I had a bit of an emergency with my kitten a Roo.. No one in town or around the area where I live would take my cat, not even the veterinarian clinic that I have used for 25 years! They would NOT fit me in and it was quite urgent. Somebody in the Gresham community Facebook suggested that I call City Pets. I called them and pled with them my kittens case. They had me take him right in. They said come Now! I never expected that. They assured me they could get me in within the hour. When I got there, they took me straight to a room and attended to me and my kitten. The gal at the front desk, the employees and the veterinarian were very accommodating. My kitten had not gone to the bathroom in almost 4 days. It was really quite an emergency. I had lost a cat previously due to the same issue and was terrified that what might happen. The technician and the veterinarian promptly looked at him and cared for him. Together, we came up with a plan for future troubleshooting in this area. The veterinarian DVM Amanda Denninger knew I was working with a very low budget as I am on Social Security. She worked with me in every way possible. She was not judgmental. She was just very accommodating and kind. We came up with a solution together. After some medication and a diet changes, I went home with my boy feeling grateful and thankful for her knowledge as I truly was not expecting to be bringing my boy back home. I immediately called and transferred my kittens medical records from my long-time, (25) years vet clinic to City Pets on Division St in Portland. I will never refer or return to the Gresham clinic that I used all of those years. City Pets helped me when i didn't think my kitten had a chance. They were compassionate and they empathized with me every step of this way. I never expected so much from a Clinic that I've never been to before. I'm amazed at how well they treated me and Roo, my kitty. I am over the top impressed with City Pets professionalism and the true concern that they have given me so far. I will do a follow up on this in a couple weeks to let people know how things turned out What I thought was gonna be a very dark day, turned into a beautiful day full of hope for my kitten and his future. Five years after my last review, Dr. Hurn, who saw my dog as both a puppy and an adult, has now retired. My dog is now a geriatric senior. The new crew may not do everything exactly the same as when they first opened but places evolve and nothing stays the same forever. That said, I am never bringing my dog anywhere else because they have consistently come through for us. Today, my sick dog projectile pooped on one of the vets while she was standing behind him trying to listen to his heartbeat with a stethoscope. Their response? They laughed, cleaned it up, made him feel comfortable, and continued the appointment without missing a beat. I was honestly bewildered by how much my dog could poop and I have to admit I found it funny too. More importantly, they made sure he was taken care of like they always do. They gave him an antibiotic to make sure he is treated well. As I was leaving, they even gave me poop bags and pads in case he had any accidents on the way home. As far as the negative reviews: I know vet bills can be frustrating but that is something that happens at any clinic. Unexpected things come up and costs do increase. That is just the reality of veterinary care (and just healthcare in general). In the end, what matters most is not that everything stays exactly the same over time. It is that the care, compassion and trust remain consistent (except for that one time, about ten years ago, they had some jerk ass male vet who was condescending - he didn't last there long). Even as staff changes, this team continues to show up with compassion. That level of empathy and dedication is not guaranteed and that is why we will keep coming back. read more

This has got to be the worst vet I've ever been to. And it's not just my experience -- I have friends who have gone here and had similarly terrible experiences. They do not handle dogs with care. We took our puppy in and to check something on his belly they forcefully flipped him on his back which he did not like. Other vets use tricks with treats to lure the dog onto their back. They are not transparent about test results and medicine. Our dog got tested for goopy eyes. They took him to another room, did some unknown tests, and then instead of the vet coming back to share the results, someone else came back and couldn't tell us what the medicine was or what the testing showed -- just the cost of the medicine. Lastly, they refuse to provide any paperwork to file with insurance. They just don't respond. I would never recommend this vet. I think they create a fearful environment for dogs and generally lack professionalism. read more

I've been taking my pet here for about 4 years. Their service has gotten a lot better since the end of Covid lockdown. The last couple times we went in for vaccinations, our vet has been really good with our anxious animal. The only downside is they require a wellness visit each time they do vaccinations, even if they are only 3 months apart. I'm guessing it's to prevent vaccinating a sick animal that needs some other treatment. read more

