This Petco is a chain retail store in the Waterfront shopping center. It sells products for dogs, cats, fishes, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small household pets. Products include foods, collars and leashes, beds, carriers, toys, aquarium tanks, litter boxes, grooming supplies, and much more. I recently shopped at this store to purchase wet foods for my cat. I felt happy that her preferred flavors were in stock and that the prices were typical. However, her dry food cost more here than from Chewy and Amazon. Furthermore, I did not see my cat's preferred toys and furniture, and I thought that the prices for litter were a bit high. I walked around the other sections of the store. My husband commented that a bird cage had many birds in it, but the birds looked healthy otherwise. The cashier immediately and accurately rang up my purchase and thanked me. At home, my cat enjoys eating her wet foods. This store also offers grooming, training, veterinary services, and an adoption center, but I did not use them. read more

I was very dissatisfied with my experience here. The workers denied grooming my dog even after I explained that AVETS confirmed he was 100% recovered from his injury and completely cleared for grooming. They then proceeded to speak negatively about AVETS and question their professionalism, which I found very unprofessional and unnecessary. What gives them the right to refuse service based on their own opinion when a licensed veterinary hospital already cleared him? Because of this, my dog was unable to be groomed and it ruined our Christmas photo plans. Very disappointed and won't be returning. read more

We stopped at Petco at the Waterfront in Homestead, PA, to pick-up pet supplies. While I was shopping, my husband (a U. S. Veteran) came in because he had to use the restroom badly. He kindly asked the cashier to allow him to use their restroom, but she refused. He then explained to her that he really needed to use the restroom. Her response was to tell him that they are not a restaurant and are not required to supply a public bathroom. The bathroom was only for employees. He became agitated and said you are fixing to have a mess on your floor and she still refused. She threatened to call Security on him. Then another employee, (I guess he was the manager) told her to call Security and got into it with my husband. The manager told him he could go to the restroom in the parking lot, if he wanted, but not in their store. They called Security. My husband stood with Security and screamed my name, because he had to go to the restroom. I needed my pet supplies, so I went to checkout quickly. I asked the cashier why they wouldn't be reasonable and open the bathroom for my husband. She raised her voice to me and shouted, " He said he was going to pee on the floor!" I told her I heard that, so why wouldn't they allow him use the restroom? She screamed to the manager, "I'm not dealing with this!" He told me to leave the store and refused my $130.00 sale. Can you believe this? They lost a large sale, simply because they were too ignorant to open their restroom for an elderly man who needed to go. The restrooms they use, used to be open-to-the-public until COVID-19. How very inconsiderate. You should be ashamed of yourselves!!!! All that drama, because a human being needed to use the restroom. Thank God Lowe's knows how to treat their customers. They have a public restroom and decent customer service. I want to shout out to Pet Supplies Plus, in White Oak, PA. I'm am very pleased with my experience at Petco with Dana J. We just love her. When I first scheduled for my puppy Bronny to get a grooming appointment, my friend suggested someone named Yvonne. But she was booked, so we got Dana J. , not knowing. I was so worried because I didn't want anyone to hurt him or anything because he is a very anxious and energetic Labradoddle. He's my baby! When we first met Dana she listened to everything I wanted for Bronny and I explained how anxious and full of energy he was. At the age of 4 months when we started going in November 2022 and I couldn't of ask for a better person for him. Bronny gets the full works done. So I really appreciate her because I know he can be a handful. I called her a few months ago and explained that he was getting neutered and I would want him groomed before getting surgery. She adjusted her schedule to accommodate Bronny and I. I made her a shirt to show my appreciation. It says " Best Fluffin groomer ever " because she is. I had dogs in the past and some groomers will just fit you in when they can and just do what they have too. Dana is a very caring, patient and does an amazing job at what she does. My Bronny loves her. Dana treats Bronny as if that is her fur baby. We are so excited to have a place not that far from our house and a person I can trust with my fur baby! read more

