I've been coming to this location for about 5 years now but yesterday I had an experience they made me want to leave a review. I went in to buy my dog a special training harness that goes around the snout but when I was checking out, Ashley have me some very useful information and gave her true opinion about the product. She ended up recommending a different type of training collar to avoid injury. I am so thankful and I absolutely love the harness recommended. My dog no longer pulls me. Thank you Ashley! The dog grooming is terrible! I brought my Yorkie in for a "face and fanny" trim and they cut her in multiple places on her stomach where they clipped too close, they were only supposed to trim face and fanny also so I have no idea why they clipped her stomach. Also, she was having trouble walking an sitting afterward because they shaved her too close on the fanny. I had to have her seen by my vet tech because she looked so uncomfortable. New to this pet thing. So I have four boys and it is a struggle going shopping with them EVERYTIME, thank God for the friendly and helpful service at Petco! Being a first time dog owner, I am not familiar with what food to get, such as quality... Someone sees me in distressed, trying to calm down and distracted my kids as I am reading these bags of dog food. The woman, assuming it was the manager, didn't catch her name, came to my rescue. First time coming here to get my doggy groom. Drop Bebe off around 5pm and picked her up at 8pm. Took a little longer than I expected but the groomers did and amazing job! Also super happy that they honored a sign that said "25% off for new customers for bath and grooming" after I had paid! So I decided to grab my pup a small jacket with the money I saved. So glad they were able to schedule me a same day appt. I had called everywhere and no one took walk-ins or were all booked. We go to this Petco probably 2-4 times a week for pet supplies as we are reptile and small animals enthusiasts. We love the staff-NORMALLY. Sam is our favorite and regularly takes care of us and our pets. She is a star employee. Whoever the woman is that is your reptile animal manager, I think Christie, a blonde white woman on the short side hair up, was the rudest person I have encountered in a very long time LET ALONE at a store I frequent. Her attitude in regard to adopting an animal that is currently in the back due to not eating that we were suggested BY THE STAFF to adopt and were asked to come back when this mgr was in. Wow. Total shock to get basically spat at and then she turned her back to us. A 1-2 word answer is pretty wack, an eye roll is even more wack, but scoffing and turning your back to me loses my business and guarantees I'll be shopping at the El Cajon location. It was nice to pick someone's brain about a house rabbit and even though my questions were completely ignorant, she helped me choose a product and brainstorm my new house set up. I have been bringing my dog to a groomer in this salon that has done an amazing job. Her name is Angel. If you are lucky enough to get her in the Chula Vista salon, you will be beyond amazed!! Unfortunately she left Lemon Grove and we got Katie. The good news, she finished must faster than Angel. The bad news, she finished must faster than Angel!! A proper grooming should last more than 10 days!! Oh, btw, it should also be even. Um, did I mention that the eyes should also be clear of "stuff". The staff is really helpful and very knowledgeable. Yelp says that that is not saying enough so they made this a tip instead of a post. But what else can you say about a place. If they are helpful that probably means they also care and there's a reason for doing what they do. And knowledgeable, well, knowledge is power, everybody knows that. They have given me great information when I needed help with buying supplies for my dogs, turtles, or fish. First off go find another groomer! I wish I didn't have to put a star this deserves ZERO stars!!!!! We recently rescued our dog off the streets and made an APPOINTMENT for Saturday June 17, 2017, to get her groomed and fix her up. When we arrived to our appointment we were checking in and I did mention my dog was in heat (mind you she's 10lbs) the lady at the front desk said she didn't think they would take her and she went to ask the groomers and the "supervisor" who then said she would not do it and it would be an inconvenience to them because they were to busy. Meanwhile we had an APPOINTMENT and spoke to someone via chat online who told me they would do it! The "SUPERVISOR" would not come out to talk to us but just had the girl that was helping us at the front desk tell us they wouldn't do it. I was watching their conversation and read their lips and facial reactions of ALL the grooms saying they didn't want to do it!!!! DONT GO HERE THEY ARE ALL RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. At the very least the supervisor could of spoken with us and expressed their policy and concern for them not being able to do the work, instead she hid behind the glass and had the other girl do the dirty work! Whenever you feel the urge to indulge your fur-children,this is one of my first stops. I am quite selective about pet food, and Petco offers as many varieties as any place I've been. But add to that medicines, accessories, vitamins, treats, grooming tools, toys and bedding and you've scratched the surface. They do grooming and education, and have frequent adoption clinics. The clerks are all very knowledgable and friendly and will go out of their way to make sure you and your pet are happy. My only issue is some of the treats are junk, they're not good for the animal. read more

I'm not very impressed with this location. I've been going to petco for a long time, my old store, San Carlos, was closed down some time ago so I visit other petcos and have been to many of them. This store is more modern than some, being newer. It is also small, and had quite a lot of animals for the petcos I've been to. Not many of them looked in good health, and some of the tanks were so small for the animal. I'm a hobbyist aquarist, and I very much enjoy testing the pet stores I go to on their fish. Typically, I'll ask about goldfish or betta fish because those two have a lot of misinformation surrounding them. I asked the guy who was cleaning the fish tanks about getting a goldfish and what I might need. He recommended a 1 gallon "tank" and said they didn't really need anything except food because they don't do much. That isn't even what the company recommends for that fish! I don't understand how you can work in a store and not know their basic recommendations for animals. It's even petcos policy that a goldfish should be in no less than 15 gallons I think it was, and almost every other store asks about the tank size I want and they tell me they recommend at least 15 gallons. It might just be a goldfish but I hope this employee at least has read up on their other animals, but I wouldn't trust that. read more