City Pets is awful, will never go back. I brought in my dog for a rabies vaccine I thought he needed. I called twice to confirm and ask about getting the vaccine but clearly no one even bothered to look at my records during those calls.When I arrived only 7 minutes late I was repeatedly loudly scolded by the lady in the front room and told I may not get to keep my appointment. I was then loudly scolded again for taking my dog off his leash when she asked me to put him on a scale, so much so that the other lady Then the vet came in and told me he didn't even need a rabies vaccine but that there was a bunch of "other vaccines" I could get him. lol no thanks. Have been scammed by these people so many times. The vet doesn't care about the animals at all and just runs out of the room as soon as she realizes she isn't gonna get paid. We have taken our cats here for years and have had really bad experiences and have felt that we were being overcharged for a lot of things but stuck with them for convenience. We adopted a new puppy and were told that our dog would need three distemper vaccines to complete the full cycle. We went in today for the second vaccine and waited 45 minutes for the vet to come in. The vet came in and called my 11 week old puppy crazy. We were then told that the vaccine is actually supposed to be given every 3-4 weeks until the dog is 16 weeks of age, meaning that she would require a 4th distemper shot. When I questioned this and why we weren't told this at the first visit, the vet ran out of the room immediately. I had to ask for her to come back in and answer some of our questions. She stood by the door holding the handle the entire time I was trying to answer questions and dismissed everything I said, informing me that she isn't willing to answer questions because we weren't paying for an exam visit. I am really sad to see my dogs health be dismissed like this and it really felt that once she knew she wasn't getting paid, she didn't care anymore about our dogs wellbeing. She kept reiterating that this wasn't a visit and she would answer my questions next time when I paid for the exam. I waited 45 minutes for her to come in, the least she could have done would have been sitting down in her chair and answering my short questions. I also have recently learned that the fecal tests at this vet are twice the cost of other vets in the area, $98. I highly recommend going elsewhere for quality pet care. read more

They bent over backwards trying to make him comfy at his first appointment and then prescribed us some meds to make the next one less stressful. I don't get it. I don't understand where some of these low star reviews are coming from. We've been seeing City Pets Vet for a few years now and have always received pretty awesome service for our dog. The vet techs are amazing, some of the sweetest folks ever and truly care about taking care of your pets. Janelle (I think) is a rock star and especially helpful. The vet has always been super friendly and transparent when it comes to my doggos care. During these pandemic times we are asked to drop off our pets and communicate with the vet via phone call, which is fine and I totally get it. The vet here always takes the time to explain everything to me and doesn't make me feel uncomfortable if I have follow up questions or concerns. She's got a great sense of humor and seems to enjoy bribing my dog with treats and cheese. Yes, it's expensive. But we visit once every other year or so and anticipate that getting our doggo cared for will cost a bit. I'm fortunate to be comfortable paying what they charge, especially because of how they treat myself and my doggo. So yeah, this place isn't a pet spa. My dog won't love every minute in here. But I do know she is in great care and gets ridiculously large amounts of treats and attention every time she visits. read more

Only good things to say about this vet! I started as a new client with them when I moved to Portland and they were conveniently located in the SE. They're a small and personal office, quick to respond to emails and calls (usually less than a couple hours for an email, even on weekends and though their auto-response says it can take 1-2 business days), friendly staff (the front desk always offered treats and the option to throw away poop bags), and professional vets. I felt like all my dog's needs were taken care of at reasonable rates. In an emergency (anaphylactic shock), I called panicking and they calmly directed me to Dove Lewis. After the emergency hospital stay, my dog wanted nothing to do with vets and City Pets Vet approached her fear in an understanding way. read more

When I moved into the neighborhood a year ago and looked up the reviews for this vet, things looked solid. Took my dogs in for their annual checks. One of my pups had an itchy ear which they cleaned out and tested which came up as yeast. Both pups got their immunizations and we were on our way. Fast forward to this year - I took them in for the same thing, annual exams, shots and one itchy ear. The doc cleaned pups ear and tested it again, which again was yeast. She then told me she would like to rx expensive oral medication or weekly allergy shots. My dog is almost 10 and there has never been any mention of needing something so drastic - especially when it's just yeast in his ear from environmental allergies (per the doc herself). I told her I would need to think about this. For my other dog, she had a hot spot which the doc wanted to rx another spendy topical med for even though I told her i had the spray at home already I just hadn't been using it much. After all this, she said she would like to hold off on vaccines and recheck in 4 weeks which seemed fair to me. Four weeks later I take them back in. Ear is still clean and hot spot is gone. She then starts to do a full exam again on them. I stopped her and asked if she indeed had to repeat the exam - which she said yes, another complete exam is necessary. So 4 weeks prior I spent $76 er dog per exam and now she wants to charge an additional exam for $60 per dog. So much for that "recheck" she asked for. I declined and started asking her questions regarding the initial visit which really set her off. She cut me off with every question I asked. I reminded her that I had already spent over $300 just four weeks ago and my dogs had still not even gotten the immunizations. She responds with "I would never give shots to a sick dog" even though neither dog was sick and she gave my dog his shots last year after cleaning his ear out... same vet, same ear issue, and no problem to give him his shots. The vet tech walked in with the shots and the vet said "no, we're done" and got up and walked out. Super mature and professional. So yeah, spent over $300 for absolutely nothing. Do not expect to be able to ask valid questions regarding healthcare unless you want to get cut off and belittled. read more

