I'm giving this Petco location 2 stars solely because of the woman I spoke with on the phone prior to our appointment. I called ahead to ask whether Vetco Vaccination Clinic would honor services we had already purchased at a Vetco Total Care Hospital so we wouldn't be double-charged. Thankfully, they did honor it. The woman on the phone was incredibly patient, kind, and helpful - she is truly the only reason this location is getting any stars at all. Unfortunately, the actual appointment was a very different experience. My husband took our dog in, and he said the visit was unpleasant from start to finish. The nurse who administered our dog's vaccinations was rough and came across as aggressive and unkind. She slowly crept up on our dog, which felt intimidating rather than calming. After that, she made comments like "what's wrong with you," "chill," "relax," and "tantrum" when our dog was understandably uncomfortable. I may not be a professional, but creeping up on a dog doesn't seem like the best approach. She also attempted to weigh our dog and seemed confused, telling him to get on the scale even though she hadn't placed him fully on it in the first place. Overall, her demeanor felt mean and impatient, and it didn't seem like she enjoyed her job - or even liked dogs. At the end of the visit, my husband handed our dog's vaccination passport to another employee so the vaccination stickers could be added. That employee wasn't sure what to do with it or where the stickers should go. The nurse then snatched the passport out of his hands and added the stickers herself, which came off as rude and unprofessional. All in all, this was not a positive experience, and I would not recommend this Vetco location. We will not be returning for future services. Good luck to anyone who chooses to go here. read more

I went in there today to purchase a parakeet for one of my cages. Which I have multiple vages and birds.I even managed a pet shop 35 years back. I was talking with a female employee there named Ettie. Who usually works in thier aquatics area. I mentioned that I was thinking of letting my cockatiels who were used to parakeets already around a new one that I wanted to purchase. No one was going to be in danger. She then refused to sell the bird to me after mentioning this. Another snot-nosed kid working at petco. Well I have spent alot of money there over the years. Long time Petco Vital Care customer with 2 different dogs. Current one is 10-12 lbs poodle mix, and has been professionally groomed regularly since baby. So she is an excellent client. Horrible experience at Lakewood/Tacoma Petco's. Recently had scheduled morning grooming appointment and was on time. Was informed that there were dogs ahead of us and our dog was going to have to wait 5+hrs in crate. Unless we wanted to pay "expedite" fee. Then maybe only three hrs. We were "on time" for our appointment. Why would we need to pay extra? Before getting any work done. Mentioned it was wrong. Left store and went to Tacoma Petco and Vital care services were performed. Unbeknownst to us...the Lakewood stylist "referred out" and the next time we went to Tacoma which is out of our way. They declined the service (Vital Care that I pay monthly for) after we were there. Because of note on our account placed by the mean, vindictive Lakewood store stylist. Saying we could no longer use the nationwide monthly service we had been paying for, for years. Back to a meeting at Lakewood with manager. Went well. He agreed to a way we could restore account. And apologized for inconvenience. We told him we didn't want to go back to Lakewood. With mean, stylist. But had never had problem in any other store when traveling. After 2 weeks went back to Tacoma store and was quite rudely declined service again. For the Lakewood stylist trying to cause us problems. Now the Tacoma store was acting like we or pet had done something wrong. But hadn't. Went back to discuss with Lakewood manager and he's again agreed to remedy account. And contact Tacoma manager to remedy. Offered a free future service at Lakewood for our inconvenience. As the high conflict stylist who had caused so many problems, no longer worked there. Two weeks later. Made morning appointment at Lakewood. Showed up on time and was informed that they had no stylists. But didn't call us or text to cancel. Manager was out of town. So frustrating. And time consuming. Went to a different Petco store and had great service. They were courteous and professional. Said they would love to see our pet again. What a refreshing difference. Obviously we suggest taking your pets anyplace other than at Lakewood or Tacoma Petco. At least until they can reinstate, and teach managers and employees, what the term "customer service" means. read more

