We've been to this location a few times, but it's only if we are in the area. Sometimes the prices on cat food are good, but toys and cat trees are all overpriced. It really is like a warehouse and there's lots of dust and grit on the floor. I can't look into the "animals" section anymore -- it just seems like they are so unhappy and I want to rescue them all away from there. The rooms are windowless and the air is just trapped. When I visited during COVID-19, they didn't have animals, which I think is a good thing. When we last came in, our cashier struggled to give us correct change and I had to ask her for more money back because she had miscounted. Not a big deal, but just not great. While this is not the worst pet store I've ever been in, I have absolutely no desire to return. Everything about it seems run down and outdated. Sometimes aesthetics don't matter to me as long as I'm getting a decent product or a good deal, but it's kind of depressing for a place that serves as a home to live animals. That said, the animals seem to be okay - I've seen some pet store horror shows (animals without access to water, animals stuck between the cage and the walls) and Pet World doesn't seem to be in that league. Everything looks pretty dingy, though, and the bathroom was downright disgusting. There were ants crawling around on the floor and a crushed cockroach on the ground. Gross. I occasionally stop there for toys, etc. for my two rescue cats. A few months ago, I noticed they had this adorable black kitten in a cage near the front of the store. I asked to hold the kitten and he was very sweet and gentle. They want a couple of hundred dollars for this kitten because they said they had paid to have him neutered. I went back yesterday and the poor thing is still there. He is alone in a small cage that has his litter box, food and water in it. This little guy looks so sad and depressed. I have shopped here before since I feel bad buying from Petsmart. However, over the past nine-ish months at least, I've been trying to buy Silver Dollars from them. I put a few on hold way back last summer and never received a call saying they were in (which I was promised no more than a week). I called about two weeks later and the guy on the phone apologized about it and put it another hold, which was understandable. Things happen. Except I never got THAT call either. Went through this loop about 1-2 more times before just giving up. This has potential to be a good store but there seems to be a lack of care from employees. Really sucks. read more

Depressing, depressing, depressing. Also, sad. Made the circuitous route to this place last night around 7 pm. Dark already, and the insane beltline lunatics apparently also travel the frontage road at 80 mph, and scream at anyone (me) not doing likewise. Fun! But I digress. Due to the name of the place, warehouse outlet, I thought it might be the best place to find the largest selection and lowest prices. I needed a new litter pan for my new place. Wrong, on both counts. The selection in this cavernous space was no greater than in any random big box store, and the prices were higher, if anything. I walked around a bit to see what the food offerings were like, and it consisted mainly of miles of Iams, Nutro, and Science diet, three of the worst things you could ever feed an animal. Ugh. I found an acceptable litter box, and made my way towards the checkout. I stopped and played with the kittens for a long time. At $300 each, who will buy them? The same random tiger striped and tuxedo kittens are on Craigslist every day for $0. The humane society charges $30, I think. Ugh. It was hard not to worry what the future holds for them. The real heartbreaker was the parrot. I heard a soft "hello" and went to that cage next. I've never seen an avian creature so desperate to be loved. He or she held onto the bars with his or her beak, and stretched both legs out towards me as far as they could go. I held his/her "hands" and petted him/her for awhile, and it was so, so hard to walk out the door and say goodbye. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. "What's his name?" I asked. "We don't name them." read more

Reptile department: Depressing is all I can say. All reptiles are on loose substrate wich can cause impaction - and majority of the bedding used can get moldy quick, especially in humid conditions. They feed crickets to herbivores (like iguanas - they eat veggies only not bugs), when veg is provided for herbivores it's always frozen mixed (corn,carrots, green beans), which has no nutritional value for the animals. Prices for livestock are way too high. Save yourself money and heartache, go to Reptile Rapture, they will do right by you. Fish Department: dismal. Fish that shouldn't be together are together, giving people new to the hobby a false impression of what is safe to put together. Aptasia is rampant in their live rock, tanks need scrubbing desperately, tanks all tied to one central filtration unit. Bird department: Live stock extremely overpriced, and larger birds are longing for interaction. When they do take parrots out, most times they are on a stand behind the front counter, more or less left to their own devices. Very little in the amount of toys are provided, birds look bored and lonely (that's why we rescued a large bird from there). More toys need to be provided, these birds NEED enrichment, otherwise they start screaming and plucking feathers. Small animal department: Let's just not even go there.... Although they have a wide selection of products, many times it can be found elsewhere for much less (Lafebers AviCakes for example...8.99 for parrot and 12.99 for cockatoo sizes. I can get both at Animart for 6.99 each). They need to shop their competitors to see what they should be charging. Most supplies I buy from either other local competitors or online. They won't survive much longer if they don't take a good hard look at their pricing policies! read more

