When paying someone to take a grimy, just-released-from-the-pet-hospital pair of poodles to freshen and yet be gentle and caring, ask for Tatsuma in this location's grooming salon. Not only was he gentle and caring, he actually heard what I wanted as the clip and they were PERFECT! I've had friendly and courteous service at this location and the store is always clean, smells fresh and is well stocked. Good reasons to return, but honestly, I can find the same in other stores, but this is the ONLY place that I'll trust my pups with for grooming. Now that I've seen Tatsuma's work, I'll be asking for him every time. And incidentally, I will never, ever set foot in four of the other listed groomers' locations (they were all highly rated). I wanted to return a collar that I purchased in Mission Valley without a receipt and Christine was rude and dismissive. She should not be a front of house manager she should work in the back office away from people because she has no soft skills needed for engaging with customers. She made a big show of barking hello at customers as they entered the store and apologizing for the wait because she was having to deal with me. She made me feel like less than zero. She was correct that a receipt was required but she refused to look it up with my pals card even though I purchased the day before. I called the other store and they looked it up and she was so angry you could see the veins in her forehead as she was forced to take the information and give me the refund her jaw was clenched she was pissed. What a horrible manager... I would hate to work there and I bet the employees do. The guy from the other store said "yeah...I don't know what the problem is with that store they just refuse to look up receipts. Why don't you come to my store and I will take care of it." I went there 2 weeks ago to buy 2 baby rats. When I got home I figured they were sneezing a lot ! I thought it was nothing and that it would go away. But yesterday, one of them actually died from it... So I got really worried and went to the vet. I went back to Petco to check on the rats they have, I hold 3 of them in my hands, from 2 different cages and ALL 3 of them were sneezing !!! WTF??? And then one of the staff member was telling me how they usually take care of them in the back... I don't think they do anything for them ! Poor animals ! In addition, the 2 times I went there, I had to go to the cashier to ask for someone to help me, there is absolutely NOBODY in the aisles to check if you need anything. Horrible Took my two dogs for grooming. I can believe what a horrible job. Asked for bath and face trim. It looks like a neighborhood child did it. Uneven chop. I've had nothing but professional service here. The layout of any of all the Pet Cos I have gone too have been very user friendly and fun to shop around in. There is always plenty of parking located at this one where all the other's I've been too state wide had little, no or even pay for parking. Let's start out with the positives - they clipped my dogs' toenails on the spot (w/out an appt) and charge only $10, which I don't think can be beat. However - here come the negatives - the groomers at Petco (and maybe just THIS particular location) were horrible, cold and heartless. I will never, ever take my dogs back there again! When we got there, there was another gal behind the front counter working on a poodle mix. The dog was obviously scared to death - shivering and shaking, with this low whimper that I still have yet to forget. The gal working on the dog just kept forging in - NEVER saying a kind or comforting word to the dog (like "it's OK"..."you're OK," etc.) or petting it to sooth its nerves - nothing! In fact, she was just looking away the entire time as if she was a robot - just doing her job - and never even seemed like she heard the dog or, even worse for a supposed pet-lover, CARED! I was apprehensive about them doing my dogs, but figured it was only a nail-clipping and I was NOT going to be leaving them unattended. I was wrong - my husband and I sat there for 15 minutes while she (the other girl who checks us in) manhandled my whimpering/shaking chihuahuas during the entire nail cutting process. They both shook and cried, and she cut both of their nails too low (more than once) and they let out a huge cry. Her response was "oh, stop it...you're fine." Both of my little dogs are scared when it comes to getting their nails cut, so I figured they would shake and be nervous, but what I didn't expect, was the groomers to be cold, heartless and so uncaring. She, too, never comforted my dogs with a single word, nor did she pet them or try to soothe them. We sat there speechless for 15 minutes, while they coldheartedly worked on my dogs and the other poodle-mix. It's like they are so immune to the reservations and fears dogs have being there, they don't even notice or care. I was so sad when it was over, I couldn't say or do anything but leave. When we left the doors, I looked to my husband and said "we are never coming back here again" and without reservation, he replied "I agree...never." We said nothing to each other that entire time waiting for our dogs, but we each saw how they handled them and never thought twice about returning - so it's not just me (being an overly-sensitive and protective dog-mother!). . I've been taking my 14 yr old Cocker Spaniel to Petco for years and have had some wonderful groomers but unfortunately both of her groomers relocated and I had to use another one. This groomer behaved unprofessional because he didn't want to groom my dog the reason being my dog has ear problems and heart problems so we can't clear her smelly ears as often as we like because we try to keep her calm but we do clean them. We took her in every 4-6wks for baths and he only groom her 1-2 times and he alway acted like it was the worst ever. Then recently he just refused to groom her because he said she was biting at him but in reality he never wanted to groom her in the first place. And to make matters worst he put in the computer she could never be serviced there because of her heart condition and I feel he is discriminating because she is old and has a ear condition and the ears smell bad. Her other grooms understood and they knew my dog and me and that we do take care of her. Also the last groomer would tell me how they would make fun and talk about my dogs ears because they smelled. How rude the new groomer gets one star. Very disappointed after all grooming dogs isn't always going to be peachy. read more

