurses and vet techs are all wonderful. If you care for you pets, understand that this level of medicine is expensive. They are prepared with the best technology and staffed with the best. Get insurance. Be prepared. If pet is elderly, get blood work updates and keep health records where they are accessible to you (24x7). Your pet may have an emergency at 2AM, but your local vet is not open then. Be thankful you have a hospital that can provide this excellent level of care. read more

This place is a joke!!! Took my dog here after he was hit by a car and we waited almost 2 hours to be seen. After he was taken back we waited another 30 minutes just to hear that he would need to stay to have stitches and given pain meds. We paid the bill and left. We came back for him up and everything was fine. We picked him up the next day and he was home for about 2 weeks recovering. We recently took him back to have stitches removed (which was included in our previous ridiculously priced bill) and waited another 2 hours for a 10 minute procedure. After asking multiple staff members ( to which no one knew when my dog would be taken back) they finally took him back. Would never recommend anyone to take their pets here as they have no urgency or sense of humility for your animal. read more

Called - a bit hysterical - when our dog had a seizure for the first time at 5:00 on a Sunday evening. The attendant who took my call was understanding, patient and very accommodating. The good experience continued after I arrived on site. I appreciate the triage' cases based on condition/urgency. The staff was personable patient and it was obvious they cared about their work and the pets they service. The care we got was thorough, detailed and top notch. They sent us home with all of the blood work results as well as detailed instructions. We also appreciated the follow up call the next morning and the fact they sent all of the records to our regular vet. read more

I have waited almost 5 months to post this review in hopes that there would be some type of resolution. We have had good experiences here over the years but our last one was a nightmare. I don't believe in our situation they even deserve one star. We took our cat in on Mother's Day due to him eating a lily petal that fell on the floor. Our boy was pretty sick when he got there. They took him right back to triage him and they told my husband they'd do blood work. This was at 11:10ish in the morning. An hour and a half later they called us back and gave us consents to sign for blood work, with a high and low estimate. I asked why the price range and they said in case his blood work indicated kidney failure and the need for fluids. We said yes, signed them and went back to the waiting area. I was already upset that it took that long to do the blood work. Over 4 hours later they called me back and went over the blood work results and what was happening with him. They gave me an estimate for more tests including abdominal x-rays, an ultrasound, an NG tube and a hospital stay up to 72 hours. The doctor, who isn't listed on the website, also mentioned euthanasia as an option. My husband and I discussed it, thinking he was on fluids all this time and we decided to pick him up the next morning and take him to our own vet. The vet tech who was in the room with us was incredibly rude and very unprofessional on how she spoke to us. I've never had a "medical professional" either human or animal care speak to me the way she did. Once we made our decision to have them keep him overnight and take him to our vet the next morning I asked if we could see him. We had not seen him at all. The vet tech rolled her eyes and went and got him. He had an IV cath in his arm so we still were assuming he was on fluids all this time. We said goodbye and told our boy we love him and I said I don't want to keep him off fluids any longer than a few minutes. That's when the tech told us that they had not started him on fluids. He was there for 6 hours and 50 minutes at that point without anything done aside of blood work. All but 7 hours a without any treatment. They started his fluids exactly 7 hours after he arrived with lily toxicity. I made them call us when fluids were started so that is how I know when they were started. Our Henry made it through the night and passed the next afternoon due to his kidneys completely shutting down. Our vet was amazing and they were waiting for him before they even opened, they took him back immediately upon arrival and got his fluids going again and starting meds and tests but at that point they couldn't save him. I filed a complaint with PETS. I received a phone call the end of July from a vet whom I believe is on PETS board to discuss things. He said nothing was done because the vet who took care of Henry said we didn't sign consent until 5:30 pm, which was 6 and a half hours after arrival. We signed consent for blood work and fluids at 12:45 not 5:30. He also told us that the vet told him that she spoke to us when the results came in at 2:45 when in fact we weren't called back to go over results until almost 5:00. The phone call accomplished nothing and he said he'd call back after the next doctor meeting. It's been over 2 months and we've heard nothing. I'm leaving this review in hopes that this doesn't happen to anyone else. I've talked to a few other vets at different practices and all have said, the best chance he had of survival would've been immediate fluids, which wasn't done. They are very money first verses patient first. We will never see any money back, which is ridiculous considering what was not done, and it won't bring our Henry back amyway, so our hope is to help others. We will never go back there, we will make the drive to any other Pet ER. The lack of treatment, the disrespect and unprofessionalism from the tech and the lack of treating a dying patient by the vet, and a bill for them to essentially do nothing to save his life is unacceptable. Would the fluids have saved his life? Maybe not, but we will never know, he was cheated out of that chance. He was alone in a crate or even possibly his carrier for 7 hours without treatment, probably in pain and I'm sure very scared. For now I will not mention names of providers in hopes that someone will do the right thing. Please be proactive, don't assume your fur babies are being taken care of, get up and ask questions. read more