I like this store. I primarily go here for fish and fish supplies, as those are the pets I have. I have also gone here to pick up supplies for my boyfriend's cat. That's the extent of my needs from petco, but every time it's good. Their fish tank area is beautiful. It's recently been remodeled, and it's way less crowded and very aesthetically pleasing. Unlike most pet stores in the area, their fish look relatively healthy in the tanks. It's always a bit worrisome when more than half of the tanks have dead fish just floating in them.. Not something I've seen too much here. Makes me feel a lot more confident in buying fish. They also have a large selection of both fresh and salt water fish. I only get freshwater however. They're pretty quick about getting someone over to the area. It's not super well monitored, so sometimes I have to ask for assistance, but someone is over very quickly after I ask. I love that, because I hate just standing around waiting. There is a small selection of aquarium decorations, but a large selection of different aquariums for all different fish types. I went to this location today hoping for good experience. I was ready to spend $200+ on a crate and various supplies for my new puppy. As I walked around the store with some confusion, I was hoping for a little bit of help and direction from a staff member. Unfortunately, instead of being helped, the best I got was some stares from an employee who felt her sending text messages and giggling at her phone was more important than helping me. I left the store frustrated as it was clear nobody was interested in helping any customers. I will say that the gentleman at the cash register seemed to be friendly with the other customers, but there was no way I was dropping any money here after the female employee ignored me repeatedly. My partner and I went in looking to get a fish; we had difficulty finding staff and when we did, the employee we asked for help said there were no employees at that location knowledgeable about fish. They pulled 2 fish after we chose a tank and all our supplies, and they brought us up to the register to check out. There were 2 other employees at the front desk, who last minute, told us they couldn't sell us the fish with the tank we chose because they weren't compatible, after we were told there were no staff knowledgeable about fish. Our (anxious) Pittsburgh Brown Dog needs a good bath and nail trimming every once in a while and we take her to Petco at the Waterfront and have been very, very satisfied every time. I know she whines the entire time and they let us know she is NOT cooperative when it comes to the nail trim, but the staff is so friendly and so patient and let us know their recommendations in the nicest way possible. It's convenient, it's close, it's Petco. I frequent a lot just because I can take little man in if I want. Careful taking your pet inside, or you might have the experience I had where a gentleman was walking and didn't notice my pup and kicked him. Prices are moderate, depending on what you are looking for. Be sure to have or get the card there, even if you don't plan on shopping often. Without it you won't get the deals, and like I said, prices are moderate. Selection is good, wide variety. My pup and cat don't seem to mind when I go a little wild in there and come home with just about everything I didn't need. read more

I shop at this Petco mainly for convenience while shopping the Waterfront. I have always had pleasant conversations with the employees. I would like a little more space in the aisles because it's hard to maneuver my stroller around. Their prices are average, not the best but like I said this is convenient when I'm shopping waterfront and need cat food. This store is absolutely horrible when it comes to fish. I established my tank with their white and black mollies. The tank was great for 4-5 months. I then added more fish into the aquarium. The next thing I knew I was waking up to dead fish almost everyday! Petco did credit the price of new fish when I went in there and advised them of what happened. However, within a week I lost about 12 fish, some of which were brand new. One new, sick fish managed to wipe out my entire aquarium. I haven't bought another fish from them. Also, their employees seem to just talk in circles because they don't know the answer to your question. 2 stars because my dogs love their toys. UPDATE: I was asked to send a link of this Yelp and my phone number to an email address by a commenter, so I did. A day later I received a phone call from the store manager. She asked me 'what issue I had' when doing business with their store. She had no idea why she was contacting me, other than because I sent an email, and offered no solution. I will never go back for their nail clipping service!! I went in last night with my dog to get his nails clipped, only to find out that I would have to help hold him in the entrance way so they could clip his nails, instead of in the back where they could contain him, because a dog had been skunked that day and the odor remained. My dog gets very scared and proceeded to pee in the entrance way every time we tried to cut his nails, which then got all over him and me. And that wasn't even the worst of it, she only cut his front paws because the back did not need done, and then proceeded to charge us the whole amount. Never again! :) read more