ANIMALS ARE NOT TAKEN CARE OF WELL!!! I went in to get food for my pet and left without buying anything due to how poorly this store was treating its animals. Do NOT support this company in any way due to how they treat their pets. The bunnies had sore hocks on their feet and were kept in fish tanks on a hot summer day. Very poor supervision of animals; there was a cockatoo on the opposite register, pulling off bits of plastic from the counter and eating them. I went up and scolded him a couple times to see if he would stop. He didn't, so I told a walked to the opposite register to inform one of the employees that their bird was eating plastic. Check out: Pretty terrible. There were 3 people working (all around the counter) and only one person was checking out customers. I was the third person in line with a cartfull of items and it wasn't until the person in front of me was mostly checked out that another employee began checking me out. Also I got ID'd when I used my debit card for a purchase that was less than $50. I haven't been asked for an ID for anything I've purchased anywhere before (other than when purchasing tobacco products and renting moving vehicles). Very overpriced and small selection. They only had the smallest package size of the seed balls my cockatoo eats, (which will last him maybe a week each in that size). The rodents and bunnies on the back are suffering. I saved a rabbit who had been there for 2 years and she was living in a filthy cage that was too small to even move. Her nails were almost and inch long too. The workers who take them out of the cages basically abuse them too!!! I saw a girl getting out feeder mice and she picked them up by there tails and dropped them into a box from 5 feet above! And dont even get me started and how dirty this place is. I feed my animals food that does not have by products in it, etc. I used to shop at another place but have found that Pet World does have cheaper prices. The store is nothing fancy by any means. I just recently purchased cat food there to come home and find that the food had expired a month ago. I was so mad! I don't live near this place and try to swing by there if I'm in that area, of course this had to be a day where I specifically made a trip there. UGH! Yes, this place is a bit dingy, clean but dingy. But it carries the dog food I feed my pup (Taste of the Wild) at a competitive price and has a great reward program-buy ten bags, get one free. You still have to pay the tax but it's a great program nonetheless. You have to keep your receipts then turn them in with the provided envelope once you get to ten. I've redeemed a handful of free bags already. The staff is always super friendly. I've never had expired food as some of the other reviews suggest and there is always plenty of stock. I rarely buy anything else when I come in but that's more of me not really needing anything else. Nope, it's no fancy pants pet store but it serves my purposes just fine. read more

I can't speak about the bird department, since I don't keep birds. Reptile room is OK, fairly basic selection usually, and with some exceptions animals tend to look pretty healthy. I doubt that they are all that well taken care of, though -- I've seen a few reptiles that should've been pulled off display and fed properly to regain some weight; I've seen hatchling iguanas being fed thawed frozen broccoli/cauliflower/lima bean mix (too big to swallow, and completely wrong diet anyway). Fish room is big but sketchy. Saltwater fish tanks look as if they're never cleaned, freshwater selection is what you'd expect from a "mart". I've had fairly bad luck with the longevity of the few purchases I've made out of the fish room, and so I've simply stopped buying livestock there. Employees don't seem to be very knowledgable. Store manager is neither diplomatic under stress nor supportive of his staff, from the few bad moments I've seen hm try to deal with. Prices throughout the store on most livestock and supplies are very high compared to other local vendors. read more

I made a mistake shopping here, and I will never return. I bought a larger aviary and went to Pet World Warehouse to purchase some more finches, as they have the best selection in the area (that I am aware of). The health and care of their birds was just appalling. Many were overcrowded and plucking their feathers, the Spice Finches' nails had grown so long that they were unable to perch properly, there was a dead bird in the Zebra finch cage and there was absolutely no food for the remaining Zebra finches, several of the birds had deformed feet, and an employee informed me that the Gouldian finches had been treated for air sac mites several times. Not to mention the cages need a good cleaning. Not only were the animals incredibly poor, the attitude of the employees was terrible as well. Getting assistance was simple, but in the middle of my conversation with an employee another employee came up and interrupted us in order to berate this employee about an unrelated matter. When I approached the check-outs, again the employees were berating each other about how fast the trainee was working, whether I was informed about warranties, etc. Completely unprofessional and off-putting. read more

The fish aquariums were pretty dismal compared to previous visits. Judging by the help wanted signs perhaps they are short staffed. My kids love to feed the koi and the birds and rabbits looked healthy. I have had very good help in the past and know they take time to train new staff. Stopped in today for a pet for my son. Great store friendly staff. He and I decided on a getting a Hermit crab. We found a girl to help us she was not super experienced it seemed like but another employee briefly told her what to do. while my son picked the one he wanted i picked out some supplies and she boxed the crab up. Admittedly I did not look at the crab i left it to my son to choose. we returned home opened the box to a terrible foul smell. The crab was dead and had definitely been that way for a while like a day or two. I never considered there being a possibility of buying a dead pet but that happened today. Cant return it they had me sign something about that. It was just 10 bucks so no big deal but my kid named him on the way home and cried for hours when we opened the box. I will not support this pet store. I visited the bird room today. About 20 to 25 cages. Every single cage had dirty poopy water for the birds. Every single cage. I get it that birds are messy. I have had birds. But this was not a few floaters in the water that were new. The bowls had thick layers of "yuck" in the bottom of the bowls. Not just a days worth. I was there at 1pm on a Sunday. Which means they had only been open a few hours. I told the cashier she may want to mention it to jer manager that the bord water bowls were really dirty. Her respomse should have been "oh ok. Thanks for letting me know. Ill let my manager know". Instead i got an argument about how the bowls are stained not dirty. I told her it wasnt the staining. It was large amounts of food and poo in the water. She just told me my total, took my money, and walked away. Terrible customer service skils. And mlre importantly a crappy attitude about caring for creatures who cant care for themselves in a cage. This is the product they want to sell you. read more

