After having my dog shaved without me knowing AND being overcharged for it at another groomer, I was very wary on my search for a good groomer. I had found good reviews about Sean so decided to give it a shot. Upon entering, I was greeted by Sean who was very friendly and professional. He took the time to greet/play with my dog and also talk to me about how I wanted his cut. It was very detailed- from his overall hair length to details on his face. 3 hours later, I was happy to see that my dog looked like what Sean had described! I've been coming here for years, mainly because of it's convenient location to me. I'm only writing now, because there's been a change in staff and the new employees are -- finally! -- helpful and friendly. (I don't use the groomers, so I don't know if that has changed). Many of the earlier reviews are correct for those years, but are outdated, with regarding to unhelpful staff. I would now actually recommend coming here. read more

We live roughly a block from this location, so it garners a few stars right there. The staff is rather hit or miss, with great help on some shifts and vacant help on others. They have food there that we like for the dog. However, it's weird that harnesses and collars are in different sections and not near each other, and there are some harnesses with collars and leashes, but then there is a separate section for others. THey are always out of large dog harnesses and collars, which is a super bummer since our dog is at the small end of the large dog category. It's super cool that they have free socialization classes and a ton of other classes too. read more

My doggie and I are taking classes with Jessica and we love her! She knows lots about animals and since there are two dog owners in the class she can give the dogs (and us) lots of direct attention and support. Jessica even took time to help find toys that my dog liked, such a great thing since I thought she hated toys. read more

This Petco definitely deserves 4 stars. My cat has really long hair and ends up with lots of knots so we have to get him shaved and we have had good experiences here. The first time we came it was the cats first time being shaved so they let us stay and we were able to keep him calm. The 2nd time we were able to drop him off and he came back looking great. The guy who did it was really nice and helpful. He definitely cares a lot about animals and tries to make it relaxing as possible for the animal. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is that the prices are a little high. They have a lot of variety but everything is more expensive than at other stores. However I will definitely go here again to get the cat shaved. read more

Getting your dog groomed shouldn't be the kind of task that can end in an epic failure, but thanks to the person working as a groomer at this Petco location, that's exactly what it turned out to be. I called and made an appointment for my dog at 10am on a Sunday. I was reassured that my dog would be the first pooch of the day and that I could wait about an hour for her to be ready to go. Based on that information I arrived promptly as the doors opened only to find out that the groomer was late. Once she finally arrived she began to take down my dog's info, and told me that it would be at least 2 hours. I asked why it would take so long, but no response was forthcoming. Deciding to give her the benefit of the doubt, I left my precious pooch in her care and told her that I would be just down the street, anxiously awaiting my dog. In retrospect, I should have trusted my instincts and realized that something was wrong. Fast forward an hour and fifteen minutes later, I came by to see how my dog was doing, only to learn that NOTHING had been done yet because she "wanted to let my dog get used to the shop for a while." WHAT?! An hour and fifteen minutes of "get-to-know-you-time"? What a joke. I personally watched the groomer stand around chatting with other employees while my dog just sat in a cage for no good reason. I only tried this place because my previous groomer (who would always have the whole job done in 25 minutes) retired. Unfortunately, I will have to keep looking for a groomer (and quickly since I took my dog away before she was subjected to any further cage time) as this Petco groomer had no concept of customer service, timeliness, or courtesy. Their grooming seems to never be open and they don't post their hours. You always have to call to see if they decide to come in. I've bought fish here just a handful of times and unfortunately I've had disastrous results twice (including last Saturday). Both times have caused a deadly outbreak of ich in my tank. I should have known when the attendant combined fish from two different tanks into the same plastic bag for transport that I was in for a heap of trouble - sure enough, the dreaded white spots showed up today on several tank members. I kick myself for going there in the first place, but none the less, others should be aware that your odds of a transmittable disease increases greatly by going to Petco. They literally cannot keep cricket stocks for longer than a day, if that. Shipments are routinely late, show up light, or just don't show up at all. When they DO arrive, the people who've been waiting on them buy them out again instantly. I've never seen a store struggle more with basic merchandising... For the most part the staff is at least helpful and seems to genuinely care about animals at least, and I'm sure they're not to blame for this store's complete ineptitude of basic inventory management......looking at you middle managers. If you need crickets or any other type of live food for one of your pets....certainly don't depend on this store. read more

I went in here to get some food for my fish. I walked around to see all the animals and it was so horribly sad. There were so many dead fish in the tanks either floating or stuck to the filter... looked like there were there for quite a while. Some of the fish were even eating one of the dead fish. It was disturbing. The other animals seemed as okay as an animal can be in a pet store. The store was also kind of a mess. All in all I left this place feeling pretty sad for the poor guys who are stuck in there :( read more