Took my dog in for a full groom. This was his bath, nail trim, hair cut and I also added a nail grind for an extra $5. Normally I go to lemon grove which they were booked up for today so I opted to take him to La Mesa. What a disappointment!!! April greeted us upon coming in and told us it would be anywhere from 2-4 hours. Taking him to lemon grove for the same thing I expected a little over 2 hours but NOT THIS TIME AT LA MESA!!! At the 4 hour mark we were in the store looking around and then we got the phone call for pick up. HORRIBLE!!! My dogs hair cut was so uneven and it was really sad to see him like that. We told April we wanted him cut to the shorted they could and he was literally bald in some places with other places having long hair!!! FOR REAL APRIL???!!! You shouldn't be working on dogs PERIOD!!! 4 hours for my dog to look the way he did was unacceptable. And then to make it right you want to try to fix it??? How??? Make him bald all around because you can't grown his hair back in the places you left bald!!! FOR THOSE OF YOU THINKING ABOUT TAKING YOUR PET HERE DO NOT HAVE APRIL DO IT!!! This Petco has got to have the most knowledgeable employees I've yet to find at one of the chains. I brought in my pug puppy the other day to return some things we had previously purchased and ended up not needing and wanted to size down the kennel initially picked out. Ashley led us around and gave us the skinny on what it was we'd be needing to pick up, pros and cons of each item, etc. Everyone was extremely friendly to myself and my little puppy and showered her with treats. It helps knowing that they've had lots of experience with animals to help me get through the initial confusion and scariness of being a puppy's mama. Food selection is really great as well. I love their policy that if your dog does not like the food you can bring it back in and return it. I discovered that the small breed dog food I had gotten was meant for adult dogs and was not the puppy chow I thought I had picked out. Returned it without any hassles and didn't get stuck with a giant bag of dog food for the next 9 months until she's bigger. Much appreciated. read more

I am not a big online person or Yelper, but I have to put this post out there. Unfortunately, I use PetSmart for my three dogs food, but I only use this specific Petco for my dog Kirby's nail trimming. Trina is the best!!! Usually Kirby is very cooperative and we're in and out of grooming in five minutes or so, and usually have Trina as our groomer. Today, Kirby was being a complete beast (all day, not just when we got to Petco). Trina was at work today, but a girl I hadn't ever seen there before was the one that took Kirby back and started tryyying to grind Kirby's claws down. He was being awful. He's not aggressive. Just wouldn't sit still for five seconds. Trina noticed that the other girl was struggling to even get Kirby to sit still, much less get a single claw done, and came out to assist. Together, they finally got all paws done. I apologized for him being a jerk today and we went on our way. I never really look at the job they've done, because I know they always do a great job. This evening, I actually thought to look, assuming they cut some corners to get Kirby the heck outta their place ASAP. Nope! All claws are short and smooth as usual. Thank you for loving your job and taking pride and having patience when my boy was having an off day. Hopefully his oooonly off day to come!!! read more

I just had my pet groomed at their facility. I say stay the hell away! When I walked in I saw a man with blond hair lilterally pressing down on a mall dogs back and yelling at him to knock it off. That alone should have given me a major warning sign. Since there were other groomers there I thought maybe the dog had been bad or somethiing. I took my 10 month old puppy in that had had a car accident and a broken hip 6 months prior. I told them to be very careful with her and to shave her. The shaving that they did was rediculously horrible, different lines all over her, different size shavings. Then they informed me that she didn't behave and slid off the table, knowing that she had had a broken hip is a puppy weighing 60 pounds, her first grooming whey in the hell would you even chance putting her up on the table! What the hell kind of professionals are those. I paid 67 dollrs for a botched job and the probablitliy that my animal was hurt while there. They are lucky I don't sue their asses! read more

Went in to day to have my dogs groomed and the people there couldn't/wouldn't understand that even though the Dog License Renewal Form said that the Rabies Expiration was 8/30/2016 that down where the vet signed the certification it was written that the current vaccine expired now on 8/9/2019. I have no idea why this place is getting so many bad reviews. I can't speak on behalf of the grooming facility, but the store itself, and it's staff are great. I had questions on dog food, I've been very paranoid every since my 10 year old lab mix got bloat and miraculously survived. I have three other dogs that could still get bloat because their stomachs aren't tacked yet so I wanted to ask about what foods would be best. The manager was the only person working, the other two employees were on lunch break, and the manager said he'd see if he could get someone for me because he was checking people out, and the man left his lunch break and pleasantly helped me for a long time rather than making me feel rushed or like an inconvenience. They always have what I need, and let me tell you, I always need a lot of things when I come to Petco! Needless to say I'm really surprised to see the ratings and reviews some people have given them. read more

I had the most upsetting interaction with the people of dog grooming salon. My dog hasn't been brushed obviously, he had stains of dried food on his mustaches and his ears look curly and unbrushed. When I went back to let them about my complain instead of apologies and correction. I was unattended, dismissed and treated badly. One of the attendant Frankie insolently raised his voice to me and order me to go and brush my dog to my home and accused me of causing trouble everytime I go there. The weird thing is that I have not visit the salon in four years and in the past I have never had a problem with anyone.