Do not go here! Staffing has tremendously change and the service and level of pet knowledge isn't consistent. They guess what would be a good product. For the groomers! Do not take your pets there. Very unsatisfactory service. I've taken my dogs there in the past and just recently turn my dog away because he growled at the person who was trying to receive him. My concern is.... What did you do to him last visit? On another note, I've asked what type of dental, shampoo and cleaning products they use. Doing some research by visiting other grooming /pet shops, this place makes you spend high price on generic items they use for grooming your pets.. I would spend an extra 20 dollars for better service and products that would make my animal family happy. If I could put a 0 star I would Trinidi should not be in customer service . I purchased fish from there 2 days ago, everything went great from my initial perspective. I bought 2 Albino Plecos & 5 Guppies. When I got home I noticed one of my plecos was acting odd (wouldn't move much kept burying into the substrate) the next morning when I woke up it was dead. So I drove to the Lakewood PetCo (which I'll never go to again) only to be told when I got there that I can't return my dead fish (I had the fish in a bag with the receipt on me) because I don't have a water sample for them to test. I thought ok never heard that before but I want a refund so I will do it. So I drove 15 minutes home, 15 minutes back to petCo have them test my water. A worker tell me it's fine, only to try and then have me buy "beneficial bacteria". I declined because to me it felt like a money grab. Why would I need to buy something if my water test came back fine. I got my refund & I left. I woke up the next day to find 2 more dead fish. Instead of going to PetCo first I went to AQUARIUM PARADISE. They tested my water & told me everything was great. They also stated had I put beneficial bacteria in my tank like the lady at PetCo had recommended it would have killed everything in my tank & actually set my tank backwards resetting my tanks cycle. So now that I knew my water was fine I drive over to PetCo knowing they would want to test my water (their made up store policy). I have the fish in a ziplock & my receipt (any other store this is all that is required, even on PetCo's website) I also had the water sample on me. Here's where they lost a customer & hopefully more so no one else has to go through what I had to. I walk up to Trinidi & I tell her my issue I purchased 7 fish here the other day. One died & I already got a refund on 1 the night prior. Can I get a refund on the 2 other ones that have now died. She then stated as I assumed she would that she could not do that without a water sample. To that I said I have a water sample but you guys just did a test the night prior and gave me a refund on a fish in that same tank I don't see why you'd have to do another water test. She said it's just their store policy and I can't get a refund until I go to the aquatic section and have them test my water. So then I pulled up PetCo's Website, and went to to their return policies on fish. I tried showing her but she didn't care to look and said she thought maybe the water testing policy was on the back of the receipt... the customer service was horrible. I told her no it's not on the back of the receipt tried to let her look at it. Tried to show her my phone with their companies policies. She didn't care she just continued on with trying to force me out of line and to go get my water tested. So I asked for a manager, this made Trinidis face light up red. She told me no! How are you going to to tell a paying customer no. So again I stated I want a manager finally a manager comes. The manager I couldn't get her name, came up and I stated that I didn't feel the need for them to test my water as I just got it tested at aquarium paradise & I told them I wasn't trying to be rude but I trust aquarium paradise more than I trust PetCo employees. My water was fine also again nowhere on their companies website do I see that I need my water tested. She again said it's just this stores policy. But to give me my refund, I guess I was causing to much trouble at this point. Rather than try to help the customer they just tried to defend Dans stupid policy. It's made up. Don't buy fish there, if they die trying to get a refund is a made up process the manager created himself. You guys work at a CHAIN COMPANY you don't get to made & inforce made up rules. Save yourself time & money & go to aquarium paradise if your local. Or even go to petsmart they at least don't question fish returns they just say ok & get the refund going. Save your dog the anxiety and poor experience, visit another location. This Petco Grooming location is the definition of poor customer service and skills. I dropped my Schnoodle off at 10:30, in standard grow out condition, no matted hair, requested they use an #5 on her body and teddy bear cut on her face, ears, and tail, as a previous salon last did, and was quoted 2-3 hours, which is very standard. I received a call at 1:30, which I expected to hear my dog was finished and ready to be picked up. Much to my surprise, I was instead informed the groomer had left and my dog's service was not complete. She had been there for THREE HOURS to only be pre-cut and bathed. When I arrived to pick her up she was still wet, her fur is uneven, and her tail is completely bald. After seeing their pre-cut work it's probably best that her services couldn't be completed. Who knows how shaven she would have otherwise been. I can understand an emergency. What I don't understand is why my dog was there for 3 hours only to be kept in a kennel and minimally serviced. Had the groomer not left in the middle of the day when would my dog have been done? At the 5 hour mark? The amount of dogs that were in kennels in the back yelping when I arrived to pick up my wet dog was overwhelming. After speaking with the store manager, Tori, it's clear that this location is poorly managed, and they should be ashamed of how they treat those dogs. If you can't attend to the amount of dogs you are booking, reduce the amount of appointments you allow to be booked. It's a simple solution. read more

