Sitting on the floor in the back of the store with my terrified fur baby Shelby. Today from 4-5pm Luv My Pet (an outside company) is offering a 'low cost vaccination clinic'. Only problem is it's nearly 5 and the boys and girls here for their shots are getting restless. Why may you ask is the line not moving? Oh, because Luv My Pet has not yet arrived. Just a few minutes ago the friendly Petco folks came by to break the news. Luv My Pet is running late. The catch... they're 20 minutes later than their estimated late arrival & are not picking up their phone. Around us are disgruntled dogs and cats of all sizes and ages. Though once cute and fairly well behaved are now barking, and restless. Finally, nearly two afters after we'd arrived it is time for Shelby to Cowboy up& get her shots. Bottom line: I've had great experiences here in the past with pet vaccinations but will definitely go to Merwin Animal Clinic next time Shelby's vaccinations are due. read more

Holy expensive, batman! A couple toys and rawhides for Woofie cost me about 40 bucks. The brand name stuff is safe, but their doggie treats aren't top quality. They do carry the bare essentials and cater to many different animals, and I scored a pretty sweet halloween bone. I don't know about all Petco locations but in my area, the prices keep going up, all the time. Example: I've been buying some Rachel Ray dog treats that have been $9.99/bag. Last week went in and they were 10.99. The self serve dog wash was $10 when it opened, 2 months later, it's $12.00. The prices on dry kibble seem very high. These are just a few items I noticed. And, I can actually buy Blue Buffalo canned wet dog food, in 2 of my local grocery stores, for $.30 - $.50 cheaper per can than Petco! I think I'm done with them. read more

i walked in there to get hamster food and stopped to look at the ferrets. they had zero food and were digging for the little bit of food they had left on the bottom of the bedding. going as far as eating the bedding. they're extremely malnourished. they're drinking out of a hamster water bottle which is extremely dangerous for them. i told an employee and he looked at me blankly and just nodding and said okay and didn't do anything. they don't deserve to be living in these conditions. read more

Worst grooming experience ever. My girlfriend dropped our dog off and was treated very rudely by staff member. When she came back to pick up our dog he was locked in a small cage similar to a jail cell. The grooming itself was so bad he looks like someone else's dog, with some areas much too close (around his eyes) and others left long/uncut (his tail, ears and rest of face). The worst part is a random shaved strip on his back and a bald spot on his inner leg. He was not thoroughly washed and does not even smell clean. We've gone to this groomer every 6 weeks for 2 years and our first time late for our 11am, they called us at 11:16 saying they could not accommodate us despite us being down the street and pulling into the parking lot. We begged for some compassion explaining we had a newborn baby and a toddler so the morning was very hectic but we'd be happy to remove extras from our appt - including even the hair cut or deshedding, or take our dog back not fully dry - anything to make up for the time. But they would not help us or show any empathy. The manager had the nerve to tell us if we had called in advance they might have been able to shuffle things around, but we did! They never pick up their phone. He explained that they were swamped that day and wouldn't have kennel space. So I'm wondering how much time in the kennel these dogs spending. In retrospect, I believe they really wanted a way to cancel appts that day - because again we were asking to reduce any number of services for our dog to make up for the time so we wouldn't run past our appt time. And we can't reschedule in the next long time because we're about to go on vacation and then we are going to board & train our doggy and wanted him to be clean/feel good for that (which is another stressful thought in our minds too). It just really felt like being kicked while we were down when they didn't have to and it wouldn't have burdened them at all in the end. I'm now seeing other reviews now with similar stories. I've been shopping here for many years, because it was a decent location for Cambridge. But, I was so depressed after visiting last time because they treat their live animals like shit. I can't ever go back. The parakeets didn't have perches to stand on, so most were standing on the ground (where their poop lands and thus isn't good for their health.) The Betta fish (aka Chinese fighting fish) were stacked in a wire rack, in plastic containers that reminded me of to-go containers for soup. Several were dead. The lighting in the store was eerie and the whole place just feels rundown. If you're looking for cat in dog food, check out Animal Spirit in North Cambridge, or the PetSmart in Fresh Pond. If you're looking for fish, check out Skipton over by Boston Medical Center or PetSmart in Fresh Pond. If you want a small animal (birds, reptiles, small fuzzy guys) check out the MSPCA! They've got lots of little lovely friends who need "forever homes"! Whatever you do, don't keep supporting stores like this that treat animals and fish as nothing more than SKUs, to be discarded when they're dead. read more

I like this Petco. It's pretty far away from my house and I can only go on the weekends when Jeffrey H. Is nice enough to let me steal his car for a couple hours but it's worth the trip. I mean for a pet store. They always have everything I'm looking for. I can stock up on my 30lbs bags of cat food and 20lbs of kitty litter (having 3 cats is no joke). They've never been out of stock and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Having never owned a cat before they helped me out big time on my first visit... letting me know what was a necessity and what could wait until later. I'm also a Petco member of some sort (?) I'm not really sure how it works but I know I get a free bag of food for every 10 I buy or something like that. I like free stuff so that's cool. So why 4 stars and not 5? I think having 20 ferrets in a cage is mean. read more

