We took in a mother cat and her kittens ( via live trap) we believe she was a drop off cuz she was pregnant, tried working with pet haven in June of 2023 to have them , it is now October. Several emails back and forth letting them know he mother is fighting with our female cat that's been in the home for several years, the only kittens they are interested in taking are the 2 male kittens we just paid over $400 to have vetted and fixed. Zero interest in taking the mother cat that's creating a dangerous situation for our female cat. They instead asked if I could put the mother cat into my bathroom. Amazing!! Kerry, Erin, and the entire team at Pet Haven are kind, compassionate, and really go above and beyond to help place even the hardest-to-place cats. After my mom died and my wheelchair-bound dad had to move out of state within 60 days, he needed someone to take his 5 cats (his new place doesn't accept them). Pet Haven worked passionately and creatively to get them all into foster homes. Kerry personally rounded up all 5 scared cats (we don't live in MN and my dad couldn't get them in carriers due to his physical limitations) and did so in a loving and non-traumatic way. I've been fostering for pet Haven now for several years and think it's an amazing organization with caring and capable leadership and they truly care about rescuing animals in need. Like most rescues, it's primarily made up of volunteers so someone may not get back to you immediately. But I think it's worth it to adopt from a rescue like pet haven because the animals are fully vetted and a foster gets to know them well so they can post an accurate profile and help you get a good match for your home. read more

I know Pet Haven is an established organization, and maybe I just had repeated bad luck, but I found the bios/stories for the cats I pursued to be vague or downright wrong. Health issues were minimized - only after I applied for a cat did I learn all of its teeth had been removed and it might need injections for pain and btw, he might experience chronic pain indefinitely. Another cat tagged "good in a home with dogs" had been in the foster's home while the foster dog sat her friend's dog on another floor of her home for a week -- and the cat was afraid of the dog. That was the only dog experience she could point to. So she was just guessing? Similarly, a bio said a cat would like a furry playmate, but I was told after I applied how skittish and shy it was and how it hid for extended periods of time. Again, I heard nothing about experience with other animals. The furry playmate again seemed like a guess. I filled out my apps thoroughly and Pet Haven with detail and took their process seriously. In short, I spent and wasted a lot of time when more accurate information from the outset could've allowed me to better focus on matches that are good for me. I know PH's focus isn't on adopter convenience, but by not providing more clear info you are making it harder to find well-matched home for your animals. read more

This place marginally functions. I was going to offer to foster. You can't reach them by phone. Their voice mail is also full lol. I'm left with a text as I had a question b4 filling out an app. I send them a text with my question. Two days later I get a text that says "You want to surrender your cat? We'll walk you through surrendering." Lol. Um HUH?!?! I said what are you even talking about? Did you read my text at all? They never did respond to my question about fostering not SURRENDERING anything. It's like let's just throw crap at ppl and not read their stuff and not reply. I feel for their animals when they run a sloppy ship like this out of the gate. Ugh. read more

My boyfriend and I just adopted our first pets from Pet Haven this summer. We're definitely happy with how everything turned out. We have two healthy and happy kittens that were easy to acclimate to our home. The first step in the process was an application online, which seemed a little long, but the intent was to have serious applicants show through. We went to visit two homes with kittens to make sure they were as cuddly as we wanted and the shelter families were helpful and accommodating. Thank goodness for all of their advice too, because as a first time pet owner I did not realize all the little things that I could do around the house to keep my kittens out of trouble. What we liked about Pet Haven was that the kittens were raised in a home, where they were familiar with household noises and where they got used to frequent human interaction, making them lovable and friendly as opposed to kind of scared and timid like the ones we met at the Humane Society. Our kittens were already neutered, had basic shots and an I.D. chip when we got them, so our only real cost was a rabies shot and a checkup when they turned three to four months. Overall it was a very smooth process and the foster homes involved made us feel ready to bring our fuzzy little buddies home. read more

First of all, I have to say we ADORE our new pup. She is the perfect addition to our family, and we are so happy with everything that has happened with the adoption. Now, we know that Pet Haven can't take credit for how awesome our dog is, but here is why we would use Pet Haven again. We had been looking at the local Animal Humane Society, but with the animals kept in kennels, it was really hard for us to have an idea of temperament and behavior - which was key to make sure she was a great fit for our family. Pet Haven has volunteers that foster the pets in their home. This gives huge insights into the behaviors, good and bad, that the pet will exhibit in their new home. It also acclimates the animal into the social behaviors of a family, instead of the high stress that comes with being locked up at a kennel. I feel this is a huge advantage to making the adoption a successful one. Secondly, we had reached out to some other rescues about other potential dogs and the response time was horrible. I understand that most people that work with the rescues are volunteers and therefore not paid, however a month to find out if you'll even consider me... that's kind of ridiculous in my opinion. However we had very quick turn around with all our inquires to Pet Haven. This included the application processor, the foster family, the volunteer at the Meet & Great at Petco - everyone was on top of their game. Adoption was a huge deal for us, we only wanted to do it once so were hesitant about some potential issues. Pet Haven has a 10-day time period in which you can return the animal in case it isn't a great fit. Because of some concerns we had, they were willing to extend this time frame so that we could work with the dog. Also be aware that although rescues will offer your money back within a specified time frame, most I looked at only let you apply that amount toward another animal at their rescue - and some even within a 30-day time frame or you loose your money! Pet Haven returns your money to you, which was another huge seller to me that it's more about the connection and fit you have with the animal than the money they receive. Last but not least, the resources they made available after adoption were great. The foster family reached out several times, and when I had concerns they reached out to others to get me great answers. They also put me in touch with a 'dog guru' who was able to give me awesome help with some separation anxiety issues our pup has - on top of loaning us a hard sided crate, because the metal wire one we purchased wasn't working well. Oh, and they are partners with the Animal Humane Society too, so if you want to use the Animal Humane Society for obedience training you'll get a $20 discount. Sorry for the story, but I do a lot of research online before making decisions and rely greatly on reviews from others when making a decision. So I hope that some of this info was helpful. Bottom line, if we wanted to add another addition to our family I wouldn't bother with looking at any other rescue. I would look to Pet Haven until we found the one for us. read more

I have adopted and fostered with Pet Haven. I have to say that as an adopter, I enjoyed being able to know the personality of the cat I was adopting. It was helpful to have a foster be able to speak to what the cat was like and what their best home would be. I checked out three different cats all from their organization, and one from another, to be sure that it was the best fit for the cat I brought in and for myself as a forever home. I never was scolded or shamed for looking into multiple animals and they displayed patience throughout my process. Now my adopted cat has a loving forever home with me and I could not be more grateful. My experience with adopting my cat led to an interest in fostering dogs with Pet Haven. They have the same frustrations as any other rescue organization: - Lack of animal history, including age, friendliness with cats/dogs/kids and breed listed from the shelter they pulled from - No guarantees in terms of temperament or fit with either fosters and/or adopter homes, even after the app, meeting and home visit. - Ambiguity with whether a foster animal can adjust to life at their adopter's home, regardless of how good they look on paper. - When to draw the line with what is covered or not covered with post adoption vet bills. Pet Haven does the absolute best they can to reduce ambiguity and gain trust for adopters. They allow their fosters to make the call regarding whether a home is a good one or not and does not pressure a foster to agree to an adoption even if their gut says it is not a good fit. Any frustrations adopters have had with any of the half-dozen dogs I have fostered have all been because they do not understand the nature of rescue and the lack of history or irrefutable facts there are when it comes to taking in a rescue animal.