Jasmine is the best groomer for our two anxious dogs (one elderly and one highly reactive) and we were so happy to get appointments with her within a few days of when the grooming center re-opened from the pandemic. Jasmine is polite, thorough and friendly with the humans, but most importantly, works magic with dogs. I can't recommend her enough. read more

This Petco is about a mile from my apartment so I was a frequent shopper for dog food and cat litter. With that said I would rather shop at upscale boutiques and pay double than that of Petco. I journeyed into the establishment last Friday night after work to pick up a few things, cat litter, cat food, a new sweater for my dog, and a leash all adding up to over 60$! As I approached the cashier there were two people in line ahead of me and a manager jumped on a cash register and said ma'am I will help you out. So I got in her line and gave her my items. Johanna is her name I will never forget it because she gave me the worst customer experience of my life. I wouldn't treat my worst enemy this way. She asked me if I had a Petco card, which I do but its not on my keychain and when I signed up they keyed in my phone number wrong and it never comes up unless I give my last name. This is exactly what I told the manager. She completely ignored me and continued to ring me up. She said, "Well if you don't have your card could I have your phone number." Which I replied it doesn't come up under my number could I give you my name?? Reasonable question. She said HA well whats the name GOD? She was completely aggressive and rude...I told her my name spelled it out for her she HEARD me loud and clear because she found it right away, chuckling the entire time. I said sorry they told me I can change my phone number online but I haven't gotten around to do it....she elbows the cashier next to her and says...Can you believe this girl, idiot ugh and continues to laugh. Completely embarrassed I interrupt her and say, "I am sorry if something went wrong during this transaction I didn't mean to offend you or do something wrong." The woman than replies...oh sorry speak up I cant hear anything you are saying to me I am deaf in one ear. Which completely offended me for having family members with a hearing disability. She continues to laugh and poke fun of me for no reason and I said this is unacceptable customer service. She then says to me,"Once again I cant hear you." Hands me my bag says, "By the way your bag I gave you is ripped." Completely furious I called as soon as I got in my car spoke to the cashier that the Manager was harassing and she explained to me that the Manager had no hearing ailment and gave the phone to another Manager whom I spoke with named Stewart and he advised that I will need to speak to the GM Tara. Which I did. I called back a few days later to report the incident. She listen assured me that this Manager will be spoken to and that she wishes I would come back to the store because the other staff is great! HA I will never return to a Petco as long as I live. read more

If there is one person in line ahead of you and they are buying one item, it will take the cashier about 15 minutes to cash out. The line here never seems to move. My sister and i went to Petco today to pick out a parakeet for our 90 year old Papa. Unfortunately, for us and the birds no one came by to unlock the birdcage. Even though we were told 3 times by the same girl that someone would be over soon with the key. Nope. So, we walked out. I used to shop here a few years ago when my dog, Pappi was still on the Earth. The store has not changed at all. It's still dirty and smelly and the lines still don't go anywhere. I'd recommend shopping elsewhere for pet supplies. This review if for the Puppy Training Class at this Petco. Although I can't say Pumpkin was a stellar student, the class was still fun and a great way to socialize him. You get a useful puppy care book with coupons and the teacher was really nice and patient. He was happy to answer any questions you had about obedience training, or general puppy care...and was overall very involved with Pumpkin. (He brought a variety of treats because Pumpkin was being picky, and he customized lesson plans according to my puppy's level). read more