It makes me sad to give a 1* rating to a place my husband and I once were very happy with. We were customers for half a year with our previous dog, who unfortunately passed away. When we got a new puppy, we didn't hesitate to go back. However, they really screwed things up. It already started on our very first visit. Our breeder (who works at a vet herself) provided us with some paperwork concerning the vet care and vaccinations our pup had already had. We presented all this info at the clinic. The next visit (a few weeks later - there are lots of vaccinations to get with a puppy), the staff as well as vet were all confused on which shots our pup needed and already had. I presented the paperwork again, and it was obvious they did not make proper record of this the first time. Every visit after that, staff and vet were confused on the shots our pup needed. We are talking BASIC administration, and we couldn't have provided more clear information. WE were the ones that had to do the administration and keep track for them. An example: I called the clinic once to double check if it was correct that our puppy only had her Rabies shot left. This was confirmed. Weeks later, we get a notification per mail that our puppy is overdue on her DA2PP vaccination. We obviously freaked out, immediately called, but the person on the phone was just as confused as we were. Basically we never knew for sure if our pup was getting the required vaccinations, because the staff failed to keep track of something that should be super easy. It made us very scared about our pups health, which was so upsetting. On top of this, my husband had a really bad experience with this vet tech named Scott. Now most vet techs have been nice, giving treats, distracting our pup when she gets a shot etc. Not this guy. He gave my husband and pup a really shitty experience. Why do they hire someone that doesn't even like animals?! We were planning on switching vets when it's time for our dog's yearly check-up, but I called another clinic today as one more bad experience happened. My pup seems to have a bad issue with her eye, so I called for an apt for the next day. NO spots available - I was told to check another clinic. I was so upset. Every other clinic keeps some spots open for urgent care. The one time we really need this place, they are not there for us. Please think twice before taking your pet here. Staff cannot be trusted to keep proper records. We can' wait to be done with this place. read more

We just had our first couple of visits at City Pets Vet and they were great. They staff are very kind and knowledgeable. My dog hates going to the vet and they were very patient and helpful with getting him the treatment that he needed while keeping him as comfortable as possible. He had a checkup and several vaccinations and had blood drawn and it was all done with him on the floor which is much more comfortable for him, though it meant that the vet, techs and I were also on the floor :) Scheduling was a breeze and the receptionists were kind and helpful. read more

Like a lot of other reviewing City Pets, I was new to Portland and needed to establish a vet for my cat who was diagnosed and was being treated for large cell gastric lymphoma by my trusted vet in my hometown. Right away I didn't trust them, I had to take her in to become an established patient just to get a refill on a medication that was prescribed by my original vet two weeks before. And the costs added up from there. I would not say they had fair pricing to the point I ended up going online for some of her medication. I took her to two visits the first, the doctor there wanted to cut her medication down when asked why she just said because "it was working". I was not confident is this answer and emailed my old vet, who absolutely suggested against doing that since I would inhibit her recovery. The second and last time we brought her in she has lost a lot a weight and wasn't eating we knew it was becoming time, that she wasn't going to beat the cancer. But I really just wanted a few more days to say goodbye, a different doctor prescribed her an appetite stimulant with severe side effects. He warned us about them but it was too much for her system to handle, she had a stroke and passed that morning. We had spent $187 on that vet visit. I was going to rate them a two because there wasn't much that could have been done for my cat, but they just didn't have the knowledge needed to treat her and they wasted my time and money thinking that they did. read more