I was told he probably has cancer, was given several options and was told I could call with a decision. The decision was to keep him comfortable for as long as possible and go with the recommended steroids. Called first thing Monday morning, was told NOBODY COULD HELP ME UNTIL THURSDAY!!! The vet said she would give me her email, but it was not with the paperwork. I told the woman on the phone that Thursday was unacceptable; she said she would get a message to the vet. We took our dog into pet emergency because he hurt his leg they took one X ray and charged us $1200, they then set up an appointment for us to talk to a surgeon about a possible operation telling us it wouldn't cost anything to speak to a surgeon .. As we were getting ready to leave they brought us a bill for $175.00 for taking to the surgeon for five minutes about a surgery that was going to cost over $6,000 ...every time you walk through the doors there it cost you a minimum of $175.00 even if they do absolutely nothing!!...they don't care about your pet , they only care about getting every penny they can scam from you!..,.the emergency center at Petco treated us much better with less costs! read more

So after 13 years with our Daisy, a little black mix with one white paw developed diabetes which just destroyed her. We took her to Pet Emergency who immediately got her as stable as possible but also told us the truth that Daisy was not going to make it much longer. I would anything for him. :) He was having an emergency and I called the Er Vet Clinic on Queen St. They were so nice on the phone and told me to come in anytime. The visit was great (even though my dog was still sick). They got his pain meds and made sure he was comfortable as we waited for the vet to meet with us. The nurses and vet took their time to explain everything. Eased my worries and took professional care of my boy. They were gentle and sweet to him, which is # 1. My husband and I have had our fair share of small animal ER emergencies and have used Blue Pearl three times, Metropolitan once and now PETS in Lancaster and all I can say is PETS is hands down the best of them all. Unlike Blue Pearl and Metropolitan money grubbiers that nickle and dime you to death, PETS was fair priced for a small animal ER in comparison to the other two AND their level of compassion was unparalleled. Never again will we take any of our pets anywhere else. If you love your pet take them here, they have a good majority of the right equipment, are fair priced for a ER ($110 office visit vs $165 plus at BP) and will not just try to run the bill up unnecessarily like both others do. Sadly our one visit there didn't give us the answer we wanted but we also weren't bent over financially to euthanize our terminal pup. Oh and to save money if ever in that situation. Take your pet with you if you have a nice place to bury it. Cremation can be expensive. read more

We had to bring our suddenly seriously ill cat here on Saturday late afternoon. She was having awful seizures. Nichole was our Tech and our doctor was Kristin Kicenuik. They were incredibly compassionate and helped us to accept that humane euthanasia was the only option for the cat we loved so much. They moved us to a quiet room and gently and sensitively helped us allow her to cross the rainbow bridge. We were touched and surprised by everything, including the sympathy and even the cost. I can't explain how absolutely horrible this place is. Absolutely no empathy or compassion displayed. Vet coldly told me about my beloved cat's condition and simply stated "Do you know what I am telling you?" Basically, through my fog of grief I got the idea that there were no options other than euthanasia. Additionally, no options were available to stabilize my cat to get him back home for home euthanasia. A receptionist coldly and flippantly asked about "after care" making sure to take my credit card prior to the "service" being performed. Then my cat was brought to me and I was given about 2 minutes before vet came in and hooked up syringe. She said "time for new adventures" and quickly administered the meds while my cat scratched me, urinated on me and meowed in pain. Then she quickly listened for a heartbeat and said he "is gone" and walked out. Perhaps she was in a hurry, I don't know. What I do know is that I will never be able to remember my beloved cat without tears and regret for making the horrible decision to take him to this place. read more

