My husband and I came rushing in on a Friday night @ 8:50pm 10 minutes before closing. We needed a better cone for our cat who was recovering from surgery. The young lady was super helpful and took her time showing us the options and didn't make us feel rushed. She even told us of it didn't work for our cat we could return it. After making our selection my husband wanted to get cat food and the young lady who was helping us told us to take our time. I appreciate her patience in helping us. My puppy had recently had TPOL surgery and was miserable it broke my heart. Had a plastic cone on head, could not eat, lay down or much of anything. I stopped may and spoke to Jennifer at Petco, she recommended I try a more comfortable cone more like a neck cushion but went all the way around his neck and attached to his collar. (so there no way it could come off) I called the vet who said she wished she could take them all off pet store shelves. Did not recommend it at all. I felt that Jennifer felt my pain, so I decided to try is regardless. What a difference it made. So nice to have some one take the time to suggest it. I am one who always complains about there it no such thing as customer service anymore but Jennifer proved me and my Vet wrong. So I stopped by to get some Cat food. I am a bird lover so I went over to the section where they have budgies in the glass case for sale. I was admiring them when I saw that the both water bowls they have were filthy. The water was practically black and felt so bad for the poor birds. Please clean their water bowls. This is ridiculous. Helpful staff, but they carry a lot of gourmet treats for your little four-legged woof-woof friends. Chester, my hoodlum pomeranian, he prefers cheap eats rather the fine dining gourmet snacky foods. Chester is from Rialto, the ghetto part of Rialto, so I don't think he can adapt to gourmet treats well since he is an old-man snoop already, sorta like how you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But, if your pooch has exquisite taste in gourmet snacks, they got a variety. Since I'm the subject of dogs, for the dog owners, have you tried smelling your dog's pads on the paws? Okay, I do realize that "pet people" are often not "kid people" and that's okay BUT if you are running a business that depends on customer service (pretty much any business) sometimes you have to pretend you are "kid people" so as to appease their parents and therefore get them to part with their cash. This is NOT the case at Petco, at least the Castro Valley location. After a fun day at the Alameda County Fair where my son "won" two fish (yeah, thanks alot) we headed to Petco to get the basic necessities for our new pets. It was about 6:30 on a warm Sunday evening and I'm sure the employees were hot and tired but there was no "Welcome to Petco!" greeting to be had from any of the three uniformed employees leaning against the desk and when I inquired about the location of the fish stuff, all I got was a curt, "over there in the far corner" with a little finger pointing. En route to the corner my 4 year old spied a guinea pig and squealed with requisite delight -- to which the meanies at the desk responded to with glares (hello, there was maybe one other customer in the store, the only ones bothered by the squeal were the Petco people!) Wanting to get out as cheap as possible (and still not that cheap) I picked up Petco brand aquarium kit, complete with filter and bowl. Then so as to minimize sibling rivalry we went to the tank to pick out a couple more fish so all the kids could have their own pet. I summoned one of the sullen employees and she scooped up a couple of goldfish. When the kids inquired about the live snake she was wearing around her neck, she barely even acknowledged them (Hello, you are wearing a live animal around your neck, if that's not a "talk to me" prop, nothing is!) Now I have a aquarium kit in my cart, live fishies in a baggie and am wrangling my kids toward the counter. I pull out my credit card, already wincing in anticipation of the useless expenditure and the lady behind the counter says, "That's not the right tank for your goldfish, you are supposed to have a gallon per inch of fish, your goldfish are gonna grow and they can live for a hundred years..." My kids' eyes are on sticks at this point, they are frozen in terror, looking at their mom, hoping she'll do the right thing -- I'm stunned. "Uh," I stammer, "I'll be happy if they last a few weeks, I'm just hoping to get out of here without spending too much." Okay, now my kids really need therapy. I'm speechless. Petco Lady looks at me like I'm a total loser and takes my money. Really, Petco lady, did you have to go there? And of course, one of the fish that we bought from Petco was DEAD THREE HOURS LATER -- Floating on top, only to get flushed down the toilet. read more