What myself and ultimately my family experienced Was horrific at BRIGHTON PETCO. The manager herself was terrible. I'm a disabled grandmother and a mother of 2 who's been shopping at Petco for 20 years. One day when I was shopping in the Brighton store I received a tiny cut that began bleeding by a screw sticking out of a snake log on display so I walked over to tell the female manager. I saw a customer beside her and warned the customer to be careful not to hurt herself if she was near the snake logs as I showed her the screw sticking out. I had my cell phone in my hand as I wanted to take a picture of the screw sticking out of the log and the manager demanded I leave the store immediately never asking if I was ok. She was angry that I alerted a customer to be careful and she was angry that I was trying to take a picture of the defective item. I was injured but all it seems the manager wanted was to get rid of me so she could make a sale. That's all she seemed to care about. As I was leaving the store the manager held the log that cut my hand away from my camera so I couldn't prove that I was right regarding this issue. I tried to grab a photo but she yelled for me to leave the store and she was calling the police. I couldn't believe the way she was treating me after being cut. I stood at the register dumbfounded as her fellow workers joined her, in unity for their manager who they are loyal to. Her fellow 'friends'/'workers' saw NOTHING to support her because none of them were in the back/side of the store. It's not right. I was trying to use my camera for that very reason, because I knew they would all support her. Even customers perhaps. All I had to prove my innocence was my camera. But I don't have that now. She succeeded in bullying me out of the store and I have no proof. Now she will have her friends write in response to my review defending her as a victim. But hopefully some will imagine how it felt for me. I'm now banned from the Brighton store. I can never go in there again. I'm disabled it's the only place I can go with no ability to walk far or drive. I did nothing to deserve this. Petco didn't want anyone to know there was a sharp dangerous screw sticking out of a log at a child's level on the shelf. There were many of them. I wanted to protect others and I was chastised and banned from the store for speaking up to help another customer. I was chastised for trying to film it because of her insensitivity. I was dismissed and removed to shut me up about a legitimate injury at the hands of PETCO. I should be able to go back to this store. I have too many ailments as does my 70 year old husband. This store used to be my favorite, there was always a helpful knowledgeable person on duty. And if someone didn't know the answer they found someone who did. They have a couple of remaining good staff members, Dave, Mike, Dissmass (sp?), Brian, Sue, Kelly, Johnna...but other than that forget it. too many new people that are not getting trained, and clearly under new management that is not working. If you're not talking with one of the people i mentioned don't bother wasting your breath...I wish one of the good people would become the manager...really sad how things have changed since they opened :( read more

Terrible grooming experience!! I took my dog, Bandit (a Siberian Husky), to my local Petco on Saturday, September 7th for a furminator treatment, which is supposed to be a comprehensive grooming with a furminator brush that eliminates the majority of shedding for at least several weeks. In fact I've had the similar service from PetSmart and other Petcos multiple times in the past, with excellent results. Around $60+ later, I left with my dog and went back home. Later that day, I noticed that she was still shedding quite a bit, which was unusual for after this kind of treatment, but decided to give it a few days to see if maybe it cleared up. Today (Wednesday, Sept 11th), in frustration, I took a furminator to her myself. The results were insane, there was soooooo much hair coming out of her, almost like she hadn't been groomed at all. Remember this is literally just 4 days later. In previous experiences with PetSmart, I can easily go at least 2 weeks without having to begin to groom her. See the attached image (http://imgur.com/AR4kJp9), this was after literally just 10 minutes of running my furminator over her. If I can get that much fur out of her in 10 minutes after just 4 days after her grooming, there's no way the groomers actually furminated her, or they did an incredibly poor job. Just what the heck did Petco charge me for? This is completely unacceptable. The only reason I'm not giving them a straight up '1' is because the people there were very friendly. read more

They get 2 stars for doing a decent job with the cut and taking my pup in immediately. Can't really give them more than that. For $70 I feel like they should have offered me a glass of wine and a posh lounge to hang out in while it went on. $70! My own cuts don't cost that. And she's a 7 lb Brussels Griffon with no special needs. From now on I'll be taking Stella to Dot Dogs. $40 with tip and they gave her a cute little bandanna at the end. read more

I get a lot of stuff or my pup here, however I used to get his nails cut their and although they are very nice they don't do a very good job. My puppy loves the store though whenever we start our walk over when he realizes where we are going he runs the entire way. They always spoil him with treats and hugs/ kisses. overall I love the store minus their pedicures. read more

I've never felt like we've mistreated our puppy until we mistreated her to grooming here. Never, and I do mean never, will we make this mistake again. We called early on Sunday morning to make an appointment and everything seemed perfect. We made an 11am appointment for same day for our 6 month old Cairn Terrier and felt really lucky (now I realize that we should have taken the availability as a hint). We dropped her off at 11am and were told wash and haircut would take about 3 hours. ...hour 1...hour 2...hour 3...hour 4? Yup, a few minutes shy of 4 hours we called to make sure everything was ok and were told that she would be done in another 30 minutes. Seriously? I don't make spa appointments that last 4 1/2 hours for myself, and my dog is getting one!!! About 20 minutes after, we got a phone call that she was ready for pick up. Then came the shocker - seeing our puppy. The "puppy cut" that we requested resulted in a body shave with a tail left untouched, a face left untouched, and the worst, most crooked zigzag line on her neck of shaved and untouched hair. For your reference, Toto is a Cairn Terrier. What we took home that day looked nothing like Toto - she looked like a rat. Even our puppy kept hiding her face under her front paws on the way home out of embarrassment. Never making this mistake again! Oh, and ps...we had to pay BEFORE we could see our puppy at pick-up time. read more