I was referred to PETS emergency medicine to help diagnose my very sick puppy. We saw internal medicine and it was mandatory we did an ultrasound ($600) which came back unremarkable. Dr. Walsh did not review my dog's chart, did not thoroughly examine my dog, and when he gave me the plan to try to diagnose my dog he asked me if I need to call anyone to ask permission. (I'm 35 years old, no I don't need permission from anyone to take care of MY dog, how condescending). Dr. Walsh prescribed doxy as a broad spectrum treatment as he did not know what else to do while waiting for test results. My immunocompromised dog had a reaction but everyone at PETS including Dr. Walsh said that's not possible. We decided to proceed with a biopsy as a diagnostic tool but when I asked for a new doctor, I was told that is not possible. So now I'm left with thousands of dollars of debt, absolutely no help for my puppy, and I need to start from square one and wait for an appointment with another specialist. All because Dr. Walsh did not give an appropriate standard of care and I asked for a new doctor. I would recommend you use anyone besides PETS because if you are paired with a vet you are not happy with, you either have to stick with their substandard care, or go to a new vet practice. read more

I had to take my kitty in unexpectedly. He wasn't doing well at all. Upon entering the receptionist was very nice, got all my info and a nurse was close by who took additional info and took Buckwheat back right away. My wait was not long till they called me in to explain what they had done so far with Buckwheat and what they needed to do to find out what was wrong. I wasn't surprised with the estimated fee, I knew it would be pricey, but I was at the ER vet on a holiday. In saying that, the fee was not totally outrageous considering all the testing they had to do. Long story short, my kitty ended up needing to be put down. Not the outcome I was expecting. LITERALLY EVERYONE was very nice, professional and compassionate with me and my situation. While I certainly was grieving, I couldn't have asked for better care in my situation. read more

We took our little Maggie last night... I thought she had a blockage or something wrong, and when we arrived, we were told it was an 8 hour wait. Understanding that they have no control over the time, as it depends on the amount of patients at that time, we of course waited patiently. We were discharged in about 3.5 hours, and the staff was extremely kind and friendly, and did not laugh in my face as they told me that I have simply been over feeding my chihuahua, and she is just a bit overweight, and was merely suffering from indigestion. Did I mention I tend to overreact sometimes...? I would absolutely recommend this establishment, as I saw them triage the serious cases and deal with emergencies as needed. Great concept but terrible execution. To begin, I believe the this clinic started out of a need and genuine concern for the animal community. I hope they can get back to that vision. A high level summary of our story: - Friday evening around 11 pm we brought our dog in for issues with her ears. It was acute in nature and due to her level of discomfort we though it was best to seek treatment. The doctor on staff provided injections and take home prescriptions. We were there ~ 3 hours and the cost was ~ $350. Our dogs treatment or face time with the staff was less than 15 minutes. - Saturday, our dog is a mess. Still in pain, not eating not taking her medication. We decide to head back the the clinic and arrive ~8 pm. - Saturday evening visit is a train wreck. Waited two hours in the waiting room while our dog was wincing in pain. This despite the fact we were just there within 24 hours. After two hours we get the same vet (out of respect for the profession I will not mention their name). A condescending, know it all with a million excuses as to why their initial treatment was unsuccessful. They cited our dogs breed as a complication. We have had the same breed of dog for over 20 years and knew they were deflecting. At hour 3, they present a treatment plan for ~ $400. We agree and wait. The waiting, excuses and incompetence continue for two more hours until we leave. This time with a bill for over $200 more than agreed to. Let me break this down for you based on the the amount of face time or treatment time our dog received. I am going to use numbers rounded down from the actual cost: Friday - We paid ~$23 per minute for the 15 minutes of "treatment" while waiting 2:45 hours. Saturday - we paid ~$40 per minute for the 15 minutes of "treatment" while waiting 4:45 hours. They provide no place for your dog to lay, they take them in several minute increments and bring them back so you are responsible. This is a business designed to profit off of people's desperation which is indicated in their terrible service. They prey on the factor that you love you pet and will endure any cost or time to get them the needed care. Think about it, who's going to leave?We are fortunate that we had the resources to pay for this pathetically poor service. If you do not, please don't worry as they provide numerous opportunities via posted advertisements for financing.I can only assume this arrangement benefits while you pay interest on a bill driven by incompetence and profit. I had to use PETS on a Saturday night when my cat had a health crisis and I decided he could not wait. Unfortunately, this ended up being a euthanasia. But the experience was as good as I could have expected, knowing on the way in that this was possible. They got us into an exam room after a short wait. The assistant/nurse and vet were patient and showed compassion for my situation. The vet offered me an alternative, which would have been extraordinary measures to buy another day or two before I had to do this. He also explained the euthanasia process so I would know what to expect. The staff put a shunt on my cat's leg, then brought him back with a blanket to lie on, and left me alone with him to say goodbye. They did not rush me. I didn't need a lot of time, but it was nice that they were willing to let me move at my own pace. Of course I stayed through the process, and talked to my cat until it was over. Even then, they gave me time with him. To pet his warm fur and see his shining eyes. When I finally broke down and had a good cry, the vet brought in some tissues and left me to finish. When I was ready to leave, they took him away. I had chosen individual cremation, which PETS handles through an area crematory that is used by many other vet clinics as well. They called about 10 days later, when his remains were back. They come back in a black box with his name on a plaque, and PETS does a paw print in some sort of putty that hardens when you leave it out for a week or two. PETS sent me a condolence card, which was a nice gesture on their part. The insert with me seeing my cat on a sunny hillside in the afterlife was creepy. Most religious theologies hold that animals do not have souls or an afterlife. And as a nonbeliever, I don't even think I do. But their intentions were good, if misplaced. As for cost, I didn't pay any more than I expected. PETS must staff itself like an ER, and they cannot refer every procedure to another place. So it is understandable that their services will cost more. That said, the bill for this from PETS was the same as what my regular vet quoted me previously. I was a bit surprised. I'm not sure if this means PETS is cheaper than I expected, or if my regular vet was expensive. Probably a bit of both. I had enough info from my regular vet to proceed to euthanasia without additional medical testing or procedures, so this probably kept the PETS bill down. read more