Was quoted over $500 to have my cat spayed. Every tiny detail of the procedure was priced to the penny, as well as all the added "necessary" items such as a fecal testing kit, flea treatment (for a cat who has never been outdoors), amongst other "recommendations". The vet tech continued to call my cat by the wrong name despite my correction and referred to her as he/she interchangeably. Parking was not as convenient as I would personally prefer, esp if you're going in anytime CIBO could be popping. On the other hand, scheduling was fairly timely. I normally don't write yelp reviews, but it's important to know where to take your sweet companion because some places will overcharge and/or don't care too much about your beloved pet. Anyway, the place was overall great. We are recent college grads, & money is tight so we only wanted the necessary services ( make sure to stress that ). Kristen, the vet tech, was incredibly helpful and we liked her so much. Just a very honest, caring person, and our cat was so comfortable with her. I recommend getting her advice before the vet comes in, and do research beforehand! Know what you're going there for so you don't pay for unnecessary services. Like a bad mechanic...waste of time and money, and didn't even get what I went in for. But they were nice.

The vets themselves are knowledgeable and good with animals. Some of the techs are really great (Jen) others just fair. That is where the pros end. The rooms could be cleaned more frequently and I always feel like my pet is going to leave with fleas or mites from the fur and dirt lingering around. They run 30 minutes behind on appointments as a general norm, unapologetically. On several occasions we have had mix ups where the front desk schedules the wrong appointment type or messes up orders, or forgets orders were already paid. While this is the best care we have found in this neighborhood, it could stand for improvement. read more

Our experience with the doctor was weak, but more especially the sociopathic vibe of the assistant, scared us far far away from this vet. There was an almost immediate 'can't do' vibe from the vet, and the assistant came right out of the gate acting as if our extremely old and super chill cat was going to bite or claw him... his behavior with the cat and his commentary to try and cover for being so aggressive (as the cat just lay there mutely doing nothing at all) went far beyond someone being bad at their job. We became much less trusting as a result of his behavior, (our cat has been to countless vet appts over the years and never elicited this reaction from anyone, being a truly low key cat) and the vet immediately pegged us as problem clients when we seemed overly protective after this, and tried to ask more questions. During follow ups with this clinic, they were reluctant to help and slow to return blood work results. We had to pester them. They really need to screen their techs better more than anything because that guy is absolutely chilling to watch him needlessly manhandling and restraining our cat against the table like it was some sort of power trip for him... and that was while he was right in front of us! We were not happy to have him take our elderly cat out of the room, which made me look like a problem person when it was all due to the behavior of that psycho-killer-vibe tech guy. The good: They were able to get me in same day and their "new patient visit" is the same as a regular exam, which you don't see many places. Everyone was super friendly and really sweet with my little Ricky, they tried to give me a quote up front, which I thought was very considerate, there were options for making the visit as economical as possible. The overall visit, even with all the meds he went home with was waaay lower than I would usually spend at VCA, which I would like to avoid going to again if possible. The not so good: The main drawback, which is actually a pretty big one for me is that the place is highly scented with a very overpowering deodorizer. For someone with chemical odor sensitivity, it was difficult being in the lobby. I would highly recommend that they figure out a way to keep the place airy and nice smelling without the use of a heavy chemical deodorizer. Even something more natural would do the trick, but what they are using now is super intense. read more

I've been going to City Pets Vet for 3 1/2 years. They saw me though the illness and passing of my elderly bff with compassion and competence, and are continuing to care for my beloved and completely nutterbutter current pooch. Vet care seems like a tough gig to me - balancing costs and emerging science and complicated treatments and the fact we just don't know what is actually going on in our pets' heads... I trust the folks here with all that - and I like the way the operate. They're probably not the cheapest, but that's not what I want. I want a team that knows what they're doing, takes the time to be thorough, and clearly cares deeply for their patients (and the owners!). Plus, the location is convenient, there is easy parking, and they always have available appointments that fit my schedule. As a small business owner and a mega dog lover I feel like City Pets Vet is doing it right. Big thumbs up. read more