Jasmine, the groomer, has been absolutely fantastic. We had originally been going to the Cambridge location before it closed, and they loved Rudy and Rudy loved them. When we switched to the Brighton location, he was less than pleased. He seems to get excited when he sees Jasmine now, and he always comes out looking fresh. read more

This is the closest large pet supply store to my new place in Brookline and it is decent. The selection is pretty solid and the store is laid out pretty well. They always also have plenty of parking available which is a plus. The only downside is that they never seem to have more than one cashier in the front and a line can develop on occasion. read more

This is one of the few more clean petco stores that i have been to. It's close to my house and it's right next to a grocery store. What more can I ask for. I also have had a pleasant experience with groomings for my dog at this location. the one thing that annoys me is the amount of telemarketing they do. read more

I don't mind Petco. Its definetly expensive, which is why I've only given them 3 stars instead of 4. I can buy my dog food cheaper at the vet, and the supermarket carries cheaper toys and treats. However, that said - I don't mind Petco because its one of the few places I can bring my beloved pal along with me and the variety at Petco is incomparable to the supermarket. I've found everything I am ever looking for there, and more. The staff at the Allston site are very friendly and helpful (and always there!) And come on, Santa is there this week for pet pictures! Needed to pick up some cat stuff for my fur babies and was in the area. I have a PETCO rewards card on my keychain that has seen better days. The girl at the register was very helpful and told me how to get a new card online with the same number so I don't lose any of my rewards points. Unfortunately when I got home to try and get a new card online it wouldn't work. I don't usually shop at PETCO and my card will work if you put in the account number manually so oh well. read more

The grooming department at this place is literally the worst. They NEVER and I mean NEVER pick up the phone. It's IMPOSSIBLE to schedule online. When you call the general store just to speak with someone they tell you "I don't know what to tell you, the grooming department is it's own department"(ummm Then have someone in there pick up the phone). When you push the topic they give you some half ass answer just to push you off the phone like extremely unprofessional. On top of that when you finally do speak with someone. They tell you to come in at a certain time and that it'll be a little wait. You show up on time and they have you waiting for over two hours just to get your dogs nail clipped. Which is a ridiculous wait for something that simple. Just tell me off bat it'll take a while don't make it sound like it'll be 10-20min and have me wait hours for something like that like I don't have anything important to do. Anyways on top of all that they always manage to not clip a couple of my dogs nail. This is absolutely unacceptable and I will never go into that location again. read more

I had an appointment for my dog to get groomed. However the stylist called out sick. I got notified after my appointment time had already started. When asking to reschedule, they could not tell me a time. There grooming skills may be superior, but this is not good customer service. read more

So upset with the grooming department. This was my puppy's very first haircut and I knew that it would probably be difficult, (which it was) however, I still expected that a true effort would have been made to groom him. I was told that it would take around 3 hours, however after just 1 hour I was called over. My puppy was left with knots dangling off his body, his face was left untouched, his legs were half shaved, and his backside was left with long raggedy hairs trailing off. The groomer told me that whenever she would turn on the razor, my dog would freak out and because of this she couldn't finish him. I didn't understand why she couldn't try using scissors if it was the sound of the razor that was freaking him out. I asked her if she could please try to at least cut off the knots that were dangling off his body (I would have to do it myself at home anyway without any grooming supplies; which I did for one of the knots that I didn't notice she left). Surprise, surprise, he was totally fine when she started using the scissors instead of the razor; the groomer even managed to cut off some of the hair off his face and in-between his eyes. But as soon as my puppy pulled back a bit (because another groomer was talking loudly and it made my dog want to look around) she stopped again. I'm not sure how she could feel comfortable enough cutting the hair from his face but somehow leave the hair on his butt and tail completely long. While I totally understand not grooming for the safety of the animal, it was beyond clear that it wasn't an issue with safety, but rather an issue with patience. I didn't even want her to cut the hair off his face because I truly did believe it would be unsafe, but the knots that were hanging by a just thread of hair were SO easily removable, I'm just shocked that she didn't even attempt to take them off before handing him back to me in the first place. I also don't understand why any of the other groomers couldn't assist her. If the rule is that each groomer takes care of their own client, then fine, however I don't think thats the case because when I walked in, the groomer told me it would just be a minute because she was helping another groomer finish grooming a cat that was there. I am so saddened by what happened today. I won't ever be going back to this Petco for grooming, nor would I recommend others to go here either. read more
