Love coming here to give my dog a bath. I do the 4 for 3 deal which makes it easier on the wallet when she gets so stinky. The baths are cleaned regularly, so you don't see a ton of other dogs' hair in the tubs. There are 2 choices for shampoo and 1 for conditioner, warm water rinse, and hot air blow dryer. The steps are easy for med/large dogs to climb up. You may just want to pick up the little ones and set them inside. Easy to use bathing stations with waterproof aprons provided for all the times your dog shakes. Treats and water are available too. They used to have it in a section in the back for that service on the weekends only. They now have made the whole section privately which looks very professional. Monday to Friday open from 2:30- 7:30. Saturday starts in the morning as well. No appointment made. When you get to the store- use your phone to scan the bar- enter zip code 94501 and you reserve the spot. They don't let you wait in the store. They will notify you when your turn about to be ready. Very reasonable price. All the prices are posted that you know what service you want. No nail trim at this time unless it is necessary for medical purposes. For weekdays- you can scan the bar at 11 to reserve the spot. They can only have certain spots for the day so they close the line after it gets full. read more

Picked up two toys, a $3.79 toy and a $17 one. Not going to lie, my friend's dog destroyed the sale one within 5 minutes. The $17 skunk shaped toy held up just fine! Might have to update this review when it finally gets shred to pieces. The staff clearly love animals. A 3 month old pit bull puppy came in and all of the associates ran up to her and you could see the puppy love on everyone's faces. The back has a doggy wash station. I consider Mona to be a royal highness and would only bathe her at a facility that is up to par with my standards for her. Pet Food Express is the only place I like to shop for my dog and cat. I went to the Alameda store to get a quick wash for my dog who had swam in the bay earlier in the day. I got to the wash station at five minutes before closing, except I thought the store was open another 30 minutes. I am blown away by Veronica !!! She looks like a young, high school girl but is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, while also being a calm, patient and attentive listener. I have an unbelievably picky cat who stubbornly refuses to eat anything but his new treats, and she thoughtfully chose a few different brands of food for me to try, plus offered advice on how to serve the food to make it more palatable. Really nice store. Couldn't think of a reason to give less than 5 stars... Countless numbers of pet foods here (primarily doggie food)---most are brands that the average person probably hasn't heard of. It's sort of the "Whole Foods" of pet stores. If you're looking to buy something healthier for your dog, come here. They don't even carry most of the "regular," mainstream brands (because most of these are too unhealthy I presume). Service is for the most part helpful & attentive; occasionally it's superb. I also really like the little pet bath area in the back. Sort of a do-it-yourself "dog wash." Expect higher prices than you'd normally anticipate because of the quality of merchandise (food). This medium size shop also carries other pet supplies as well. Will def. return!. read more

This is our favorite pet food store. Employees are knowledgeable, love animals, and friendly. Also love their photo program - if you donate at least $200? (I can't remember the dollar amount) to the rescue you adopt from, they will get professional photos taken of your pet and create a poster of them to put in their stores. This was my first time using a dog wash station. I usually wash the dog in the bath tub, but I wasn't near home and the dog needed a bath. You pay for a token at the register, then insert the token at the wash station. There is a turn knob to select washing, rinsing and blowing. The token includes approximately half an hour. I forget if they said 25 or 30 minutes. I have a med short haired dog, so the time for one token, I could have washed and dried three dogs if I didn't dry them completely. The apron they provide has a stale water smell but it kept me dry from the dog shaking water off. They provide 3 towels to dry the dog. I probably won't come back to use their wash station because I think $15 is a lot for 10 minutes. I would probably use it if I had a big furry dog. Staff was friendly and they had a good stock of staple items for the fur baby. read more

I've been going to the Alameda Pet Food Express location for several years now, and can honestly say I've had only positive experiences. If I could give these people six stars I would. You know you're in a special retail place when the employees seem honestly happy to be there, are helpful and go beyond the call of duty to assist. So, there's that. Add to these basics the rare business model that embraces giving back to its community, and it makes for a truly heartwarming and meaningful retail experience. How do they give back? Okay yeah, there's the tree at Christmas time where you can donate shelter gifts, and there's the posting of adopted animals and some other ongoing programs they subsidize. But did you know they will also take back most any product you find unsatisfactory (even if you've opened/tried it), refund your purchase price, and then donate that item to local shelters? Bad business model? I think not. Strange thing, when you offer folks the chance to be a part of a network of caring, people rise to that level of trust. I honestly can't imagine taking advantage of this generous policy, and have NEVER witnessed anyone else doing so. In fact I think this generosity brings out the best in people. I know personally I've brought things back (knowing their return policy) and have refused to accept a refund. So with all these wonderful attributes, what made me finally write a review? It's simple. Their helpfulness and generosity reached a new high today. A tiny, wounded puppy had been dumped in front of our warehouse. He was hurt, hungry, and obviously in need of a slew of things, i.e. puppy formula, wet puppy food (in case he wasn't taking the formula), and an anti-bacterial spray to treat his horribly scabbed and scraped muzzle. The woman who helped me was not only extremely knowledgeable, but she understood my situation and only suggested those things she thought he would truly need, and then offered the least expensive options. If this weren't enough, when we got to the register she took 25% off the total purchase price to make sure I could afford it. Didn't bat an eye. I imagine there was a time when this feeling of community was commonplace even in commerce, but probably before any of us was born. I think this approach just might be experiencing a renaissance in this age of disconnectedness. All I can say is that I will keep going back to Pet Food Express, and I hope the owner(s) read this and know that their business model based on generosity and community is loved and appreciated. read more