I brought Sophie in to get some more supplies. What puppy couldn't need more toys? Then the ambush occurred. A lady that works as a vendor for one of the dog foods decided to make me her project for the day. I told her that I wasn't interested since I use foods that are very low in fat -- Boston Terriers are notorious for getting fat when they are older and many dogs tend to have issues with fattier foods. She still went forward -- why? Her dog food was 15% fat whereas the one I used was 8%. Show me one that is lower, I might think about changing; now please leave me alone. The store itself was larger than others in the area, not as large as others I have seen, and I was able to find the items that I was looking for. The associates were nice and Sophie had a good time meeting new people and seeing dogs 20 times her size (she only weighs 5lbs right now). I was happy with the store. I was happy with the associates. I DID NOT like the lady that stalked me as I went through the store. Petco, please talk to your in-store vendors and let them know that it is NOT okay to continually stalk your customers. We like going to Petco because we can take our big dog in the store. He loves to go in and smell everything!! He gets to pick out a treat. He enjoys seeing the other dogs. We enjoy seeing our dog so happy. We also like to check out the dogs up for adoption. We have 2 but you never know when another one will steal your heart. Petco carries foods and treats and all kinds of pet supplies that places like Walmart and Target don't. Our boys love to check out the fish, snakes, and lizards. Today was our first time to use their grooming salon. We took out big dog Diesel in for a bath and to get his nails clipped. Diesel has been having really dry skin and nothing we have tried has helped. We left him at the salon and they said they would call is when he was done-about an hour. It was actually 45 minutes and when we went in to pick him up he was a very happy dog with very soft fur. They had given him a conditioning treatment. I love my dog, and therefore I find myself visiting Petco more often than the average person. She is quite particular in terms of her food and treats :) Petco seems to always have a good selection of the better brand dog foods. With all of that negative press from awhile ago with re-calls etc, I feel like they have always stayed on the up and up of what is safer and healthier. Fortunately I have a low-maintenance dog, grooming-wise: she's short haired, doesn't shed much, and rarely gets into anything smelly. Unfortunately, I think she's claustrophobic. She spends bath times trying to escape and pedicure sessions running away, so finding a groomer is essential. Throw in the fact that she's a pitbull and people are afraid of the breed, and it gets even harder. The Petco groomers were pretty good. They were able to squeeze her in with about 24 hours' notice. At first I thought the groomer seemed a little stand-offish but when Rosa popped her head over the counter, she immediately warmed up. There was a different groomer to ring us up and she said that Rosa was friendly and full of kisses, so obviously the groomers were nice and she felt comfortable, which makes me feel comfortable if/when I bring her back. It cost $32 for a full service bath, which "includes a 15-minute brush out, bath, blow dry, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, anal glands checked, ribbon and fragrance". They have a lot of other add-on services, like a de-skunking bath and teeth brushing. It you have a Petco Pals card, you get the 9th grooming session free. The only cons were that it took a while (about an hour and a half - a weekday appointment might be faster) and the entrance to the grooming section is right next to the cages of adoptable cats - this seems like a sure way to ensure traumatized cats. There is a separate door that we used to exit, so definitely use that if your dog will try to go after the cats. As far as the store itself, it's huge. Petco is like the Walmart of pet stores - everything you could ever need is here. They also sell fish, reptiles, and little mammals (ferrets, mice, Guinea pigs). I would prefer to go to a locally owned groomer and pet store, but I was surprised and pleased with Petco's grooming. read more

1 fish died randomly 1 day (less than 24 hrs) after i bought it and my new betta has velvet. Never. Again.

They used to have a pretty reliable and knowledgeable staff. The new manager(s) seem to have changed all of that. The trainer they used to have apparently didn't follow Petco protocol as closely as the corporate offices would like; so he left. Their next trainer suffered the same consequences of being told that she would have to follow all of their rules to the letter. Basically their training classes consist of "sit, stay and loose leash walking"... however since every dog is not the same, I don't see how it's feasible to train every dog the same way. I was a pretty regular customer, for over 3 years, I knew all of the employees pretty well. Around the end of 2016, something must have happened because all but 1 or 2 of the employees who knew what they were talking about (I'm pretty knowledgeable myself with dog, cat, food, training, toys etc and even small animals and fish, I worked for a pet store myself for a few years and know how to research things) had all left. And I mean left in the matter of about a week! Stopped going in as much around that point. Went back a few weeks ago and there wasn't a single employee I recognized. And no one came up to greet me or ask if I needed anything, which I know the company is big on as I'd personally heard their female GM scold former employees over this. Example: one of those regular employees was helping me in cat food, which is near the back of the store, not the front doors. She came back in a huff and told her the district manager was coming down on HER because their scores were low (not sure what the "scores were low" meant...) Hello, the girl was with a customer; whether you recognize me as a regular or not, I'm a paying customer. I used to stroll through the reptile section and heard one of their other managers, a shorter male, giving the complete opposite of correct advice for the setup of a new bearded dragon. Bottom line is it's a big box pet store. Don't expect individualized treatment because they simply can't provide that with the turnover rate they clearly have. Also, they won't readily provide you with this info, but they CAN AND WILL price match their online prices. Most of which are much lower than the store prices. read more