I am VERY happy with the grooming services I have had here! They treat us great and my dog looks amazing every time we leave

So, we had an emergency and needed to clean the kitty. I called the day of with a special request to please find it in your heart to attend to our puss. I promptly received a call back that sad "come on down". I didn't hesitate and headed right over. There was a misscommunication. The receptionist (clearly not a cat person), scribbled out a crumbled note to the groomer that read: 'dirty kitty' in cartoon murderer handwritting..but who cares we're in! They took care of Beatrice and she was sososososo happy. She likes getting groomed because she's a classy girl. I really recommend this petco- if push comes to shove and you have to go to petco. The manager or head guy is so nice and really loves animals, even 'dirty kitties". read more

For a Petco, this place is very clean and organized. I don't feel like I need to sterilize everything I buy before presenting it to my pet. I would much rather support an independent pet store, but the convenient hours of Petco (10-8 on Sunday!) suit my pattern of procrastination and emergency when it comes to buying food. That said, if you have time, save money and buy online or be a hero and support local. Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A BIRD AT PETCO. Their parakeets look happy, but that's because they are in a cage with a thousand other parakeets (and are thus probably happier with other birds than with people). Anything bigger or smarter will be severely neglected, unsocialized, and probably sick since they are housed out in the open and susceptible to whatever airborne diseases, chemical fumes, or dirty hands come into the store. I wanted to rescue their poor, lonely cockatiel. She was unfriendly, had zero appropriate toys in her cage, and had obviously not been touched by a human in a long time (her head was covered in pin feathers). I go to this PETCO a lot, and it's pretty good for buying pet supplies. They have a huge selection of things to choose from and decent prices given that they have basically a monopoly on the area. I've gotten a bunch of pet supplies here for my betta fish, and I'll keep going back for the stuff they sell. However, and here is a big however, their staff isn't particularly knowledgeable about what they sell. When I got my betta, they told me he'd be fine in a half-gallon tank with no filter, twice a week feedings, and once a month partial water changes. When I got him home, though, he ended up quite sick with fin rot from the high ammonia levels in his water. He almost died! We ended up having to do tons of online research and buy a book from Amazon to find out what the appropriate way to care for him so he wouldn't die. Because Petco's sales associates didn't sell us the proper stuff from the outset, we ended up spending $10 on a tank that needed to be replaced, and another $30 on medicine that ultimately didn't work because his tank was the problem. We then spent another good chunk of money on replacing the bad supplies with correct ones. We would have spent a lot less money if the sales associate in the fish department had directed us to the right aquarium and accessories in the first place. The store is clean and their pets seem relatively healthy, though I have sadly seen dead bettas floating neglected in their little takeout cups. But in general, PETCO is a fine store for someone who knows what they need to buy, and not at all a good store if you're looking for advice on products or pets. They sell the products and pets there is sales demand for, and not necessarily products that are the best for the animal or its owner. read more

The service is really uneven here and in another store in Cambridge. For our two cats, fine-no real problem here except the registers can be SO SLOW. Fish, well, that is another issue. I have ended up buying more things at petsolutions.com than here (except for fish and gravel). The plants are more rotting than I would like and they don't sell the furniture to support the tanks. Also, the fish are a crap shoot. I have had fish die on the way home (3 times) and when I turned around and returned the staff say that this "never happens." Also, they will sell social fish, like CoryCats on their own (as cleaners) which really need to be in groups (try four-a delight to watch, a joy to keep). Your options are few, do lots of homework. I wish I could promote an independent shop but the standards are sad by what I have seen thus far. read more

My review is for the grooming department. I love Sean the groomer he's the best! Always such a pleasure. He takes care of my two poms. I'm very picky when it comes to grooming as it's not easy to maintain Pomeranians with so much hair. My two poms also have anxiety and he is so very patient with them ensuring they are comfortable. When they leave they leave beautifully washed, with a beautiful haircut and calm. Which makes me happy. So five stars for him!!! read more

Best Petco I've ever been to, mostly because of a nutrition expert in the cat food aisle who gladly discussed my kitty's special diet needs with me for at least 10 minutes. (Long story short, keep ribbons/string away from your cat. Seriously. Please. It'll save you both a lot of trauma and money.) I am in this store frequently shopping for my dog Luca or bringing him there for grooming/playtime. Everyone in the store is really nice, welcoming, and helpful. They also have a great selection of anything you need for any kind of pet. I especially have to give thumbs way up to Sean the groomer. He is terrific. I had a really, really, really bad experience with a groomer at another store where my dog was completely shaved without any warning to me because of some minor matting. (My dog is a Bichon and mats often even with frequent brushing and combing...but I digress.) Sean, on the other hand, always is patient, checks what I want, and does his best eliminate any matting. No matter what, my dog always comes out looking great even when he needs a really short cut. I know my dog is in good hands with him! read more

