I've been a regular at PetZone for years because the staff is always helpful and are very chill, plus the store offers great scapes. Unfortunately, my experience has soured due to the owner's business practices. PetZone is one of the priciest fish stores in San Diego, and I've noticed continuous price hikes--up to 30% on some items. When I've asked for small clippings or deals, I've been charged 10-15 bucks extra--sometimes for things that were likely going to be tossed anyway. I've also been disappointed by the store's approach to trade-ins or donations. If you bring in anything for credit or to share with the community, don't expect any return value. The owner has marked up prices by as much as a third more than other local stores like Pet Kingdom and Aquatic Warehouse. On top of that, there's a new "cherry pick" pricing where you pay three times as much for the fish you want, which feels unfair. I've also seen issues with the store's online and social media pricing. Often, they post prices that are lower than what's offered in-store, only to be told that "it's not in the system" or "the price is incorrect" when you try to buy. This feels like a bait-and-switch tactic, especially since these pricing mistakes are rarely honored (especially by the owner, this happened to me +3x) I know this isn't the fault of the employees--they're doing their best to follow the owner's instructions, even if the prices don't make sense to them (to note they're experienced in the hobby themselves). Long-time regulars like myself are noticing this shift, and it's become disappointing to see how the owner treats the community, especially when people who used to be close to him say they've been cut off from discounts or deals. Amazing business. The couple that owned the store were very nice and educational. All the tanks were cleaned to the brim and didn't spot any dead fish. We ended up walking away with 8 beautiful fish. My girlfriend and I are very excited for our new fish hobby and this was a great first stop. I also recommend their Kearny Mesa location. The staff were really friendly and explained a lot about aquascaping tips and getting a planted tank set up. From explaining how to set up substrate/dirt/sand to how to visually craft an aquascape, every question I threw at them was explained super helpfully. They also gave me helpful resources, such as books and YT channels I can look into for more aquascaping tips as well. The selection of freshwater fish is also really good too. Placed an online order on August 25th, it just arrived today, September 9th (overnight delivery). I called a few days ago to check in, since I hadn't had any email updates on the delay. The guy I talked to was super nice and helpful on the phone, explained what was going on. I'm okay with the delay, understand things are slow with COVID. Also, I'm in Texas, and the weather is in the 80s today, so the delay was good to avoid temps in the 100s. Anyway, ordered 5 glass catfish, all arrived alive and seem to be healthy. Three stars because I ordered 8 halfbeaks, and 4 were dead on arrival. The other 4 are looking pretty bad, probably because of the ammonia in the bag from the dead ones. Instead of acclimating them, I just threw the live ones directly into the tank (heavily planted 55g). I don't think they would have made it much longer in the bag, and hoping they may be able to pull through. Just disappointed because I've had a hard time finding the halfbeaks here in Texas, and I was really hoping to have a nice little group of them for my tank. Update: All 8 halfbeaks have died, think the ammonia in the bag was too much for them. ): The glass cats are doing great, though! read more

I question the quality of their product after my first betta fish got fin rot and died. That was a $30 fish the owner told me it had a little rot when I bought it but it was growing back fine and it should be fine. Well it didn't, it died in under a month. I do feel I'm partially to blame for that because I didn't know I was supposed to change the water so often. I Also got a snail and a frog. The snail died within two weeks and the frog completely disappeared so I don't know if the betta ate the frog or what happened. I decided to buy a whole new tank with a filtration system so that I wouldn't have to keep changing the water all the time Now I go back I get a new $30 beta a new frog($5) a plant ($7), and a new snail($4). The snail died within 2 days. The plant was gone/dead within the week but my betta is thriving. I have a pH monitor so I know it wasn't the pH. It baffles me that the snail and the plant died so quickly. The frog I can't find again he disappeared and then reappeared a few days later but is missing again so maybe he lives in the gravel? Anyway I don't think a snail should die in 2 days and the plant should have lasted a hell of a lot longer than a week. I feel like I did everything correct on my end so it must be that they're selling some bad products. read more

Went to San Diego to get away from work for the weekend. Being a fish hobbyists, I went on their website a few times in the past. Decided to actually check the store in person and was amazed by the stock they had. I was a few days late but it was still worth it. It was a mom and pops store ran for years. Spent a good amount and if you check on Yelp you receive a free comet. The monster fish selection is greater than their other location. Worth the drive from Vegas in my opinion. Customer service was excellent. The parking can be busy though. read more