I debated a lot on this review. My dog has been going to city pets for about 2.5 years, and truly, I gave them the very best shot I could. I will start with the positives, the staff is for the most part super friendly, not one of the vets or doctors were mean. I think the issues with the front desk were not a fault of their own, but rather the management lacking courteous behavior and being insightful about their clients. I felt this really was a clinic where the staff was made to feel as if they needed to just make as much money off of their clients as they can. I learned that I could've paid 50% in a comparable vet for teeth cleaning. They shut down the clinic several times, but I still got confirmation texts/messages so I showed up and never even got a message letting me know the clinic was shut down. Tip for this cleaning, ask about your charges and explanation of what is actually needed. Be kind to the workers there, the real issue is probably the management. Anyway, not going back anytime. read more

Dr. Hurn and her staff are wonderful. In addition to professionalism, integrity, and great bedside manner, they have been able to squeeze my dogs in for emergencies without the slightest hesitation. When I had to make the tough decision to let my 14 year old best friend go, Dr. Hurn and Amy were so wonderful. They stayed after hours to make sure everything went peacefully and genuinely comforted me when I needed it. I never feel I'm being hood-winked by Dr. Hurn or her staff. They listen, ask questions, lay out all the options, and will give advice, but not pressure you into anything you don't need. I cannot recommend them highly enough, they are great people as well as caregivers. read more

We have been going there 5+ yrs with our cats. They had done a good to sometimes excellent job but recently, the quality of their service has declined noticeably. I think it's more of a management problem than a technical competence problem. Some of the new technicians also do not appear to be up to par in their abilities but my main complain has to do with a lack of sense of urgency for our cat and poor follow up in discussing with me the results of the expensive tests they conducted and the appropriate follow up actions. One part of the office does not talk to the other. Multiple vets treated my cat for a behavioral problem and appeared not to talk to each other. I had to get nasty with them to talk to me about the test results and follow-up actions. They prescribed follow on medication but failed to put the prescription in until I went to pick it up, only to find that it had not been entered by the vet. I have now decided to go to another vet. read more

City Pets Vet is the best. Period. Everyone that works there is incredibly sweet and knowledgeable. My cat, Jackson, has quite a few medical issues and one of the scariest he developed pretty recently. I was so appreciative of the entire staff as they helped my family and I devise a treatment plan (one that wasn't a fortune and worked for us) for him. Jackson has never been better! I also JUST got a new puppy and I took him in for his very first check-up yesterday. The staff were incredible at helping him feel comfortable and confident in an environment he has never experienced. I'm pretty sure he's going to be extremely excited next time we even walk in front of the office. I adore this place, the staff, the location, the price, everything is just right. I never feel like I'm getting sold things I don't need and I completely trust them to provide me with all the options so that I can make the best decision for my family. I think they excel at both "check-ups" and regular vet visits AND larger medical issues. I would recommend this place before anywhere else. this pet service is a complete scam. they have zero care about the health of your pet, and operate solely as a 'check-up' vet - they have no right to advertise as any other practice. This veterinarian deals purely with 'frou frou' cases, as was reiterated when i tried bringing in my kitty, who is a registered patient at the vet, with a bout of heavy breathing - associated with his asthma. City Pets Vet DENIED bringing in my cat, stating they couldn't help me with his condition, and barraged me with recommendations to animal hospitals in the area, as they deemed my cats case to be "too serious". This was not my understanding, as my cat did show mild signs like this in the past, but i had planned on leaving him for a couple days, and didn't want to leave him in a sensitive state. My cat also suffers from serious anxiety, and the idea of taking him to a cat hospital was very much a last case scenario. I pleaded with the receptionist, to let me speak to their supervisor or the vet, they said they would call me back as soon as possible. A couple hours passed, and i heard nothing from my neighbourhood vet, down the block. So decided to call again. I was greeted by very rude, and somewhat aggressive slander from the receptionist, again suggesting I take my pet to the hospital. At this point, I had been pressured - and proceeded to take my cat to an animal hospital; where he was drugged, to the eyeballs, with opioids, which negatively affected my cat, proceeding to send him into a heightened, panicked, and asthmatic state - developing into a full on attack. My cat was almost unresponsive and unrecognizable to me in the proceeding 6 hours after taking him home, I was eventually able to calm him down myself, once the drugs had worn off. Had this vet serviced my cat in a proper manner, and responded ethically; this situation would have never unveiled itself, nor even occurred. My pet has the right to be seen by a specialist when required, not at the expense of your veterinary practices preference. This entire event was abysmal, avoidable, and outright disgraceful. Stay away from this scam of a 'pet' vet, animal money grabbers - would be a more appropriate sentiment. read more