Our kitten was Frankie. Short for Frankenstein due to her having 3 different kinds of coats/colors. We adopted her after putting down our 2 most elderly cats in 2017 and 2019. I'm a sucker for woman in trouble and she was so tiny, underfed and bullied by the other cats in her cage she was the one I had to bring home. She turned out to be the sweetest, cuddliest best behaved kitten possible. Never peed anywhere but the litter box. Never scratched anywhere but the rug. Never hissed out our cranky 12 year old cat who had no interested in her and hissed enough for both of them. Was told later by regular vet she might have some issues including kitty herpes which might leave her prone to other issues. All of our older cats had special needs so daily meds or special food would never be a problem for us. It turns out she likely had dry FIP or Meningitis and after At 9 months and 5 trips to various vets over 2 weeks she was unable to move own her own and we had no choice but to put her down. Since it was a Super Bowl Sunday night we had to go to the local Pet Emergency Lancaster. This one was seemingly staffed by IRS and DMV, storm troopers and Josef Mengeles seemed to be in charge. Despite an empty parking lot and no other patients we could see everyone acted as if it was an imposition. After fighting to have her put down in the room with us rather than some secret back room procedure the vet techs were became extremely callas as they man handled our baby and made her scream and cry louder than she ever had before. Rather than a simple needle that would have put her to sleep before the needle was even removed the butchers insisted on shaving her front leg, installing a catheter needle and making her bleed all over my hand. They we so rough we almost walked out but she was suffering so much we needed to just do it. But they screwed it up. Dr Mengeles (not the real name) came in, used so much drug that Frankie cried from the amount of fluid they added. But she didn't die. She just went to sleep. Dr Mengeles again wanted to take her away to finish it in another room. I questioned, through my tears why it was this way. (At our regular vet our other senior cats got a quick needle to the leg and they we're gone quickly.) But Dr Mengele repeatedly berated and scolded us over the next 10 minutes for not letting them do it their way. I repeatedly told her to just leave us alone, I will sit and hold her in my arms as long as it took for the drugs to finally work. After repeated insults and scolding we walked out with the sleeping Frankie in my arms. 40 minutes later Frankie died in our home in her basket surrounded by her family. It's been 2 days I'm not crying for my lost kitty, I'm crying over the way my baby was treated. Avoid at all costs unless. read more

Brought my dog in at 8 am. It's 11:45 and my dog hasn't been seen yet. When I arrived at 8, there was one other person in the waiting room and she came in after me! When I asked what's going on, I was told that other pets more critical than mine came in. Nobody looked at my dog. How do they know? They said it would still be a "while" before they could see my dog. I walked out. Take your pet here only if it is a dire emergency and then keep your fingers crossed. read more