Horrible place The first time I went I bought two Oranda goldfish one was orange and white and one was black. The next day they had parasites. Then I got new fish for free both black orandas.The fish I just got one had eggs and I asked the man about eggs and all he said was "Oh I don't know google it". The next day the fish had a fungus. And on Thursday morning when we left they were swimming fine but when we went to clean their tank When we got home they were dead. I am very disappointed in this place. My boyfriend and I had been on the hunt for blood parrot and/or king kong parrot cichlids for our aquarium for weeks and couldn't find them at any of our local fish stores. We visited Pet Zone on our last trip to SD and decided to give them a call to check their selection of fish. They said they had a lot of the fish we wanted so we made the trip out there this past weekend. This Pet Zone is located on University Avenue and parking can be difficult to find at times. Be sure to check all street parking signs and abide by them! (They have another location in Kearny Mesa that we visited also, but their fish were smaller than what we wanted). This fish store is owned by the sweetest couple. We had an absolute blast talking with them. We even got to meet their cute kitty, Mimi! I carried her with me basically the entire time we were there. The couple told us that Mimi never wants to leave the store. If you try to walk outside with her, she'll claw you and refuse to leave! They can't even take her home! Silly kitty! My boyfriend and I decided to get six medium-sized king kong parrots and one small thai silk flowerhorn fry. The sweet lady worked with us to pick out whichever ones we wanted, despite how difficult it ended up being. Those little fish move so fast! She made sure that we liked the coloring, shape, and size of each fish and put back any fish that we didn't like. She asked how long our drive home was and when we told her where we were from, she added more water and oxygen to the bags so it would be more comfortable for the fish. She also gave us a large box to carry everything in, which was nice. Prices here are great and definitely worth our trip to find the fish we've been looking for. Our visit here was easily the best experience we've ever had at a fish store. The couple treated us like we were family and were so kind to us. We wish that their store wasn't all the way in SD or we would visit so much more often! It was hard to say bye to little Mimi. But next time we're in SD, we will definitely be back! But the nice lady in the store basically sold the cheapest fish tank and easiest fish to have as pet for our 5 year old daughter. We were insisting on getting bigger tank and fancier fish. We live in NorCal and my son has been following Petzone for over a year on Instagram. The fish they have is amazing and unique. So much so that we planned a trip to visit! Both stores had gorgeous flowerhorns and a plethora of other common and rare finds. The staff is friendly and helpful at both sites. The Convoy store is newer and has a parking lot. Explanation was the item was not in stock (not according to their website) and they sent a different one instead. We have gone here a couple of times because we were looking for a specific breed of fish and we couldn't find a pet store that had them. This place has a wide selection of fresh and saltwater fish; much better than going to a standard Petco or Petsmart. Plus the owners are wonderfully nice people. The prices are a little steep but well worth it especially if you are a looking for a particular breed. Also as a side note, there is a very cute, feisty black kitten who sometimes greets customers when she is in the mood. Definitely recommend! :) read more

I want to thank Powell Hean for personally calling me regarding my order. I had requested three of the largest Platinum Parrot fish that they had in stock. Powell called to let me know that what they had available were just 1 inch babies. My order also consisted of an Silver Arowana. Powell said he was packing my order to shipped out that same day and I received it the following day. The Parrots are small but will grow out fast. The Arowana is beautiful. I have also ordered Amazon puffers from PetZone and I plan on placing another order for Albino Senegal Bichirs and a Fire Eel. This place is a joke. I ordered fish for local pick up. My card was charged no problem. Called and messaged to see when I could pick up. Was told one of the fish I ordered was out of stock but they were getting more in a few days and they would hold my other fish until then. After a few days I did not hear anything so I called and spoke with Orlando who told me all the fish I ordered, and paid for, were out of stock and it's not their policy to hold fish, and that he doesn't know who told me that, and best he can do is refund me, then he straight up hung up on me. He was unbelievably rude, and refused to take any responsibility. I was trying to support locally. At least Pet Kingdom is super rad and local too! read more

Check your fish before leaving the store. I came to the store and bought lambchop rasboras but one of their employees gave me a mixed bag of Harlequins and lambchop. This is my first time keeping these fish, and I had no idea I was given the wrong fish and it was end of the day so just put them in quarantine tank and called it the day. But the next morning I saw them looking so much different from each others so I googled and it turned out I got the mixed group of rasboras. I have a small tank and wanted the lambchop for their size. If I live locally I would come back and exchange, but my home is 70 miles from the store. I was in the area for a business and decided to stop by because I saw positive reviews. I called, msg Instagram, and finally txt them and got respond. That's not a problem, since biz can get bz at times. Paul picked up my call, and listened to my story but said there was nothing FishZone can do about. Told me to come back to exch ange the fish. It is impractical for me to driving back. I asked if they wound give me a prepaid label so I can pack the fish and send them back to the store, and them send me the correct fish. But it was NO. Fishzone's employee there made a mistake, and but they don't own up to it. I'm keeping the lambchop, but giving away 4 Harlequins rasboras that I got from FISHZONE for FREE. If anyone live around zip code 92694, and want these fish let me know. UPDATE: The owner contacted me after this review asking me to shoot over my info. But don't give me a contact to send info. And in fact I already emailed about the situation before contacting them via other means. If asking me to shoot info over to the same email address, which the owner said influxes with messages along with my previous email, I will not. This is a great fish store which I have been to twice now so far. The first time was to get supplies to setup my 5 gallon Betta tank and earlier today I stopped by to pick up another live plant to spruce up lil Z1's tank. The owner, an older Asian woman is so kind, informative, and friendly. They have a vast amount of all kinds of things fish related (fish included of course) and we talked about many different fish related things while I was in there. I used to have 3 Oscars so I don't consider myself a novice when it comes to them, but they have some beautiful gargantuan sized Oscars in two of their tanks. The owner told me the ones at her house are even bigger! Great store for your aquarium needs. Only thing is street parking isn't always readily available, but I solved that issue by parking in the lot at Donut Star a couple of blocks down. Since I parked in their private lot, I forced myself to purchase a delicious maple bar from inside the donut shop. What's fair is fair right? Two birds killed with one stone. But yeah, if you need aquarium supplies and/or fish, this is a great place to go! read more