I'd like to give an update that things have not changed since my last review. I decided that I would buy a few fish and give them a second chance since I was there getting some supplies. I should note that I go here often due to it being close to my house and convenient when you have several animals to care for. I was appalled when the employee getting my platy fish out of the store tank scooped up a dead fish but then literally took the fish into her hand an threw it back in the tank (literally threw it) I honestly was so in shock that I didn't even have words to say... I ended up buying my fish because she took them up to the front. Petco please revise this behavior I won't be buying fish here again, I should not have bought them that day but I wasn't going to leave them to stay in these dirty tanks, I've been in a few times after that experience and I've noticed that they are always having dead fish floating in the tank and fish that they can't sell because they have a disease. I've worked at a pet store before, I know that fish will pass away but where I worked we were told to remove them from the tank not throw them in to continue to rot and have other fish eat on them and catch whatever disease the dead one had. I should also note every fish I've bought here has died with in a month or two after purchase. I have fish from other stores that last WAY longer. The care for these poor animals is very bad. But the store manager understood the issue with the product design and let me return the old one for credit then buy a new and hopefully improved model. i don't have pet, but I always find myself in pet stores. its therapeutic in a way, lol. I walked in and was amused for 5 minutes over a hamster who ran on a wheel like he was running for his life. it was so funny haha. I checked out their fish and other pets. Afterwards I made my way to the cat adoption area. The kitties seemed well cared for. The person working/cleaning the room was very nice. She mentioned how she has 8 cats, all rescues. I just wanted to write you to express my extreme disappointment in the Waterfront location. My granddaughter and I bought two mollies last night around 8-8:30pm last night. One of them died over night. When I took the dead fish back to the store to exchange it they gave me a hard time. Saying I needed a water sample. I told them I've bought many fish from them in the past and never had to bring in a water sample to exchange a fish. (I own two fish tanks. One 55 gallon and one 40 gallon). I wasn't asking for my money back, I just wanted another fish. They refuse and the "manager" walked away from me saying "that's our policy." I got my money back for the fish, but they no longer have a customer. I also own a business in Homestead and would never treat my customers that way. Especially if I wanted to keep a good reputation. They have lost a customer who has spent hundreds of dollars at that location over a $4 fish. Here is the fish return policy they have listed online. No where does it say you need a water sample. "Petco's commitment to our customers: All freshwater fish purchased at petco.com are guaranteed to stay alive for 30 days from the day they arrive at your home or we will gladly refund your money. All marine species, live rock and plants are guaranteed for 15 days from delivery." I will now have to drive 10 miles out of my way to another pet store, but they will NEVER see another dime from me. Hope that $4 fish that they probably paid 25 cents for was worth it! read more

I am very disappointed and angry about my recent experience at the Waterfront Petco. I took my dog to be groomed and the Petco grooming employee told me there was no way he could cut my dog's hair and he had to shave it down to the skin. Because I have a small dog and it is still cold outside, I was not okay with this choice. The groomer continued to tell me that other groomers must pull and torture my dog in order for her to be nicely groomed. He implied that the other Petco groomers cause pain to my dog, which he called a "stress groomer." At one point, the groomer reached over to pretend to pull my hair as an example for how it is to groom my dog. It goes without saying that I left the appointment and did not allow Petco to groom my dog. This groomer was rude to me as the pet owner, implied that he and other groomers would cause pain in order to groom my dog, and that showed that he did not have grooming skills to work with my dog's hair type. Rather than properly grooming my dog, he would rather shave off all of her hair so it was easier for him. When I called to speak to the manager about this incident, I was told that she would speak to the groomer. There was no apology, sympathy, or incentive to come back. Though I have been a returning customer to Petco for the past two years, I will no longer return. I have already set up an appointment for another groomer in the area and will never return to Petco, either for grooming or for purchasing anything in the store. read more