$300 for X-rays! When you have to make an emergency trip because there seems to be something your dog is choking on, they'll take complete advantage of your situation. The veterinarian was rude as well. Unfortunately, there's not too many 7/24 pet hospitals around. Just be prepared to pay big money. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. This place is a freaking joke. You call yourselves a 24/7 emergency place for pets and when someone is having an actual emergency you turn them away because you're full? What a joke. Tell them to go to another vet that's open 24/7. You're the only freaking place!!! My cat has had brown liquid constantly pouring from his anus and clear liquid soaking his back side. He is very lethargic, in distress, won't eat, won't even use the bathroom. My virtual vet said to get him seen asap cause it's most likely an adrenal gland burst and left to long he can die. Explained all this to them and still all they had to say was go somewhere else or wait to see if someone else can take you tomorrow. Which hopefully someone will on a Saturday. If my cat dies I'm for sure calling this place and expressing their lack of care and concern. I've never ever had an issue with this place but lately their customer care and service for the community sucks! How can you people even call yourselves an animal hospital? read more

I would give 0 stars but I had to select atl ast 1 to write the review. We sat for 2-1/2 hours before we even seen a technician, then it was another hour before we seen the doctor. All and all, 4 hours and and $331 later, they didn't help. Our dog is old and we know her she needs antibiotics for an bladder infection. The same thing happens twice a year for the last 4 years. But since the Vet knows more than all. She didn't want any to give them to us. But she did want to run $1000 worth of test for though! Very thoughtful of her ha!!! Took our puppy there to the lancaster office. Our puppy was in bad shape. It was like 6 in the evening. For 1 they had mask signs all over the place, which made me suspicious in the 1st place. Long story short, they took our pups temp said it was high, but gave her nothing. She could barely walk or stand up. We were there over 3 hrs and they basically did nothing for us, and didn't show any compassion whatsoever- sooo almost $300 later we left with no answers. Said they wanted to keep her over night, but for 2,500-over $3,000. That's absolute robbery. Anyhow, we ended up taking her to Columbia AH who was so much better in every way! They kept her over the whole weekend, and for a third of the money, also fixed our pup back to herself!!! read more

Came today for a cat around 12:30 and still waiting at 6:00 and the cat only had blood and urine work. Since we have to sit in our car we were told to go to Sheetz to use the bathroom (their restrooms are right inside the door, separate from any patient rooms, and the doc said we could but a nurse said we couldn't). So far, we dropped over $600 for a urine and blood tests, sat here for over 5 hours and we can't even go to the bathroom? I get COVID but how can Sheetz clean their bathrooms but you can't? Side note: We were told over about an hour and a half ago to pick up our cat but still here waiting. Wish we went elsewhere. read more

PETS fills a very important niche in Lancaster: to serve your pet when your veternarian or animal hospital is closed. They really will help you when everything else is closed, and you need someone to call. However, they are expensive; but if you care for your pet and your pet is having an emergency, it is the place to go. Our dog Bo was hit last night by a horse and buggy after he darted out the front door, across the street, and tried to take on that horrendous noisy horse. He lost out on the deal having his rear leg injured to the point that he was shaking and refusing to stand on it. It was past our Vet's hours, so off we went to PETS, after hearing positive (though expensive) remarks from a friend who had used them. PETS opens at 6 PM and stays open until 8 AM. We were seen immediately, and Bo was evaluated by a doctor (extremely nice), sedated, and given X-Rays which revealed no breaks (but yes, a BB was found in his side, compliments of his pre-adopted life in Houston...bunch of savages). He was given meds, a radar-dish collar in case he tries to eat his raw, shaved leg, and a CD with X-Rays in case our Vet needs them...and sent on our way. Total time in PETS, from entry to exit, was hour and 10 minutes. Awesome. Plus, they called the next morning to see how Bo was doing, and also sent the information to our regular vet, who also called to check in. Nice touch. The staff was super friendly, knowledgable, and even cleaned up after Bo, in his sedated state, emptied his doggie colon at the front desk. The facility, located one block south of the Lancaster train station, is clean, well-lit, and has off-street parking. Nice place. So...READ THIS CAREFULLY...this is a PET Emergency Room. You don't go to the ER for a cold; you don't go there for a nosebleed. You go there for EMERGENCIES. Yes, ER visits are costly...but if you can't make it through the night and need to be seen, you do what you have to do. Otherwise, you take two and call your vet in the morning. Honestly, it's reassurring that such a facility exists. And fortunately, my wife had taken out pet insurance when we adopted BO, knowing that he was a flight risk, and who knows what that could lead to. So, the cost was not really and issue...whew. But, otherwise, we'd be out $350 on the visit. 5-stars for the concept, necessity, and service; one-star dediction for the price of admission...which, in reality, might not be that much less than the regular vet. So, use sparingly. Use wisely. Use if necessary! read more
