I liked this Petco. Quiet, uncrowded, clean, and super friendly staff. Several people greeted me and offered me assistance and even gave my puppy a little treat (after asking of course). They have a big selection of sweaters, coats, and dog toys as well as some seasonal stuff. They seem to have lots of special events too. PARKING - there is a parking lot, it's off of Illinois street (so turn on the street before the sign, if you go to the Petco sign, you've gone to far. I would give a zero star if there was one. the groomers service is horrible. my appt was at 3pm, they called me and told me, i have tot leave early at 2 so bring him before. on the same day of the appt. the hair cut that my shih tzu got was horrible and his face hair was not cut even read more

The jingle for this Petco should be: "Petco, where the pets go (IN A BASEMENT)" This small Petco is in a basement of a larger building. It has a slightly creepy vibe and the layout is kind of bizarre. It works well enough for picking up emergency food/litter but I wouldn't go out of my way for this one. read more

DO NOT take your dog to the groomers here. I know it may be tempting because of pricing or convenience but you get what you pay for. I scheduled an appointment at the grooming department for Saturday (3/23) online. It was accepted just fine. I received a phone call Thursday (3/21 - 12:15PM) with no voicemail or follow-up. Today (3/22 - 2:26PM) I noticed the missed call, returned it, and was notified by the grooming manager my dog's appointment was cancelled. The manager claims last November she had a conversation explaining to me my dog cannot have weekend appointments because he was matted. Thus my dog gets stressed out. My dog is a goldendoodle and I groom him every single day but it is very possible for them to get a little matted, and I would sympathize but it's all BS. Here is my problem with this: 1. Your manager never had a conversation with me about my dog being stressed out nor was I ever told I can't make weekend appointments. a. Even if I did have said conversation, why would I try to make a weekend appointment if I knew they were going to cancel it anyway? I'm not going to intentionally put my dog in an uncomfortable situation. b. Had I known how stressed my dog was at the November appointment, I wouldn't have tipped 30%. 2. What does my dog being matted have to do with a grooming appointment on Saturday? Just say you're overbooked or lazy. If they don't have the patience or expertise on a weekend they for damn sure won't have it on a weekday either. A weekend can be busy, but that's not my problem if you overbooked yourselves. 3. They tried calling me once. I had to call them to find out my appointment was cancelled. I received no e-mail notifying me my appointment had been cancelled. What if I had shown up at the appointment and been denied? People's dogs are like their children. I'm suggesting if they want to avoid conflict and simply provide better customer service they should make MULTIPLE attempts at contacting the owner and not be scared to leave a voicemail when deciding to cancel an appointment. I created the appointment online yet never received one e-mail about my cancelled appointment. From what I recall when I did bring my dog to the grooming location, it wasn't busy. It was maybe understaffed, but I wouldn't call it busy. I went to the location in November out of CONVENIENCE, not pricing. I had just moved to the area and all the groomers near me are closed on weekends. My dog may take longer, and instead of grooming one dog for 2 hours, they'd rather fit in and groom maybe 4 other dogs in that time frame because it probably works out to more revenue and tips for them. However, that's not fair. I made my appointment fair and square, but again, had I known my dog was overly stressed in their care I would have NEVER attempted to send him there again. If I knew my dog needed extra care and attention they apparently can only service on weekdays, I'd pay more and send him to a specialist. not the equivalent of Great Clips for dogs. This store has no redeeming qualities. Want your dog's pet food or even toys delivered for FREE within two hours? Just go to Amazon Prime, it services the area they're located in and i'm thankful i found that out. read more

I love most of the employees at this store, I go to this one because I can walk there from my place. My dog took several dog training classes and they were pretty good, but I was very unhappy with the grooming services. I have a large dog and it is very difficult to find places to groom him, (that I can walk to). For fifty dollars they bathed him, cleaned his ears and trimmed his nails. His nails were ragged and uneven, his ears were very clean and I could feel that he had had a bath but he didn't smell good like they usually do. The man that was working at the time did not seem happy to be working there. I was also very upset to see where they had "stuffed" my large dog...in a kennel half as big as he needed and he was all hunched over panting and thirsty and hot. If they don't have a place for large dogs then they shouldn't groom them. Very disappointed... read more

DO NOT attempt to have your dog groomed here. Our dog was returned half shaved and mortified. Samantha called and said she was unable to finish and that the dog needed to be picked up. In the ten years we've been having him groomed, not once have we had an issue much less have him returned half shaved! Incredibly unprofessional and frustrating. read more