I will never enter another Petco! I was traveling and ran out of dog food (I use Nature's Variety Prairie - a 5 star dog food) that I usually buy at Especially for Pets (Top ratings goes to them). Not only was the store filthy and the staff rude, but they carried only mediocre and poor quality food. When I asked about the food I was looking for I was informed it didn't exist. I encourage all dog owners to check out dogfoodanalysis.com to check food ratings and buy from local businesses. They are usually better informed and have higher quality product. Well... it's not the worst Petco around, that's for sure. I encountered a friendly staff member here... which is why I wanted to review the store. Just browsing hamster-goods and doggie treats (hamsters like to gnaw on milkbones, fyi) I have never really needed assistance from the folks at Petco, but on my most recent visit, the cashier was especially friendly. I think this location is a lot better than the Cambridge store in the following categories 1) Staff, 2) Lighting, 3) Selection, 4) Parking, 5) Vibe. I've never noticed it to be dirty, or dis-organized. I'm not sure if all Petco's do this - a rescue group I was interested in held a meet-and-greet at this location, which was worth the drive from Dorchester. If you're a Petco pals member, you benefit from the deals, but the Internet deals are WAY better. For toys and anything else that can wait a few days, it's worth it to buy online. read more

We called ahead to make an appointment for an 11:00 grooming session for our puppy. We were quoted an accurate, if not overly expensive price and a time frame of 3.5 to 4 hours. When we went to drop her off nobody was in the grooming area until about 11:25. When I called to check around 3:00 I was told she was just drying off from her bath, which made me wonder what she had been doing for the previous four hours, on top of which the woman on the phone said it would be another hour until she was ready. We went back over around 4:15 to check out the situation after doing some grocery shopping in the next door Shaw's, and she was still getting cut. Our pup was finally done around 4:40, more than five hours after the original drop off time. I guess they call it the Doggy Day Spa because it takes all day. I won't really complain about the work - our pup looks good (aside from a few obvious uneven cuts near her eyes) and it was her first time being groomed. The grooming section is so drastically understaffed that they probably shouldn't have even taken appointments. There was one employee working at a huge Petco on a weekend, probably the busiest time of the week. So while she was working with my dog I wonder how many walk ins she had to deal with in the mean time. The rest of the store is alright - good selection, average staff, okay prices, etc - but I think I'll be going elsewhere for her next grooming session. read more

I took my hound/terrior mutt (said with affection) here to be groomed. She is about 27 lbs and does not like the noise of the dryers, but they did a really good job bathing her and drying her -- although the last time I took her they had her out early and not completely dry (she is a big baby, so she probably cried a lot to them). They also did her nails, cutting and painting (much to my 16 year old son's objections) and also did a good job. read more

We have a well established, well planted fish tank and we made the mistake of buying fish from Petco because it was a fish we hadn't been able to find at our usual fish supplier. We checked the fish for Ich or other illnesses and didn't see any. But, just like the one other time we pulled the trigger and bought fish from Petco (many years ago which also ended badly) sure enough, the whole tank has broken out in Ich. I went back to the store to check their tank and sure enough, many of the fish in the tank we bought from also have Ich. We had unfortunate timing in that the fish had just arrived and weren't yet presenting when we bought. After many, many years of buying fish from a supplier whose fish never transport with Ich, we've learned our lesson. Sorry Petco. Your fish (and fish department) are unreliable. I go to Petco because I'm able to get everything I need for my cat in one place: food, litter, shampoos, toys, etc. They also have a program where you can get free food after purchasing 10 bags of the same brand. I also frequently get coupons in the mail. That said, their service is horrendous. I often wait in line for 15 minutes while 1 person is at the register and everyone else in the store is in the manager's office hanging out. read more

When I lived in Brighton I use to go to this location all the time and since I moved I miss this place like crazy. This location as well as the one in Cambridge is one of the few "chain" petstores that I know of in or near Boston. This show is a resonable size for being in the city and offers a great deal of main supplies compared to other pet stores I've been to. This location is relatively clean and organized as well. I have several problems with this location and a few problems with the acutally chain. The emplyees are very friendly at this location but you have to find them if you need help in regards to something, which is fine, but you have to search for them around the store...which can be a pain. I have come to this location several times to find much needed items (treats/food) to be out of stock, which is not okay. I also think that overall Petco needs to come out with new toys instead of the same toys, my dog nearly has all the Petco plush toys that they have and I find myself repurchasing the toys again. Petsmart has different selection of toys, but they're always coming out with new toys. Overall I go to this store if I"m in the area and sometimes make sepcial drives because they have my much needed dog food at this location compard to the other one in Cambridge. But I prefer Petsmart over Petco. read more