The ferret cages were caked in feces and the poor animals were covered in their own filth because the staff hasn't properly cleaned the cages. The fish room is a joke, they have improper handling methods of fish and aquatic species. The birds are in tiny cages with dozens of birds to a cage. Although I've had good experiences at some other Pet World Warehouse locations, I will not be shopping at this one again, in spite of the fact that it's closest to my home. The staff are unforgivably unprofessional, answering the phone during transactions, brushing off questions, and otherwise not being helpful to customers. I used to buy frozen mice and live crickets for my pet reptiles. Unfortunately, to buy these products you need an employee to get them for you out of the refrigerator or bin. It almost always took over ten minutes for someone to come and help me. The last time I went there, I asked to talk to a manager about the poor customer service. From her condescending smile, I suspected she wasn't taking me seriously. This was confirmed when she tried telling me that my expectations were unreasonable. It seems that unpofessionalism is the rule of this place, so I'm done. It's not you, Pet World, it's me. Just kidding! It's totally you! read more

I have been buying my dog food here for years. Great selection of foods, great service. They will put big bags into cart and take to my car, which is great, as I've had two spinal surgeries and cannot do it myself. Someone thought it was "dingy"? I have never thought that. It's a per store and people are constantly coming in there with dogs. Brightly lit. Plus, they have always had cheaper food prices than Mounds on all food brands. Many of which have a Buy Ten, Get One Free deal. (Mounds own brand is cheaper.) Can't go wrong! read more

I've been a customer for years, I like that I'm greeted at the door as I walk in. One of the few places that at least acknowledges that you are in their store. They always a speedy and pleasant at the registers. I have had just about every type of pet that you could have through the years and I hit up all the pet stores in Madison area. I've found Pet World has the largest selection and generally the best pricing. The Management team is always helpful if I do have a concern and recently have been helped in the Fish Room by a very attentive worker Mike, who is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly and seems to care about his job, rare these days in any retail store. This place is terrible. Prices are high but my biggest complaint is that the selection is terrible. Don't waste your time.

This place may have some lower prices, but you get what you pay for. The employee turn around is horrible as are the majority of the employees. The saltwater fish/coral area has never been properly taken care of and their prices are way to high for the low quality of product. The manager is of no help as the employees are not. If you purchase live food you can purchase the same dollar amount but the amount of product you get always changes. It is almost impossible to get help when needed let alone find an employee and when you do they are just standing around talking. I now refuse to give this business my business. My friend and I went there hoping to get another robo dwarf hamster. They showed me the only one left there. My friend said the hamster's left ear is red. So I asked the staff to show me that ear. First, she didn't hold the hamster gently. When its ear was hidden, she squeezed its neck and head in order to show us its ear. Then the hamster SQUEALED!! I was scared too. But she said it didn't cause pain!!! I have been keeping my old one for almost 2 months and had never heard this kind of cry. In some hamster websites, I'd asked if robo dwarf hamsters make any noise and I couldn't find the information that they squeal. I can imagine how painful that poor hamster was when the staff tried to show its ear. Also, my friend and I found that its eyes are red. But the staff kept telling me it's healthy. We were very disappointed and left. We felt very sorry to that hamster and all the pets that are kept at that store. They simply don't take care of their pets. Even after I told the staff the problem of that hamster, she didn't do anything to it and just put it back. My impression is that the people working there are irresponsible, not caring, and kind of abusive. read more

This place is a joke. My main hobby, aquaria, is something I really enjoy. I heard about petworld from my sister and wanted to check it out. When I got there I went straight to the fish section. I was surprised to see they had saltwater, but than I realized how badly taken care of it was. Sick and dying fish litter all of the tanks, and most of the fish that are in the tanks are incompatible with each other. The place just feels very run down and cheap with its wooden structure. Also, their one tank that actually looks well taken care of has nothing in it for sale. What is this? Now here's the part that really got to me. I know this is store rule, but my friend wasn't allowed to buy a fish because he is 17. He can drive a car, but can't buy a guppy from a dump store like this. Wow. Worst part about it is that he got it all bagged up and everything than when he got to the check out they asked for his id. I guarantee that fish is in better hands with him than in the stores tanks. read more