I've been in a few times to pick things up for my kitten. The prices are decent and the staff is really knowledgeable. The location is great whether you are arriving by foot, bus, or car. Another review complained about the in-store venders, but I found them to be crazy useful--while I'm looking for low-grain healthy food and biodegradable litter, I'm not married to any one brand and the kitten isn't picky at all either. The venders ALWAYS have coupons. While it's not a great idea to frequently change a cat's food, these coupons are good for a year and some of them work on treats/supplements. I also love the weekend vaccination clinic. The vaccinations are listed as "low-cost." The prices for the actual vaccinations are the basically the same as every vet in the city, BUT you don't have to pay for the office visit so that saves about $50. Score. Especially great if you have a tiny kitten that still needs boosters and has already seen the vet. The only downside is that a huge dog jumped on my cat's carrier and tried to squish kitten. Luckily, kitten was more interested in smelling and licking said dog than in being afraid...but beware that some of these other owners are not properly containing their pets. read more

Yvonne did a great job grooming my dog Brody. His hair was matted really tight on his back. I was hoping not to have to get him saved and Yvonne said she would do her best to avoid this. Our dog Callahan has been to four different Petcos since we rescued him about a year ago. This is BY FAR the best grooming experience we've ever had. We previously went to a petco in Monroeville and they said they would not be able to groom him because he was too anxious. They only spent about 5 minutes with him to determine this, and then went on to put a note in his file that he was 'unable to be groomed'. So I decided to try one more time with Waterfront Petco and lo and behold, it was a success! Callahan is a dog wild mild anxiety, but very sweet. They took their time and at some points had multiple people just petting him and talking to him to make him feel comfortable. And best of all, they groomed him beautifully!! We will always go back to this Petco for his future groomings and I highly recommend this to everyone else who may have an anxious / high strung dog. My experience at the waterfront petco was extremely disappointing. I have a 9 month old puppy who was scheduled for his first grooming.When we got to the Waterfront Petco for our scheduled appointment, the woman working was extremely rude right away, saying I shouldn't have scheduled his first haircut on a Saturday, something I was never told on the phone. I offered to reschedule for their convenience but she said no... only to continue being rude regarding his excited nervous behavior (he is a puppy!) I often brush him as his fur gets easily matted, so my daughter and I do what we can to groom him ourselves. For whatever reason, this woman began saying she has to shave his entire body. Her reasons were that it was too busy and she didn't see him able to behave because Saturdays are so busy and he would be too excited. Basically, she did not want to take the time to groom him! I told her I would not want her to shave his entire body. I don't see any reason for that, and again, I offered to reschedule and left. I didn't believe he needed to be shaved entirely but am not a dog-grooming expert so I stopped by another pet-place to get a second opinion. I walked in, my daughter and the puppy in the car, and told the woman at Paws (in Munhall) that Petco has said my 9 month old puppy needs to be shaved entirely. She said that is a possibility and to bring him in so she could see if it were in fact true. My daughter and the puppy walked in and she scooped him on the table, inspecting him. She said exactly what I thought, he does NOT need to be shaved entirely! She said of course he is excited, he is a baby. She was great and seemed like she ACTUALLY LIKE DOGS! She said that his leg fur and beard are fine and don't need to be shaved! She was so accommodating and seemed so capable, NOT like the Petco woman who acted annoyed and didn't want to take the time! Do NOT go to Petco! i took my 8month old yorkie puppy to get trimmed up this weekend at monroeville location. when i picked him up the groomer christina knorr stated "oh by the way your dog is gray now" she completey shaved my puppy's entire coat off all his black and brown fur is gone and will not grow back. my puppy even has bald patches and cuts! i asked why did she shave his fur off and she stated 'it will break off anyway' that would not have happened until he was over 1 years old she took it in her own hands and butchered my dog. he is now ruined! managers only wanted to reimburse the $30 instead of my whole $77 dollar bill, after i was advised they would. i called the district manager yellana kharchezka who stated she would only give me a gift card like i would ever go back there. they completely ruined my 8month old puppy his puppy coat is gone and will never come back. christina knorr is the worst groomer and she was rude from beginning to end, she needs to be fired! i will never return to any petco let alone monroeville. your not even worth the one start that they make me give you! read more