DO NOT take your pets here for training. My dog caught scabies after his 2nd class. Per my vets instruction, I notified them immediately but instead of taking precautions so no other dog gets the nasty mites, they DENY DENY DENY! Becca the instructor made up 3 different excuses abt how my dog could've caught it. ie, an infected person sat in my car and gave it to my dog. REALLY??! My dog is only 3 pounds. He doesn't even go out for potty because he house trained him with pee pads. Oh and plus their training technique SUCKS. It's treat/reward based so guess what, ur dog will not listen to you without treats! Don't waste your time and hire a REAL TRAINER! This is our go-to stop for dog food, and boy, do we buy dog food! With 3 little chow-hounds we spend a great deal of time here. Pam is always warm and welcoming but I agree with previous reviews that customer service can be hit or miss. The majority of the time we are greeted with a smile and can always find someone to ask where they moved such-and-such AGAIN! I have a terrible time finding merchandise, it never seems to be in the same place twice. I usually just want to make a quick grab and go because if I start looking around too long here I'll spend big bucks on doggie treats we don't need. Big points to the salesperson that asked permission before he gave the dogs a treat. One of our fur babies has a common wheat allergy and this man had the good sense to pick out wheat free treats. I recently adopted a dog that has not been socialized much. My boyfriend & I took him to Petco to get him a harness that fit that he couldn't escape from. Jennifer was our sales associate that helped us and was amazing!!!! Our dog was calm while we tried on a few harnesses but started to freak out when multiple dogs entered the store. Jennifer went above & beyond & helped us go to a quiet place of the store so our dog would feel comfortable. She helped us try on 4 harnesses until we found the one that fit. We found one we liked but this location didn't have the size in stock so she called other locations. Jennifer went above & beyond for us & for our new dog! I would definitely go again & trust Jennifer with any questions I may have. Ask for her! read more

AVOID THIS PETCO AT ALL COST!!! Worst place ever. Rude customer service especially from the manager. His name was Grant and made the PETCO experience the worst. I'd go to another PETCO but may be never even PETCO ever again. All I came to do was return a fish tank bought online and even their website says Easy Return. Printed out the receipt like the website told us and brought it to the store to return. The whole time we were there to return he gave us attitude and I even saw him roll his eyes. What kind of manager does that... If he does that to customer imagine how he treats animals. While we were trying to figure it out since he said he couldn't find any info for the return because of some bogus excuse saying we can return it because the receipt is wrong.. So I'm guessing he is saying the corporate made a big mistake on the website because that's where we got it from. He made it seem like it was our fault he couldn't figure it out. Definitely not manager material. If I was his boss he should be fired.. In the end he couldn't figure it out and I guess he was lazy. So he just guessed how much to refund us... How is that something you should do??? He was able to get us an extra 5 cents then he gave us lip about that.. Like really man.. We can give you 5 cents back stop being such a jerk about it. Alright, i was desperate for goldfish food because I ran out. I bought a can of tetra pellets for my goldfish and it was pretty small but enough to last for a month or 2 I also bought some hamster treats for my dwarf hamsters and Syrian plus i also have a robo. The service this time was a little friendly, and I finally noticed they have a hermit crab kit which I bought for my new pet hermit crabs I also bought a thermometer gage and a palm tree bowl. The stock the 2 brands of dog food that I buy. It's nice that when I run out of both at the same time I can make a 1 stop. The aisles are a bit narrow in relation to the size of the carts and if this place is busy, you'll have a hard time moving around with the cart and dog. I always try and make it during off times. I don't like how every time I buy something they ask me if I want to donate $$ to a shelter. I see the donation sign, if I want to I will, but I feel a bit pressured to donate- I think my 5 shelter/stray animals that rule my house is enough. I came here 3 times and each time I received GREAT customer service. The first time was to buy my large dog a kennel. A guy helped me pick one out for my dog (who doesn't usually like people approaching him). The guy was calm and patient with me and my dog and he made it easy picking the correct size crate. The other 2 times I needed help with dog food. I usually go with my boyfriend, but he was at work and we needed to stock up on dog food. The worker helped put the dog food in my car which was awesome! I always come here now for whatever I need for my dog. Always great customer service and cheaper than petsmart! read more

I'm a PetSmart customer but I didn't feel like driving to San Leandro to pick up a collar and leash. So I found myself turning into their parking lot and taking my energetic puppy up and down the aisles looking for these blasted items. They moved them since the last time I was here. I asked an associate and he touched my puppy, my baby, without asking. Is that OK? Eh... moving on.. I found the leashes! Sheesh! So much to choose from. Ok, time to head to the cashier. Seems like the place was a bit understaffed on a Saturday morning.. or it seems like there is only one employee out of three employees working in the store that can ring you up at the cash register. I expect to be able to go into a store, pick up some pet food, pay and leave. But I waited for 10 minutes before someone with "cashier" privileges was able to help me. A guy had to wander around for several minutes finding his coworker... he even went outside of the store to check? Odd. No doubt, good selection of pet supplies. They haven't ran out of items I needed. A little on the pricey side, but it's convenient to where I live.. so I guess convenience comes with a price. I suggest there be at least some way to signal that you are ready to make a purchase. I don't want to wander around the store trying to find someone to ring me up... read more

