Not sure why I never came here sooner. I would typically go up to Petco back in the day (til today) / growing up. I do remember seeing Pet Food Express in this shopping center when I was younger, but never stepped foot inside. I came here to pick up special food for my elder fur baby after her doctor's visit and finding out she had kidney disease. I was impressed by the way the store was as soon as I stepped inside. It did not smell bad, the aisles were clear and clean. Items are all very well merchandised, well-stocked, and appeared to be slightly different merchandise I was maybe not so familiar with seeing in other pet stores like Petsmart or Petco so it would be fun to walk down all the aisles to checkout what they have -- I still have yet to do that as I had gone in for food first then third run I decided to browse a little longer and ended up getting a few things from the toy section for presents and grooming / bathing item once I found out they carried a brand I had bought from Amazon. I get the impression that they carry a nicely curated selection of nicer brands / items for their store which makes it a really fun in-person shopping experience as well. I appreciate the amount of different types of grooming combs / brushes they have specific to hair / size / breed - I was super close to wanting to get this little comb detangler. Another area I thought was smartly thought out was the impulse buys near the register - mini versions of paw and nose balm and other things. I have the bigger version of the brand they carried and its so smart to have mini versions for on-the-go pack in your pup's bag. The staff here has always been very helpful to me and go above and beyond. They are knowledgable in the products they sell and if they don't know first hand, they still go out of their way to help find the answer for you. My partner and I had a very disappointing experience at this location. From the moment we arrived, we felt disrespected. An employee walked out, abruptly said 'EXCUSE ME,' and at first, we thought she was just a random customer. It wasn't until we entered that we realized she worked there. The automatic doors didn't even open for her until they noticed we had our dog with us. When we asked for shampoo, another lady immediately assumed our dog had fleas. We were simply there for a self-service wash, but it turned out we had come to the wrong location. On top of that, she also assumed I had my dog's leash on incorrectly, as if I didn't know how to properly care for our dog. Overall, we felt judged and disrespected by the staff. Pet Food Express is a great place for pet food, toys and other essentials. They have a pretty good selection of cat food in a wide range of types, depending on your cat's needs. They also have a great selection of cat trees. There was one recently that was about 6 feet tall and had two levels of poofiness for the cat's enjoyment! I love that there are always some dogs shopping when I am there and they have a scale to weigh your dog, complete with a treat to give them after! Prices are a little higher than online but that's okay because it's nice to shop and find what I am looking for and the customer service is always awesome. read more

My pittie mix had all sorts of allergic responses and upset stomach when we first got her. Working with Pet Food Express employee Yin, we were able to land on a brand of food that not only my dog loves but agrees with her. We get compliments on her coat, her skin and her smile. Karlton (with a K) is very passionate and knowledgeable about all of the products sold by Pet Food Express. They only sell the best products. I have an English bulldog who has severe food allergies. However, he does really well with logic, sardine diet, salmon, and now Grub formula. That's right?! I have been giving my boys (English Bull Dog, Corgi and Tabby Cat) this Grub Formula. They love it. No signs of food allergies (now going on 6 months). You guys have to give it a try. You pet owners may have noticed that the quality of proteins seems to be on the decline. Even when I've gone in during COVID or before, it's always been a great experience. The only reason I took off a star is that the selection is a bit lacking compared to other places I've been. When I moved back to Castro Valley 2 years ago, I had to change the food I'd been giving my cats for years or find it elsewhere. My frenchie has been having a lot of allergies lately and we were looking to switch up his diet.