I have an online account with Petco and on occasion also purchase things in person. I Purchased a harness for a new rescue dog and unfortunately it didn't fit. I attempted to return it the next day and they wouldn't take it back as a result of the COVID 19. I was really upset with this decision. No doubt they were concern about the health of their staff, although I took great health risks as well just shopping at Petco and attempting to give them my business. If they had concerns of COVID 19, they could of taken the return and just let it sit for several day. Any potential virus would have died after several days of just sitting there. I left and made my purchase at a local pet store and will not return to Petco out of principal. I will come back at a later date to just make the return. My spouse and I are dinks (double income no kids). We spend a lot of money on our pets. My PALs reward account will prove it. I would recommend going to Kahoots or a local pet store as I did. The staff at Kahoots were kind, very helpful, and would have taken my return/exchange. This "no return" policy just reinforces the need to shop elsewhere or buy online, of which does not support the local brick n mortar store - makes no sense and really doesn't protect their staff any more than collecting cash or touching the same item I brought to the register for purchase. Lackluster customer service is only the beginning. The store is constantly understaffed, the products over priced, and the groomers are incompetent. I brought my dog in to be washed and trimmed. I was told it would be 3 hours, they took 5. The one thing i told them not to do was shave him. So when i pick up my dog what do i get? A fully shaved dog. He has a tripple coat, shaving is very bad for dogs with triple coats. Now he lacks his protective coats and is constantly cold. Do not trust your pets to these people! read more

Very bad customer service. I called the grooming department at this location and asked about bringing my dog in just to have her nails trimmed. I was told that this was a walk-in service and I could bring her in that same day. I told the grooming associate that I would be there shortly. Once I arrived at the location, the same person I had earlier spoke with, advised me that they need copies of my dog's shot records in order to perform any grooming services. WHAT AN IDIOT!!!! Why did she not tell me this over the phone! Shot records are not exactly something people just carry around with them all of the time. And i would not have had any problem bringing the records in, but I was not going to drive all the way back home to get them and then go back to Petco. What a waste of my time! I instead took my dog to a REAL grooming salon and will NOT return to Petco. read more

I came into this store today. When I walked in no customer was at the counter, I was able to walk directly up to the clerk. I walked up to him directly and showed a picture of the dog food I was looking for, ( I had never been to this store). He stated back wall dog food. I am only here as my son is in the hospital and I am getting the dog food to help take care of his dog, which, is a service dog and has not left his side the whole week. The dog food was not on the back wall. I was up and down..the isles... I finally went back to the counter and there was a young lady at the counter, i asked her I cannot find this brand of dog food. She could tell I was a bit shaken...I somewhat explained that what had transpired with the previous "clerk" . She immediately showed me where the brand of dog food was, Whole Hearted Grain free Beef and Pea recipe. All life stages... Was not on the back wall. I shared this experience with my son, which he does shop at this store, he was able to tell me immediately where it was located. When I learned that the previous "clerk" was the Mgr. I was abit taken back to say the least. Especially when my son informed me that is their "private" brand of dog food. When I told the Mgr. of my disatisfaction, he "stated, he was busy at the time. I repeated, no one was at the counter, I walked right up and asked my question. (he was not on a phone call, was not in a conversation, just at the register). The worst service I have ever encountered. Came in at about 8:20 PM with my wife and daughter to look for some fish for a tank we recently setup. Found a few fishes we wanted to purchase. Went up the the register to ask if we can get assistance the reply I got was that the fish department was closed. Closed? The store is open I didn't know Petco shuts down the fish department before the store closed... maybe the grooming department but the fish department? And this was from the store manager Blaine. I asked if this was a common practice with Petco or just his store his reply all Petco. So we leave feeling upset because something tells me Petco does not do that so we called a different Petco and asked if their fish department was closed answer was nope the fish department is open as long as the store is!. I talked to one women on the phone about dog training and she was very helpful, she then put me on the phone with the actual dog trainer and she was very rude. I took my pup here for training classes recently and am so happy with the outcome. Emily was our trainer and she was so great! She is very patient, friendly, and informative. You can really see that she cares about the dogs she is working with. I was really shocked at how quickly my dog picked up on all of the tricks and commands taught! Thanks emily! read more

The other night, my bf, our dog and I went to the Vetco clinic held at Petco. Tension was high because of an untrained husky that ended up nipping me, my dog and a pit bull. The staff handled the situation calmly and very well. I could tell that the other customers, their children and animals all had decreased levels of anxiety and fear after the man with the husky left. I would like to thank JIOVANNA, MANNY, AND DARLING ESTHER for being so accommodating and calm in a VERY tense situation. I must suggest that for those who don't train their dogs, there should be a different area, away from other customers and pets, to wait to see the doctor. Esther even held my boyfriends place in line so that he could see how I was doing after the dog bit my leg. (no blood drawn, just struck a nerve and is now bruised). She said she was willing to do the same for the huskies owner, but he refused, falsely claiming that he had the dog under control. We have shopped here since we first got our pets, and will continue to do so. 10 stars for exquisite service. read more