Since I have a menagerie of fuzzy things amongst me, I need to have a convenient place to pick up their food and supplies. Thankfully, Petco is right up the street and carries everything for ALL of my babies, legal and not! The convenience factor is why I am rating them a 3.5 stars....otherwise it would be lower because some of the small animal cages are sometimes not really that clean and the lighting they provide for them is really dim, if not obsolete....I am a HUGE animal lover and my babies get better treatment than me most of the time, so fresh and clean environments with good lighting are a MUST! Unfortunately, with this being said, I will still come here because they carry ALL of what I need for my four-legged friends! read more

Great selection and nice service. They have the best selection for grain free food choices for dogs and cats. The staff is knowledgeable and will talk to you about what's best for your animal. We've gotten foods tips, training tips, and tips about toys. I love that they don't sell dogs and cats, but do have rescue organizations on the weekends. Both my animals are rescues and it's the only way to go IMHO. Watch out for sales, cause you will get really good deals then, but the regular pricing can get a little high. I try to stock up and save when I see the sales happen. The parking is awesome and so I'm always in and out like a breeze. read more

Hands down, worst customer service experience I've ever had. I made a point of coming to this petco after looking online and seeing they had fortiflora in stock. My cat has been struggling with staying hydrated, so it was a high priority. We walked in and the employee working, Chris was playing with a collar. After searching all over the store, I showed Chris the product, as well as the web page saying that it was currently in stock at this location. He made no effort to look in store or look it up on the computer. He was extremely dismissive, lazy and disrespectful. He immediately went back to playing with the collar as if we had interrupted him. When I asked if they had any other products for helping cat hydration he again did not look, and just told me they had wet food. At check out he nearly gave us cat food we had not brought up with us, and was again extremely dismissive like we were inconveniencing him by making him do his job. I'm so sorry for any employees with initiative who have to deal with that lazy clown. read more

I've shopped at PetCo, Petsmart and PetClub (my favorite). PetCo is alright, the employees are actually pretty caring as far as I have experienced, so I have no complaints there. I hate to sound like a total cheapskate, but pet supplies can get pretty expensive (especially when combined with near-exorbitant vet bills). Thus, I shop pretty much by price when it comes to pet food and other supplies. Our two dogs are quite finicky when it comes to their food and treats (probably my fault as my husband is quick to remind me), so I tend to vary their fare. The problem with this setup is that prices tend to hit you a bit harder. Overall, the prices at Petco aren't really as competitive as a couple of its local counterparts. It *is* a clean and well-kept store, though and, admittedly, they often have things that some of their competitors don't carry. But I still rate them as O.K. until their prices come down a bit. read more

I was desperate for the frozen bloodworms that my fish eat, so I came here instead of waiting for Connies to get them in stock because they were out. Huge mistake. They looked a little freezer burned or something, but I didn't really sweat it. I should have. The next morning like half of my fish were dead. Store is ran poorly. Their pre boxed crickets are always dead and still for sale on the shelf, dated for weeks ago. Told the GM about it, but no change yet. Also, an employee with pink hair (the receipt said amanda, not sure if that's her name though) takes her time counting out crickets, making sure she counts every single one. Says it will be 8 minutes for her to go get me 50 crickets. Who the hell counts for that many crickets?? Eyeball it the best you can so the customer can be on their way. There poor chinchilla (Sorry I think that is misspelled) looked soooooo sad like it was going to kill it's self. Never seen a sadder looking animal! They also didn't have any fish!!! Fount that to be interesting, no turtles either. They did have hamsters, and rats, and I went oer there to look at them it SMELLED SOO BAD! Yea, that's not to me or the animal!! Gross. Customer service was not great! I had gone when they opened at 9AM and when I walked through the doors, there was immediate eye contact between the cashier and me. Then he looked back down without a "hello". I walked around the store to find what was necessary and then when it came to check out he was having issues with his register. He was not a happy camper whatsoever! Every time it didn't work, he would slam his scanner gun on the holder. He had an irritated look on his face and he hit the counter a few times with his palm.