My Maltese Leland and Bliss were always groomed by Keyla (sp?). She is AWESOME. My little Maltese Leland was diagnosed with terminal cancer on her tongue, and Kaila would always make arrangement to groom Leland when no other dogs were around to minimize stress. Since I vowed never to switch my cat's food, I have to stop in at Petco on my way home from work at least once a month to pick up my cat's food (Science Diet in case you're curious). There is a lot more dog items than cat items - I can see that since I thought cat's were lame for the first 25 years of my life. Anywho, the store is clean, well maintained, items are easily marked, and the staff is very friendly and they always offer assistance every time I come in. And if you ever feel the need to use a hammer one afternoon, there is an Ace Hardware next door. read more

Every time I go in to this store someone greets me nicely and/or offers help. The manager there is the nicest, most professional guy, and as a result those working for him follow suit. Not only this, but it says a lot about Petco as a company too. They do a lot for the animal community in general, and I think must look for true animal lovers to hire. In addition to training classes, great product selection, nice and professional people; Petco does a lot to raise funds for local, regional and national animal welfare organizations in the U.S.. All of this makes me one loyal customer who sings Petco's praises. read more

I love petco. They have everything that I want/need for kitty care. The shop is walking distance from my place and located beneath CVS and next to ACE Hardware. A quick and convenient stop to get the essentials for life. It's not a Petco superstore, so they don't have everything in the world but they have the necessities and the staff is both friendly and knowledgeable. They also have the cutiest purebred bunnies. I saw one that had a mohawk and floppy ears... He almost came home with me. :) read more

I have been coming here for years and am a super jerk for not saying how great all the staff is. Everyone always has a smile. They are also really helpful in recommending various foods and solutions to problems. Most recently I took my master... errrrrr I mean cat in for chipping & shots. We have been traveling more & he suddenly has become a "shoot out the door expert" cool in a hi-rise, not so cool in a house. I was really impressed with the vet staff and was a little sad that they only went around to Petco's and didn't have a brick & mortar location to be my main vet. I've had bad vet experiences & good ones (check my reviews if you are in the NW burbs). Being downtown I've yet to find someone that I love (I do LOVE my pet sitter - she's not on Yelp but everyone in the building loves her). I'm not gonna leave money on the table - it's all about how much you keep. So my lil guy has been driving me nuts on my desk while I am working; so I decided to get him another bed for my desk since he loves his original one so much. I saw that the price online was great but the shipping was expensive because they don't have instore pickup. I stopped at the store and the price was more expensive and they were cool enough to price match with their online store. Hilarious part... the lil monster now sleeps next to the bed on my desk. The River North Petco is AMAZING! I got my puppy, Wrigley, about 6 months ago and was totally overwhelmed, the staff, manager, grooming salon and trainers were outstanding from day one...helping me each and every time I went in. We did three levels of puppy training with Anita and she is the absolute best. She was patient, encouraging, kind and fantastic with every dog and owner in our classes. Wrigley basically pulled me to go to Petco everyday he loved this place so much (we recently moved away). Can't say enough great things about this place!!!! read more

Had Amber help us in the grooming department and she was amazing! She got us set up at the self service area and cut our dogs nails very gently yet correctly. Her energy was really calm and chill and she was so down to help in anyway. Will probably go back and have her do full service just because she seems very trusting with animals. The store is pretty standard. The only down fall would be they don't have many pets to see or buy but that isn't an everyday errand anyway. And they validate parking so that's great too! read more

Great staff, helpful and love that Petco usually has whatever supplies I might need for my pup. I do wish they carried higher quality food and treats though, I find I have to go to other stores/look online for that. It does a good job covering the basics though. I think that the store itself could look nicer (it's sort of in a basement location), but it's also next to a hardware store which is convenient sometimes! If you're lucky you'll catch one of the parking spots outside too. Happy to have this store close to us!! read more

Store without a heart Our little dog Duncan was in his final days and we wanted to take him to the beach but he could not walk so we went to Petco to purchase a dog stroller. They did not have one in stock but showed us one we could order and promised delivery in 3 days. After a week we called and were told the order was delayed. After another week we called and were told the order was cancelled. Duncan left us that week and we never had the opportunity to enjoy his favorite place together. Petco never even apologized for not delivering when they said they would or cancelling the order without notifying us on any of our calls to them. We certainly will never shop at Petco again and we hope this story might convince others not to shop there either. read more

I love the groomer, Rose, at this Petco. I have tried numerous groomers and she is so good with my poodle. I have moved from the area but still go back to Rose. She can get out most mats and cares about my dog. Sometimes I forget cash to give a tip and it doesn't affect the haircut which can at other dog salons. read more