This location supports the Oakbrook Cat Rescue by hosting adoption events where rescued cats and kittens are brought in from their foster homes to meet potential adopters. They also sometimes have adoptable cats in their kitty condos at the front of the store. The staff really cares about the animals and are very knowledgeable about the products they carry. February 14th 2020 Spoke with Steve and Alesha A puffer fish was damn near dead, struggling and getting picked on. Kept puffing up and swimming upside down, spinning and running into the filter, tank walls and decor inside tank. There were 3 other kids looking at fish not including my son and I. I asked to speak with someone and they said it's sick and came that way so I asked why they still had it for sale even in the "sick tank". When I kept pushing they covered the light to the tank for "less stress" but then the puffer fish totally freaked and started sinking up aside down, still the manager didn't bat an eye. When I asked another person who said they were manager as well, he said he was "confused" about my complaint. I will NEVER step foot in that store location again, the carelessness of the staff and the apparent negligent of fish are ridiculous. It's never a good experience for a child to watch a fish struggle and look as bad as this one did. I had an awful experience, I went to the Petco in Lakewood to purchase a ferret for my daughter. I asked a sales associate if I could see a certain ferret and she said "Yes, but you cannot hold it, it's our policy but I'll let you see how he interacts with me so you can see his playful traits." I said "I can't hold the ferret until after I pay for it, which is over $400.00 (tax)? "She chuckled and said "Yes." I then asked "Can I at least pet him? As she is aggressively petting and holding a ferret.I unShe then proceeded to chuckle again and said "I'm so sorry but they are like humans, they can catch the most common cold while she was stroking him and then proceeded to chuckle again." I've held ferrets at Petco before, I own ferrets but she then stated that it's always been their policy. I then proceeded to tell her that was untrue because I held one in December and she looked at me and again with a chuckle and said "I'm sorry." I then asked her "So we cannot pet or touch an animal that we want to buy until we pay for $400.00+? That's ridiculous. She then looked at me and chuckled again "Sorry." Worst grooming place I've ever taken my dog! I hope nobody takes their pet for grooming services here! They left my dog so scared, the man who was cutting his hair, I could tell was super rough with my dog cause he would be scared to be grabbed after he left. And his whole demeanor changed. He used to be so playful and now he just keeps his tail under his butt. When I went to pick him up, his nails weren't trimmed and I went back in to get my money back because everything was just bad. This is for grooming. I have a 9 year old labradoodle that I have always taken to small local owned groomers...who have always been great, but on the expensive side and sometimes hard to get an appointment. Mainly because they don't have a big staff and can't always answer the phone. The convenience of being able to book online with Petco was a HUGE plus. I had no issues getting an appointment with lots of options available and being open Sundays. Josh did a fabulous job with my boy. The price was right and using the app every 8th appointment is free! I love this place. I must go here weekly to get my bearded dragon crickets. With discount membership you get 1 cent off each crickets all year round. There pets seem very well taken care of. The bearded dragons do seem very small not matter when you go in there and the crickets in there tanks are large size which I find odd since even they suggest small size crickets for baby dragons. Over all I enjoy this place because everytime I go there somebody has a unique or adorable pet with them. read more