This store is awesome and reliable for all my cat's needs. I had a newly adopted cat who kept getting sick from commercial brand cat foods, and the associates asked many questions about my cat in order to suggest a grain-free food she could switch to. The type they suggested has worked out perfectly and my cat is healthy again. As others said, I have also experienced great service here. They are very accomodating if you explain you were dissatisfied with a product, or have seen a lower price at a competitor. Will defiinitely come here from now on. read more

My dog and I went to check out the dog washing "station" and I was paranoid that he might pee in the store. The clerks said don't worry about it, sometimes that's what happens. UPDATE!: We've already seen fecal evidence that the food we got IS better. Nothing better than eyeing the pet poo for proof! Sorry Petco... even if you DID let my beloved elderly and sadly senile pooch lay a fudge dragon on your floor, these guys are ten times the pro's that you are. I love that they are so conscientious in here. Always trying ot make sure you get the right food - who does that? And at first, Im annoyed, right? Cause Im all "like i dont know what doggie needs?" but finally i says to myself, i says "hey wait, maybe they have something to say". Well just this am, in fact, one of the ladies there begins to ring me up with my big ol bag of expensive science diet. And she says that she can get me a better deal on a better food, and theyll even give me a free small bag of science diet to transition lil' lee so she doesnt get the runs! And this is just what she does. Basically she gave me a free bag of 11.99 dog food, rang up a 23.99 bag, and sent me on my way. Great Store! I was greeted right away upon entry & the man at the register was very informative about my questions about the self serve pet wash. The wash & dry costs $15 & it comes with Collars, Extra Shampoo, Bunch of towels & Treats to encourage the dogs! Since it was my first time using the pet wash they gave me a coupon to make my first wash $5! My dog personally doesn't like taking baths but he was able to cooperate with this one as they had steps & treats to help them out as well as the wall clamps to hook onto the collars. My dog came out happy & clean! As I was leaving out of the pet wash area my attention was caught by some great dog treats for a very cheap price!! They have 99 cent treats & my dog loved all of them!! Very rare for him because he is very picky with his treats. read more

I always take my dogs to get baths at Pet Food Express I usually go to the one in San Leandro or Rockridge. This location the bath tubs were kind of smelly, but the store was super neat this one woman helps me and my pup her name was Ariel. We practically have a petting zoo at our house. We've adopted: two SPCA puppies, an Oakland Animal Shelter bunny, a lovebird (hubby found him on Lincoln Golf Course), and two inherited English budgies. The only pet we bought (which I oppose as a rule) was out of desperation was a partner for our lovebird since he *really* (and I mean REALLY) needed a mate. This is because once he got older, he got aggressive and hormonal and would hump his perch all day. So, we got Saffron (boy lovie) his gal Ginger, and while they still pretty much hump all day, Saffron has gotten far less aggressive. But, I digress.... That all being said, we have a lot of critters that we love. This means trying to buy the best food and general products. I would not recommend this Pet Food Express if you want the same best stuff, but are on a limited budget. The place I go for the bulk quality stuff that Pet Food Express and Petco also carry is the Pet Club in Emeryville. I get by far the lowest prices on Avoderm dog food, bunny food, timothy hay, litter, spray millet, chews, water carafe and dishes for my pooches, and the list goes on and on. Even after all of that I still have to order my lovebird pellets over the internet (Harrison's' Bird Food). Oy, it's always something.... However, I do like this Pet Food Express very much for the outstanding service and the selection of harder to find items. I just stocked up on some great dog toys, brushes, chewies. I also like their great self-service pooch wash. I also appreciate how clean and organized the place was too. The staff is really knowledgeable Other then the prices, the place is great. read more