I don't usually take the time to write reviews but this Petco is a real find. Yes it's tiny & in the basement but Anita the dog trainer is AWESOME!!!! I adopted a large American Staffordshire Pitbull Terrier (~80lbs) Theodore. No major behavior problems but very puppyish & will not let a ball go for anything until I met Anita. Needless to say she corrected MY BEHAVIOR and has Theo & I on the road to a great relationship. She also gives a discount for rescue dogs! Getting back to the store the staff are always friendly & very helpful. They do have an outdoor parking lot the entrance is off Illinois, just get your ticket validated before you leave. read more

the staff at this location are incredibly friendly and helpful. it's unfortunate that they don't carry my dog's food (Fromm) or else I would come here for all of my pup's needs. they have a pretty awesome grain free, all natural, US-made treat selection. i often bring my dog into the self-wash which is really nice, however, i bring my own shampoo because i'm not crazy about the one they provide. i also wish they would build shelves and coat hooks in the dog wash room because i never have anywhere to set my things :) read more

Anita is a great dog trainer and lover. She really takes heart in working with all sorts of dogs. Bella is also very sweet and helpful, went out of her way to help me when I first got my pup and didn't know what to do. The rest of the staff is also very helpful and kind. This Petco was like a second home for the first 6 months after I adopted my dog and they were all great. My dog does have a reaction to their grooming supplies, so I cannot take her there anymore, but Geo is also a nice, patient man and excellent groomer. read more

I have never be a fan of big box stores , don't do Walmart or Target, and try to shop local as much as possible. So imagine my surprise when I developed a crush on my local Petco. The store is not pretty, it is in fact, slightly shabby and a lot like being in Filenes basement over on State Street - you know there is a lot of good stuff in there, but don't want to stay long enough to find it. But necessity is the mother of invention. A few months ago I became the proud parent of Cash "Money" Svenson, a Chihuahua mix whose purebred Mother (I suspect) had a run in with the milkman...That being said I wanted to be a responsible parent , so I started taking Cash to puppy play time on Sunday mornings. I have since renamed Puppy Play Time as Teletubbies for grown ups. It is the most relaxing way to waste an hour - almost better than church. I am endlessly amused by the puppies ( and yes since it is River North, Cash is the lone hoodlum in a class full of puppies that mostly cost more than my last car) But the people are nice and Anita does a great job of monitoring puppy AND human behavior. So speaking of Anita... she is also our dog trainer. A master of the Petco philosophy of rewards based training. We are in out third week of puppy class and I am so pleased with the training method that I have strongly recommended it to anyone with a dog. Anita is clearly passionate about her work and communicates clearly and easily the assignments, homework and what one can expect from a puppy. Thus Saturday and Sunday I troop the 5 blocks in snow/ ice and bitter cold, for puppy class and puppy play group and Cash "Money" and I are all the better for it. The employees in general are knowledgeable, helpful and very warm. They also turned me on to the fact that Petco has dramatically expanded their lines of holistic, healthy pet foods, so big box squeamishness aside, I am also buying all my supplies there! So I know this review is long- but if you care like I do about your 4 legged friend, you will want to know this stuff! The ONLY reason I am not giving them 5 stars is because the store is sort of shabby - for reasons the staff certainly cannot control. read more

We went to Petco for our puppy training class. We met with Anita once a week for about 7 or 8 weeks and she was fabulous! Not only did she help us to have our then 3 month old puppy trained with the basic, sit, stay, loose leash walking, come, etc. but she also helped us with the puppy questions we had (how to keep him off the couch, how to keep him away from chewing all our shoes and resources of where to find out our other questions.) She was a great person to have around when we were learning how to train our puppy. We will definitely be going back for the next training class! read more

My dog always looks good but the people who work there are rude and not welcoming and makes me nervous to take my dog there.

The staff at this location is awesome. As a new puppy mom I was really nervous, had a million questions, and didn't know what to buy. The staff here has helped with everything. Anita, their trainer is awesome! She corrals my pup and many others for puppy training, and she manages the puppy play group, which is a blast, but safe and Anita helps all new parents better understand what their pup is up to. I highly recommend her puppy classes, just signed up for the next level! The groomers are pretty awesome too, my pup fell asleep while getting her nails clipped. Didn't seem anxious at all when I picked her up and they did an awesome quick job! The staff here cares, they know the pups and owners repeatedly coming in, and they know what they are doing!!! read more

I come here for most of my cat's needs as it's close to my office. They have a limited small animal/critter section but cover most immediate needs. The staff is incredibly helpful and there's validated parking in the back, for those who drive. All-in-all, this is a great city location. read more

This is a Petco like an other Petco, but you'd expect it to be really small with it being in the basement and so close to downtown. However it is surpisingly large. Not as large as other Petcos but fairly sizeable. It's a good store for all your basic pet stuff needs. I like this location compared to the Lincoln Park (Clybourn) store, just by the fact that it never seems to be crowded. There is a lot to park in for free with validation. If you do bring your pet here, you just need to use the elevator. As you don't want to get those little paws caught in the escalator. Added bonus - there is a Ace Hardware right next door and they'll even let you bring your doggie in there too! read more

Yes they have what I need, but do I really wanna shop in an impersonal, cold and somewhat messy place? white walls, grey shelves and stacked goods makes shopping a dull and dreaded activity.