Refuse to sell me a fish! I went there yesterday to pick up a fish for my daughters birthday. I went to the fish area and asked for two gold fish and the worker told me the tank I have was to small for the gold fish. I was told a Betta fish would be the only fish that will work with the size tank we got. After my daughter chose a fish we went to pay and the worker at the front asked me the tank size I have. I told her and she said we can't sell you this fish unless you have a 3gal fish tank. I inform her that the other employee told me a Betta fish will work for the size tank I already have. She went on to say we have the right to refuse to sell the fish. I just put the fish down and walked out and took my business other place. But this location (I just moved to Lakewood area recently) is always different. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. You will never get the same answer. They took a PetSmart coupon again for me a few weeks or so ago, but tonight they said they would not... and that they price match items only. Just a heads up .... I've been to this Petco many, many times, and it seems like more recently it has gone way down hill. A few days ago I went in and let me tell you as I walked in the door my nose was greeted with a FOUL smell of animal feces. I was going to pick up some things for my pet rats, as I was looking around near the critter section I noticed the smell was almost unbearable. I looked and each and every SINGLE Critter's cage/Tank were just in terrible conditions. I was literally in shock! The cages haven't been cleaned in weeks the rats and guinea pigs were literally sitting in a stew of their own shit and piss. It broke my heart because I expect waaaay better out of petco! Anyone who owns animals knows that un-ventilated cages (glass) are not recommended or suitable as it is for small mammals because it can trap bacteria and horrible smells bad for respiratory. I can only imagine how they felt, the rats looked miserable as they had to lay in their pissy/poopy cages. The birds they had in the back of the store looks un happy aswell, one of the cages had tons of flies and moths inside it's cage. I took photos !!! I left the store and called the store manager telling him how disappointed I was in the conditions of the animals. All he said was it was the best they could do. Which made me very, very angry. This is UNACCEPTABLE! I don't think I will be going to this petco ever again! Unless they really clean up their act. read more

My girlfriend and I went into the store with our 5.5 month old golden-doodle. We were minding out own business when out of nowhere another customer's dog came up behind us and as we turned attacked my puppy. This was unprovoked. He would not release for what seemed like forever. After she was released an employee (Steve) did come check on us because of the commotion and screaming. He was very kind but when asked about off leash dogs in the store and whether they needed to be on a leash, he ignored it. I repeated my question asking "Shouldn't customers have their dogs on a leash???" He quietly and shyly said "well there is a sign on the door.." And that was the end of that conversation. We left the store and saw the woman with her dog standing in line and her dog STILL NOT LEASHED!!! We waited for her to have a conversation as she walked out her dog was STILL NOT LEASED and yet I spotted one in her hand??? The conversation was not productive so we left. Animal control said it happened at petco so it is a civil suit and I called to file a grievance and still have not received a return phone call. I called two more times and one of their employees said my first grievance was not officially filed and I was not given a reference number but this time I was. So I am PATIENTLY waiting for a callback to get this policy enforced. I work in the ER and if this were a child that child could have been killed. I will not step foot in that petco and will continue to cal their customer service until I get someone to respond. Fortunately my puppy was not physically harmed but she is scared of bigger dogs now because of an irresponsible owner who did not leash her dog. If your dog is aggressive put a muzzle on the animal or at least A LEASH!!! It is the LAW! read more

The associates are really friendly and they were so helpful! I get the petco brand food "Merrick," because my dog is allergic to a lot of ingredients in other foods. I get the limited ingredient one. This is what I came in for, but since I had recently moved to Tacoma I didn't know my way around the store. When I entered the store they immediately asked if I needed help finding anything and I asked for the Merrick dog food and they brought me over the the section for it. I had brought my dog with me too because I like getting her out of the house and exposed to as many new things as possible even though she's 14 years old. They thought she was really cute and gave her some love which always makes me happy. It's a great store, good prices, and it has what I need for my dog :) read more

I enjoy coming here, sometimes to just browse the selections for something new for my two boys. The staff has always been super friendly, more so that it feels like they have a sixth sense when it comes to finding customers who need help. Recently, however, I decided to try the groomers for my husband's westie since he really needed a good grooming and there weren't any pet groomers I could book same day (yesterday). Luckily for me, they were able to squeeze him in and I have to say, the gal did a FANTASTIC job!! Not only did she make Willy look handsomely like a westie with a nice flowing skirt below and trimmed down the back, but also gave him the look that my husband wanted, which was a Mohawk for his head.. I will definitely return to her at Petco to groom my husband's dog in about two months from now :) Kudos!! Btw, the groomers are very friendly and talkative, they even gave me some advice on the dog trainers at Petco, but that's at another time. read more

I bought a small beta fish tank from this store. I went to go return it a few days later because I was not satisfied. They stated they could not issue me a refund because I didn't bring in the same debit card that the receipt stated I used. I proceeded to tell them I only have one debit card and showed them my BANK STATEMENT that showed I purchased from Petco for the same amount the receipt stated. Was able to have the full refund but "only this one time because the receipt doesn't put random debit card numbers." Was insanely rude when I tried to show my bank statement to PROVE I have only one card and that the transaction went through on that ONE card I have. read more