Great customer service. They were able to answer questions about the specific type of cat food for hair balls. I befriended a beautiful ragdoll neighborhood cat and started feeding her specialized ($$$$) food to help prevent hairballs. I only come here to get her food. Oh, see the picture of my cat Mocha? Went here on my way home from work to get a bottle of kitty urine cleaner. I had looked it up online and knew what the price was. I get there and they are selling it for double the price. No joke, double! It was the exact same bottle, same size/amount. I asked if they priced matched and they said yes, depending on where it was being sold from. They said no to my original search of Amazon. I looked it up on Petco.com and it was a few cents more than Amazon and they said they wouldn't price match Petco... you should have just told me you don't price match! I went to the petco in Southshore. They had the same bottle but it was also priced higher than their online offer and when I asked the employee if they'd honor their online price, they said sure. Let me begin this review by saying that I am typically NOT a fan or supporter of big box chain stores... Upon moving into a new place and having tossed the old cat box (the thing was 4 years old... does anyone pack a stinky old cat box to bring to their new place?)... we needed a new cat box and in a hurry. Pet Food Express is very close to our new place so we went litter box shopping. Not having purchased a box in 4 years I had forgotten how pricey a covered plastic tub can be. And there are so many choices... So at the risk of sounding like a dolt I asked one of the employees if one covered litter box was more popular than another. She spent 10 minutes talking about poo boxes with me. Discussing what various customers have had to say, what her cats do and don't like about the ones she has had, asking me what breed my cats are, etc. I was impressed. I bought the box. My cats are using it. Life is great! AND- always on the look out for an awesome cat litter, I found something "new" at this location... Ever-clean brand, which i have used in the past, has a cedar variety, something i have not seen before. Who doesn't love CEDAR?! The cedar shavings mixed in with the scoopable litter... fantastic. now instead of ASS... the vicinity around the cat-box smells like grandmas linen closet. read more

I remember Pet Food Express when they had only 1 tiny store on the Oakland side of the Park Street Bridge. That store has since closed. I was very happy when I saw that they opened one here in Alameda. The store is very clean and the staff is excellent and provides very good service. They are ready to answer any of your questions. They have a deal where if you buy 3 bags of food, you get a 4th bag for free. The same deal with many other items they carry. They have also started with some food products, Buy 1 get the 2nd 1/2 price. I like that one better because I don't always have the storage for 4 bags of food. read more

So I went to the store and one of their many employees helped me try on Halloween costumes for my dog, and sadly they didn't have the size I needed. She told me that I can put down my name and number and they can help ship it to the store by next week. Since they were able to track down the size I needed for my dog, one of the managers actually drove to the other location and picked it up. So within a few hours after my visit, I had a call saying that the costume I needed was now waiting for me at their store. I brought my just-hours adopted new 3.5 mo puppy to PFE on Blanding. Regina was amazing helping me go through the new dog list, prioritizing what I needed that day vs. what could wait a week or so and get kitted up for welcoming my liddle pittie/border collie mix home. I've lived with many dogs, but never had one myself and this adoption happened somewhat suddenly so I hadn't fully read up or started preparing yet. Regina is super friendly and knowledgeable, she explained things very clearly and pointed out which items were most cost-effective (cents per item in bag, etc.). Jaime was also very friendly and helpful. Even when I forgot to give them my 20% coupon and they had to return and re-ring everything. Jaime even remembered my pup's name when I had to go back the next day to exchange something. (No fault of staff, the box was missing an item.) I learned a lot just from talking to the staff, and they were extremely kind and helpful! Pet Food Express carried everything that was on my list and more. It exceeded my expectations, since they carry more than just food. I was able to find the brand of kibble that my puppy is used to, as well as squeaky toys, wet food for puppies, among other things. There is not one time I have received bad customer service and everyone is knowledgable in regards to dogs. I go here to wash my dog - it's 4 tokens for $45 (each token lasts 25 minutes) and 10 tokens for $100. Ok - I've always really liked this location. Super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff, good selection, and clean store. And when I was in last time, I was blown away by how much one of associates knew about their new alternative supplements (yep, talking about CBD), but tonight this store went so far above and beyond that I literally want to bake them cookies. My neighbors and I rescued a stray pup. I was going to house him for the night and take him to the SPCA tomorrow. When I picked him up from my neighbor, I decided I should bathe him before bringing him home. Alameda Pet Food Express is open until 8:30 (instead of just 8) and it was already nearly 8, so I sped down there. I arrived a little before 8, and they did not make me feel rushed at all. Instead, when I told them about the little pup, they all expressed an abundance of compassion. Not only did they offer the bath for free, they lent me a waterproof collar to secure the pup during the bath and checked on him while I bathed him. It became quickly apparent that the little guy was in really bad shape (infection? injury? poison?). While I continued to clean him and dry him off, the associate with the beautiful neck tattoo couldn't hide his concern and went through the store and picked out supplements and food to help the little pup recover. He even (I'm not crying! You're crying!) picked out a stuffed animal for him!!! I picked out a collar and a lead for the little guy and then went up to pay. Here's the kicker - the associates would only let me pay for the collar and lead. They gave me nutritious puppy food, 3 kinds of dietary supplements, and the bath all for free (well, the pup, not me). And then they asked me to give them updates to how the pup was doing. Such good people. I want to cry just writing this. They were so compassionate and amazing. While I already respected them due to past interactions, tonight they won my devotion. Thank you!!! About the pup: on the way home, one of the neighbors in the rescue found a 24-hour emergency hospital that takes strays (VCA Bay Area Specialists in San Leandro). The bath made me realize how bad off this little guy was, so rather than take him home, I took him to the hospital because I was afraid he might not make it through the night. They triaged him immediately, but because I signed him over as a stray, they can no longer give me updates. I can call Oakland Animal Services this week to see if I can get a status update. Fingers crossed. I donated the food, one of the supplements, and the stuffed animal to the animal hospital, and I will return the unopened supplements they couldn't accept to Pet Food Express.
